Well, the good news is my car is legal again. I took it back to the service station around noon yesterday and the whole thing only took about five minutes. Which made me feel a little stupid about putting it off for so long. And for about three seconds I felt inspired to do a few other things I’ve been procrastinating on, but that feeling pretty much passed as soon as I drove out of the parking lot.
There are a couple or six things I wanted to share with y’all.
1. I’m almost out of mascara. Which means I’m in the market for a great mascara that will perform eyelash miracles. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
2. My wonderful and extremely patient agent, Bill Jensen, posted this link on his Facebook page. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to write a book this pretty much sums it up. I laughed until I cried.
3. Speaking of books, several of y’all (at least two) have asked about my book, Sparkly Green Earrings. It’s all finished. Cover art and everything. And it’s coming out the first week of February.
I’ll be here alternating between excitement and wanting to curl up in the fetal position if you need me.
4. If you haven’t watched this Feel Inside (And Stuff) video by Flight of The Conchords then your life isn’t as good as it could be.
5. I kind of fell off the fitness wagon this summer and have got to get back on. But I can’t run everyday because I hate running. And I can’t face doing The Shred because it makes me so dang angry. Not to mention that I can’t even get off the toilet seat for the first five days after I do it.
So I ordered Body by Bethenny. I’ll let you know how it goes. I hear those exercise DVDs can really work if you actually put them in your DVR an use them.
6. I wrote a post about football movies on Ree’s blog. You can read it here.
I’m slightly depressed about the whole thing now that the Aggies season opener has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Isaac but I guess that makes sense because, you know, it’s a hurricane. Stay safe if you’re on the Gulf Coast.
And that’s it for today. I know it’s brief but back to school is kind of kicking my rear end this week. I mean, did you not read the part about how I had to get my car inspected? It was exhausting.
Y’all have a great day.

