An ounce of prevention – Perfect Portions Scale giveaway

So here’s the hardest thing about trying to eat healthy. Well, not the hardest thing because that would be all the not eating of the cookies and the chips and the bowls of queso and fresh flour tortillas that are an inch thick, but it’s all relative these days.

My biggest issue has always been all these recipe sites or Weight Watcher guidelines that tell you to eat 4 oz of lunch meat or a 6 oz chicken breast. How am I supposed to know that? Am I some sort of food mathematician? Am I supposed to have some kind of unagi that helps me sense the weight of four slices of ham?

Because I don’t have that.

That’s why I was thrilled to get the Perfect Portions – Food Scale with Nutritional Calculator from Best Buy. It instantly adjusts your food’s nutritional facts to your portion size with its food scale and nutritional calculator in one. A touch of a button shows you how many calories are in food and also tracks the sugar content.

See? It does all the hard work for you. Then all you have to do is enjoy those three delicious and totally filling slices of turkey breast with a side of four carrots and an apple.

Maybe for fun I’ll make a big bowl of queso and put that on it or a cheeseburger from Whataburger. It might cause the thing to blow a fuse, but I wouldn’t really do that because I am committed to healthy eating.

The Perfect Portions Scale has helped me so much because it gives me an accurate count of the calories I’m consuming and the nutritional content of all my meals. For someone like me†who doesn’t like to think about those things or use some kind of old-fashioned weighted scale, it is SOLID GOLD. †If you’re trying to make some healthy lifestyle changes, this scale may be just the thing for you.

While you’re at it, take the pledge!

The good news is that you have a chance to win†a Perfect Portions – Food Scale with Nutritional Calculator†for yourself.

To be entered for a chance to win, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post letting me know how much thought you put into portion size and what you eat during the day. Do you measure? Do you obsess? Or do you eat an entire sleeve of cookies and call it a serving size? Not that I’ve ever done that.

Anyway, here are the rules:

I don’t think about it nearly as much as I ought to! And that is why I need that scale.

  2. 2

If by think about portion size you mean say ‘yes’ when they ask if I want large fries at Chick-Fil-A, then yes I portion size. :)

  3. 3

I try to think about portion size–but I usually eyeball it so I may be off by a thousand calories or so.

  4. 4

yeah, I’m kind-of bad at portion size so this would be very helpful!

  5. 5

When I count calories and exercise, I lose weight. When I exercise and eat what I think is “about right”, I don’t lose. Because evidently my “about right” are portions for someone my husband’s size (and he’s a foot taller than I am).

I wish with all of my heart that this was not so.

  6. 6

I used my old Weight Watcher scale to bake my way through Rose’s Heavenly Cakes with the Heavenly Cake Bakers. Yep, all the cakes. Now I have a personal trainer rouse me out of the house three times a day, maybe four and sometimes five. I inherited a dog who is a relentless walker! I could use a scale like this. I always wanted to know what the sugar count is in a slice a cake! I’ve lost the weight gained from that little baking venture, now I’d like to lose the rest of the baby weight. ‘Course my babies are 30 and 28…..

  7. 7

My husband and I are really trying to eat healthier. This would be such a big help. I always rough estimate if it can’t be measured in a measuring cup!

  8. 8

I have just started WW and am trying to be very good with measurements and portions. These scales would help tremendously!

  9. 9

Wow, I didn’t know they even made such a thing! That would take so much time out of my new “lifestyle” and allow me more time to have a real life! :)

From my WW experience years ago, they gave you some practical ideas like a serving of meat was about the size of a deck of cards or your palm. That helped a little, but I would still obsess over it. In fact, I ended up quitting the program after a while because I felt like I was MORE obsessed with eating than I would be on my own. Turns out I was wrong because I didn’t keep the weight off.

In August, I began to use myfooddiary.com which is a program that helps calculate what you eat. Very enlightening as far as how many calories I had been eating…no wonder I couldn’t lose weight by just watching what I was eating. Long story short, I’ve given up diet plans because Jillian Michaels and old school docs are right…it’s all about calories and exercise. That nifty scale would go a long way in my house, and who knows, it just might get my hubby on a program too.

  10. 10

My husband and I started doing the P90X workout program about two and a half months ago and started really paying attention to portion sizes and everything about a month ago. This scale would be AWESOME in helping us keep track!

  11. 11

Wow!!!! I should not be thinking about finding a way to put a slab of ribs- a T-bone……or a Blizzard on there…..seriously what a great tool.

  12. 12

I do think about portion control but I have no idea unless it’s on the package.

  13. 13

I count my calories 6 days a week. A scale like this would be a dream come true. Often the healthier choices like raw fruits and veggies do not come with a sticker on them. I’m loving your posts on health and fitness. Go you!

  14. 14

I don’t pay much attention to portion sizes, so this would help a lot.

  15. 15

This scale would be helpful because just eyeballing things is not cutting it!

  16. 16
    Aunt Granny says:

I am way behind the times…I had no idea such a device was available. What a great tool! The only thing I have ever used to determine portion size is my little (antique) postage scale. I hope I win!!

