Fashion Friday: Edition I’m so glad it’s Spring Break

You know what dawned on me as I worked on Fashion Friday this week?

I haven’t written a post about trends for Spring and Summer. And so I thought about doing that this week but then decided I didn’t have that kind of time. Gulley and I are hitting the road with the kids tomorrow and I have to finish doing laundry and pack and take enough nerve pills to survive the trip.

But I will tell you that one day this week I wore skinny jeans with a navy and white striped shirt and silver flip-flops. I was a little self-concious all day because I always worry that the skinny jean combined with a shoe that’s not a boot can create an optical illusion in which the wearer resembles an ice cream cone.

I’m trying to move past this. But I think it’s rooted in the fact that I last wore skinny jeans with flats when I was twelve years old and had no hips to speak of.

Anyway, I was finally feeling a little more secure about the whole thing when P got home from work, looked at me and asked if I had a little white cap to go with my sailor outfit.

Some people just don’t understand the trends. Nautical. It’s a trend.

Here are a few cute things I’ve found this week.

1. fold over jersey skirt

It was love at first sight when I saw this skirt at Old Navy. And then it even looked cute on. So I bought it.

I’m still not entirely sure what I’m going to wear it with. Maybe a white t-shirt and denim jacket. Or maybe a bright orange or yellow tank. Or maybe even emerald green. I’m not sure. I need to play around with different options.

2. elegant errands top

This is such a great top. Perfect with shorts or white jeans during the summer. Or you could wear it under a jacket while the weather is still cool.

3. athena sandals

Such cute sandals. And they come in an array of colors.

4. chambray shirt

Even though I never dreamed I’d be back to shopping for anything chambray at this stage in my life, I would really like to find a cute chambray shirt. It’s the perfect thing to wear with all those colored jeans that I don’t own yet but am planning to buy at some point.

5. linda tunic

This would be so cute with white skinny jeans and turquoise accessories.

6. big buddha katy tote

This purse is great. And it comes in so many bright colors.

7. sandra straw fedora

I don’t know that I can pull off a fedora. Much less, a straw fedora. But I’m tempted to try it.

8. tea party clutch

I’ve seen a lot of cute summery clutch purses recently. I really like this one.

9. turquoise and gold scale earrings

I ran in World Market the other day to look for a lamp and to check out their Easter decorations. But then I heard the accessories calling to me. And so I answered. And found these darling turquoise earrings that I will love forever.

10. manngo woven sandal

There are so many cute wedge sandals out that I can hardly stand it. I don’t know how I’d ever choose which ones I like the best, but these are a definite contender.

That’s it for today.

Anchors aweigh, my friends.

And have a great Friday.

Awesome! I have to go shopping tomorrow and find something to wear to this dinner thing I have to go to on Saturday night. Unfortunately bright colors are out, because my hubby has to wear his professional Boy Scout dress uniform which is dark, so ugh, no cute spring fashions for me. Just practical and hopefully cute. I don’t know how I’m going to pull this off.

Hey, I found a dress with black and white diagonal stripes! Kind of like the skirt you showed above but a dress, not just a skirt! My daughter thinks her dad will not like it, but we’ll see what he says when he gets home.

What if you still have your chambray shirt from the 90s? Does that count?

I was at the mall today with my daughter and I saw the stuff she was picking out and I was like, “Why did I throw out my old clothes?! This would be so much cheaper if I’d kept them!!!!” Cause I kid you not the styles she was choosing looked exactly like what I wore when I was her age!!!

I’m so excited that I own something in your Fashion Friday post! I bought that Old Navy skirt and am still debating what to wear with it. I did wear it at Disney World with a white shirt and denim jacket (I must be learning something from you!) and some red Toms (probably not the best choice but at Disney your feet must be comfy! Thanks to Fashion Friday I feel like I take “pocket Melanie” shopping with me now (you know, like Flat Stanley but cuter), because whenever I’m in a store I think to myself, “Mel would wear that with some turquoise,” or I feel like asking, “pocket Melanie, what do you think of that?”

    I LOVE Big Buddha purses!

Thanks for reminding me that I still need to TRY to look cute even though I am blowing up bigger than a whale! At LEAST I can get some cute wedges. I mean, the baby is due in June, so even if I don’t feel like wearing them at the end of my pregnancy, there will be a couple of months afterward that I will be SO ready to be cute!!!!

I am loving and embracing the nautical trend. I put up a blog post today of cute stuff I found on Polyvore. If loving nautical is wrong then I don’t want to be right. Anchors away I say!

Love the skirt and the wedges. My poor knees can’t take heels anymore though. Even wedges kill them. I’m sure the outfit you wore looked great. It sounded very cute.
Hope you have a great weekend!

After a not so winter-winter in Indiana….I’m looking forward to leaves on the trees and cute new clothes of spring!

    Love the earrings!

Love that Old Navy skirt! Looks super comfy. I did something I don’t normally do, I wrote about fashion and aging gracefully. I’d love your comments or insights if you get a minute. Thanks and happy weekend!

Here’s hoping there’s no stomach viruses or puking on your trip!!! Can’t wait to hear all about it…the road trip posts are the best!! Have a great one!!

  11. 14

I cannot wait to read about your road trip! I love your posts after you and Gully take the three kids on trips. Brings back sweet memories of travels with my four when they were young. Cherish these times. One of the things I miss most now that they are in their 20′s is our fun road trips! My husband used to say I liked to fly by the seat of my pants. But the fun part of travel with the kids when my husband was at work was being unstructured. Such a fun break from the school/activity rush. Enjoy and make some fun memories!!

  12. 15

I love the nautical trend. If only I could wear it while on the beach.

  13. 16

I love the earrings, although I would never wear them. I am weird like that, irritates my husband to no end. Work shirts? Always! Love the wedges too!

  14. 17

You often mention white jeans, and I can totally see how the tunics and other tops would look really cute with white jeans. However, I have three children and the youngest is 7 months old. There’s no way I’m buying or wearing white jeans for the next 4 years. Any other suggestions that might be more stain-repellent or stain-concealing? :) Yesterday I went to a school open house with pureed carrots decorating one leg of my (dark blue) jeans … I didn’t notice until I walked in the school. Sigh …

I love your Fashion Friday posts. And I just saw the perfect chambray tunic top – on sale from Shade. I may have to order it. Here’s the link – http://www.shadeclothing.com/shop/dept_item.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524445995506&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306256130&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395917465&bmUID=1331437397654&productSizeSelected=0&fit_type= And would you believe that it really IS only $15? Ha ha. :)

Totally ordered that Old Navy skirt a little while back and can’t wait for my mom to bring it to me tomorrow (I live in the UK). This was part of the reason I emailed you about white denim jacket vs. regular denim. I went with the regular – can’t wait to pair it with a white t and the skirt. I’m having my baby on Friday, so I’m hoping this will be a comfy but cute post pregnancy outfit though I am nervous about the white t covering up my post baby bump (eww, wish that went away at the birth!).

So glad I read this post last Friday. I was heading to Old Navy that afternoon and snapped up the blue/white chevron skirt for myself. It is super comfy! I’m going to wear it with a red top, or a green top, or a pink top or whatever!!! I think I will be wearing it a LOT!!!
