Late Sunday night I made an online appointment to go to the Genius Bar at the Apple store because my keyboard had begun to crack along the bottom. Honestly, I thought it was something I had done but then, while I was in the Dominican, my roommate Keely informed me that her Mac did the same thing and they replaced it for her free of charge.
So I lovingly cleaned my Macbook so it would look presentable for the Geniuses and brought it into the store at approximately 10:30 a.m. while wearing an outfit that would hopefully make me look smart.
The good news is they were more than happy to replace my keyboard. The bad news is it will be 48 hours before I get my Macbook back.
Here’s where I have to ask why it takes a group of self-proclaimed Geniuses two days to undo some screws and attach a new keyboard.
And I mean that in the most loving, supportive way possible.
The problem is that our PC crashed last month and the Macbook is the only computer we own. I’m not sure what happened to the PC, but it probably has something to do with the fact that we never updated any of the software and continued to use it even when the fan quit working and alarms went off to let us know it was VERY HOT. EXTREMELY HOT.
But, really, what’s so important about a fire hazard when you need to check email?
I sweetly explained to my Genius that I “write some stuff on the computer” and it will be “really difficult” for me to be without a computer for 48 hours and if they could get it done any sooner (LIKE TODAY!) that would be so great and I would sing the praises of Apple forever.
Basically I went with the theory that you catch more flies with honey, but if they don’t have my Macbook up and ready to go in two days I will then have to attempt to catch flies with a tantrum and threats of a panic attack right in the midst of all the sleek Apple paraphernalia.
Oh, and the only reason I’m able to tell y’all this is because I have taken my sad, computer-addicted self over to Gulley’s to borrow her computer.
This may even inspire me to put pen to paper and do some old-fashioned journaling. But probably not.
It’s more likely that I will just continue to twitch until my Genius calls to let me know my computer is ready.

Funny how these boxes with wires have become so important to how we connect to the world anymore…..seriously…it’s just a box of wires that hum and blink…and we twitch wildly when they hiccup-
Hope you’ll have your computer back quick as a wink….
From one blogging addict to another: Most public libraries have a whole row or even a room FULL of computers and they are FREE to use. I know this from personal experience.
Technology is so overrated. Tomorrow I had already planned to blog about my horrible four month run around with RCA involving my five month broken DVR and their lack of ability (desire) to replace it or refund the money. At least Apple has told you two days and you have a physical store you can visit. Just don’t pull a “give my daughter a shot!” type tantrum in the Apple Store with a “fix my keyboard now!” Althought it worked for Aurora in Terms of Endearment…
Get Out!
I just had that same keyboard cracking problem on my MacBook last week…figured it was because my son dropped it, but maybe it’s a defect.
Guess I am off to the mall to see the geniuses (and do some eating and shopping.)
All in a day’s work…
Above all, remain calm. Don’t panic. Breathe.
OH lord! I don’t know what I would do without my computers! I’m so addicted!
Thank the Lord for Best friends huh? lol
The reason it takes so long for them to repair it is because all the Geniuses are like 12 years old and they have to go to school and do homework and chores and stuff first. The Genius job is their hobby and what they do in their spare time. Last time I was in the Apple store I felt really, really, really, really old because all the people in the Mac T-shirts were babies. Geniuses yes, but babies!
Withdrawal is a slow and painful process.
I feel your pain, although you can rejoice that you’re dealing with the Apple Geniuses instead of the Best Buy Geeks.
Seriously.
I can totally relate about leaving your laptop at the Genius Bar. My 16 year old aspiring author daughter nearly cried when we had to take her beloved to be repaired for a cracked case or something. When the Genius told her it would be 48 hours she quickly turned back to me with huge eyes and said she didn’t think she could do it. I urged her that this was a one time thing and she would have it back sooner than she thought. Thankfully they called 3 hours later and we lovingly retrieved her best friend, the Ibook. My heart goes out to you.
Only 48 hours! It took two weeks to get my husbands laptop back from repairs once. Maybe we should be an Macbook next time! LOL
I pray for a speedy return of your Macbook and that you don’t have a complete breakdown first. I had to send my laptop off for a week and thought I’d have to be hospitalized.
They obviously had no idea they were dealing with the Jennifer Aniston of the virtual world. I would seriously question their creds as true computer geeks.
I, too, have a cracked keyboard on my macbook. AND, like you, I can’t fathom to be away from my love for more than a few hours, so I’ll just have to live with a poke-y keyboard. When my keys start popping off, I’ll consider taking it in.
Thanks for the early morning laughs!

