Big Mama Blog

Somewhere Ronald McDonald is crying

Last week, Caroline asked me if I’d please come eat lunch with her at school.

Oh sure, it sounds sweet and at the beginning of the school year it made my heart so happy to think that my baby still wanted to eat lunch with her mama, but now I know the truth. She just needs someone to cart some food up to the school so she can sit on stage and practice her prom queen wave.

Fortunately for her, a mother’s love knows no bounds so I am happy to be that person.

I asked her what she wanted me to bring for lunch:

“Caroline, do you want Sonic or a Happy Meal?” (I could already taste the tots and Cherry Limeade)

“I want sushi.”

“Sushi?”

“Yes. I’d like a California Roll and some edamame. Please don’t forget my chopsticks.”

Well, sure.

Because what kid would want a good old American cheeseburger with a side of tots when they can have sushi instead?

My daughter has been on a “chicken around the world” kick. By that I mean we’ve eaten from McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, KFC, McDonald’s (again) and chicken at home. Last night as I was making dinner, she asked if we could have “bone chicken.” Since she has started growing a beak and sprouting feathers, I decided maybe we ought to give the chicken a rest!

What IS it with kids these days? My boy loves a good Happy Meal (toy), but his favorite place to go for a sit down meal is a Thai restaurant near his school. For sushi. With chopsticks. What kind of monsters are we creating?

I thought my eight-year-old was the only child who wanted sushi in their school lunch! Bet they would be friends if they met in real life!!

Tell Caroline thanks from me. She totally gave me an idea for a hospital lunch delivery. Since I’ve been preggo I haven’t had ANY sushi :( so now I think I’ll have my hubby go and get me some after I’ve had the baby.(we’re t-minus 5 weeks) Mmmmm!

Good job teaching her to eat things other than mac and cheese!

That’s right, at least she has a palate for things other than pb&j, mac & cheese, hot dogs and a happy meal. Well done, mama!

i knew i liked caroline…she’s a girl after my own heart. i think i see some sushi in my near future too! odd craving for 6:45 in the morning.

  12. 12
    Erica says:

People think that my boys have sophisticated palates by requesting sushi at ages 12 & 15. But at 6? Wow!

Personally, I would have gone for the cherry limeade. Now I really want one.

  13. 13
    Eileen says:

Caroline and my daughter would get along like a house on fire. Her Kindergarten principal was flabbergasted the first time she brought Sushi to lunch.

    rachel says:

What?! that’s hilarious! I would love that lunch. In fact, now that I’ve seen it, I’m gonna crave it until i get it. Thanks. :) But what 8 yr old likes sushi?! Apparently yours!

    Bonni says:

Sushi, the wave,…..and I love the pics of the hair! thanks for the laughs!

  16. 16
    Marissa says:

I am speechless!! ha! I was a teacher up until a few years ago, and parents weren’t allowed to bring outside food like that. This is the school to be at!!

  17. 17

Actually, over at Hannah and Lily, Lily (who is three) just went yesterday and picked out “squishy” in the store. She is a tiny peanut of a thing and ate 9 California rolls. But those girls can have mine. We don’t have Sonic, but we do have a drive-in burger joint to die for. I’ll take that, thank you!

  18. 18
    Kelley says:

Oh Lord. Next year she’ll be wanting some filet mignon or lobster tails delivered! I just can’t stomach anything from McDonald’s except for chicken nuggets and fries anymore, but I too love me some sushi. She’s cute as a bug for sure!

  19. 19

I have not said it quite some time, probably since the fall when we all were in San Antonio, but I think my Olivia and your Caroline share a room in Pre-womb heaven. Those two are so similiar…and hilarious.

  20. 20
    Abbie says:

Did you know you can buy sushi “Lunchables”? I didn’t until a couple years ago when I worked at an elementary school outside of Chicago (north shore actually) and kids would bring this prepackaged – specifically for kids – sushi meals for lunch! Crazy. Why don’t they sell those in Kansas?

  21. 21
    Mel says:

Might explain why Caroline only eats half a chicken nugget. I have never had sushi, but I’m sure it is better than food from the school cafeteria. Yuck! I took a cheese sandwich every day to school growing up.

  22. 22

I love when my kids choose exotic foods! It’s awesome to have a mature palate, but I totally get your disappointment too. One of the finest perks of having kids is getting to eat all those good ole American classics (and using your kids as your excuse): burgers, fries, frosties, slushies, icees, corndogs…..the list goes on and on!

  23. 23

    YUM!! That looks sooooo good!

Have I told you lately that you’re one of my favorite parts of the morning?

  24. 24
    Michelle says:

What a celebration! It could have almost been her half birthday celebration!

  25. 25

Sushi and being on stage- it doesn’t get much better than that!

