I’m on my flight home from Nashville and, while I had such a great time, I am so ready to see my people. It’s only been two days, but at my very heart and soul I am a homebody and there is nowhere I’d rather be than tucked into my little house with the two people I love the most.
But, while I’m up here at 36,000 feet, let’s talk about some fashion issues. I’ll answer a question or two in just a minute, but first I am in need of some help.
This is a picture of Vicki Courtney and her video producer, April, that I took during the shoot. I mean not actually DURING the shoot because that would have gotten me thrown off the set and been the end of my big career. Which would totally kill me now that I know the miraculous properties of air-brushed makeup.
Anyway, there’s Vicki and she looks great. What I need to discuss is her necklace. It’s not really her necklace, but rather a necklace the stylist borrowed directly from Kelly Minter’s jewelry box and this picture does not do it justice.
I’m not going to lie, I am totally obsessed with this necklace. I asked Kelly where she got it but it is basically one of those stories along the lines of a friend’s second cousin’s sister’s mother-in-law bought the necklace for her SOMEWHERE in Atlanta.
That totally clears it up.
And when you google all that, amazingly enough, you don’t really get any results that let you know where you can purchase the necklace.
I spent the day in Nashville hanging out with the lovely Annie (internet friend turned real life friend) and I told her all about the necklace, made her take me to several Nashville boutiques where I searched for an identical necklace and other fall fashion finds, and finally realized that only the internet can help me now.
So if any of you have ever seen this necklace or know where I can find one for myself, I would greatly appreciate it. I will even pay American dollars for it. Not that those mean all that much these days.
Okay, now for a few questions.
1. Virginia asks: “Do shoes have to match your handbag these days? I just want one handbag I can carry with EVERYTHING and that is big enough to stick some snacks in and a couple of diapers. Do you have a suggestion for a bag color? Please help.”
No, Virginia, shoes do not have to match your handbag. At least I hope they don’t because it is a rare day that my shoes and my purse actually match.
I’m a big fan of having one bag because all this business of changing your purse like you change your underwear is just asking to leave your wallet or, even worse, a pack of gum in the wrong bag.
I’ll never forget helping my family clean out my Mema’s house after my Papa died and finding all her old purses stashed in the closet. Every single one of them had at least three tubes of lipstick that she probably hadn’t seen since 1946.
Personally, I am looking for a great bag in a jewel-tone. They are really in for the fall and the color will work with just about everything. Here are a few that you might want to check out.
2. Caitlin asks: “I am looking for a simple red dress, about knee length, that covers the shoulders for my sorority’s rush in January. A red dress has been nearly impossible to come by. Know of any good ones?”
Oh, the red dress. It is a tricky proposition.
First, you have all the various shades of red. There are reds with blue undertones and reds with orange undertones. It is enough to make your head spin.
Second, the shoe issue. The last time I owned a red dress I am sad to say that I wore it with white hose and red heels. I’ll blame it on the fact that the year was 1994, but really there is never a good excuse for white hose. Unless you are an RN. Or one hundred years old with bad veins and need the support.
You didn’t mention if the dress could be long-sleeve or had to literally just cover your shoulders, but if it can be long-sleeved then I really like this one and it would look great with a really pretty long necklace. Or maybe this one. Or this. Or this.
Hope that helps. Just remember to stay away from white hose.
3. Pam asks: “How do you know all this fashion stuff, like animal prints are becoming classic and can always be used in moderation?”
Pam, I’m in no way a fashion expert. I just play one on the blog.
All my fashion advice should be taken with a grain of salt because I am in no way qualified other than the fact that I like to shop.
Some people knit, some people do papier mache. I shop.
Someone should put that on a t-shirt. I’d buy it.
Y’all have a great Friday!
Oh, and it’s Sophie’s birthday today. You might want to go wish her a good one. She makes 29 look so good.

