Fashion Friday: Edition the fashion must go on

I think it’s probably obvious that I haven’t been up for much shopping this week. In fact, I haven’t been up for much of anything that doesn’t involve lying on the couch in my pajamas. Thankfully, P has more than taken up the slack around here. He’s let me sleep in late, packed Caroline’s lunch and gotten her off to school every morning, and even unloaded the dishwasher yesterday. And here I thought I just married him for the eye candy.

So I started looking around online to see if I could find anything cute and came up short. I don’t know if it’s because I’m on a lot of cold medicine or if I’m just tired or if three straight days in pajamas has clouded my judgment, but nothing really appealed to me.

But I thought it might be fun to do something different. I know a lot of people use Pinterest to discover all manner of crafty activities and birthday party ideas. However, I use it for fashion. Where else can you sit on your couch in holey pajamas and get great wardrobe ideas?

One of the things I love the most is to see what other people are wearing and then try to recreate it with things I already have in my closet or things I can find for a bargain.

Here are a few outfit combinations I love right now.

1.  I love this because it’s simple and totally easy to copy.  A simple t-shirt,  scarf and jeans with Toms.  The perfect Mom outfit.

2.  This is a little dressier than anything my life calls for, but I would love it if I were still working in an office setting because it’s made up of pieces that could also be worn on the weekend.  I’m a fan of the unexpected mix of colors.

3.  I’m a little obsessed with orange.  I believe I’ve mentioned that.  So I adore this orange and gray together.

4.  Maybe it’s just me but I believe a denim jacket is an essential part of any wardrobe.  It’s a great transitional piece and can add that perfect something to any outfit.   I love how this necklace and the unexpected tan boots make a simple black dress into something great.

5.  Love the simplicity of this.

6.  I don’t know if I could pull off this outfit but I really like the way all these different pieces come together to make a great look.  It makes me want to look in my closet and see what I can pull together from things that may not seem like they go together at first glance.

7.  This is another easy outfit that pops because of the color combinations.

8.  Um.  Orange and gray again?  Yes.

9.  Love the way leopard print flats and an orange  bag (I know. I’m obsessed.) can make an outfit fun.

10.  I also really like blue and green together.  Super cute coat.

11.  Do you kind of feel like I’m pushing the whole t-shirt and scarf thing?  It’s because I am.  I just want you to see how easy it is to put together an inexpensive outfit that still looks great.  Sometimes it’s just all about the right accessories.

12.  T-shirt.  Scarf.  I have a problem.

13.   Now this is a little different because it’s a long sleeve, SLOUCHY t-shirt with an infinity scarf.  Seriously.  I have a problem.

14.  The jacket makes this totally different.  Plus I love the green with the gray and the cream jacket.  You could totally put this together from pieces you’d find at Forever 21 or TJ Maxx or Target.

15.  This has nothing to do with fashion, but I really like her haircut.  Any thoughts on whether or not I should get my hair cut like this?  I think we all know that it’s the bangs that appeal to me, yet frighten me at the same time.

Y’all have a great Friday.

I had that haircut about a year ago, and then had someone botch my bangs REAL BAD, and have been trying to get back to that haircut ever since. Long, side-swept bangs are really easy as long as your hairdresser doesn’t pull too much from the back. The key is in using a big roller to blow-dry them upwards and to the side, then sweeping them over. You can do it!

  2. 2

Okay, I really like this…being able to see all the elements of the outfit together really helps those of us who are fashion-challenged (this is one area where we are not at all alike in the slightest). As for the haircut. It’s really cute. But I share the fear of bangs so I don’t know. I think it depends on whether you have any natural curl in your hair or not. I do, and with bangs, all I get is a clump of curl in front of my head. Very difficult to tame, especially in humidity (shudder). But if your hair is very straight, I think this look would be easier to manage.

  3. 3

That was fun! Love the haircut too.

  4. 4

Love the fashions today! I love to see the complete outfit put together and these are so easy to do! This is exactly what I need. Thank you. I love the hair cut.