I feel for you! Hubby and I took our boys camping over Thanksgiving – and SOMEHOW he managed to walk a total of 25 yards and destroy my laptop’s cooling fan.
Seriously? It was in a protective case, but that didn’t save it from my hubby…
Luckily my problem could be solved by stopping into a Best Buy and picking up a new cooling fan – not that there are many Best Buys out in the middle of camping land…
But I feel for you.
With how often computer stuff breaks, the Geniuses are kept busy. My best friend works at an Apple store and what with the defective optical drives, the cracking keyboards, and the iPod issues, they’re kept running.
Thankfully, our house has an abundance of computers and if one goes down there is still a system I can use.

Technology is confusing. ANd irritating when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to!
By the way, I wrote about something on my blog today that I would love to see your opinion about on a future fashion friday!!!
I hope the 48 hours goes quickly!!!
Hi Melanie,
I used to work at “that big computer chip manufacturer” and I think I can say your PC died from overheat… and it really can’t be revived. Sorry…. Those processor chips generate a lot of heat, more than high wattage light bulbs, so those fans are kinda important… Grin!
But happy to hear your Mac book will be back home soon.
Adrienne
My keyboard did the same thing! And they fixed mine in 2 hours! Why? Because I paid extra $$ to be a Procare customer and it bumps me to the front of the line for repairs. It pays off every year. Go get you one of them thar’ memberships, girl! Miss you! We must catch up soon!
It is a sad addiction we all have to our computers, isn’t it??
And what a blessing you have in Gulley to let you borrow her computer so you can share your tale with us, your faithful readers!! Oh, and why doesn’t Gulley have a blog to share her life with the interpeeps with???
Oh how we so appreciate your addiction
Wow…you mean you actually have geniuses NEAR you? I am in Maine. You know, that harsh frozen wasteland where locals would gladly trade a Mac for a half-eaten whoopie pie and a sip of Moxie. There are no repairs here, only prayers.
i’ve been out of the mac world for several years now–*sighs and hangs head in lament*–but i just saw a hot pink macbook that i may seriously need to have! i’ve been dying to get back into the mac world.
You crack me up. I’m so in the same boat with you. I admire your strength during this time of separation with your beloved macbook. You’re in my prayers.
The last time my hubbie’s MacBook Pro died, he almost had a conniption fit waiting for it to come home! I know how you feel.
“Here’s where I have to ask why it takes a group of self-proclaimed Geniuses two days to undo some screws and attach a new keyboard.”
All I have to say is that you are pretty brave to say those words while the “geniuses” still have your MacBook!
Well, that and I hope you get it back tomorrow!
Can I just say that I have a PC, a Compac laptop and a MacBook,,,,,I LIVE ALONE!! I lost power at my house a few months back during a storm and even though my laptop had battery power I could not get on the internet b/c the wireless thingy had no juice,,,,,I was lost.
I get your addiction.
So, what is the deal with the cracking MacBook keyboard? I’m not looking forward to this. : – (
Yeah, I would DIE. Hope you get your baby back soon!
We had the hot alarm on our computer. I honestly didn’t know that it was that big of a deal until our computer ate a worm this past spring. The neighbor was mortified that it ran so hot and that he had to re-boot and re-install everything with the case completely off because A FAN WAS OUT. “Didn’t you know?!” Why yes, I did know that the alarm went off, but I didn’t think that it was anything and I turned the sound off.
He looked at me like I had a third eye. Apparently, that alarm was a big deal. Who knew?
Add me to the list of cracked MacBook cases. My daughter had hers replaced about 8 months ago and now it is cracking again. Her friend’s cracked also,
I’m just thinking they should give us all the new unibody MacBooks!
Love your blog.