I’m on my way to South Carolina this morning and while I’m there I’ll keep an eye out for your necklace.
I always love your fashion posts!! I live in Atlanta and am wondering if that piece came from James Avery. I glanced quickly at the website: http://secure.jamesavery.com/
I saw something similar but I don’t think it’s the exact necklace but James Avery does have some retired pieces (that can be found).
Just bought a jewel-tone purse and love it!
I was in Gymboree yesterday with a friend and we were picking clothes for her seven-year-old daughter and the entire time I thought, “I wonder if Big Mama would think this is fashionable.”
Melanie – Is the cross in a metal frame pendant? If so, there is a girl here who makes them with pics in it, maybe she could design a cross?
Here is her site. http://www.sweetpeastuffonline.com/pendants.htm
If you look close, you may know some of these people.
hilary
hi melanie – not sure on the necklace as we are on the west coast. Check out lisa leonard’s stuff at http://www.lisaleonardonline.com/ She is a good friend, makes great jewelry. missy
Not sure about the necklace…but I live in the ‘burbs of Atlanta, so if you do find it, I’d be happy to go get it and ship it to you!
I’m so glad you linked a metallic purse. I was beginning to think I was nuts for wanting one. But, this time around the metallic purses look better than the shiny ones we all sported in the 80′s. I like how some of them have a muted tone to them… not so shiny and loud!
I would bet you could find something like that in Canton at First Monday Trade Days. Since you live in TX, you probably know about it but just in case…it is near Dallas, and it is always the weekend (Thurs – Sun) preceding the first Monday of the month. I am going tomorrow and will keep an eye out for something like it.
You also might look at http://www.lfhandg.com/ . They do photo and initial jewelry and I bet they could do a cross. The girl that owns it is a friend of a friend and I will ask her as well.
Have a blessed weekend with your family!
I got a jewel-tone purse from my sister YEAR ago, and it still gets compliments. (She’s incredibly fashion-forward.) It’s blue/teal and patent leather, and I carry it with everything.
(It’s also kind of a mom purse, since it’s huge and I’ve been known to find socks, a stapler, and Happy Meal toys inside.)
I have a future Fashion Friday question for you. Do people wear scarves these days, and if so, how? They were popular back in the 70s (at least in my neck of the woods). Not long ago I saw someone in an alumni magazine of my alma mater wearing a scarf the exact same way it was worn 25-30 years ago. I wasn’t sure if that was coming back or if she had never left campus and didn’t know the styles had moved on.
I don’t mean that to be mean — I saved several scarves from that time and I loved wearing them as a way to add a bit of color and pattern to solid colors . I’ve just been afraid to use them anymore lest they look dated.
Well, you COULD be qualified to give fashion advice if you’d have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
But you were at that other hotel in Nashville. The one with the nice pillows.
But maybe you’ve stayed at a Holiday Inn Express at some other point in your life. So then you’re qualified.
At least that’s what the commercials say.
Seriously, You have good taste. And a healthy dose of common sense. That oughta ’bout do it for your Fashion Friday qualifications.
(I tell my husband I have ‘street smarts’–
and he laughs.
and he says, ‘Street Smarts is NOT the same thing as Common Sense, Princess’.)
**Re your necklace**
If you find it in Atlanta on the north side anywhere, I can get it for you.
I love to shop.
I live in Atlanta.
(That’s 2 out of 3 — now just need to find the necklace).
Take Care,
Lavonda
I shop on Etsy ALOT. Not sure if you’ve looked out there yet, but here’s a few that are similar.

Oh MY – the white hose! Yes, I have the college graduation photos from 1994 to prove it – a GREAT red dress by the way, with the white hose and red shoes. At least I’m not the only one with that in my fashion past. But anyway – the JCrew dress – FABULOUS!
I was going to suggest looking at Lisa Leonard’s stuff too… her jewelry is beautiful, and hey, she had an ad in A Big Magazine, which made me feel privileged to have known about her before she became all big and famous.
You were mentioned in someone’s blogroll as being the funniest writer out there. And indeed, you do make me laugh. Anyway, I saw this: http://www.evesaddiction.com/detail_NLZ10674__545__Stainless_Steel_Cross_Double_Dog_Tag_Pendant.html
I love the red dress from J Crew!!!
Thanks for the great advice! I love Fashion Friday.
I’m going to be late picking Tater Tot up from MDO because I HAD to read your post. And then I had to recover from all the laughing.
I’m obviously living an even less unfabulous life than I thought because I’ve never, ever heard of airbrushed makeup. Tatoo’d makeup yes, airbrush no. It’s some great stuff though because oh my goodness, Vicki is some kind of stunning!! As if she weren’t anyway but good cosmetics deserve to be called out.
Glad you girls had such a great time…Can’t wait to see the videos!
The necklace looking like a painted pony product. I have a friend who sells that stuff…it’s very fun. You can even get a necklace like that and put in Caroline’s baby picture! Too cute.
Let me know if you need her e-mail address
Look no further. I design these exact necklaces and way more. Please stop by my website at http://www.faithcreations.shutterfly.com AND my blog at http://www.ricetrio.blogspot.com