  17. 17

I do watch portion size most of the time. Until it comes to my baked cheetos. In my mind, there’s no way that 33 pieces are a serving size. It’s easily twice that.

  18. 18

I would love to win this for myself, but mostly for my middle school FACS class. It would be great to teach 6, 7, and 8th graders about portion size and nutrition.

  19. 19

I am pretty good at looking at the portion sizes and trying to stick to that, except when it comes to ice cream! My best way to fight portion control with ice cream is to not bring any into the house!

  20. 20

    wow! So cool!

  21. 21

This would be great for me. Yes, I think about protion size but need to work a lot harder on this. I need motivation, maybe this will help.

  22. 22

I think about it, but i don’t obsess over it meaning i often eat more than a portion size! that scale would be perfect.

  23. 23

I don’t even eyeball it anymore…which is probably why I haven’t lost a single pound!

  24. 24

I just got on the bandwagon … after a ski trip to Vail. I thought I was in pretty good shape (I play tennis 2-3 times per week), but skiing wore.me.out. And, I did the 30-Day Shred video yesterday for the first time in years. I’m so sore! But, I know that what I eat (and how much) is more important for weight loss and changing my shape than the exercise that I do, so I’m committed. (For now, at least!)

  25. 25

I try to eyeball it but you know what they say, sometimes (or always in my case) your eyes are bigger than your tummy. I’m a pathetic person.

  26. 26
    Georgeanne says:

I pay attention to portion size and attempt to control the size, but usually just by guesswork. The scale would make it a lot easier!!!

  27. 27

Entire sleeve of cookie kind of person!

  28. 28
    Katie Smith says:

I don’t obsess with portion sizes, but I need to start. I do eat my food on a salad plate to cut back some. It helps a good bit!!:) thanks for the giveaway:)

  29. 29

I guess when I see a serving size that says ____ ounces. I’ve learned that I’m usually way off when I guess, but I still do it anyway. I really need this scale ha!

  30. 30

I don’t obsess, but do try to watch my portion sizes. Maybe that is why I am just maintaining and not losing! I Need this scale! Thank you very much!

  31. 31

What a cool scale! I need to think about portion size way more than I do!

  32. 32
    Spiritmom says:

My portion size is whatever is left after my 3 hungry sons take what they want. Usually it’s not much.

    Connie Heggie says:

Unfortunately I do not measure portions…Of course, if I win these scales I might possibly eat healthier! ! !

  34. 34

Up until recently I would eyeball the portions and make myself stop if I’d already had one (or two) servings. However now that we have a baby on the way I’ve been instructed to eat, eat, eat!

  35. 35

I think about portion size but then, it depresses me because a portion size is not a “what I want” size. Anywho, this scale would be very helpful for both me AND my daughter!

  36. 36

This would help me realize what 3 oz really looks like versus using portion sizes by the measurement of my hand. I mean, I don’t have big man hands BUT I may or may not exaggerate their size when doing portions…THEN I have big man hands!!! :)

  37. 37

This scale would be so helpful to me! I’ve been trying to be careful about portion size, but my “guess-estimates” are probably way too big! I would be a very grateful winner! :)

  38. 38

I have an old fashioned food scale and I use it. Portion control is one of my “issues”

  39. 39
    Louise in NE OK says:

I am back on Weight Watchers. I am a gadget kind of girl. I would love to win this scale. I know that I would use it. Thanks for the opportunity.

BTW, you are a great writer and story teller. I start my day checking your blog. My only granddaughter is Caroline’s age. I can relate! ha

  40. 40

I hate thinking about exact portion sizes… I just tend to eyeball things… Except that has lead to me eyeballing my ever expanding thighs!! I know I need to be more exact & this scale looks like it takes the “difficulty” out of measuring.

  41. 41

I just recently joined Weight Watcher’s and have into this issue so many times. I feel like I’m cheating myself on the program since I have no clue how many ounces of chicken I ate for dinner last night or how many ounces of meat I can have on my Subwat sub for lunch today!!!

  43. 43

I could really use something like this. I have never had a food scale and I know I ALWAYS underestimate how much I’m actually eating.

  44. 44

Unless I am on a weighloss kick…I just aimlessly shove food in my mouf :(

  45. 45

I measure but I am not this precise… this scale looks awesome!

  46. 46

I was thinking over the weekend that I need to get a new food scale. Mine is old and inaccurate.

  47. 47

I usually think about serving sizes after I eat a big meal, feel totally uncomfortable, and then think, “What in the world did I just eat?”

  48. 48

I don’t have a scale and I eyeball, I had a baby 14 mths ago, and need to lose a few pounds I’m sure this would be better than eyeballing!

  49. 49

I have a real problem with portion control. It would be so great to have a tool like this.

  50. 50

I use to measure and weigh all my food when I had gestational diabetes. Not so much anymore, I just kind of eyeball it!!

  51. 51

One of my least favorite things about dieting is determining the portion and calorie content. I would love to have a scale that helps with that task!

  52. 52

I give virtually no thought to portions, although I think I do ok since I try to separate ahead of time into smaller dishes. This scale would really help me!!

