Just a few things

July 26, 2008

So last night, after our traditional Friday night dinner of Mexican food, Caroline decided she wanted to spend the night with Mimi and Bops.

All of a sudden, P and I found ourselves child-free on a Friday night.

We celebrated by going to HEB, where he bought some Golden Mini-Oreos in honor of his thirteen pound weight loss this past week, and I bought the new InStyle and some Dreyers Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream because I haven’t lost thirteen pounds in the last three years and so why start now?

After HEB, we came home, put on our pajamas, and I spent the next three hours ordering pictures off Shutterfly. I haven’t placed an order for pictures since Easter of ’07.

FOUR HUNDRED AND SIXTY-THREE pictures later, I finished my order.

Can you say ONLY CHILD?

We spent the rest of the evening watching bad movies starring Ashton Kutcher and flipping through the channels 892 times.

I don’t know how we manage with such a full social calendar.

Anyway, here are a few notes of interest that may or may not interest y’all.

1. Beth Moore is coming to San Antonio on August 22-23 for a Living Proof Live event. It’s not too late to register and if you are anywhere near San Antonio I cannot stress enough how awesome it will be. You should seriously make the drive.

2. There is a really great giveaway on LifeWay Allaccess right now. We’re giving away ten copies of Vicki Courtney’s book, “Teen Virtue Confidential” which just won a Christian Book Award.

3. I hate to tempt skincare fate by revealing this information, but I have been using the olive oil/castor oil mixture to clean my face about two to three times a week for the last month and my skin has never been more clear. I am a fan.

**Edited to add that on the days I don’t use the oil cleansing method, I wash my face with Cetaphil. I also use my L’oreal Microdermabrasion kit twice a week.

4. I still haven’t bought any new sheets because I’m waiting on a Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon to arrive in the mail because I’ve decided to try these Pure Beech sheets and I must receive my 20% percent off.

They came highly recommended by several trusted sources, so I’m going to give them a whirl. I’ll let y’all know what I think.

5. I saw this darling jumper by Miniboden and could just picture how cute Caroline would look in it with some brown boots and a brown turtleneck. When I showed it to her, she looked at it and told me, “I don’t do brown”.

I think I’m going to buy it anyway because I am an optimist. Or just in denial.

6. I’m pretty sure that some creature from the phylum rodentia went under our house to breathe its last breath. The smell is seriously causing me to gag just a little.

Can’t wait until the temperature reaches 108 later today. That sucker is going to be ripe.

On that cheery note, have a happy Saturday!

Oh…I can just imagine the smell! Thanks for all the info :) Happy Saturday to you too!

2 Aileen July 26, 2008 at 6:27 am

Just wanted to say that I’m new to your blog (think I found you through Bring the Rain) and I’m enjoying your site. You often have me nodding and chuckling in the morning.

Thanks.

Have a great weekend.

I just went a little search. I thought I had seen some coupons online. (Didn’t) But, I did see a couple of things while you wait for your coupon:

-BB&B takes their own coupons even after they’ve expired.
-They also accept Linen n Things coupons.
-If you buy something (without) the coupon, once you get one, you can take it in with the receipt and get money back
-You can use 5 coupons on 5 things in one visit.
(Now I am thinking you probably know all of this, and I am probably the last person to know.)

Hope you get your sheets soon. And maybe some spray for the “smell.”

:)

OK: so I’m walking through Lowe’s in the Organization Aisle, trolling for ideas to keep a first grade room neater (oxymoron: room full of six year olds/neat)…and there is the MONDAY/TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY….(you get the idea) organizer that PJ recommended for Caroline’s clothes organization in comments from your “Kindergarten Blues” posting. Get that precious jumper (I consider it more blue than brown), get the organizer, and just keep moving the jumper down day-by-day until she wears it, loves it and adds it to the rotation.
When school starts I will not have the brain space for all these random thoughts. Maybe that is a good thing.
Enjoy your Saturday!