  5. 5

I am right there with you on the t-shirt/scarf thing! I wear them constantly!! So thankful Fall is finally here in Texas so I can start pulling all of my scarves out again!

  6. 6

Oh, I really like this edition of Fashion Friday! Maybe you could do it this way every now and again? I think I do a pretty good job of picking out cute wardrobe pieces, but my struggle is with putting it all together. I loved seeing all of the cute outfits with shoes, accessories, etc… Hope you start feeling better soon!

  7. 7

OH my goodness! I just joined Pinterest this week and I could sit and look at Heather Rolin’s pinboards all day long! LOVE!!!

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. I never knew about Pinterest. Yes, as I’ve said before I lead a sheltered life. Remember I still haven’t tried Pimento cheese? I love seeing the whole outfit. Plus if you scroll over some of the pictures they’ll tell you where to buy and the cost. Like the Hermes handbag is a replica and costs about $500 and is still out of my budget. Hope you feel better soon and have bought stock in Kimberly-Clark so you can financially benefit from being miserable.

If you would just replace all that ugly orange (too close to tu’s burnt orange) and replace it with a great maroon then you would have a great line up!

  9. 10

I adore all those outfits. And may I add the picture of Diana Agron has helped me firm up some hair related goals for Fall!!

  10. 11

Oh you are on fire today! I just love your blog and now love that you have done all the work for me regarding fall fashion. Thankfully most of this stuff I have buried in my closet (cheaper versions but that’s okay) with no idea how to put together (till now). Yeehaw, this post is a favorite:)

  11. 12

That hair is gorgeous, I say DO IT!

I feel I’m skating the fine line of too much scarf with the tshirt. It’s almost daily. Is that bad? I love target tees and I love a good scarf. I can’t get away! Also, I think stud earrings are great with scarves. Just throwin’ that out there.

I’m loving pinterest. So much fun.
    The haircut is great!

    Jennifer in Ohio says:

OK, where’s the button I click to order one of everything?? Such fantastic outfits that I would never be able to pull together on my own.

  14. 15

You should TOTALLY cut your hair like that! :-) The outfits are gorgeous, too.

  15. 16

That hair cut would work if a.) you have thick hair that looks voluminious all on its own, or b.) you have fine hair, but are committed to using hot rollers EVERY morning. I asked my hairdresser about a similar style, but alas, I have fine hair and have never owned a set of hot rollers.

  16. 17

Try the bangs! I have them and love the versatility. Check out this blog I found and see the tutorials on flat ironing, etc. She is fantastic, has the same bangs as the picture you posted. I have no connection to her and don’t know her :) just appreciate her style. http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com/ She even gives fun tricks for the bangs when you get tired of them being on your face in hot weather!
Hope you feel better soon! That P is a great guy!!

Fun post, cute outfits, love the hair. Since you have such a love for scarfs can you do a post somehow on the different ways to tie/wear/wrap the scarfs?
    Hope you feel better soon!

  18. 19

Very nice. I love crusing the outfits from Polyvore over on Pinterest, too! It does really help to see things pulled together in a complete outfit. But I’m always bummed when I find something I love and it was originally affordable but now unavailable.

Maybe part of your t-shirt and scarf preoccupation has to do with the fact that nearly every polyvore outfit you see with jeans also include a t & scarf!! I think it’s a national craze.

  19. 20

A definite YES on the haircut. From the pictures you’ve shared, it’s not a huge change and could easily by grown out, or restyled if you hate it. Go For It!

  20. 21

I’m so addicted to Pinterest and the first time I went on Polyvore I spent so many hours putting together outfits that I had to stage an intervention with myself.

Love all those outfits, by the way.

As for the hair, I got bangs last weekend (first time I’ve had them in a long time) and it was a little shocking at first but now I love them. So I say go for it!

  21. 22

LOVE the outfits, LOVE the hair. Go for it! I have a deep desire for side-swept bangs but have finally given up on them. I think my hair is too fine and lifeless for them. But they are oh so pretty!

