Edition 36: Fashion Friday

September 5, 2008

Oh, yes. Fashion Friday is back.

For real.

I know there were some who thought it wouldn’t happen. There were rumors that I had given up on Fashion Friday.

Actually, I don’t know that anyone cared enough to discuss it, but it makes me feel better to think that maybe they did, so we’ll go with that theory.

Now that Caroline is back in school, I have spent a lot of hours shopping.

It’s all in the name of research.

Here is what I’ve discovered. If I had saved everything in my closet between 1986 and 1989, I could pull it out, wear it tomorrow and totally be in style.

Plaid shirts with ruffles down the front? Check. Ankle booties? Check. Gray jeans with tapered legs? Check.

I’m not going to lie, I’m frightened.

In fact, when A.J. got home from Africa, she informed me that top-siders are back in style. And I was all like, “NO WAY!” (because apparently my linguistic skills have also regressed back to 1988.)

She told me that everyone is wearing them and that they are so comfortable.

Yes, I know they are comfortable because I used to wear them frequently with my denim prairie skirt.

The truth is that I actually need a comfortable, flat shoe in my life, but the top-sider isn’t going to happen. I just don’t have the time to roll up the ends of those laces anymore while I make an awesome mix tape.

The point is that the fall trends have a lot of 80′s influence, so proceed with caution and remember less is more. I realize that fashion lesson sailed right over the heads of the cast of “Dynasty”, but it’s not too late for you.

Top Fall Trends

1. Berry Colors

This would explain all the purple I’m seeing in stores everywhere. I have to be honest, I’m not a fan of purple. In fact, I don’t know that I’ve ever owned a piece of purple clothing other than a pair of purple socks I wore in second grade because I wanted to be like Donny Osmond.

It just makes me feel like a grape. But that’s just my own personal issue.

The good news is that you don’t have to go with purple. You can look for fuschia, magenta, or burgundy.

Here are a few great pieces that will help you add these colors to your wardrobe.

2. Plaid

I told someone that being in Nordstrom the other day was like experiencing time travel. But without Michael J. Fox or a DeLorean.

I have never seen so much plaid.

It made me think about an outfit I had during my junior year that was a red plaid skirt with a red plaid shirt (Seriously? Was I Scottish in 1987?) but it was reversible and had houndstooth print on the other side. I can’t even describe how cool I was.

Especially when I wore it with my little Esprit booties that looked like they had wool socks coming out the top. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Anyway, plaid is making a fierce comeback. I knew I should have saved that outfit.

Curse you, closet cleanout of 1991.

Here are a few cute things that will add some plaid to your closet.

Esprit booties are optional.

3. Floral/Abstract Prints

Although I do enjoy a floral print in moderation, just the term “floral print” makes me think of Mrs. Roper from “Three’s Company”.

There again, it’s probably just me.

Prints are very in this season. Look for them in jewel-tone colors or rich oranges and browns.

These are some really pretty floral prints.

Just remember, don’t overdo it or you might look like Mrs. Roper.

4. Romantic Blouses

Think satin, lace and ruffles. Not necessarily all at the same time.

Here are a few feminine, romantic blouses. You can dress them down with a pair of jeans or dress them up with a pencil skirt or a great pair of pants.

And I realize that this isn’t a blouse, but it is romantic and feminine and I ADORE it with every fiber of my being. This one, too.

If Anthropologie needs anyone to test either of these out, I am happy to volunteer my services. However, I’m afraid the only people interested in me trying anything out are the people who sell breakfast cereal.

And who cares about that?

5. A great pair of jeans

I’ll be honest. This isn’t on any actual trend list for the fall and I’ll tell you why. The fashion experts assume that if you care about fashion AT ALL, you will already own a great pair of jeans.

And I realize that I tend to harp on this A LOT.

But jeans are important, Ladies. (And you three gentlemen) Do not underestimate the power of a great pair of jeans. They will change your life.

Now is the time to find a pair of jeans that you will love and cherish. Don’t wait to lose five pounds, don’t wait until there’s a big sale, GO.

GO NOW.

You don’t need to spend a bunch of money, just find a pair that fit really well and are in style. They can be boot leg, straight leg (God bless you for your bravery) or trouser jeans. Once you have a really good pair of jeans, it makes everything in your closet look better. I guarantee it.

I’ll be back next week with the other five trends for fall. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you if you’ve found some great fall items that you can’t live without.