Dior Show is a great mascara!
Dior Show has been my favorite FOREVER!—until I tried Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara. Oh My Word, it is unbelievable. Now I keep both on hand, just because.
(oh, and Melanie, its only, uhhh, $15)
Where do you find it for $15. I just googled because I also need some and it’s $24.
Maybelline Great Lash is the absolute, hands down BEST and CHEAPEST! http://www.maybelline.com/Products/Eye-Makeup/Mascara/Great-Lash-Washable-Mascara.aspx
You will love, love, love the Body by Bethenny workout! I do it almost daily. Great workout and a bonus is it gives you tons and tons of energy. I do it before I go for a run and it gives me lots of endurance.
I like L’Oreal Voluminous. But whatever you choose, be sure to give it about a week. I don’t know why, but mascara always works better after you work a little air into it, or whatever it is that happens over time, in my opinion.
Thanks for asking about mascara. I never wear it, my hand always end up on my face, and it smears up all over making me look like I’m hungover. Well, I am getting old. I turned 39 recently and am rethinking strategy here. Like, bangs might hide wrinkles, better facial cream, and maybe mascara would do some good. Oh, and lose 20 lbs. But, I never really seem to embrace that last one enough to do something like The Shred. No, me and pain are not friends. Anyway, thanks!
Definicils by Lancome is the only way. I have tried everything and it is truly the best. Drugstore mascaras simply do not compare. It is the only mascara I’ve ever used where I’ve had people (women of course) notice my eyelashes and comment on them, asking what I use. And I do not have magically long eyelashes naturally – it’s definitely the mascara. Just my thoughts!
Benefit “They’re Real” mascara is fabulous. It’s $23 at Ulta or Sephora and worth every penny!
Agree 100%! Ree recommended it on her website and I decided to give it a try! I still use Maybelline Great Lash (the one with the pink tube and green cap) when I’m just going to run quick errands and need to look alive. But for the important stuff, “They’re Real!” is ah-mazing!!
YES. And someone commented on how my eyelashes were long when I didn’t have mascara on. Asians DO NOT get such compliments. So maybe the mascara really does help lashes grow.
You need to try Jazzercise!! It’s a great workout that includes both cardio and strenght training! You’ll meet a great group of students and instructors that will keep you moving and motivated. Check out http://www.jazzercise.com to find classes near you. I’ve been doing it almost 25 years and LOVE IT!!! So much more fun than working out by yourself with a video in your family room!!
I can offer no assistance on Mascara. I don’t wear the stuff as it is just one more mess to clean up as I am brought to tears daily during homework time. I truly don’t remember the concept of rounding being so frought with difficulty when I was eight, but it is a concept that simply can not be grasped in my house.
I do however want to comment on the Feel Inside video. That was so one of the funniest things. I wish I had that song as my ringtone. That way I would be giggling quietly to myself everytime the phone rang rather than cringe in fear that it is the Elementary School calling to inform me of the latest thing one of my children have snuck to school or stuck in their ear.
Thanks for the share!
Mary Kay Ultimate mascara is my hands down fave… it’s a little pricey at about $15, but well worth it in my book!
Absolutely agree!
I’ve been using Volum’ Express® The Falsies™ Washable Mascara for a while now. Really plumps and lengthens those lashes!
ME TOO-LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
Have yet to find a mascara that doesn’t end up under my eyes by mid-afternoon. I’ll keep up my search. The work out that I’ve finally settled with is a two-mile walk every morning. That’s it….. no running, no shredding, no abs work. Just me and my sneakers, talking to God in the mornings. Of course, once the snow hits it’s another story, then I go to the gym and do the stair master.
I am so excited for your book! It’s so close! I need help with mascara too. I accidentally bought waterproof after staring at the options for a good 15 minutes. I feel like I can never get all of it off. I did recently invest in a naked eye palette from Urban Decay and LOVE it!
Buxom! About $15–lengthens, thickens and doesn’t clump.
Jordana Best Lash Extreme is the best mascara I’ve ever tried! It’s only $2.99 and available at Walgreens or KMart. Don’t let the cheap price fool you…it’s great!
I second this! Jordana is AWESOME!!!!!!!
I’m waiting for a great mascara recommendation. Have you tried the insanity videos? They are very intense, but it goes by fast and I love them. Don’t need anything extra (weights, bands, etc.) and it works your whole body. Look on ebay or craigs list, do not pay full price. Too many people with good intentions reselling theirs!!
Oh girl, CHANEL INIMITABLE WATERPROOF mascara is the only way to go.
I’m also 40 & have tried them ALL (I used to swear by Lancome too). You can spend the day at a TEXAS POOL with five 9 year olds and this stuff stays put! It’s $30 but I’ll never buy anything else again. My 40 year old eyes thank me daily.
Oh, you’ll need some mega-make up remover at night though. This mascara might be able to survive the zombie apocalypse, so it needs a tough remover.
Your book cover is soooooo pretty!! I can’t wait to read it!! (the whole book, not just the cover–I already read the cover)
OH my that publishing process was way to funny!
Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume. I’m telling you, it will change your life. It’s slightly above your $15 price point, but totally worth it.
I love it when you ask for favorites! : ) I love to read everyone else’s too. I’m a mascara freak and have tried lots of different kinds and brands and now see a few new favorites to try. First I must say that I am never without my Shu Uemura lash curler. That’s a must for me (order online). Currently I’m using Maybelline Falsies. It’s pretty good! (I’m the rare breed who is not a fan of the Maybelline pink and black tube that every girl loves.) Kohl’s brand Flirt, makes a great $16 mascara in the red tube, All That Lash. And wow! I would compare it to Dior Show. Another standout for me that you have to order (ebay is cheapest) is the Leeza Gibbons Sheer Coverage Extra Length mascara. It is a ‘tubing’ mascara…..meaning it creates little tubes over your lashes and stretches them out to here! It doesn’t build a lot of thickness, but is fantastic for length. One of the greatest things about it is that when you wash it off with soap and water, the tubes slide right off…..no racoon eyes. Good luck in your search and let us know if you find something fabulous.
DiorShow is the best ever – worth every penny!
I’m embarassed by the name, but Lashgasm by Toofaced http://www.sephora.com/lashgasm-mascara-P266705. I get it on Sephora. It’s a miracle worker on my non-existent eyelashes. And I’ve never seen that before.
Can’t wait to read your book.
Okay, at first I had no idea where you were going with the video, and then the little girl said, “The sick kids can’t do their hip hop any more.” and I was hooked. (She’s right by the way. Mono Boy is just now able to do his hip hop again. Classes starting next week.)
BEST SONG EVER!!!!
I couldn’t believe they were playing in Shreveport to begin with. That place is a hole. Shoulda played it in College Station.
I like Stillettos Mascara. No idea who makes it. I know it’s a drugstore brand. It’s in a bright red container & shaped like a Stilletto heel.
Melanie, those workout videos don’t work. I bought one once and I must have watched it three thousand, eight hundred and seventy-two times and I DID NOT LOSE ONE OUNCE. Save your money.
My aunt and sister tried those, too and they were NOT at all impressed!
L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes in the golden tube! Love it.
You featured my favorite comedy singing duo—Flight of the Conchords—in that hilarious Feel Inside video. I have both their sitcom season DVD’s (equally hilarious!!!!) but I hadn’t seen this one, so thanks for the laugh! Oh, how I miss those guys! If they’d been on network TV instead of HBO where not everyone could see them, their show would still be running. Funny, funny, funny!
Work-out videos never worked for me either. Wasted money. I need a group around me in order to fully commit, so yoga class finally sucked me in. We all gripe and groan and whine in unison, but we feel better, are more flexible, and look stronger. Callanetics is still a good toning program also—and it isn’t hard to do alone. Only watching what you eat makes the pounds drop off. Trust me on that.
Whoo hoo!!!!! I can not WAIT for your book! I am so excited.
I read your football post yesterday. It was very good, as always.
Love the publishers post. That was hilarious and brilliant!
We are in week two of school. 7th grade. I am already pulling my hair out and my 4 year old hasn’t even started 4-K yet. I don’t know what kind of shape I’ll be in when that begins next week????!!!!
Cover Girl Lash Exact, my friend. Dirt cheap and does a bang-up job of making my invisible lashes look dark and thick. As a bonus, the wand bristles are flexible plastic and don’t do too much damage when one of my kids yells, “MOM!” out of nowhere and I startle and poke myself in the eye.
If you want a splurge for a special occasion, Yves Saint Laurent Faux Cils is great and gives more of a glam, false-lashes look.

