This is where I could write some long introduction explaining why I’m just posting a list of things today, but the fact of the matter is I can’t possibly string all these things into a few concise, well-written paragraphs. Bullet points and/or numbers are in order.
1. Y’all. I totally messed up on the “My Very Excellent Mother Served Us Nine Pizzas” thing yesterday because I wrote ORDERED instead of SERVED. Maybe some of you thought I did it on purpose to be funny.
I didn’t.
This doesn’t bode well for Caroline’s eventual assignment on the Solar System and also serves as a very good example of why I never need to homeschool. The world doesn’t need another child running around declaring, “THE EARTH IS TOTALLY FLAT, Y’ALL”.
2. Speaking of Caroline and the fact I have nothing left to offer her education-wise, the other day I was telling Mimi and Bops about something and Caroline asked, “Where is it located?”
I replied, “It’s in a place called Chicago”.
She said, “I’M IN THIRD GRADE. Don’t tell me ‘IT’S IN A PLACE CALLED CHICAGO’. I KNOW ABOUT CHICAGO.”
I’m pretty sure she’s packing up and moving to New York next week.
3. I want SO MUCH to discuss this whole A&M to the SEC mess and Baylor’s threats of a lawsuit. But I’ve always been told if you can’t say something nice then you shouldn’t say anything at all.
Sometimes if you love something you have to let it go, Baylor.
Edited to add – I was a little harsher earlier and I apologize. I have very strong feelings but I will keep them to myself. I love many, many people who happened to have graduated from Baylor.
4. I ended up with side swept bangs yesterday. It felt like the right choice. I’m not sure how I feel about them yet. I’ll let you know after I style them myself.
5. I’m so excited about the debut of the new Missoni collection at Target that I even marked September 13th on my calendar so I wouldn’t forget. I hope it’s worth me driving five miles out of my way and enduring four additional stoplights to get there.
Of course I’m debating going to my secret Target instead because I think my main Target is totally over-shopped. Rumor has it we’re getting a Super Target in our neighborhood, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
6. Guess what? There’s a chance to win a Keurig coffee maker and read about Green Mountain coffee on my giveaway page.
7. The fires in Texas. We desperately need rain. Please continue to pray for Texas. It’s so sad.
8. I think that’s it. Y’all have a great day.

#3 “So I’ll just say Baylor would be a lot more credible if they had a conference record that was better than 18-101 over the last fourteen years.
Sometimes if you love something you have to let it go, Baylor. If it doesn’t come back it’s because it won’t miss you at all when you’re playing in the Southland Conference.”
Bahaha!!
as the #2 commenter, i’m going to stick up for my alma mater.
easy, big mama. easy.
i *could* make aggie jokes right now. but i won’t.
I deserve an Aggie joke. I was a little too strident about my thoughts. Love you, Janet!
Oh, I have Sept 13th marked, too, and am trying to decide which of our three area Targets will be most likely to have those cute Missoni flats in stock. And the tote bag.
Definitely praying for those affected by the Texas fires. Dear Lord, send them a week long, soaking rain!
I want the stacked Missoni coffee cups. They are the one “designer” thing from Tarjay I might just pay full price for
As a Baylor alumni~ouch! So much for the if you can’t say something nice comment. And sic ‘em bears! I agree with Janet’s comments. At least you can’t buy our Baylor shirts at Walmart!
You’re right Kristi- I should have have tempered my comment. I’ll blame it on too much time obsessed with sports news yesterday.
I know that we Baylor Bears look like the bad guys…but here is where we stand: http://www2.baylor.edu/baylorproud/
I think it beautifully presents our stance and that we have rich traditions to.
Oh Kristi, thank you. It’s nice to see another Bear stick up for our school.
I love both of your comments. That article was a great read and really does explain our side. And the Walmart comment…I almost spit my water out. Fantastic. I would like to add that my spirit wear doesn’t come from a gas station either.
Sic ‘em.