  53. 53

Wow, this thing sounds genius. I’ve been entering in recipes on calorie calculators online to try and get nutritional information. This would be a whole lot easier.

  54. 54

What’s a portion? :) I usually eat a moderate amount, but this would help me be more aware of how many calories I’m snarfing down.

  55. 55

I don’t obsess, but I should. I generally know what a portion size is but at the same time choose to ignore it.

  56. 56

I try and pay attention to portion control. But having this scale would make life much easier than just trying to guess at it.

  57. 57

I don’t think about it much at all, but I do think those guidelines about what a portion size of meat, carbs, veggies is supposed to be has “kind of” stuck in my brain…deck of cards, fist, etc. I’m not saying I FOLLOW them or anything…unless something doesn’t taste very good. Then I’m all over it.

  58. 58
    Mary Morris says:

We have an old spring food scale that’s horrible! I would love this

  59. 59

This scale would be perfect for my husband. He is trying to lose weight and has no clue about portion size.

  60. 60

Yes, I think about portion size… and No, I don’t do much about it. Scale would be great!

  61. 61

I just eyeball portion sizes and don’t really obsess about it. I mainly try to just eat slowly and enjoy each bite which seems to help. The scale would be helpful tho for my hubby…he has cut back some too, but I don’t think realizes what real portion sizes are.

  62. 62

We’d love to win – we are engineers over here and we love data.

  63. 63

I’m way bad with portion size, this neat-o scale would really help me!

    • 64
      Anotherlisa says:

Have a digital scale for baking, where precise matters. Would love to have all the info your gadget provides, including portion size data. Thanks for the giveaway!

  64. 65

This is something I could use. I am about to start back on WW or something. When I used WW before, my scale was my friend. I used it religiously. Totally out of the habit now.

  65. 66

I go strictly by calories, but would like to change that and this scale would definitely help.

  66. 67

I am ALWAYS thinking about portion size control, but ALAS…I do not always act on those thoughts!

  67. 68

I am horrible at portion control. I usually just “eyeball” it, but must admit that my eyeballs are usually VERY hungry! Could use some help form a calculator…

  68. 69

I usually eat a very small portion about every two hours, its keeps the blood sugar level throughout the day which helps with weight loss or weight maintenance. I have measuring cups that have oz on it so I use that alot and keep my portions to about 4 oz. Once you start you aren’t hungry and then overeat. I also mix my carbs and proteins together that also keeps me from getting hungry, for instance I will have 1 piece of whole grain toast with organic peanut butter on it. Or a small bowl of steamed brown rice with some milk. I also have small portions of veggies cut up and in the fridge so all I have to do is grab and go. I don’t eat a lot of fruits, too much natural sugar and makes your blood sugar spike. I do have a glass of “Amazing Grass” every day, it has all the friut and veggie supplements I need.

  69. 70

Oh and I almost forgot. I start the day off with a glass of lemon water. It starts the metabolism and sets it for the day. I have lemon water throughout the day.

  70. 71

I don’t really pay attention to portion size but this scale looks very cool!

  71. 72

i have used my fitness pal for about 11 months and I bought a dinky $7 scale that I use, but I always wonder how accurate it is. I recorded everything I ate to the exact portion size. I have lost 35 lbs so I guess something is working!

  72. 73
    Kim Johnson says:

I have started thinking about it at every meal for the last 4 weeks. I have started a healthy living challenge through the company I work for and have been shocked at what I consider a serving and what it actually is once I measure it. I thought a bag of microwave popcorn was about 4 cups by eyeballing it. After measuring it I was shocked to learn there are 11 cups of popcorn in a bag. Taught me a lesson about my rose-colored glasses! I would love this scale to help me on my new journey! I have already lost 10 lbs!!

    Kim

  73. 74

I love things that make life easy peasy! i don’t usually stress over portion sizes; however, the scale would most definitely make me more aware.

    Thanks for sharing!! :-)

  74. 75

I don’t pay nearly enough attention to portions. It’s definitly my down fall. I’ve been trying to track calories but its tough when you aren’t really sure how much/many portions were consumed. Would love to win this food scale.!!

  75. 76

I both measure and obsess:) And this looks like a wonderful tool to continue that;)

  76. 77

I just eye ball it, unless it is food that I love than I kind of forget to portion it out! (oops :) This scale looks awesome and easy!

  77. 78

I think about it… I really do. But I truly have not a clue what 4 oz. of turkey looks like compared to 2 oz. of pasta. It is hard to track calories when I am just guessing my serving size. Oops :)

  78. 79

This sounds like a great product. I think trying to determine portion size has been so difficult so having something like this would be great.

  79. 80

Would love the scale! I am sure that portion size is my biggest problem.

  80. 81

I usually eyeball it. But I am trying to quit eating before I think I’m full. :)

  81. 82

I lost 115 pounds in a year and a half just by cutting my portions (plus exercise). I still have 20 more to go. What a useful tool this is.

  82. 83

Oooh I would LOVE this. It would make this Weight Watchers crap so much “easier!!”

  83. 84

I’m clueless about portion sizes. This would be a huge help.

