Big Mama Blog

This post just put me to sleep while I wrote it

I watched the weather forecast on Tuesday night and listened to our local meteorologist as he predicted that rain and extremely cold temperatures would arrive around noon on Wednesday. So I went to bed with a master plan for Caroline and me to hit HEB before the front arrived. A trip to the grocery store wasn’t really part of our official Spring Break Agenda since I already went late last week, but P informed me that we were out of EVERYTHING.

If you’ve been reading here for any length of time then you know that by “EVERYTHING” what he meant was Nilla Wafers and Zantac 150. He suffers from acid reflux and a love of plain vanilla cookies.

Naturally, the weather man was wrong about the cold front’s noon arrival because it’s what weather men do. I don’t think they mean to lie; I think it’s just God’s way of letting them know they need to quit telling him his business. God’s in charge of the weather even if he doesn’t wear a cheap suit and point to a fancy computer satellite map.

By the time Caroline and I woke up, it was already windy, cold, and rainy. However, we went ahead and ventured out to HEB because what part of Zantac 150 and Nilla Wafer deprivation do you not understand? And, in all fairness, we were also out of Diet Coke and Sour Patch Kids. There was no way I was going to survive an entire day without either of those items. We’re not cavemen.

So we went to the store and then we came home.

Spring Break just keeps getting better and better.

I thought I’d share the rest of our day in pictures.

I cleaned out the refrigerator.

img_6173.jpg

I cleaned this light fixture that hadn’t been cleaned since we installed it almost six years ago.

img_6174.jpg

I cleaned the stove top until I could see my reflection.

img_6177.jpg

In the meantime, Caroline tried on every outfit in her closet, including her Wonder Woman Costume.

img_6167.jpg

She also spent a lot of time walking around with her new travel pillow around her neck.

img_6178.jpg

And then at some point, she took the camera from me and took some pictures of her own.

This is Bruiser.

img_6181.jpg

This is his ear.

img_6184.jpg

And this is the picture I started to color.

img_6194.jpg

I realized I was hanging on by a thin thread when she wanted to turn the page to do a connect-the-dots and I began complaining about how she never lets me finish my pictures.

And that pretty much sums up our day.

On the scale of Spring Break fun, it’s going to be pretty hard to top.

Any suggestions for something to do on a cold, rainy day besides play Sorry, otherwise known as the board game that is now dead to me?

    Love your light fixture!

I live in the UK and often the first words I hear upon waking are the dj on radio proclaiming…today’s forecast is gloomy. Gloomy! Makes me want to pull the pillow over my head. Please, please find another word.

Hmmm…I live in the land of rainy gray days so should be able to assist in the entertainment dept. but no, nothing comes to mind. My girls could spend hours cutting up magazines to make collages full of pretty shoes and pink stuff. Oh, and there’s always my favorite…how about playing the sleeping game? I agree yesterday will be hard to top but enjoy your day. I’ve read your blog before and I’m pretty sure you’re gonna come up with something : )

I used to take Ivory Snow powdered laundry soap add a little water and make soap sculptures with my kids.

I might have just outdated myself.

Oh, remember when Rocksinmydryer had everyone comment on where they lived and she plotted it out on the globe?

    Hope that helps, have fun.

I don’t have much faith in weathermen either. Whatever happens will happen when it is intended to happen and I don’t hold my breath. I quite frankly think they are in a Winter conspiracy with grocery stores because we are always under a Winter storm watch…….That’s what being a Hoosier is all about.

ha! Sounds like a fun day! :) Your refrigerator is fab and I love the light fixture too!

We must have had the same things on the brain…….we replaced our ceiling fans this week and I am embarrassed to admit that I mistook the the dust on top of them for a dead squirrel.

So that catapulted me into a must over due cleaning spree.

Here is something cute for you and Miss Caroline to make. I bet you would like them. We made these with our homeschooling group

    http://pridelandsmommy.blogspot.com/2009/02/this-little-light-of-mine.html

The thing was, I put too much pressure initially on my daughter to make it “match” our decor and got all OCD on her choice of placement of the tissue. When she reminded me that this was supposed to be time for children to be creative, I pouted and went and made a few of my own, which btw, look pretty cool when they are all lit on my freshly dusted bathroom shelf.

    Love your stove too…

    Peace

Is there any way you could convince P that the fish bite MUCH better in the cold and rain? I am thinking you could have Caroline packed up in rain gear in ten minutes or less, again.

Then the mall is nice and dry when you are alone and you won’t even care you just went there!

We also have a place called Monkey Joes that has indoor bouncy stuff. Yikes. But some people get desperate. A lot of people, actually.