Ok, so actually you can buy Baylor shirts at Waco area Wal-Marts right now but that’s only because the CEO’s son is currently a student, which I don’t think any of us could construe as a negative…
And I think it’s important to note there is a difference between threatening legal action (which we have not) and refusing to waive a right before all ramifications of a move are apparent (which would be bad business sense).
That being said, I do share your love for fashion and Caroline’s love for glitter
LOL, it’s “My very excellent mother JUST served us nine pizzas”…. except now without the pizzas of course. The JUST is pretty important as well, as it represents the largest planet in our solar system!
I really wish we could send you our rain clouds. It’d be so perfect considering the flooding here (and by here I mean all of the rivers, streams, roads, and my basement). Praying for some Texas rain and a break for the northeast.
I’ll be praying for rain…we’ve had five straight days of pouring rain and schools are closed today due to flooded roads. Too much or not enough…there must be a happy medium out there somewhere in America!
We’re Tennessee fans-bring it : )
Hey now…..be careful with your Baylor friends!
We are just as loyal to our University…..winning record or not!
Love you, Big Mama!
It is never nice to pick on the little guy. I think you may have just channeled your inner 7th grade mean girl. As we Bears say – bless your heart.
Praying for rain!!!!!
Molly- I let my frustrations over the situation get the best of me. Certainly didn’t mean to channel my inner 7th grade mean girl.
I totally understand the strong feelings and frustrations. I am sorry I got sucked in too!!!
I didn’t think you were being too mean. I think we all know you were directing your remarks to the “powers that be” at Baylor, not all the loyal Baylor fans and alumni out there.
Good morning. I really don’t have anything to add to or comment on about your list so I’ll say/write a few things on my mind this morning….. 1) I received my Angie Smith book yesterday and really can not wait to get some time soon to read it. It looks like it’s going to strike a chord in many, many women’s hearts. 2) Does anyone out there in Big Mama Blogland watch ‘Top Shot’? My husband and I love it! 3) Can I still wear my white skirt even though it’s now after Labor Day? Perhaps you’ve written about that whole dumb ‘white after Labor Day’ issue and I’ve just missed it.
Can’t think of anything else at the moment. Have a wonderful day!
I have been praying for rain. We have a friend who lives in Bastrop who is just about in panic mode. Well it’s me that’s in panic mode for her. She’s just as calm as could be. She had the best outlook over the whole thing. And I’m with you, while I love my Baylor friends, BAYLOR, GET OVER IT! Oh and Bud Selig needs to get a grip too! He should be happy someone wants to by the Astros. OK off my soap box. Have a great day!
It is definitely worth the extra miles and stoplights to go to a Target. Anytime.
But, then I have to drive an hour just to get to a Target being from southwest KS and all. LOL! The fires are definitely sad and we will keep praying.
Side-swept bangs? I bet they look cute! I am never able to recreate the stylist’s look. My hair seems to have a mind of its own, and it made its mind up that some look between wavy and kinky with maybe a leetle bit of straight thrown in was going to work for us. I disagree.
Um, maybe it says something for my science skills when I did not even notice your solar system flub. Although I learned it as “Many Very Elegant Men Just Saw Us Near Pluto.” Which I realize is sort of lame since it actually says “Pluto” at the end, but it is the only thing that worked for me….
As a Baylor grad I get where they are coming from but I have family from A&M so I understand where you are coming from i just wish people could remeber it is not just football, while Baylor has not been strong in that area they have many other sports they do really well at (Basketball mens and women, baseball, softball) etc. I think people forget it is hard to compete when you are a small school that does not get any state funding. Just my 2 cents. Oh and by the way I still love to read your blog even if you are an Aggie, we all make mistakes
Well, TCU is an even smaller school than Baylor and we have earned our spot in the Big East by working hard all these years since Baylor made sure we didn’t get in the Big 12. It’s not so funny when you are the one left out of conference realignment!
I hope the Aggies do get to the SEC, I think they will be fairly successful there.
It is obvious we take our football very seriously in Texas!
My nephew, along with hundreds of others, lost his home in the Bastrop fires.