Oh, and I’m heading to Las Vegas this weekend to blog about Deeper Still on LifeWay Allaccess because what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. You can catch up with me there throughout the weekend.

Y’all have a great Friday!

I just bought a sheer ruffle blouse with leopard print from Forever 21, it has a wide black elastic belt and when I wore it to work yesterday the compliments were a’flowin. Glad to know I’m finally ‘in style’.

I can’t wait for next week.

Oh, you did not just use the word burgundy. I thought that word, and everything associated with it was put to rest, for good, in 1995.
I’m scered.

3 Angela September 5, 2008 at 6:48 am

I just had to leave a comment. Found your blog through That Family. My husband was at Texas A&M at the same time…Class of 93/94 and we lived in B/CS when we were first married. So much of what you talk about it so familiar and funny which I needed on this morning when I was woken up at 5:30 due to the new neighbor’s barking dog waking the baby and I couldn’t get back to sleep so I thought I would surf…Nice to meet you. Thanks for the smile!

4 Alison September 5, 2008 at 6:51 am

Thanks for the fashion trends. I have just gotten back into the Premier Designs Jewelry business and I like to keep up on the fashion world!

5 chocolatechic September 5, 2008 at 7:01 am

Anything…anything but ruffled blouses.

What is one with a large chest to do? Stick 3 feet out instead of 2?

A pox on ruffled blouses.

6 Suzie September 5, 2008 at 7:23 am

You just had to mention the boots with the faux socks coming out of the tops….Christmas my 9th grade year of High School. One of the highlights of my freshman year….sad, I know.

7 hulagirlatheart September 5, 2008 at 7:39 am

Are rainbow suspenders littered with decorative pins coming back, too? Knickers that button at the knees? Or how about big hair? Ooh, tell me big hair is coming back. I’ve missed my satellite dish bangs.

8 Jessica September 5, 2008 at 7:46 am

I have seen the return to the 80′s trend coming for a while. History does indeed repeat itself!

But, I am sorry, when I see these 80′s outfits in the stores and on people all I can think is how ridiculous they look! And I have to wear THAT to be “in style” now?? Do I really have to wear nasty skinny jeans and a VEST??? The last time I wore a vest I was 10.

I love 80′s music but I do not love 80′s clothing. At all. :-)
So I guess I’m not going to be hip for a while.
Is anyone else upset about the return to 80′s style besides me?

9 Sufficient Grace September 5, 2008 at 7:46 am

I love the fact that orange is in! What about red – since it is the color of a lot of what I fashion myself in…

10 Amy from Texas September 5, 2008 at 7:50 am

I’m glad someone else thinks it’s a time warp in stores like Nordstrom… I was beginning to feel really old. I will, like, totally gag myself with a spoon if acid washed denim comes back!

The one thing I can’t live without for fall is a good pair of boots. I try to get a nice new pair each year. Maybe you can do a fashion friday on shoes! That would be so fun.

Have a great time in Vegas!

11 Shelly McCabe September 5, 2008 at 7:54 am

Amen on no purple. I am not a purple fan either. But, I have to say I’m very tempted by those top-siders. They are just too cute.

I’ve loved the fall items I’ve seen in the Ann Taylor loft window recently. Great stuff.

12 Shelly W September 5, 2008 at 7:54 am

I took my two teenage daughters shopping last weekend and just about laughed myself silly looking at the clothes they have out now. I know what you mean about Nordstrom! In fact, this morning my freshman left in a navy blue and kelly green (!) PLAID shirt-dress thing. She looked adorable, but I think I owned that same shirt in 1980. Seriously!

Loved you line: “What, was I Scottish in 1987?!” My first laugh of the day. Thanks!

13 rrmama September 5, 2008 at 8:03 am

The only great thing from the 80′s is the music. I have to admit that I wanted to buy my oldest son a pair of plaid shorts and he told me he would not be seen in public wearing them. So I bought the youngest one a pair instead and he loves them!

14 Kimberly September 5, 2008 at 8:11 am

OK, just to clarify…by topsiders do you mean what I used to call “boat shoes” or Dexter Style? If so, let me tell you that it has definitely made the teenage circle in BCS. I was informed by my daughter that she wants a pair she saw at Dillards that were $80.00…I told her we would make a trip to payless this weekend! LOL

15 Amanda September 5, 2008 at 8:19 am

The 80s were HORRIBLE fashion wise and I’m disgusted that they’re back. I REFUSE to participate!