  22. 23

i love the way you are able to put pieces together. this is so not my area of expertise…wanna be my personal shopper?!?
thank you so much for all the great ideas!!
hope you get to feeling better

This is a GREAT post! I have that orange bag, but put it up since Fall rolled around, but I keep seeing orange everywhere … hmmm, perhaps I should bring it back out. Thanks for the inspiration.

I too am fashion challenged, so today is a good day … totally copying MOST of the looks ….

Feel better … oh and YES, you should get the haircut!

  24. 25

This was probably my favorite favorite Fashion Friday because it showed whole looks together. It inspired me to shop my closet for some outfits. By the way, that cute orange bag is a Birken bag from Hermes…. it runs about $10,000. Yes. Ten thousand dollars.

      Marie M.C. says:

I checked by rolling over the picture and the owner claims it’s not the real-deal but a replica that costs over $500. Still way too rich for my budget. And I’m surprised the copy-cat police haven’t pulled it from the market.

      • 27

Yikes! $500 is still too rich for my blood. What a “bargain” compared to the real deal. ;)

  25. 28

I have a problem with scarves, too. I LOVE them. I could wear them every single day. And…many days I do just that! They are just so cozy, and add such great color and drama to every outfit.

I LOVED all the outfits you featured today!!!! I SURE HOPE you feel better soon. Oh, and I just had to tell you…Because you inspired me to start the C25K last year (I’m a SLOW trainer, obviously), I am running my FIRST-EVER 5K tomorrow!!!!! AAAHHHHHH!!!!! I seriously can hardly believe my lazy body can run 3 miles. I never believed I would be able to do it… And the craziest thing of all? I kind of like running. Not WHILE I’m running the first mile, mind you. I hate it then. But, if I can get past that first mile, and I have some good music in my ears (preferably Mandisa’s “Stronger”) I like it after that. And I REALLY like it after I’m done, and can drink a Coke without feeling guilty. :-) So, thanks for the inspiration!!

    Nerd Girl says:

LOVE Pinterest. I have a few of those outfits pinned to my dream closet board.

I’ve got to say…I don’t get the appeal of Toms at all. I know they’re in, but to me they’re just swap meet shoes that cost $50. Oh well, to each her own!

    Have a great weekend.

  27. 30

#5 is soooooo me. Love all of the outfits but that is the one that I would most likely be seen in if I had to choose from all of the ones shown. I would also LOVE some TOM shoes. Great, great ministry they have going on there.

Really hope you are starting to feel better. Have a great weekend and I love that hairstyle. I haven’t made the move to bangs yet either. I want them so badly but am scared they are going to look horrible on me.

  28. 31

Yes to the haircut! That would be perfect on you!

  29. 32

Oh, how I needed this tutorial! Thank you for being my go-to fashion consultant.

  30. 33

THANK YOU!!! for this post today – I LOVE your posting of the outfit ideas – please please do it again soon and often!! I’m a fan and follower of your blog and especially Fashion Fridays but this is even better for me since nearly 99% of my clothes come from garage sales, hand-me-downs, Goodwill, etc. and reworking what I’ve already got is the best!! I adore the scarf/tee/jean/boot combo – that’s my outfit of choice and you’ve helped me “up my game” with this – THANKS again!!!

  31. 34

You don’t have a t-shirt problem. I mean, would you trust anyone who didn’t like a nice, soft t-shirt? I wouldn’t. As for the hair cut, it’s VERY chic and think it would look great on you (I don’t know why I speak with such authority this morning). But I think what’s really appealing to you (and this is my hairdresser sister speaking through me) is the way it’s styled and also the dimension her highlights give the hairstyle/cut. It’s hard to get a look like that as a brunette (I KNOW!!!!!!) because our hair doesn’t have that… thing blondes have. A few thin strands of natural highlights placed naturally would make this totally bonafide for you. If in doubt, take Caroline with you to the Salon and tell the hairdresser “like this” becuase little girls have the best natural highlights.

  32. 35

Wow, I really like how you did this post!
    Hope you’re feeling better soon.