“phylum rodentia”! and i thought you weren’t a science person! hee hee.

6 Gayle @ thewestiecrew July 26, 2008 at 7:55 am

#3…blowing my mind.

But I think I’m going to try it. Because I really need to.

7 Amy Beth @ Ministry So Fabulous! July 26, 2008 at 8:11 am

I can’t wait ’til C starts having slumber parties at your house. The stories you will be able to tell………

8 Gayle @ thewestiecrew July 26, 2008 at 8:12 am

Ok, but I do have 60 questions. Here’s one: What do you do on you “off” days to clean your face? Do you skip cleansers all together and just use a washcloth in the shower?
And how did you prepare yours (like not using percentages because I flunked Math).

9 Lori July 26, 2008 at 8:29 am

I am very curious about the olive oil/castor oil cleansing method. I may have missed a key point because the website listed “sunflower oil”…
I am always on the hunt for the “miracle potion”!

10 suburbancorrespondent July 26, 2008 at 8:33 am

I have 500 photos in my Snapfish cart, and approximately 1000 more to edit before I’m done. Don’t even talk to me about it.

11 Moriah @ Please Pass the Salt July 26, 2008 at 8:39 am

I seriously have probably thirteen Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. Lemme know if you end up needing one, lol.

With you on the pictures. Except I have three so that means I have probably 1,587 pictures needing printing.

And that jumper is DARLING. I might just have to splurge on matching ones for my little girls.

12 Gabby July 26, 2008 at 8:39 am

My hubby and I had the freedom of our kids going to Grandma’s last night, too. They are still there, and I feel like we did something illegal by sleeping until 9:00 am.
We shopped for towels and pillows after dinner, and I thought about how much date night changes after 12 years of marriage. (Any advice on really good, absorbent, bath sheet size towels in chocolate brown color?)
Like the fact I was not embarrassed to polish off most of the chocolate cake we shared. I am so glad I am not on a diet, it was divine!

13 A&EMom July 26, 2008 at 8:40 am

I’m thinkin’ P’s got a new excuse to don the camo and go huntin’!

14 Lisa July 26, 2008 at 9:09 am

It is true that Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons never expire even though they have an expiration date. Go figure!

15 Kim July 26, 2008 at 9:19 am

That jumper is ADORABLE! I would be in denial, too! If a little girl showed up in my class with that jumper on, I would waste all sorts of instruction time oohing and aahing and making her twirl and blush! Then I’d ask if I could borrow it for my date the next night!

16 Julie July 26, 2008 at 9:23 am

A kid free night . . . how wonderful!!! Good for you!

17 Kate July 26, 2008 at 9:29 am

My girls don’t do brown, either, but that’s because I won’t buy them brown! DD has a friend (age 7) who constantly wears brown. To me it looks really odd to see a cute little girl in brown. It’s such an older color. You’re only little enough once to wear head to toe pink or purple so you might as well live it up while you can!! :o )

18 Lydia July 26, 2008 at 9:41 am

I have a BB&B coupon that I am not going to use…it is your’s if you want it and I’ll mail it to you for free! Love to give coupons out that I don’t need and others can use!

19 Carolita July 26, 2008 at 10:03 am

I, too, am intruiged by the oil cleansing method. I would love not to have gigantic pores on my nose greeting the world for me. But I wonder as well, what do you do on the in between days? I’m so excited. I’m getting me some castor oil today!

20 Big Mama July 26, 2008 at 10:25 am

I added this information to the post, but for those of y’all that asked, I use Cetaphil to wash my face on the other days. I’m also using my L’Oreal Microdermabrasion kit twice a week because, you know, age spots.

21 The Pumkin Patch July 26, 2008 at 10:59 am

I HEART Golden Oreos. They are 1000% better than the originals.

22 Kelly July 26, 2008 at 11:03 am

“I don’t do brown” – that makes me laugh. That girl. She would look PRECIOUS in that dress and brown tights. I would want to hug her if I was her teacher.
I sooooooooooooooooo wish I could come to San antonio. I am out of vacation days or I would be there with bells on.