Jeremiah 26:10–As for me, I am in Your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right.
When we helped my husband’s grandfather clean out the closet after Granny died, all of her various purses didn’t have lipstick in them — they had MONEY! We found well over $100.
You’ve kind of made me wistful for white hose. Don’t worry, I won’t wear them, but give me a moment to revel in the nostalgia.
These don’t have a cross, but they are similar and the Farm chicks have new styles regularly.

Someone is going to find that necklace for you. I found this and although its not square it may be similar (hard to tell from the picture)

Hi, can I see a photo that is closer up than this one of “the necklace” I can tell it is a square bevel, but can’t tell what is inside it. If i can’t find one for ya, I can definitely make one!!
Sheila
Now. Now. Easy on those white hose. I wore white hose in the 60′s. But then you could wear just about ANYTHING at all (or nothing) in the 60′s.
I just went to Canton Trade Days yesterday and they had that kind of necklace at this booth, here is their website: http://www.cantontradedays.com/rhinestone/rhinestone.htm
Hey! I have a huge question. Is there a way to gently break it to someone (a good friend) that florals and stripes, stripes and plaid, or floral stripes and plaid REALLY don’t match? And also, said person really wants to be a fashion designer and is working towards it. Often her colors don’t match either!! Should I say nothing?
Was the pendant on the necklace a square and 2 dimensional? Was the cross inside sort of glittery? I am almost sure we have those here in our little town in one of our shops. Some of them had hearts inside and some of them crosses. They were almost like boxes. They had some rectangle styles too. These did not open. The glass on both sides is soldered into the silver.
I have no clue why I said 2 dimensional. What does that mean? It was like a little box with glass “windows” on each side is what I meant to say.
Hi, not sure if you found your necklace, but I have worked with vendors for different markets and know a few who make that necklace.. If you’re still looking, e-mail me and I will put you in touch with them.. They are also selling them at “charming charlies” which is this giant costume jewelry store here in Houston.. I am not sure if they have locations where you live, but I have seen them there {but marked up quite a bit}. Round top, and ETSY would be my other suggestions.. {etsy.com is like legal crack {not really} but really, i spend hours on there looking at things, it’s basically a dream come true for any thing in the entire world you could ever want. Great place to find gifts, etc. I have ordered journals for my friends from a woman, and they are amazing and $4 each. They have multi colored pages, and a big giant chandelier made of rhinestones on the front {ahh!} also! etsy is great because if you’re like me and have instant gratification issues, etsy has a search tool where you can search vendors in your area and go stalk them in person}.
That and charming charlies are my suggestion if you have to have it ASAP..
If you have some time to wait or want a unique or less expensive one let me know and I will give you the contact information of the vendors I know. They don’t have websites, and I am not sure if they would want me to post their contact information on here.. I personally got mine from one of them, and LOVE IT.. It’s brighter, and has rhinestones lining the box, and on the inside it has a crown.. They have different chains, etc as well..
I realize this doesn’t make sense, but hopefully if you’re still looking, this will help
After more consideration AKA snooping, I believe this is the necklace in question. I will make a closer inspection tomorrow in person where I will actually put my hands on it and maybe make a picture with my cell phone. However, I do not know how to make my cell phone pics go into the computer. So. That won’t help. I know that the necklace of which I speak was about 22. American Dollars. Let me know if you want to have it in your own precious hands. I’ll send more info tomorrow after my journey into town. Hasta la vista baby.
M,
I need to find my 2 yr old daughter some cute brown shoes, kinda something like some clogs. You know, cute with shirt dresses and tights or jeans or khakis… NOWHERE around where I live has anything that I would even consider. Any suggestions??