  84. 85

Nothing enters my mouth without me thinking about it. It’s a daily thing. robrent@bellsouth.net

  85. 86

I think about portions most of the time. I use measuring cups, but a food scale would be helpful.

  86. 87

I consider what kinds of foods I eat, but not really the portion size. This would be SO helpful!

  87. 88

I do not measure or obsess about portion size, but I know it’s an important thing to know in order to lose and/or maintain a healthy weight. I would love this scale- although it would probably be a huge shock about how much I am actually eating!!!

  88. 89

I try and pay attention to portion sizes but generally eyeball it when I am cooking. I do set aside preportioned containers of bulk items I buy in order to control the portion sizes of those when I do have them. Other than that I could probably use a food scale to help keep better track :)

  89. 90

I am pretty conscious of serving sizes, but the only thing I still weigh is pasta. That’s before I cook it, but then I eyeball it to divide it into portions. Most everything else, I weiged or measured it and now rely on memory to gauge the serving size. Probably not the most reliable way to do it, huh?

  90. 91

I’m not very conscious of serving sizes at all, so I could use some help!

  91. 92

This just might be the ticket for easier healthier living! I would love this. PLUS- I could totally prove to my husband that eating the entire bowl of Velvetta and Rotel is actually over 150 calories!

  92. 93

I don’t measure my food….but I should! I usually just try to guess what things weigh. It would be great to actually know for sure.

  93. 94

I would love that so much. Though I did find an AWESOME iphone app called “Lose it”. It’s free and all you do is scan the UPC code on whatever food item you are eating and it brings up all the information from it. It even has restaurants and store specific options. Try it, you will be addicted!

  94. 95

We are trying to eat healthier at my house and this scale would help a lot! We usually use the eyeballing method, but it doesn’t work out so well.

  95. 96

    Here’s my tweet– https://twitter.com/#!/HannahLee1022

    THANKS MEL!

  96. 97

I probably need one of these. I actually am a mathematician, but not a food one – ha! (I have a degree in math) I hope I win :)

  97. 98

I usually try to think of portion size compared to the palm of my hand. I try to use a small plate during dinner while the rest of the family uses a dinner plate. I will admit that if it’s Girl Scout cookie time I have been know to eat half a box of Carmel Delights in one sitting. Just being honest.

  98. 99

I don’t measure my portions but I am aware of how much is in a serving. I never eat anything out of a bag (for example chips, popcorn). I always put them in a small bowl.

  99. 100

As the reluctant conductor of the healthy train in our household, I OBSESS about portion size. That scale is a flipping genius, in my opinion. My current scale is the palm of my hand, which I read somewhere is akin to the size of a 3 ounce portion. Frankly though…really? What if I have small hands…or abnormally large hands? Who comes up with this advice? In whatever case, the palm of my hand presents a very sorry looking portion of chicken breast:(

  100. 101

I absolutely obsess about portion sizes!

  101. 102

Just this week I made a commitment to keep my daily caloric intake at 1,700 or less.

Because I feel it would be kind of nice to only have one hiney.

So to answer your question, I suppose yes, I guess I sort of am obsessing about portions and servings and whatnot. But I have this cool app on my phone called “BigFatSecret” in which I can scan barcodes or do searches and it will tell me the nutrional value of whatever I’m shoving in my gullet.

But it still wants to know how much my meat portions weigh. How should I know? So I’ve been kind of using the “rule of palm” for that but it would be awesome to have this scale. Sorry for the super long comment.

  102. 103

I’m going to join WW at their next meeting (next Monday) and this would really be helpful.

  103. 104

I’m sorry. I can’t get past the sheer joy that you said “unagi.”

I’m awful with portions. A portion of cereal is however much I can fit in my bowl. Except that’s really 2 or 3 portions. Which can be a calorie expensive way to start the day. And then at dinner my portion is…oh…say…about *this* much… Only, what the heck? Did I just give my 5’2″ self the same portion as my 6’3″ husband?? That can’t be right…

Suffice to say, I could use a handy dandy scale.

  104. 105

The bathroom scales say I need a food scale……sigh. I find it very difficult to know if what I think is a portion is accurate!

  105. 106

Here’s my Tweet: https://twitter.com/#!/ErinAtLast Great idea!

  106. 107

I have no idea what anything weighs. I hung a mirror on my living room wall with hardware designed to hold 70 pounds. My husband said it was overkill since it only weighed about 12. I said, “No way! That sucker is heavy!” So we took it to the bathroom and weighed it – 12.8 lbs. A scale for food might be just what we need!

  107. 108

Hope this counts as a valid second entry… I would love this scale as a way to eat healthier, not just for weight loss. It would be darn funny to carry this in my purse and whip it out at restaurants too!

  108. 109

My brother just got one of these and I want one! I have always used the fist size portioning theory, and telling my teenage son to leave something for the rest of us.

  109. 110

I’m on a diet that allows (!!!) me to have 4oz of lean protein at lunch and at dinner. They say that 4oz is the size of “your” palm or a deck of cards. What if my chicken is sliced and not in a deck-of-cards shape? What if my palm is smaller/larger than yours?? It is so hard, and I feel like I’m cheating on my diet even though it is completely unintentional. :)

  110. 111

I “think” about portion size but do I really practice it???? Probably not. I need help!