23 Beverlydru July 26, 2008 at 11:15 am

I really liked P before you told me he lost 3 lbs in one day. I am going to pretend I didn’t hear you say 13 lbs in a week. Surely you kid. I live with a man that struggles NOT to lose weight. What a battle, huh? Pass the ice cream please.

24 Lynn July 26, 2008 at 12:20 pm

I can NOT lurk anymore. The reason is because I love your honest blog and you crack me up. The fact that you do all this from a Christian perspective just makes it even better. I have a twist for you on your Fashion Friday. I am betting that even you, in all your fashionista knowledge will be stumped. Let me know when you want to tackle it! And the diet? Forget it. You are gorgeous. And Beth Moore? I wish I could come. They are having a live simulacast here on her 100th “something” and I may do that. I’ll be in SA this weekend at the Texas Assn. Coaches babysitting while my son and DIL do all the fun SA things. I’ll be the one at the pool with the precious baby.

25 callee July 26, 2008 at 12:37 pm

I can’t lurk anymore either. I love your blot and felt the desire to comment. I am so going to try that olive oil/castor oil thing. It sounds wonderful! I’ve been using Burt’s Bees, which I love…but it still does the same drying out of my skin that the article talks about. I’ll be going to the store today!

26 Lorrie/Dnksmommy July 26, 2008 at 1:32 pm

well, i was totally enjoying your post until the whole rotting rodent corpse thing. LOL! Ewwww.
Oh, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that cute little jumper. DARLING!
I’m afraid that due to the cuteness alone, I would be forced to MAKE her “do” brown, at least once a month. hehe..

27 Krista July 26, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Beech Street! Those are the ones we got that only get softer with age! Yay!
Be warned though, with that softness comes a total lack of starch so they scrunch all up in bunches really easily if you’re big toss and turn sleepers (like my hubby!)

28 Jill July 26, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Yesterday my little Olivia,5, and a self-taught fashionista, was lucky enough to get a huge bag of handmedowns. Her idea was to have a two hour fashion show where I was her “background girl” and her sister and dad were the audience. I thought of you and Caroline. It’s nice to know I am not alone out here in “little-girl-I-know-fashion” world. Good luck on the brown outfit.

29 Dawn in NC July 26, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Since this was a kind of catch-all post, thought I would ask…did I miss it or did you ever tell us about the books you chose to read on your beach vacation? Since I read daily, I don’t think I missed it, but the curiosity is starting to get to me. Obviously I lead a full, exciting life.

30 Mary B July 26, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Okay I just ordered the Boden catalog. That jumper is beyond adorable!
On another note have you received the Lands End kids catalog that showed the shirts for girls with the high ruffled collars? Like we wore back in the 80′s?

31 Diana July 26, 2008 at 2:43 pm

I’ll assume you are using olive oil with your castor oil rather than sunflower oil as mentioned by the writer of the link you gave us. Sunflower oil is rather expensive so I’d rather use olive oil if it works for you. Thanks!

32 Amanda July 26, 2008 at 2:50 pm

Went to the circus today. Saw a light up clown nose. Thought of you.

33 Darlene July 26, 2008 at 3:12 pm

I don’t think I have commented for awhile, but I read your blog every day.

You just crack me up with your wit.

I have a question for you. I have been contacted to do a giveaway on my blog during a carnival next week and the person that contacted me wants to know if I want her to send everything to me so that I can mail them to the winners or do I want her to send it to the winners directly. What is the best option? I’m not sure about giving out my address, much less the addresses of my winners. Any advice? Please? (Sorry about the huge run-on sentence!)

Thanks,Darlene

34 Beth_C July 26, 2008 at 4:09 pm

“I don’t do brown.”

That girl cracks me up! And if I were you, I wouldn’t waste my money on the jumper.

