Thanks for reposting this. Loved reading it in November and again tonight. We're in the process of bringing home a sweet 7 year old boy from Ethiopia. I can't wait to go on a mission of my own. :-) Sweet blessings, Amy in OR

Melanie, thank you for this post. I sponsor a child through another organization and I needed to read your words to remember to reach out to him more often, and frankly, with more urgency.

I was so moved by this that I signed up to sponsor two children! I recently found a renter for my condo which hasn't sold, so to thank God for that blessing I wanted to give something back. I am sponsoring a boy and a girl. Thanks for inspiring me!

Mel, I will also be considering becoming a sponsor. Our children have so much and the poor children in your pictures are so sad. We must let them know we love them and most of all that Jesus loves them.

I'm so glad that you decided to re-post this one during your break, as I'd never read it before. It is phenomenally inspirational.

Wow. I knew you went to the DR with Compassion, but I had not yet taken the time to read about it. What a blessing.

I have never commented on your blog before but have followed you for months. This really got to me! I have sponsored children through Compassion for over 20 years now and have lived in other countries and have seen first-hand what you are talking about. However, I am ashamed to say I have not taken the time to write to my child for a long time. Thank you for encouraging me to do that today and reminding me what joy/hope/encouragement it can bring to a child that is hurting. I read your post with tears falling and a heart that aches and also feeling guilt for being so blessed. It's a fine line to try to walk. Again, thank you! I needed this today more than I myself even realized.

My husband has been challenging me lately with some of Francis Chan's material about living radically for Jesus...what if we really did what the Bible said to do? What if we followed the literal words of Christ (take care of the widows of the orphans, give to charity, sell your possessions). I feel like Compassion is a great way to do just that! I am so excited to look into it more.

Amen for this post. I also read about Ree's family on Pioneer Woman.

Those people touch my heart - I have read about the Compassion Project and it is a deep desire in my heart to one day be part of it. I've traveled quite a bit - and a couple of years ago to Egypt.. when you see other cultures living like that - and usually living Happily... it's just mind blowing, and eye opening and touches your heart like nothing else can.

Excellent post. I'm gonna go read it and look at the pictures again :)