16 Superchikk September 5, 2008 at 8:30 am

I was thinking the same thing yesterday as I was browsing at Target…the 80′s are back. I saw a bronze shiny (how else to describe it?) jacket with all sorts of zippers and a knitted collar.

My first thought was “Does Michael Jackson shop here?”

And yes, the shoes are back too. I saw those hideous boots with buttons on the side yesterday too. Ugh. Lord help us all.

17 Stephanie from MO September 5, 2008 at 8:31 am

I distinctly remember a lovely green, gold and black plaid pleated skirt, with matching top–complete with sailor bib on the back–that I wore in high school. And a couple of plaid jumpers. The jr/sr high hall at our church looks like my school about 20 years ago! They’re all in leggings, vests and bright flourescent colors. At least the hair isn’t big yet. I have seen that pegged jeans have made the celebrity circle….courtesy of People magazine. Oh my….I just don’t know……

18 Sarah W. September 5, 2008 at 8:31 am

I am a little freaking out because I bought some awesome Michael Kors flats on clearance a few days ago. They are not top siders, but they are only a few inches away from looking similar. Please tell me before I return them that they look totally different. (please!).

Second, while I would love love love to wear only designer jeans (I have two pairs that were a gift from a friend, and I love them), my budget does not allow for it. I found “The Diva” jeans from Old Navy to be really awesome. I typically do not like Old Navy’s jeans, but the darker rinse bootcut “The Diva” jeans are so flattering!! Thought I may give some advice to the ladies.

19 Moriah @ Please Pass the Salt September 5, 2008 at 8:34 am

Yeah, not hoppin’ on the 80′s bandwagon. It’s funny, though, clicking on several of your links — it really feels like a mishmash of all sorts of stuff. You can still wear “in-style” clothing withOUT wearing anything 80′sish.

Thank heavens.

20 Michelle September 5, 2008 at 8:37 am

Ok, my whole entire high school years just flashed before my eyes as I was reading this….I decided to go shopping last night for a few fall pieces….Came home with NOTHING!!!!

21 Tricia September 5, 2008 at 8:37 am

My teenage son just asked me to buy him a hoodie, zip up jacket that I swear I had in my closet in 1982.

I could hear the son ‘Thriller’ playing in the background as I looked at that jacket…

22 Sallie September 5, 2008 at 8:41 am

I know exactly what you mean. I walked in Target the other day. Paused and looked around to see if I had stepped through a time warp. I felt like I was back in the 80′s looking for the coolest clothes to wear with my permed hair and BIG hair bow! Oh boy – I don’t know if I can do it again.

23 Janet (aka JT) September 5, 2008 at 8:50 am

“Oh, and I’m heading to Vegas later today…”

Yeah, I pretty much hate you now.

Not that my own life isn’t exciting–I may go to HEB later JUST BECAUSE. As in, I don’t even think I need anything, I’m just goin’ to see what kind of trouble I can stir up.

Oh, I’m kidding. I really don’t hate you. And I’ll pray for a safe trip and for a great time to be had! Is Sophie going? Because if she is, then I’d pretty much be back to hating you again…

24 Ashley@ mrs007.net September 5, 2008 at 8:57 am

Can we just go back to the jeans for a second? I am short (really short…like I lie on my drivers license and say I am 5’0)….and my belly is no longer flat. I have THE hardest time finding jeans.

They have to be low waisted….but not TOO low waisted. They have to be bootcut…but not too bellbottomy (is that a word?) And the most important part is that they have to be short…but not too short. It is hard to find all of these characteristics. I am willing to pay what I need to if I can just find the right pair.

I am in a sort of weird in between age because I don’t want to dress too young and I don’t want to wear mom jeans or look like I borrowed my grandma’s clothes. I need help! Where can I find these jeans? Oh well if I can’t find them…I can always just go to Target and buy some leggings.

25 Natalie @ I AM (not) September 5, 2008 at 9:01 am

I had the socked boots. I was super cool.

26 Daniella September 5, 2008 at 9:03 am

Oh yes, sista! DO EVERYTHING IN MODERATION! ONE fashion trend at a time or else you’ll look at pics in even two years and say “what was I thinking?” I say you pick a couple of trends that suit you best and feel most comfortable with and wear them with classy peices like a GOOD pair of jeans, slacks, or skirt.