My daughter is equally fashion conscious and equally strong willed…if I have ever purchased something I knew she wouldn’t like (or that she declared she didn’t like), it just sat in the closet.

Or even worse, I would fight and fight until I finally got it on her. I decided long ago that was not the way to start the day.

Enjoy your weekend and good luck with that stinky smell!

35 Jennifer (Et Tu?) July 26, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Oooh, you’re tempting me with the Beth Moore event. I’ve heard so many good things about her and I’m only about an hour an a half away (in Austin). Hmmm…

Thanks for sharing!

36 Scrapper Mom July 26, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Hi. I am a faitful reader of your blog (and do comment occassionaly)

Just wanted to invite you over for a visit. I am having my first giveaway! Check it out if you get a chance!

37 Shalana July 26, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Your blog always makes me laugh. Love your humor. However, major problemo—Can’t find the L’Oreal kit and I tihnk you’ve mentioned it twice now. Where do you buy it—and please don’t say HEB because they aren’t here. (Though HEB is the best and I miss them!)

38 Marla Taviano July 26, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I buy my photos 400 (or 1250) at a time too.
I’m sooo trying that oil thing.
LOVE the jumper for C.
I’m thinking of hitchhiking to San Antonio.
I sure do like your blog.

39 Rena July 26, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Dear Big Mama,
This is no joke! Would you like me to mail you my 20% off coupon for Bed, Bath and Beyond? I have a couple. You can try the sheets and then let us know what you think.

P.S.
I’m serious! :)
Rena

40 Kristin July 26, 2008 at 9:13 pm

I think I could dress my boys almost exclusively from Miniboden and I even flipped through the catalog looking at the boys names to see if I liked any of them for my third boy!

41 Kristy July 26, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Wow! I just tried the olive oil/castor oil and it is wonderful. My face feels so clean and great. Thank you for sharing.

42 randel July 26, 2008 at 9:59 pm

ok, so those sheets we have. and they are incredibly soft. BUT…. they already have a big rip on the corner. NOT very sturdy/strong, i hate to tell you. and they do ball up a bit.
so use the coupon so you won’t be too disappointed at their life span. :)

43 Kate July 26, 2008 at 10:20 pm

More details on the face regimen please. How on earth do you MIX the oils?? My skin still feels greasy after using it. Do you lay the washcloth on your skin until it cools, or do you just hold it near your face? Could we please have a Sunday Skin like your Fashion Fridays?? Pretty please??

44 chickadee July 26, 2008 at 10:20 pm

that sounds like a great date night.
i just uploaded tons of pictures today too.

45 chickadee July 26, 2008 at 10:23 pm

ok you’ve got me interested in the oil cleaning method. i just went to your link. i’ve always had acne! still do and i’m 38. i don’t think it will ever end, it will just be hidden beneath the wrinkles. i might just give this a try though.

46 erin July 26, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Well, she’s just going to have to start doing brown. That dress is too darn cute!!

47 MooBeeMa July 26, 2008 at 11:37 pm

I can so relate to the rodent part. I had one jump into my bed last night. No lie. I’m still creeped out.

48 cyn July 27, 2008 at 6:54 am

WHy did you mention that jumper?!?!!? I checked it out and my five year old entered the room and went nuts over it. Wicked! I had to explore more clothes on that website. UUGH! Way cute. Now I am too tempted. The good thing (for the checkbook) is that our kids go to a private school and wear uniforms. I think it will make my l ife much easier…although as I had the 5 yr old try on sissy’s old uniforms, she was very upset about having to tuck her shirt in. Oh dear!

49 Sara July 27, 2008 at 8:00 am

#3 My 18 yo DD with realllllly bad acne switched to the oil cleansing method, as nothing else was working, and it’s amazing!!! Her skin is clear (except for scars and the occasional zit that pops up and is gone in a day). She uses 3/4 castor oil and 1/4 olive oil. That’s too heavy for me b/c I have better/older skin. I use 1/2 and 1/2 which I think is still a little heavy. I’ll try 1/4 castor and 3/4 olive next time. Almond oil is ok if you don’t want olive. Put the hot washcloth on your face to steam and then wipe. Repeat 2 or 3 times til it’s clean.

