I hope everyone had a lovely Labor Day.
We absolutely did. It’s nice to have a long weekend after the first week of school to completely undo any type of routine we had managed to establish by the end of last week.
And now it’s September. Which means we have about twenty days left of brutally hot heat until we settle into more fall-like temperatures in the low 90’s and I break out my boots.
Our weekend was filled with a whole lot of nothing. On Friday afternoon Gulley stopped by and we caught up for a while until it was time for her to go pick up Will from a birthday party. And then we picked up Mexican food for dinner because we couldn’t muster the strength or the energy to actually go sit in a restaurant, plus P’s back is still on the mend and so he still needs the occasional ice pack. And it’s been so hot that I’ve considered commandeering an ice pack for myself.
On Saturday morning P left for the ranch early to get some work done and Caroline and I stayed in our pajamas until way past a socially acceptable time. She read a book and I watched College Gameday followed by every single football game I could find. And I may have also watched a few or fifty highlight videos of the Aggies win over South Carolina on Thursday night. It was just what we needed after a busy week and not enough sleep.
I also decided I needed to clean the house because all the bathroom construction is driving me crazy and making me feel unorganized. Well, that and the fact that I’m under a book deadline and love to find other things to do besides, you know, write a book. I scrubbed our shower and reorganized our medicine cabinets and threw out some makeup and hair products that had seen better days.
Later that night we met Mimi and Bops and my sister and her family for Italian food and then I stayed up way too late watching Les Miles work his LSU voodoo over Wisconsin. I texted Gulley when LSU went ahead in the fourth quarter and said, “This is why I’m going to be popping Tums like crazy on Thanksgiving night.” You can’t ever count Les Miles out. He’s kind of like Lord Voldemort in a purple windbreaker.
Caroline spent Sunday with a friend and so I decided to use this time to tear out the rest of the wallpaper in her bathroom. We’ve decided to use the existing shiplap walls, but there was a layer of old wallpaper on top of them that needed to be torn off. And it wasn’t so much the wallpaper that did me in as it is the muslin that they nailed to the wall underneath the wallpaper that leaves all these little, tiny strings that need to be cut off. It’s the most monotonous task you can imagine other than reading this blog post.
But I managed to get it done and felt levels of accomplishment that weren’t really warranted for such a thing. And then we picked up more Mexican food for dinner Sunday night because why not? It’s a holiday weekend.
And then we spent Labor Day running a few errands before we met Gulley and her family at the pool for one last summer hurrah. I managed to take a picture of all three kids jumping off the diving board one last time. Only Will was thrilled with this because he’s the only one not in junior high.
Goodbye, summer. You’ve been a good one.