  111. 112
    Auntie Jaime says:

I don’t obsess over the portion size; however, I do keep a food journal & try to be accurate, so I know my caloric intake. This looks like it might make me even more accurate!
My goal is to eat healthier & go to the gym on a more regular & consistent basis. So far, so good!

  112. 113
    Dianna Bea says:

I used to weigh everything I put in my mouth when I was on Weight Watchers years ago… then I had kids & it made life a little more challenging. It would be great to be able to do it again & be more in control of my food portions and get myself back on track!

  113. 114

Recently started trying to portion. Needless to say, my 4 ounces is not their 4 ounces.

  114. 115

Yes, I try to be reasonable with portion control. I learned on Jenny Craig about volumnizing with veggies and having small portions of the meat or carbs. I think about it a lot, but this tool would be so awesome.

  115. 116

I live in New Orleans so portion size is out of control!

  116. 117

My husband I used to weigh and measure everything with an old fashioned scale but that involved doing math in my head to figure out how many oz’s were equal to grams, were equal to a 1/4 cup, etc. and so on and well, math (particularly fractions) have never been my strong suit :) This would be fab-u-lous!

  117. 118

I love this! I currently use My Fitness Pal app to track my intake, but this would be so precise! Thanks!!

  118. 119

Anytime you make something electronic it automatically seems more doable. :) I’d love to give it a try.

  119. 120
    Ellen Roth says:

I love any new invention that would help us keep track of how much we eat. It’s very enlightening, when here in the US our portion sizes keep getting bigger and bigger. Would love this scale!

    Tracy Marlow says:

My 7 y/o daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on January 3 so I’m obssessed with portion sizes and carb counts. This would be fantastic to have!

  121. 122

Oh, this would be so handy! I mostly just eyeball things. “Eh, that looks like an ounce of cheese.” *chomp*

  122. 123

How helpful this would be! I’m afraid it would tell me that an entire bag of Goldfish is not just one serving!

  123. 124

I think about portion size, but then don’t practice it at all!! That is why I am carrying around this extra 15lbs. It would be great to have this so I can train myself in what a portion really is!!

  124. 125

I started trying to live a healtier lifestyle this year as well. I measure & weigh every thing I eat. I’d love to have a new scale!

  125. 126

I don’t think about portion size as much as I probably should – especially when it comes to (gasp) prepackaged foods! And the hormone-filled, gigantic chicken breasts they sell at the grocery store.

  126. 127

I don’t really worry much about my portions, but I do stop eating when I am full.

  127. 128

I try to think about portion sizes only some of the time. Wish I would do better more often. I know my portions are more about what I want and not what I need to eat.

  128. 129

I have Type 1 Diabetes, so I’ve been obsessively thinking about portion sizes for most of my life and have a pretty good internal calculator to eyeball them after all that practice. This sounds like a lifesaver, especially when trying new recipes and foods. Would love to have it for my kitchen!

  129. 130

Not obsessive, but do consider portion sizes with each meal.
Would love this to use w/our 15-year old! She is amazed how small portions are when she has to count or measure out one serving of something.
    Thank you.

  130. 131

I am pregnant with my second child. As far as thinking about portions, I don’t. I just eat! I will definitely need this during the summer to help me shed some baby weight!

  131. 132

I try to control portion size but really struggle with it. This would be a lifesaver!

  132. 133

I used to THINK I controlled my portion size, but lately, my portions have just gradually gotten larger and larger (along with my waist!) So, I would LOVE to win this scale!

  133. 134

I need to give more thought to portion size. I just weaned my last baby. I remember after #2, I had to relearn portions sizes after being pregnant/nursing. Then, a few years later, I had 3 & 4 back to back and I know its all messed up again (my view of what’s a proper size and retraining my stomach, etc.) so this would be a big help!

  134. 135

wow i can’t believe something like this is real! that would be awesome for me as i try to lose the last of this baby weight since i think everything is healthy until i’m surprised after reading the nutrition information.

  135. 136

Well, unfortunately, I just “eyeball” it and guess!

  136. 137

I try to think about portion sizes but this would be so helpful!

  137. 138
    Meredith W in TX says:

I’m trying to watch my portion size now, so this would be awesome! Although I love calling an entire sleeve of cookies a portion size!! :-)

  138. 139

On a bad day I obsess over calories on a good day I eat a sleeve of cookies. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Whatever.

  139. 140

Although I love the look of my vintage scale, I am thinking this one might be a bit more accurate. Would love to win it!

  140. 141

I never did until I downloaded the app for “My Fitness Pal” that you told us about earlier. I am very proud to say that today is my 16th day of keeping track of my calories (i’ve only went over my limit once) and I’ve lost 8 lbs!!! This Perfect Portion Scale would be so awesome to go along with it. I could stop guessing!!

  141. 142

I try to keep track of portion sizes, but I don’t usually measure. I probably should – I’m sure I would be shocked at the results!

  142. 143

All I do is “eyeball” the amount so I’m sure I’m WAY off!