You never cease to crack me up. I about lost it when you posted the picture of the dog’s ear, AND your comment about never getting to finish coloring your pictures. My niece (who I nanny for) does that to me ALL the time. And I always have an Inner Attitude about it, because secretly, what’s more fun than coloring? She’s lucky she’s cute. :)

oops, i forgot to comment on rainy day games. I’m the queen of making-fun-things up-on-the-spot-that-aren’t-really-fun-at-all. if nothing else fails, i blast the radio and we have dance parties in the kitchen (which, sidenote, actually requires energy). sometimes we bake, just because the kids love helping and then we have something sweet to munch on at night, but my favorite GAMES for rainy days are absolutely topped with ZINGO. If you haven’t heard of it, check it out on amazon immediately. It has saved my life on multiple occasions and is one of the few games that we never really tire of around here. WELL worth the fifteen bucks. I also sometimes will give Lindsay (who’s also in Kindergarten) a letter of the alphabet and a stack of magazines and have her peruse through to find as many things as she can to cut out and paste on a piece of paper. She comes up with some pretty dang funny stuff too. :)

I’ll let you know if I can think of anything else. I hope it helps!

    Michelle says:

I’m quickly becoming a comment whore, but I forgot to mention that the things she cuts out of the magazine should begin with the letter of the alphabet she’s given. okay, i’m done now. Really.

Oh, you are so funny!! I love reading your blog when I need a laugh.

~Something easy to do: tear up sheets of construction paper, or any colored paper. Make different mosaics with the pieces. All you need in paper and glue. This used to keep my kids busy for a while.

    ~Make popcorn and watch a movie under a tent(sheet draped over chairs)=)

    ~Bake some cookies or cupcakes

    Love your light fixture, btw!

For years, we never went anywhere for Spring Break…while I had to hear about all my friends going on cruises or skiing…

One of those years when we went “nowhere”…I took the kids on the Metro bus downtown. They had always asked about those buses and I thought that would be exciting. We parked at the nearest Park and Ride and got on with alot of dangerous looking thugs. It was a bumpy, slow go to downtown, where my husband met us and took us to lunch. The bad news? We had to take the bus home.

We still laugh about that….but hey!…they remember it!

    Linda Goossen says:

I can’t give you any ideas about what to do to keep Caroline occupied during spring break, because my 3 kids are all grown up, married, have their own kids, and I don’t have to think about spring break anymore.

However, I can tell you what has helped our ‘acid reflux’ which get worse with age. We eat 1/2 an apple every night. My husband even slices my 1/2. It works most of the time, and it has the added benefit of regularity!

Have fun with your little one this week.

    Dawn says:

Gosh, it will be hard to top that momentous fun but here’s what I do… I take all the cushions off the furniture, pile it on the floor along with bed pillows and soft blankets and then they dive off the coffee table. It’s good for hours of fabulous fun, and you might even get to experience a very memorable trip to the emergency room. Well hopefully not, we never have, but she would remember it for sure…

    Big Mama,
What happened to the York Peppermint Patties? I thought that those also were on your list of EVERYTHING that you run out of.

Also, I don’t know how adventurous you are, but on rainy days my parents would let me set up a tent in our living room. We would tie the chords (that usually go into stakes in the ground) to different pieces of furnature, and then put a box fan in the opening. It would blow the tent up like an air plane hanger. I would spend HOURS camping in the living room.

Mom did draw the line at roasting marshmellows over the gass stove. But we did microwave some.

  19. 19

I’m a little embarrassed to post this… But when I was Caroline’s age and bored with the coloring on a rainy day, a box of colored Kleenex, a roll of Scotch tape, and a nude Barbie doll could keep me busy for hours! I would make the fanciest ball gowns and evening gowns out of the Kleenex and tape. When I was bored with my creation I would cut it off and create a whole new one. The cool thing nowadays, Caroline could take a digital pic of her fab Project Runway design before tearing it to shreds.

So yes, being out of “everything” used to mean Kleenex and Scotch tape.

wow lots of good ideas here. ..
i say go to the beach.
grab the suntan lotion, (the nice beachy smelling kind) lube up, put on your bikini, and watch giget movies or fun girly movies.
or have a cruise-style spa day.
soak your feet, lotion the legs, paint toenails and put cucumber slices (or vanilla wafers)on your eyes. take turns papmering each other. then go to the refrigerater and put everything on the counter and pretend it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet.
i love the idea of the scotch tape and kleenex.
you could even take watercolors, paint the kleenex (or coffee filters, or tissue paper) let it dry and then you can make creations. make a runway out of construction paper or whatever, and have a barbie project runway. take photos like you are at the show, and practice taking arty shots.
make beads out of magazine paper. cut into strips, use mod podge or white glue and roll them up over a toothpick. let em dry and then you can string them together to make some cool jewelry. (there’s probably directions online)
get out some paper and make some greeting cards for the sick kids on make a child smile (www.makeachildsmile.org/).
    volunteer at a soup kitchen
make shamrock cookies and deliver them to a nursing home. or to a waiting room at the local hospital day surgery center.
i hope you have a fantastic spring break!