Please hold this community in your prayers. It will be a long recovery period.
my good friend lost her home as well. prayers going out to all of them.
and can I say that I am so glad right now that I do not follow college football—-at all.
Regarding #1 – how funny. Yesterday I was reading your post via google reader and started laughing. I asked my hubby (sitting next to me) why would there an O in the acronym? Is it because Saturn has rings??? DUH!!! Apparently my second grader isn’t going to do any better….
I’m with you on the homeschooling thing. That’s a huge amount of pressure. That’s why I teach at a high school!
hehe
I thought of you last night when I was at Open House at the high school. I almost had a panic attack in my daughter’s Algebra 2 class! As it was the class I had to repeat my Senior year. Enjoy elementary school while it lasts! The solar system is a cake walk compared to memorizing the periodic table! Praying for rain for you guys!
Being a LSU alum, I understand the power and awesomeness that is the SEC. Do you want A&M to be a part of the SEC? I don’t understand why Baylor wouldn’t want to A&M to move over to the SEC. I’m going to go read.
I love the SEC.
That is all!
Oh wait, no I’m getting side sweep bangs next week. Pray for me, mkay?
Got an email from my 80 year old grandpa yesterday in which he called Ken Starr a “Turkey”. I agree, Grandpa, I agree.
For the record, as a proud Aggie, I do not have any ill will against Baylor. I just don’t appreciate them going back on what they previously agreed to. However, I have heard rumors that they may have been pressured by another school (t.u.) to raise a stink in a last ditch effort to keep the big 12 (-2, 3?) in tact.
All that being said, I would gladly trade any smooth conference realignment for a few inches of rain. Praying for fans of every school in the great state of texas that we may see some relief soon! I’m in west Houston and it smells like a campfire outside of my house.
Praying our rain stops and it starts up in TX. I have been keeping a watch on the fires, and it’s seriously scary! I hope everyone stays safe and that you guys get some relief by the way of rain, soon.
Rather than if you love something you have to let it go I would look at as if someone doesn’t want to be with you why do you want to be with them?! We’re Texas Tech fans in this house (yes, I know, Who? you ask) and we kinda feel like if A&M wants to go then by all means GO! Just hope we end up in a decent situation when the dust clears!
1. You are so stinking funny.
2. So is Caroline
3. As a Texas Tech person, I personally am sad that we are going to perhaps lose some of our traditions and rivalries. Thanksgiving will just be wrong if Ya’ll don’t play UT. AND Texas / OU weekend– Hello??? State Fair of Texas will just not be the same. Having said that , I am sure we will survive.
4. Side swept bangs, I want to go there.
5. The whole Missoni / Target marriage has me giddy. I am trying to keep my expectations in check.
6. Fires bad. Need rain. Pray Much. ( can we turn that into a book title?)
Having a Baylor bear for a daughter, I have to laugh at the comment of Bear shirts not available at Walmart! I have, however, see them at the Target in Waco! Yes please, please be praying for rain! I am actually praying for TS Nate to come visit.. I live in Magnolia where the fires currently are and I can not tell you how scary it is to not know where the winds will push the flames next. My trees/yard are so dry from lack of rain and there is smoke every where.
so yesterday i am looking at your acronym and reciting the planets in my head… got to “O” and completely drew a blank. how could i forget the names of the planets? i should have googled it right then but thought about it throughout the evening… thank you for admitting you made a mistake. and shame on me for not realizing i missed saturn. must be the 25 years between graduation and now.
ME TOO! Missoni at Target is on my calendar too! I cannot wait. And my husband is already gonna flip out when we get the credit card bill this month. School is expensive! …and I’ll probably have to admit that a few things were more than $15. I have now decided to forgo Starbucks and stockpile the cash because Missoni! Affordable! At Target! Resistance is futile.
I realllllly want the Missoni bicycle! Is it ok to be 40 & ride a bike with an adorable print painted on it?
Dilemma!
YES! Anything’s ok when you’re 40. Live it up!!