  143. 144

I’m currently due ANY DAY with our first child, but I am DETERMINED to get the baby weight off as soon as possible (plus a little more, even!) so this would be VERY helpful since I won’t be going to the doctor every week for a check up on the weight gain/loss!

  144. 145

Generally don’t think to much about portions…hence the extra 50 pounds I’m carrying around. Committing to get this weight off this year.

  145. 146

I think about portion sizes…and then think up excuses to ignore the fact that I’m eating too much. This scale would be a great tool to have, now that I’m finally out of excuses. (Wow…that sentence really just kicked me between the eyes. “I’m finally out of excuses.”. Time for a good cry and a healthy, properly portioned lunch.)

  146. 147

I do measure, but mostly by eye-ballin’ something…

  147. 148

Overthe past year I’ve come to spend more time on portion size and tracking what foods I eat. It takes more time, but I’ve seen definite changes in what/how much I eat. I’d love to win this calc/scale! :)

  148. 149

I am currently doing Weight Watchers (for the 2nd or maybe 3rd time!) and I am always looking at serving size. Now when I’m not trying to loose weight I don’t pay any attention to serving size. A food scale is something I’ve been wanting because measuring a piece of chicken with the palm of my hand is getting old. :)

  149. 150

i TOTALLY obsess and cut corners. I’ll not eat the last bite or two of my sandwich if there is only bread left, then eat extra of something else since i was “saving calories” by not eating that bread…. fail.

  150. 151
    Blessed Mom says:

I don’t think about it as much as I should, or I think about it afte I’ve eaten too much. I would love to have this scale.

  151. 152

Love it. Trying to eat healthier as my lunch is a handful of chex mix between classes…. oh well

  152. 153

I have been watching portion size for about the last year and have done pretty well with it. I have gotten off track since the holidays and need to get back at it!

  153. 154

Oh how I NEED this! Let me count the ways…..

  154. 155

I think if I won this, I would sell it on ebay. Why make myself cry knowing how little food I should actually be eating?? But seriously, I don’t think too much about the portion size; my plate’s not overflowing, and I stop eating when I start to feel full. Hopefully that’s enough!

  155. 156

I do not spend much time on portion control at present. However, my dr has told me that I need to do so and to lose a bagillion pounds. So having one of these new fangled items would really help me. And my fabulous hubby who cooks most of our food!

  156. 157

I actually do think about this all the time. I am trying to watch what I eat and keep track of the calories while doing so, but, sadly, I end up guesstimating when it comes to ounces and portion size. This would be great!!

  157. 158
    heather b says:

Figuring out the serving size is the hardest part for me & I usual guess-timate. ( It really hasn’t worked too well.) This tool looks pretty easy to use & would be quite handy. Thanks

  158. 159

I do think about eating healthy but I don’t think enough about portion. When I used to think about portions…surprise surprise, I lost weight. There must be some sort of link… Anyway, I’ve gotten away from thinking about portions and I think that scale would be great to put me back on track!

  159. 160

Im pretty clueless on portion sizes, but I would really like to learn proper portioning.

  160. 161

    Big Mamma,

If you whip that scale out in public (let’s say at Paloma Blanco or Order Up) to weigh your food, I will either burst out laughing or just pretend I do not know you. Total toss up.

  161. 162

I’ve been using the livestrong app to record calories but I totally agree its hard to be accurate about portion sizes…this scale would solve that problem :)

  162. 163

I obsess about not obsessing about my portions. How sad. Anyway, sometimes I eyeball it, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don’t. I digress. I would love to have this scale. How cool!

  163. 164
    Lori Dees says:

I try to think about portion size but truthfully have no idea how big 3-4 oz is…..I would LOVE to have a scale to tell me exactly how big my portion is…..

    Pick me…Pick me…Pick me….

  164. 165

I can totally eyeball a serving of say broccoli or carrots. I’m afraid when it comes to Girl Scout cookies, chips, chocolate or really anything I WANT to eat my serving size radar is a bit off. I would love a scale like this.

  165. 166

I would love a scale!! I obssess! A lot! Thanks for the offer!

  166. 167

    Hi Boo Mama!

Well, I kinda “know” what portions are supposed to be, but it’s so easy to eyeball it…in my favor of course! This little gadget would sure hold me acountable.

  167. 168
    Mary Ellen says:

I am counting weight watchers points, but it is hard to know about the meat, etc. just like you said. I would love to have a scale like this to help me out! love your blog, btw!

    Amanda D. says:

Ever since the new year, I’ve been trying to keep track of my calories and portion sizes, but you’re right, it can be difficult! This scale would make it so much easier!

  169. 170

I don’t pay nearly enough attention to what I eat. I really need a scale like this, it would make me pay much more attention.

  170. 171

    Ashley Anderson says:

I NEVER used to worry about portion size but like you, I am changing my ways in 2012. I have done pretty good so far but this tool would me it even easier!

  172. 173

While I don’t over do it, I also don’t pay as much attention to portion sizes as I should. This scale would be great!!!