Remember: if you do flowy or voluminous top, pair it with a fitted bottom (whether it’s skirt or pant). And vice versa. Same rule for make-up: if you do heavy eyes, do lite lipstick/gloss and vice versa.

This fall I’m seriously into ruffles (on shoes, blouses, dresses, tops, etc.) and the skinny belt: layer a dress and thin cardigan and finish with skinny belt. If you stuggle in the waist area time to invest in a good pair of Spanx or get the knockoff version Accets from Target. Get em all – upper body, mid-section, lower body – clothes look so much better when everything is smooth underneath.

Ok, I got my two-cents in even though I could go on and on. After all, I came out my mother’s woumb wearing high heels :-)

27 Brickhouse September 5, 2008 at 9:06 am

I remember the plaid outfit. It was TOTALLY AWESOME. I was so jealous. I thought you had stepped out of a Ralph Lauren ad or something.

What about wrap skirts? When are those babies making a comeback? I must have had every length and style offered!!!

28 Lora Lynn September 5, 2008 at 9:08 am

Some friends came over recently and helped me go through my closet. Since I’m on bedrest, they did all the moving and I just pointed to the correct pile. I finally parted with some shirts I’ve had since high school (which admittedly, wasn’t in the 80s, but I’m still talking 11-13 years ago). Are you trying to tell me I should hang onto them just a little bit longer? Because they’re still in the garage…

29 Cheri September 5, 2008 at 9:09 am

Don’t forget about J Jill – as a newly “svelter” lady, I actually fit in some of their clothes and let me tell you what a relief it is to not have to shop at Omar the Tent Makers ANY LONGER! Several of my daughter’s friends swear by the J Jill jeans and I am a woman with a mission – to buy my first pair of jeans in 20 years that does NOT say “Avenue” on the label. Let’s just say this is the FIRST time I’ve read Fashion Friday with actual interest as I finally have a chance to WEAR some of the things!

30 Julie H. September 5, 2008 at 9:10 am

I’m just hanging tight with my classics for this season. I survived the 80′s as a teenager, I don’t think I can relive it once more in my wardrobe! I saw the other day that high waisted pants are in now and I just had to groan. My torso already is short, wearing high waisted pants makes me look like I’m a senior citizen in a nursing home who pulled my pants up too high. Nothing fashionable about that!
Take care,
Julie

31 muffintop September 5, 2008 at 9:19 am

You lost me after “jeans with tapered legs.” Noooooo, please, nooooooooooooo!

32 Lynn September 5, 2008 at 9:35 am

OK…I am determined to own a GREAT pair of jeans this year. Cost no more than $100. Less if possible, I am talking lot less if possible. But, I am willing to save. Brand name suggestions appreciated that are not in the pile at Walmart. Here is the scene: Older lady in age years but still thinking she is in her 30′s. Wears a size 10 petite. The petite is for the shortness of legs not the petiteness of the behind which is NOT petite. I would like to have them long enough to wear with a pair of stylish boots. Email me if you can, in your spare time!

33 life with the wisners September 5, 2008 at 9:41 am

what i would give to see your sitemeter today.

with all of the clicking back and forth. whew, i am beat.

and apparently, i need to get to a mall. stat.

and this post? brings one word to my mind?

loafer.

34 nicole September 5, 2008 at 10:11 am

I’m glad Fashion Friday is back. And I am happy to say I actually bought one of the shirts you linked to, this week. Woohoo. Enjoy Vegas.

35 Gabby September 5, 2008 at 10:20 am

I will stand up to peer pressure this time around.
I will wear NARY a Sperry.
I will NOT don my legs in patterned tights.
I WILL NOT wear a big, pink paisley shirt with tight, tapered-leg jeans, and ankle boots that zip up the side.
Mostly because I weigh, like 80 pounds more this time around (ah, Jr. High size, I miss you), and because I have to stand up for something that matters… good taste in clothing!

36 Marla Taviano September 5, 2008 at 10:23 am

You know what’s just crazy? In the fall, I wear random jeans with plain-colored t-shirts layered over plain-(other)-colored long-sleeved t-shirts. I own no printed clothing. I have no desire to buy anything fashionable. When I speak at stuff, I wear all black. I hate shopping. I never buy clothes.

I’m a complete fashion misfit. And don’t even care.