  33. 36

Love the outfits…now could you go shopping for me? Also, I think you SHOULD get the haircut… super cute!!

PS – check out my husband’s blog when you have time…

  34. 37

Oh, good! I was a little worried that Hazel might want to take over Fashion Friday, and that might mean comfortable loafers with good arch support and maybe a nice elastic-waist pant. I like your Pinterest choices much more. I adooooore Pinterest!

  35. 38

Any chance I could follow you on Pinterest?? Love all of your pins!!!

  36. 39

    I want it ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. 40

My favorite fashion Friday ever. Love these outfits; I would wear any of them. I’ve been avoiding pinterest knowing that it will suck me in. I think I’m now ready to cave.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  38. 41

THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Love the outfits together. Love that I can see what shoes and bags go where, what colors/prints I can safely mix (or that it’s even OK to mix colors at all – I may just back away from the black at some point now). I am seriously fashion challenged, and I live by Fashion Friday, but with this one….I believe you have changed my (fashion) life. Thanks!

    Christy S. says:

Gorgeous outfits – now I feel compelled to check out Pinterest. I have resisted so far.

Also, I think I’m the only person in the world that feels this way, but I HATE Toms. I think they look like Memaw’s house shoes. That is all.

  40. 43

So one thing I’ve learned while living here in the UK is that you don’t really have to match when picking out an outfit. Ha. Heck, you can even wear the same clothes 3 days in a row. But my point it, I’ve learned to mix and match things that I never thought would go together and it’s so fun! I love the pics you posted, great ideas!

    Amy Galli says:

I am in love!!! I need these outfits…I may have to print out pictures to help me put them together for myself!!

And as for bangs, I LOVE THEM!!! And this hairstyle is just beautiful!!! Go for it!!!

  42. 45

This has to be my favorite Fashion Friday EVER! I can always find cute things but putting them all together is always my problem. I would love all these looks….it’s just affording all the pieces is the problem. I love the hair! Wondering if the bangs would be in your eyes all the time though or if it would be hard to get it to look like that all the time.

  43. 46

Sorry that you are sick, but I really like this edition of Fashion Friday! It’s very practical and I like seeing all the pieces together and like you said I can now go to my closet and start putting things together. So I too would like to see more!

  44. 47

I love the blocks of entire outfits – very cool!

I tried the side swept bangs. Didn’t work on me :( But I have a feeling you are one of those that could totally pull them off!

  45. 48

Pinterest is my favorite new addiction. I love the selections this week. And that one outfit with the cowboy boots looks so you.

I’m excited about the scarf and t-shirts and I’ve been pulling that together too. I think it is an easy way to dress yourself up when you have little kids. This from the person who hates to wear her good clothes around my boys for free of something yucky getting wiped on me.

Hope you will be on the mend soon. Feel better!

  46. 49
    Christina W. says:

Love that haircut! Though, I would need a personal stylist every day to make it look that good and not have it end up in a ponytail. Ha! Also, I like the mini storyboard with the outfits! A nice way to mix things up. Though I also appreciate focusing on a single great piece. Hope you feel better soon!

  47. 50

I think you need an orange intervention…..I’m just sayin…..

  48. 51

Love that fashion show! Don’t think there was any combo I didn’t love! The haircut appeals to me too…but I have a weird cowlick at the front and bangs don’t ever do what I want. I really like the cut though. Thanks for the visual dress up fun!

  49. 52

Your hair could totally pull off that haircut, and it would look FANTASTIC on you! My hair…not so much (and you know who else I always say has my hair)
I think you should do it. :)
    Love, Your Sister-In-Law

    OHH super cute stuff today.

Scarfs, t-shirts and boots. OH MY.

    Love the hair!

Long time reader of your blog. I know you have addressed topics such as this before. I need help. I will be having my 20th class reunion Thanksgiving weekend. The dress is dressy casual. I live in southwest GA. so it could be 40 or 80 degrees! Please share some suggestions. Your fashion advice is great! Jodi