  173. 174
    Deana Lewis says:

I am trying to do better at figuring serving sizes when it is given in ozs. I bought a $9 scale at a large chain discount store……….I’m sure that this fancy one would be much more accurate! Hope I win!

    elizabeth says:

try to use portion control most of the time but don’t obsess about it. thought of you today when a student was wearing Texas A & M hoodie :-)

  175. 176

i try to worry about portions sizes, i really, really do. but then i forget to remember! :)

  176. 177

That thing would definitely help with portions!! I am not good at portioning. My best trick is to simply try not to take seconds. This does not work if chips and cheese dip are involved.

  177. 178

the portion control tool would be awesome. My DH could really benefit from the sugar content tool.

  178. 179

i have thought about getting my food weighed but never got around to doing it… its a lot of working trying to figure out the calories etc. this looks like just the ticket :)

  179. 180

Well, I love food. And today I started the HCG diet, a food lovers nightmare in hopes to never see what I saw in the mirror yesterday ever again! Ever.
Usually I eat well balanced meals, it’s the dang 5 kids and the “baby weight” (6 3/4 years old) that hasn’t left town yet. So, here’s to starvation!

  180. 181

I really don’t give much thought to portion size although I KNOW that I really should. I am diabetic and I am not good at watching what I eat. BUT today I made my quarterly visit to my endocrinologist and I had lost 10 pounds! It has inspired me to lose more (I need to lose at least 45-50 more) so I am going to really concentrate on doing a better job at eating healthy. Reading your daily post is helping me be inspired – Thanks!

  181. 182

I think about it enough to feel guilty about the portion that I am actually choosing to eat!

  182. 183

I definitely need to learn portions for the foods that I eat!

  183. 184

Well, I think about my portion sizes, never have weighed them though!!!

  184. 185

Yep, I could definitely use this to enhance my Weight Watchers adventure.

  185. 186

I’d totally love thIs! currently tracking calories and being active… I turned 35, have had 7 babies, burried my three year old 5 years ago and gained 70#, just diagnosed w pre-diabetes, lst 52 pounds in last 11 months, have 30-40 to go, ad feeling frustrated w health & Fittness lately! But so much to be grateful for…

  186. 187

This would make portion control so much easier to succeed in.

  187. 188
    Michelle Badji says:

I was using a cheapie plastic scale until the red arrow that points to the ounces broke off. I gained 10 pounds after that. Eyeballing portion sizes doesn’t work for me since my eyeballs are big when it comes to food.

  188. 189

I do just eyeball my portion size, but mostly I try to notice when I’m done with the tasting and just into the shoveling it in….

  189. 190

I NEED that thing. I put a lot of thought into portions. I measure stuff (cups and spoonfuls). Unless I’m busy. Then I use crazy rules of thumb (a portion of meat is the size of a deck of cards). Except that I lie to myself. A person would have to need the super-jumbo print cards to justify the steak I had last night.

  190. 191

I have counted calories for weight loss and it is so hard to do. Using a scale like this would make things much easier. Measuring amounts and adding calories takes so much time that I tend to try to estimate and that is not very accurate.

  191. 192

    I definitely need this!

  192. 193
    Carrie Jake says:

    I really need this… =)

  193. 194

I don’t measure, but I’ve started to think about this stuff a lot more, especially sugar content. This scale would be a great help.

  194. 195

We bought a food scale last month and while I was opening the box, the scale slid out of the packaged and landed with a crunch on the kitchen floor. My husband and I looked at each other and at the exact same time said, “It must be a sign.” We returned it to the store and haven’t looked back!

I’m totally kidding about the not looking back part. We’ve actually been looking at food scales ever since, but the trauma is still too fresh in our memories. That 15 seconds we spent with our last scale left a void in our hearts that we know no other scale could fill.

We would, however, be willing to give your scale a place in our home, and perhaps in time we could learn to love it, too. :-)

  195. 196

I’m quite sure I wouldn’t like what this scale had to tell me about my portions! However, I still wish to win–what’s up with that??? :)

  196. 197
    Melissa S says:

I count serving size when it is a quantitiy like 7 chips = 1 serving. When it is oz. I guess – I am SURE I have never guessed high!

  197. 198

    Would love this!

  198. 199

I’ve started the Weight Watcher’s program and I totally agree that knowing what a serving is is hard. Especially when they say 1 TBSP. REALLY? How is that a serving of salad dressing? Who are you kidding??? I bought a little shot glass type thing that has break downs of oz, TBSP, TSP, and ml. Even using this makes it hard to measure out meat.
Anyway, this would be extremely helpful.

  199. 200

I joined Weight Watchers this month.

    I weigh. I measure. I journal everything I eat. I lost 9 lbs.

    Yeah me.

  200. 201

My boyfriend is a full member and I’m a dabbler in weight watchers so this would be positively amazing to have!

  201. 202

I have tried multiple times to memorize the examples weight watchers gives you like a portion of chicken should be size of a deck of cards. But that is the only one I can ever remember!

  202. 203

I would love to join weight watchers but for now I’m going it alone.

  203. 204

I do think about portion sizes – but am never sure i know what the right size is – this scale would be such a great help!

  204. 205

I try to measure, but a scale would be great for things like meat & casseroles, etc.

  205. 206

Food scales are helpful but this one looks really fab!