And yet, AND YET!!, I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your Fashion Friday posts. LOVE them. It’s unexplainable really.

You rock.

37 Elizabeth September 5, 2008 at 10:27 am

Have any advice for Maternity clothes for the fall and winter? I am due in late December and live in South Georgia- it doesn’t get cold, but you still have to dress accordingly. I know you were pregnant with Caroline during the winter and spring months, but any help would be greatly appreciated!
Now to the the 80′s fashions- I wonder if it will be come cool again to wear your shirt tied off the side? All the cool girls did that ya know! Then there was the layer of socks… don’t get me started!

Great fashion Friday blog! Enjoy Vegas!

38 Steffj89 September 5, 2008 at 10:47 am

Oh Elizabeth…you just asked my question…i am due dec 28 and the body baring maternity route is soooo not for me. i am 37 not 12 and would prefer to dress accordingly. also we are in OK so doesnt get super cold here either.
btw…check out the Dec 2008 mommies yahoo group.
Steff

39 Ashleigh (Heart and Home) September 5, 2008 at 11:07 am

Seriously? Has it even been a year since we all solemnly vowed never to wear anything remotely remniscent of the ’80s?? And yet, here we are. It’s a slippery slope, my friend, a slippery slope.

40 Jennifer September 5, 2008 at 11:32 am

Esprit…MAN that takes me back.

41 Alaskalark September 5, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Could you please tell me what is up with stretch denim? Even my jeans with only 1% spandex are baggy by the end of the day. I have jeans that look fab in the morning but are a size too large by noon. I’ve even bought a smaller size to no avail, same issue. Thoughts?

42 Kim September 5, 2008 at 12:25 pm

I saw “leg warmers” the other day! It’s like we are stepping back in time….

43 Holly Smith September 5, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Next thing you know, we’ll be getting ginormous bows in all colors to do with our top-siders :) and we’ll be calling one another bow-head again.

Praying for you all this weekend.

44 Holly Smith September 5, 2008 at 1:21 pm

…wish I still had my Hard Rock cafe leather jacket. It would be all.the.rage!

45 randel September 5, 2008 at 1:32 pm

ugh!
i hate it ALL! ESPECIALLY the plaid items you featured. yikes….

exceptions: those fabulous cardigans from anthropologie that would deplete my savings account

46 Nikki September 5, 2008 at 1:43 pm

Went to Francesca’s today in Houston for the first time and bought this http://www.francescascollections.com/Apparel/Dresses/PRD_12728/Monarch+Butterfly+Dress.jsp dress. Will wear it to the Toby Keith concert tomorrow night. Thanks for the tip about a fun, reasonably priced clothing store. Enjoy your weekend!

47 Mel September 5, 2008 at 3:10 pm

When another mom at my mom’s group wore a white t-shirt dress with a thick black patent leather belt, I thought, “Is that back in style?” Apparently, yes!

I remember owning a pair of black Guess jeans overalls and my grandfather asked, “You paid how much for a pair of OVERALLS?” He was stunned.

48 Colette September 5, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Class of ’89 here. Oh those were the days, the days I’d rather forget.
No walking into Nordstroms for me. Nope, not gonna do it.

Anywho, next week can you direct us to reasonably priced purses? Ones that seem to hold up well when the cough syrup you brought home from work spills accidently, soaks into your jeans and ruins your purse all the while making your dining neighbor stare at you because you smell like grape but have no idea why because you don’t have a sense of smell to begin with?
Ohhh Uno’s. I won’t be going back there anytime soon.

49 Elizabeth September 5, 2008 at 3:39 pm

I’m sorry, but I CANNOT GO BACK to that time of torture known as the eighties. Why on earth does anyone want to bring back those horrible days of fashion. Now, the music….. that’s a different story!!!

50 Lucy September 5, 2008 at 4:07 pm

I’m resolved to just stick to yoga pants and tee shirt until this fasion phase pases.

51 Lisa @ The PW September 5, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I have yet to find that perfect pair of jeans. Or I should say the perfect pair of jeans that do not cost $150.

The quest continues..