Here’s my list:
1. I googled Rachel Zoe. Zoe pronounced like faux. I think. I’ve never seen a thinner woman — who was still alive. Maybe the photo was pre-pregnancy? I’m pretty sure your beautiful, adorable daughter weights more than Rachel. No, I’m positive. Anyway, I know now who Rachel Zoe is and why she is a VeryImportantPerson. And deserves to own two $1000 diaper bags.
2. I must google Baylor. No moans please. I live in California. I know nothing about football. How is this possible? No idea.
3. There is a BIG problem with mnemonics. You actually have to remember the phrase, correctly remember the silly phase in order for it it work. I have completely forgotten how to add fractions, so how can I be expected to remember “My very good mother . . . ”
4. I’m praying the rain that’s being dumped in the Northeast — where they have too much — will instead move to Texas. I don’t understand why no one’s fixed this weather problem. When I was a kid (a half-century ago) “they” said it would be soon fixed. Really. It was first we put a man on the moon, then we fix the weather. So, how’s about it?
Thanks for the insight on the pronounciation of Zoe. I seriously thought it was pronounced like Joey except with a Z. Haven’t ever watched her show and don’t know what she looks like. Guess I’ll have to google her to find that out – and find out why she’s famous.
Just a few words for you, Big, on this very important week –
WELCOME TO THE SEC and War Eagle!
Hey Mel,
You left out Jupiter on your #1
My Very Excellent Mother JUST Served Us Nine Pizzas… Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
So much tension over football. Yikes. But I say that only because my alma mater is not the center of attention (on this particular day!). I’ve endured my share of pain from being a fan.
Thanking everyone that is praying for rain. My husband’s cousin, his wife and their two young children just (finally) found out today that their house did not make it in the Bastrop fire. We are devastated for them. We all need rain so bad here so this awful fire business can just stop.
I am looking forward to Fashion Friday tomorrow. I will admire and look at all the clothes that I want but won’t get. Fun times.
(Go Blue!)
Can you blame Baylor? If they end up in a non-aq conference, it’s about so much more than football–they’d lose hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue for the university at large, hundreds of millions of dollars to the Central Texas economy (along with more than 5k jobs), etc. Why would they waive their right to sue without gaining something in return?
from last summer—
“And the Big 12 made a significant financial commitment to keep Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas in the conference. At the end of the day, we kept our word, which as an Aggie, is extremely important.” – R. Bowen Loftin – June 16, 2010
Well our family is just plain sad about the entire football war. My husband is an Aggie with maroon blood running throuh his veins. But the “apple of his eye” is at Baylor and living her dream as a coed cheerleader there. She even said “Goodbye to Texas University” as she turned down a spot after making it on their squad. My husband dressed in Baylor green last Friday as he cheered on Baylor to a win against TCU , then Sunday, put on his maroon and attended the aggie game. Enjoyed every minute of both! This just stinks! It’s the first time my feelings have been hurt reading here and I didn’t even attend either college. But you are forgiven. The fires here in Texas just puts everything into perspecitive. Ashes were falling from the sky tonight as I attended my son’s football game. Praying for rain and comfort for those that have lost so much.
Melanie, this probably reflects on my lack of a nuanced understanding of the re-alignment fiasco, but my biggest frustration is the thought of not having A&M and t.u. play anymore. What happens to the fight song? Whose horns are we sawing off?! So sad.
As a Hog I say, “Welcome to the SEC Aggies! Woo Pig Soieee!”
Praying for rain in Texas!
Wow, those Bears fans were way harsh on you! Gig ‘em!!!
I think it’s hilarious that your Baylor readers were giving you a hard time. You said nothing offensive. I was surprised that you edited it. How about Baylor congratulating Texas A&M? Wouldn’t that reflect well on a “Christian” university rather than a law suit & going against your word! All those Baylor alum shouldn’t be too proud. Their athletic department is already dirty – look who they recruit – players who commit murder & beat their girlfriends. I have lots of dear friends who are Baylor alum, but mercy, they should know when to keep quite. Glad some Aggies sent them a nice message via a billboard on 35 in Waco – “Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s conference deal. -God”.