  206. 207

I think it about it all day! I keep track of what I eat, but have the same problem as you….how do you know the size?? I usually just guesstimate. I would love this scale!

  207. 208

I am really bad about portion control because i have no idea what 3 oz of anything looks like. This scale would be very cool.

  208. 209
    Heather M says:

I obsess, trak my calories and workout everyday, I feel I need to work out in order to earn the right to eat, this scale would come in really handy

  209. 210

I have a food scale that I use fairly often. I would love to have a scale that also tells nutritional content!

  210. 211

I actually think about portion size when I eat. When dining out, my husband and I often split an entree to assure that our portions aren’t too large.

  211. 212

This would really give me the umph I need to get motivated. What is it, almost February? I really need a jump start!

  212. 213

Oops, I submitted before I was finished answering…right now, I do not obsess. I just try and eat the right amount, but when I get going with paying attention, I use the methods like a meat portion the size of your palm, etc.thanks for the giveaway!

  213. 214

I don’t measure, but I do think about it. :-)

  214. 215

I really need help with portion control. That’s my biggest challenge when it comes to weight loss! I really hope I win! That scale looks awesome!!

  215. 216

Yeah, I count all my calories, but I would LOVE to have a scale for exact measurements! I estimate right now and I’m sure I’m waaay off :)

  216. 217
  217. 218

I need to weigh my food that could help…I just guess and I am sure I am not doing a very good job with that :)

  218. 219

i’m obsessive right now- i count out individual goldfish and crackers and measure everything! this scale would be SO handy!

  219. 220

I have a very old school food scale–this would be awesome to have!

  220. 221
  221. 222

This would be AWESOME! I really need to work on my portions!

  222. 223
    Karen Orr says:

I would love this scale! I am very interested in portions and calories since finding and using my Lose It! app on my phone. I have to enter my food each day and the amounts that I’ve eaten and sometimes I just don’t know how much I’m actually eating. This would be great! I hope I win!

  223. 224
    Lindsay L. says:

I would love to have that food scale. I need to lose a lot of weight. I haven’t put much thought into portions in the past but now that I’m changing my eating habits I find it is hard to measure 4oz of turkey.

  224. 225

Portion size = container size, doesn’t it? So much easier than measuring. Of course, I suppose that’s how I got this way, so perphaps the nutritionists have a (wee) point.*sigh* Would love to use this tool to get back on track and regain the body I had when I was 30…more the worse for extended wear, unforunately!

  225. 226

I don’t put that much thought into to it, but I try to eat a lot of fruit and not too much chips and snack foods.

  226. 227

I am finally (for past 3 weeks) paying attention to portion size and actually losing weight. Imagine. It is difficult to figure out exactly… this scale looks like an awesome tool!

  227. 228

Now living with my boyfriend, it would be extremely helpful to see just how much I’ve upped my food portions when cooking for us both. Definitely think I need the help to curb the 2nd helpings!

  228. 229

I do really try to pay attention to portion size. But then I get so frustrated because I end up eating pre-packaged foods instead of fresh stuff because it’s easier to just know the portion for sure – and I hate that. But who knows what 5 oz of banana looks like?? Well, people with this scale I suppose! :)

  229. 230

I kinda guess at portion sizes. Then I know I should totally cut that portion size in half. Because I have the “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” disease.

  230. 231
  231. 232

umm I’m pregnant? so I keep telling my toddler and the new baby inside me that after this pregnancy we are gonna be sooo healthy.. uhh that scale would definitely help that out!

  232. 233

    I definitely think about portion size…and then I eat what I want…oops!

  233. 234

Better late than never entering right!?

  234. 235

I do watch portion size, and I actually measure a few things. I also try to eat 1/2 of every meal as fresh fruit or uncooked veggies.

  235. 236

I don’t obsess over portion control but I have definitely downsized the portions that I put on my plate. This would be so awesome to win! It would certainly take the guesswork out of what I am putting in my mouth!

  236. 237

I think about portion size a little bit. If I have the packaging in front of me, I might glance at the serving size and try to match it. However, when you have a box of Ritz crackers in front of you and a serving size is five crackers, it’s easier to just ignore that and eat what you think a portion size should be. I’m not very good at measuring portion sizes from a family style dinner, though, so this scale would be awesome to have!

  237. 238

Portion control is a constant challenge. I’ve been trying to watch do better, but sometimes I’m sure they’ve got to be kidding with the “servings per package”. :)

  238. 239

I’ve been measuring, obsessing, weighing, reweighing, reobsessing and remeasuring. I’ve lost a total of 1.7 lbs so far. Ugh.

  239. 240

I have started to pay more attention to the type of food I’m eating – contents, ingredients, fat/cal/sodium. I am not paying nearly enough attention to portion size of those better ingredients. I recently learned that a serving size of regular Cheerios is nowhere near the “single portion” i was pouring daily for breakfast. (Eating for two – without the +1 to warrant it!)

  240. 241

Lately I’ve been obsessing much over portion sizes and calories, etc. I use an app to input everything I eat–which makes it really easy. BUT, I don’t have a kitchen scale and I’ve been wanting one.