52 Michelle Burrill September 5, 2008 at 6:09 pm

I completely agree about the jeans. Any of those tops are sweaters look amazing with jeans.
And I would advise against the straight leg jean. They just are not attractive on just about anyone. Boot cut is always fabulous, though! :-)

53 Susan B. September 5, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I love Fashion Friday. Saw some great tops. I think I may have glimpsed the plaid at The Gap as I rushed by to the Hallmark store. No time to shop…may have to go back tomorrow. Found a great pair of jeans on the Gap website – on sale, too. Even though I bought petite, they’re still a little longer. Will look great with boots this winter. They are flared at the bottom – makes me feel younger.

For the ladies who are expecting babies…One of the ladies on the The Today Show ws going on maternity leave today. She had the cutest maternity clothes. Seems like she said she liked Banana Republic and Gap and maybe even Old Navy.

54 Lana Right Now September 5, 2008 at 8:16 pm

I just loved seeing these two words together again…”prairie skirt”

Ahh the memories.

55 k&c's mom September 5, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Do you ever wonder, like I do, if designers get lazy and get out a catalog from 20 years ago and just copy the clothes for this season? The fashions are just too close to be a coincidence. I OWNED those same clothes 20 years ago. (Or maybe they find a sealed warehouse full of clothese from 1985 and think, “Hmmmmmm. We can make a lot of money off of these if we retail them as brand new.”)

56 shelley@itchesandscratches.blogspot.com September 5, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I was in The Children’s Place yesterday, and had to do a double take when I saw…

Stirrup pants.

Oh my.

I actually looked right at the sales lady and said, “You have got to be kidding me!”

She just laughed.

I can still remember how those stirrup straps felt in my Esprit booties, with my scrunched up socks. But I honestly thought that was a trend that would never make it back.

I guess that’s why mom said, “Never say never!”

57 Libby September 5, 2008 at 10:53 pm

I love Fashion Fridays & truly appreciate the effort you put forth, but if plaid & purple is what we have to choose from this fall, I’m sure no one would be surprised if you gave up! Any shade of purple, call it what you will, is simply depressing. We had a couple of cool days this week so I hit some of my favorite shops; I came home empty-handed. If there is anything to miss about the 80′s, it’s the ubiquitous swishy track suit; was it really forgiving, or are my memories distorted by this drought of real fashion?

58 Kit September 6, 2008 at 12:01 am

Oh, I love fashion friday! I’m so glad it’s back.
Two things:
Re. purple: in third grade I had THE COOLEST purple jeans with SILVER UNICORNS on the back pockets. Oh yes I did. They looked so cool with the comb sticking out, too.
Re. a good pair of jeans: I don’t know about Texas, but here in Boston at American Eagle Outfitters, they have a promotion in which you get a free movie ticket for trying on a pair of jeans. So hubby and I (with four kids in tow) were like, “Score! Free movie night if we both try on jeans!” Totally not looking for jeans, but come on! So we try on jeans, and hubby asks for his movie ticket. And they give him a hard time! Like this, “Well, how many pairs did you try on? Are you honestly looking for jeans?”
No! But your sign says free movie ticket for trying on jeans, and we just did! So cough it up! They finally did (probably to get rid of us and our four kids).
Here’s the best part. If you BUY jeans, you get TWO tickets. So TOMORROW I’m going to go back and BUY jeans and get TWO more free movie tickets because I actually did find a very cute pair of jeans with a little stretch (thank you very much). Did you see how that all eventually came back around to your point about jeans?
Have a great weekend, Big Mama!

59 doodah September 6, 2008 at 2:08 am

Oh, I am so laughing at myself, b/c I attended a final summer wedding this last weekend and had a Major Outfit Crisis. Garden Wedding. At night. In the San Francisco Bay Area. Which = cold and windy. Sigh. And I had all these show requirements and hair issues and other things that were limiting my options. I don’t want to freeze, but I don’t want to wear ugly colors, or buy new shoes, or blah, blah. Didn’t want to spend $130…

After hours of shopping, in desperation I chose one of those long, sort of bohemian sundresses with a shawl. You know the kind that all the celebrities wore this summer with their gladiator sandals.

Um yeah. I’m pretty sure that my look was not so much Lauren Conrad as it was Mrs. Roper. Ha!

Oh well. I was warm.

60 doodah September 6, 2008 at 2:09 am

That should be “shoe requirements”. I wasn’t, you know, performing or anything.

61 Capri K September 6, 2008 at 7:04 am

I have lived through the 80′s fashion once. I am NOT going back.