Amazing! You’re welcome.
That video made my day!!
Love Flight of the Conchords.
I wrote a post about some of my favorite things last spring. My new mascara was #1 on my list. You will love it…I promise!

I’m the farthest thing from a makeup expert, but I just wrote a post last night on all my favorite makeup products…including mascara…
@kellybren.com
Ok – I just looked up your book on amazon and saw the cover, description, and your biography. Love it! Can’t wait to buy it come February!!!
Thank you for that amazing hit of Aussie Accents. I needed that! And the song, too freaking cute!!!
Brand new mascara on the market – Ginzing Mascara by Origins. $17.50 for a miracle. Love the stuff. The brush is amazing, but it was a three to four day learning curve for this chica. Hope you try it – love to get your thoughts on it.
YAY!!! Can’t wait to read your book!!!
Absolute FAVE is a stupid expensive Chanel Inimitable Intense. I also love the Inimitable Waterproof — so those are my splurge favorites. Also like Benefit “They’re Real” — as I like to layer mascaras… more staying power. When Lancome comes out with a new Definicils, I always try it, but don’t use it consistently…
I don’t make a lot of demands on my mascara, but there is one BIG requirement I have. It cannot irritate my eyes. Allergy-prone, I tend to get the red eye look if I’m not careful with what I put near my eyes. The best answer for me has been Aveda’s Mosscara. I can’t say that it gives me super thick or long lashes, but they are respectable. It goes on very smooth, seldom clumping unless I’m really getting to the bottom of the tube. The mascara washes off easily but doesn’t run under normal conditions. Plus, it contains actual moss from Iceland or some other exotic locale, and I can think of nothing I’d rather have stuck to my eyelashes.
Love your list at PW. Can’t wait for Friday Night/Saturday/Sunday/Monday Night/ some Thursdays!

As well as all the suggestions she got on part one! If I recall correctly, there may have been a chart or two.
Zumba or Crossfit. I used to do Zumba but have now switched to Crossfit. Zumba is more of a fun, playful workout. Crossfit is more of a kick-your-butt type of workout. Usually you can go to a class for free to check it out. You should definitely look into it
The video didn’t work for me
It just said “This video is private”.
I’m late chiming in on the mascara but Maybelline’s Great Lash has always worked for me. It doesn’t cost alot (I dislike using the word cheap here) and I always get compliments on my lashes. That being said, if you want to spend money on mascara, Clinique’s High Impact Extreme Volume mascara is what I’m using now. It’s $19.50 but I got what I’m using in a Bonus Days gift and LOVE it. It doesn’t clump and makes my lashes look long and thick. Their Naturally Glossy ($16.00) mascara is very good too!
I was loyal to DiorShow until I got a sample of Bare Minerals Flawless Definition with a Sephora purhcase. Best mascara I’ve ever used.

Good luck with your search!
Two of my daughters stalked Bethenny when we were in New York in December. I have the photo to prove it.
So, if you’re still mascara shopping….
I’m convinced that lash primer makes a HUGE difference. During my Estee Lauder makeup artist days, I used to demonstrate the primer + mascara and the mascara alone. Sold the primer every time. I still use it & feel like it’s almost pointless to use mascara without it. I’ve tried other primers but always end up going back to Estee Lauder. I’m slightly less loyal when it comes to mascara – I’ve shopped around – but I tend to keep going back to Estee Lauder’s More Than Mascara for every day use. I like the weight of it…not too heavy, doesn’t clump, etc. I may try Laura Mercier next…saw that a few times in the comments above. But EL primer will most definitely be underneath!
Just checked Amazon. Your book is #56 — Wow! And this is August — just think of what will happen by February!!!!!!! I am SO excited for you and soooo looking forward to reading SPARKLY GREEN EARRINGS! Congratulations!!!!!!