I use just water when I don’t use OC method. Sometimes almond oil and sugar scrub for my own dermabrasion.

#5 —Don’t bother buying the jumper. That 18 yo never would wear anything I liked and convinced her to try. I wasted a LOT of money over the years.

50 Crystal July 27, 2008 at 8:44 am

Good morning,
I found your blog through Angie’s (Audrey, Kate,Ellie & Abby’s Mom).I truly enjoy reading your entries. I moved from Austin, TX to Ohio in 2004. I go back to TX for work about 3 times a year. I love it there so I really appreciate reading about good Mexican food and HEB and other things that I just can’t get here.Do you ever go to Taco Taco? I was supposed to go last month when was in San Antonio for a sales meeting but I didn’t have the energy to get up early enough to run and be ready to leave at 6:45 in the morning. We were told you have to get there early because it’s so popular. That you for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy your skinny cows. :O)

51 Prairie Rose July 27, 2008 at 11:49 am

Okay, that castor oil thing is really interesting… I might just have to try it.

You’ve been nominated for an award. http://fragranceofsweetgrass.blogspot.com/2008/07/my-first-award.html for details. :)

52 Kacey July 27, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I do Bed, Bath and Beyond on a regular basis. (I’ve been there three times this week) I keep every coupon I get. I fold them up and stick them in the pocket of the car seat….just in case I am struck with the need to buy something. We remodeled the guest bath last week and I just had to have tomato colored towels, and a couple of pictures and some flowers and…. Anyway, we have the Pure Beech Jersey sheets in our Florida home … not the Sateen ones. I had to buy them, because they were the only ones in the right color. While I love the silky soft feel, they started getting a touch limp after a few washings and tend to “pill” a little; however, they stretch over fat mattresses like a dream. I think I would buy the same ones again, even with the limp problem.

53 Jill July 27, 2008 at 8:12 pm

My daughter doesn’t “do brown” either. Khaki, chocolate it don’t matter. Don’t you just love 4.

54 Natalie @ I AM (not) July 27, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Golden Oreos. Oh. My. Word. I’m convinced they are a wee taste of heaven.

55 Heather July 27, 2008 at 10:10 pm

i’m intrigued by the oil method. does it work for rosacea?

56 Missy @ It's Almost Naptime July 27, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Ok, I am glad to hear you like the oil cleansing method because I have been wanting to try it but wanted to hear that it worked from a real live person.

Because my previous experiences with castor oil – which involved slamming bottles in desperate attempts to coax out babies, resulting in much less cute results being painfully coaxed out of my body – were not delightsome at all.

57 Kathy July 28, 2008 at 8:42 am

We have that Boden dress on order….I can’t wait to get it!

Love your blog!

Whoop!’99

58 Elizabeth July 28, 2008 at 11:41 am

I highly recommend the Beech Sheets- the ones you linked- and the cotton ones. They get softer and softer as you wash them and last forever. The are warm in winter and cool in summer! My husband and I LOVE them!

59 KarateMom July 29, 2008 at 6:25 am

OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! You will love, love, LOVE the Pure Beech sheets!! My mom got us some for Christmas and they are so fantastic that I never change them to other sheets – I just wash them and put them right back on the bed!
Trust me, you will need two coupons because you’ll want two sets!!

60 Jackie Sue July 29, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Just catching up on my blog reading and wanted to make sure that you knew that BB&B takes any competitors coupons and that they don’t count the expiration date…coupons are good there all the time. Now, there’s some good news for you. Hope the smell is gone by now.

61 Jackie Sue July 29, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Well, let me clarify…BB&B takes Linen & Things coupons…maybe not ANY coupon, but you could call and see.