62 Laura Carney September 6, 2008 at 8:10 am

Oooo…this is my first Fashion Friday since I am a new reader, and I love it :) ! Plus, I even realized that every word is linked with a different item. I know, it took me a few. It is early in the morning here in MI :) !

63 AJ September 6, 2008 at 9:34 am

You can ignore the top-siders but you won’t be as cool as us 20 somethings!

You can deny the top-siders all you want but you won’t be as fashionable as us 20 somethings!

i’m a self-confessed blue jean snob…

it is my hip’s fault.
and my butt’s fault.

nothing makes my hips and butt happier than a great pair of blue jeans!

WOW! Vegas like I just saw on ALL Access, I can Handle!!! (P.S. I forgot on the last entry — Caroline is a shoo in for a future V.P.!!)

ok am i the only weirdo here? i loved the majority of my 80s clothes in particular the zip leg guess jeans…
i dont care how good those stupid boot leg jeans look i absolutely hate them….
and the deep vee forenza sweaters from the limited…oh yeah please bring those back…plaid…never was my thing…will gladly do without the cotton teddy bear button down shirt this time
but would i do jams with a lime green shirt again…oh yeah absolutely much more fun than the recent era of stomach showing fat roll low cut jean era…

LOL. Now back in the 80′s I was slim. Now I’m a Big Girl. We do not want to put plaid and flower patterns on me at all. LOL What are these people thinking? And I agree with the above poster about the ruffles and the big chest. :D I don’t see it happening. I do remember all the trends and the Esprit boots too. I prefer to keep them in the 80′s though. I dress to impress myself.

And purple on me would remind me of Barney. You know….I love you, you love me….that Barney.

Ok, I have a Fashion Friday question. What type of hot rollers do you use? I need to start going back to do my hair using them when my baby comes. When I’ve used them in the past, they always split my ends even though I do use good product in my hair. Just curious what kind you have and where you bought them.

Hi Big,

I wish I’d had a chance to meet you in San Antonio @ LPL. We got there early for LifeWay training at Oak Hills and then spent time with my sister who lives in S.A. so there just wasn’t time to do everything.

Frankly I think all these diesigners saved all their old clothes from their teenage years and are recycling them. Alas, this is not a good fashion year. However,I did find a wonderful pair of very wide legged jeans by AZI that make my rear look less wide. I think it’s because the width of the legs is so much bigger than the rear. It takes me back to high school. Just hope I don’t look ridiculous!

Does this mean I can get out my white scrubchable socks and tight roll my jeans up? Is mall hair coming back again, if so I need to stockpile some white rain and rave pronto!

This was fun. I have heard SO MUCH about Big Mama’s Fashion Friday I finally had to check it out. I could spend all night linking away. And you found some cute stuff. I even forgive you for the Red Plaid micro-mini dress (Because really if you can pull that off, I would be forced to hate you) because of the fabulous floral tunic that I must now find a way to own.

Be back next week.

Ok so this isn’t about the new fall fashion trends but it is about fall fashion in that it is a question about halloween costumes. I remember you made a really adorable pumpkin costume for Caroline and I was wondering if you’d share the knowledge of how to make the tutu/skirt that went with it. Thanks. From a costume making impaired mama.

I am loving this sweater from Talbots in boysenberry! The color is fabulous, and I love wearing bright colors still in the fall/winter!

My favorite pair of jeans is from Eddie Bauer.
They have a fit they call “Curvy”. (to say the least!) These jeans are a size smaller in the waist than they are in the hips.
Usually when I try on jeans, I have to get them big enough to fit my butt and hips and they are HUGE in the waist. Not so with these jeans. AND, I can wear a size smaller than regular pants which is good for my self-esteem. (Plus, they come in petite!)
This fall, they are also making this fit in corduroy. My order arrives next week!!

So I had been exercising diligently and purged my closet so I could shop last fall for a new wardrobe. I got pregnant….and cried for a week. Now I have another beautiful daughter and a few extra inches, but it’s only been 3 months, right?! We’ve just moved from one coast to the other and after that much time in the van with 3 kids and now mlitary lodging until we find a place here, I took an hour for myself at the base exchange and I followed your advice. I got a pair of jeans. I did not pass go, collect $200 or wait to lose those inches (although I was able to get my normal size!)- came back with a cute pair of wide legged Bandolinis and a trendy little blouse, too. Ahh, the endorphine release! Thanks for the tips and encouragement; the whole family will benefit from the purchase of this outfit! :)