A good rainy day activity is to go indoor rock climbing. They have a ton of “small walls” so yall to practice on and then you can obviously be belayed by an employee on the larger ones. I feel like it would be a good mother/daughter activity because you would have fun too! I went when I was younger and it was so much fun. I still love going.

And….maybe she could wear her Wonder Woman costume too :)

  27. 27

I thought for sure you were going to say that P was out of York Peppermint Patties. When you cleaned your cooktop and saw your reflection did you see Mr. Clean behind you?
We have spring break next week and will actually be going to San Antonio for a couple of days. I hope this cool weather warms up by then. Fiesta Texas is not fun in the cold!

  28. 28
    Dena says:

Since we were usually snowbound when my kids were little, we did all kinds of artsy/craftsy things. Gluing popcorn on to a paper plate to make a bird feeder wreath, things like that. If you do a search for crafts for a specific age, you will be amazed at what you can find – cheap. :)

  29. 29

I think you need to take the pressure off yourself and involve some other kids. I would suggest letting her invite a friend over for the afternoon. I mean it is kinda wrong to keep all this “fun” just between you and Caroline.
Another thing I thought of is a scavenger hunt in the house. You could list colors or shapes and have her find something in the house for each one. Or you could hide an item in the house and have her find it. I know that is probably more “fun” than you can stand!

Have a great rest of the week!

I do think this is the first time I’ve seen someone comment on “regularity” on a blog. That’s just plain funny.

I guess the apple is a good idea for reflux. My idea for todays fun is to either…1. drive to Houston for the rodeo (I have a post (www.i-get-to.blogspot.com)about our day there on Monday when my child asked “what exactly kind of animal is that?” when we were looking at a cow (GOT to get her to the country more!). If it’s too cold and ambitious to come to Houston, I’d rent movies (especially if you have the Red Box there…can’t beat those $1 prices and they have some pretty good selections.) Or, last thought….have her make a scrapbook from the pictures she has taken from Spring Break (dog ear will make a great page)…I mean seriously, with all the fun you are having, it should make for a great book. :)

Rainy days are also a good time to go see a movie. I realize I am no help but my two boys are grown and I am finding I have a lot of time on my hands. lol

What’s wrong with wanting to finish pictures? Huh?

My grandmother has always been crafty (cheap crafy, but fun crafty) and I remember her coming up with all kinds of ideas for us to do while at her house when we couldn’t go outside.

One thing she would do was to tie a sewing needled to a long piece of string and set out a big bucket of colorful buttons (my grandmother loved to sew) and we would string those buttons and make beautiful necklaces.

Another thing, she would give us all her magazines & catalogs and a pair of scissors and we would ‘set up’ our own houses. We would cut out the furniture we wanted for the house, clothes, stoves, cars, etc.

Hope the rest of your Spring Break is a blast! (How could it not be with Sour Patch Kids?!?)

  45. 45

I was thinking a tent and then read through the comments and realized others were thinking the same thing. A tent in the living room is a ton o’ fun….so much fun we made one in our living room in college during exams and thought it was the coolest thing ever – I think it is because we were delirious due to the lack o’ sleep. So, just keep Caroline up a few nights in a row, make the tent and she will think it is incredible! :)

  46. 46

Love the idea of the fashion designer with scotch tape and kleenex. Sounds like fun! Or she could design a toilet paper dress for herself or you (a la bridal showers).

A fort with cushions and blankets is always fun.

Roast marshmallow peeps over a candle flame?

    How about a fashion collage…complete w/commentary?

And homemade playdough is always a winner.

Here’s a new one: make shaving cream pictures! Put construction paper on the table, add a sploosh of shaving cream & make pictures with it. Or, for even more fun, mix up a batch of instant (chocolate, of course) pudding & use that to make pictures. You can totally lick your fingers (oh, Caroline can, I mean) and still throw the papers away when you’re done.

I haven’t seen anything about a tea party! Have a couple of friends over, get all dolled up (hats are required), and have a tea party with real tea cups, cookies, best behavior, pinkies extended, and everything! My kids have/had a dress up chest which had, among other things, old prom dresses. The girls loved to dress up in them, clomp around in too-big shoes, and act all grown up. They would even dress us the dog in a coat & tie & call HER “Mr. Gracie.”

    There was nothing better!

You got any record albums still hanging around?

But, I also have 2 boys (ages 4 & 2) so that may not be up to snuff for Miss Caroline (no pink or wonder woman here)…I do have to say, DH and I are headed on vacation this next week (our 1st since our honeymoon without the kids) and I’m not sure what I’m going to do without my daily dose of laughter from you…I love checking in from time to time to remind myself that I am not alone on this Mommy Rollercoaster and that there are other Moms out there that survive on Diet Coke and Sour Patch kids like me!!!

Oh, you have a cattle dog! Two of our three dogs are cattle dog mixes. They are the greatest. Too smart for their own good!

I have been in san antonio for the past 5 days for a real estate convention! As a native Texan I assumed the usual san antonio weather. HOT and HUMID! and that’s what I got until yesterday! GRRRR~ You are correct. The weather man was wrong! My flip flops were not very warm. :(

When I was little and the weather was crappy, I would put on my bathing suit, pull out a towel and a beach umbrella and would make myself an indoor picnic.

It’s true: When it comes to figuring out entertainment, early spring breaks are just a series of really bad snow days.

You are killing me!!! This spring break totally cracks me up. Ours is next week. I can’t wait to see what fun we’ll not be having. We are going to Nashvegas for a few days. I’ll see Brandi Wilson at church on Sunday and I’ll sport a scarf ok?

    Hugs,

I’m thinkin’ i’m gonna need to see a picture of that couch (in the picture with Caroline and her travel pillow)…. did i see leopard pillows?

I’m more of a decorating freak than a Fashion freak. So if this totally catches you offguard- simply ignore!

    haha!!!

Now i’m off to visit all these links these wonderful people provided for ‘fun activities on rainy cold days’.

Your Spring Break is almost over… my began today at 3:20. What will i do with the time?

OK.. too many sites to even think about. http://www.familyfun.go.com probably has enough to keep you busy for the whole, entire summer, not just spring break. I’m thinkin’ you guys need to make a Leprechaun catcher, since St. Paddy’s Day is coming up. Who wouldn’t love the chance to get their own personal stash of gold? Y’all have fun… maybe even a little more than you’ve already had… just a little…

Whoa dude! You need to come live in Oregon for a while. You’re “cold and rainy” is our hottest August day.

Sounds like a relaly fun day! But I have to be honest I’m concerned about your baked goods being in the fridge. It makes them go stale!
For the love of baked goods, get a bread box woman!

We love Pump it Up. Looks like you have 2 locations in your area. Check for “pop in playtime” times. Worth every penny! We also have a place called Artsports which is a trampoline gym. Looks like it’s local, but I googled San Antonio and you seem to have something similar- http://www.powerhousetntgymnastics.com/. Bummer is they don’t seem to have open gym until Saturday… Good luck!

Use shaving cream to finger paint in and clean table top at the same time. Make a tent with a blanket and chairs, then go inside and read with a flashlight. Use colored minature marshmallows and glue to make a rainbow on paper. Dance! Get on the computer and play games on starfall.com (It’s awesome) Cut pictures out of magazines and make posters/collages.Make a no bake cookie recipe together.

Oh and the weather. Yeah, it’s spring break for me and I had BIG plans for a garage sale(which is still on,ugh) and yard work(not happening)but did not factor in that last weeks beautiful 60 degree weather would turn into this weeks grey, rainy and cold(30′s) weather.STINKS!

My kids used to like to play a hiding game. We’d choose something fairly small, say an action figure or a small animal and then take turns hiding it. The only clues were “hot” or “cold” It kept them busy for some time on cold rainy days.

Another favorite was the craft cupboard which had all sorts of markers and paints and tissue paper, popsicle sticks (because goodness knows you can make just about anything out of them) etc. Get a good crafting book and stock a cupboard or box.

Here’s an activity: please take photos of the inside of your car (as is) and send them to me. Or maybe have your daughter take the photos. I am having a competition. And the prizes are incredible. If you are an OCDer on the car you might not be eligible for the competition. And if you win, maybe you will get some new, cool, exciting things to play with.

I’m a college student at Baylor and this week was our Spring Break too…so in order to really enjoy it my friends and I decided to pack up and head to South Padre…well when we got it here it had rained all day and now has not gotten above 58 degrees! So much for being at the beach! I would love to have a Snuggie/Slanket right now…I might actually stay warm!