  26. 26
    Angela says:

Sigh. My three-year-old would have requested birthday cake and those peanut butter Ritz sandwich crackers. I hate picky eaters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. 27
    Keyona says:

    She’s already high class!! :o )

  28. 28

Are you sure she isn’t my child? That is my favorite lunch too!!!

  31. 31
    Natalie says:

Caronline is much like her Mom I think. Very entertaining :) Thanks for brightening my morning with a smile. I have only tried Sushi once and didn’t care for it but for some reason seeing that a 6 year old enjoys it makes me wanna try it one more time :)

  32. 32
    Lindsey says:

I am so impressed that Caroline likes sushi already! I have still am not brave enough to try it. Maybe she will be my inspiration…or maybe I will just stick to chicken, my meat of choice. :)

  33. 33

That is awesome. My daughters love edamame, but gag at the thought of sushi. Weirdos.
Our school doesn’t allow McDonalds (or any fast food at all). They are actually called a “sugar free school.” We aren’t allowed to bring anything for parties OR send in a lunch box any food that has sugar as the 1st or 2nd ingredient. They aren’t too strict on the lunch box rule (I have been able to sneak in a Little Debbie or 2 this year) but are the POLICE when it comes to party food. The principal stands at the front door on party days and checks what comes in. Mary Emma’s birthday is Monday, and instead of bringing cupcakes to school for her class, we’re taking sugar free popsicles. PAR-TAY.
What is the world coming to when McD’s isn’t allowed on occasion in a school cafeteria? If nothing else, it makes all the other kids wish their mom was as cool as the McD wielding mom.

    Amy says:

Caroline would get along perfectly with my boy. He has requested that I bring him sushi for lunch on more than one occasion. Eel is his favorite.

  36. 36
    Becca Mae says:

My 6 year old son loves sushi too. In fact he will choose anything healthy over McD’s. I think I am the only mother that complains because her kids won’t eat junk food. He will pitch a fit if I pass the brussel sprouts in the produce department. What kind of kid am I raising?!

  37. 37
    Kristyn says:

That is awesome! :) It also made me think of Claire’s lunch in “The Breakfast Club”. ;)

We eat a lot of ground beef at our house because my dad raises beef cattle and I get it for free. I had made something for supper with ground beef that my 6 year old refused to eat because she didn’t like the meat. And then the next day turns around and devours a McD’s hamburger like it is manna from heaven. “This is the best hamburger EVER!” Ack!

  38. 38
    Dee says:

This made me laugh out loud. I hate sushi. My kids love it. I call it “bait.” They know they will only get it when their uncle is in town. He corrupted them. I want him to hurry up and have kids so I can send them something like, oh, I dunno, a DRUM KIT??!!! [evil laugh...]

  39. 39
    Jessica says:

Hey, I’m with Caroline. Sushi is the one food I miss when I’m pregnant! If it makes you feel better, my dietician friend packs edamame in her 5 year old’s lunch most days.

    Lauren Kelly says:

She is sooooooooooooo a girl after my own heart!!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE sushi and the edamame!!!!! haha!!! Too funny!!

    Molly Pearce says:

HAHAHAAHAHAHAH!!!!! My baby sister is the same way, only when I go to eat lunch with her she wants to sit across from her and not beside. Oh how dare I sit beside my sweet baby sister and embarass her with hugs and kisses. Love the picture of Caroline just nonshalauntly (I think I mispelled that) eating her sushi, too funny. By the way what did you eat?

    Cydney says:

That is too funny. I think it has something to do with the fact that kids are maturing faster these days.

    hahha

  57. 57
    Andi says:

Dang, now I have to wait 48 hours until I’m in a civilized larger town where sushi available. 75 miles to the nearest sushi spot=anxiety. Luckily my girls will both wholeheartedly agree to sushi when we go 8th grade graduation dress shopping Saturday. My baby is 7 & likes sushi too! We have a friend who’s daughter will eat nothing that is green and also thinks ground beef is disgusting. Very limited diet. Also she will not eat soup. Who doesn’t eat soup??

  59. 59
    Leslie says:

Oh, that’s a child after my own heart. Smart girl to remind you about the chopsticks. My husband sometimes forgets. But just wait until she gets bored with the California rolls and goes for the expensive stuff.

  60. 60
    Chelsea says:

Your daughter is 50 times more sophisticated that I am. For lunch I’m having a turkey sandwich and jello salad. Oh dear. I worry for my future children.

  61. 61
    kimberly says:

too precious! relish in the moment that she wants you to come sit with her at lunch, even if it’s just to deliver sushi trays….in the blink of an eye she’ll be asking you to drop her off at the corner so she can walk the last block alone!! :)

  62. 62
    Jenny Lynn says:

    That is HILARIOUS!!

I hope my kid loves Sushi as much as I do!!!

  63. 63

My husband HATES sushi…. and I could eat it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. of the week! My daughter is just starting to like it, so hopefully we will be able to out number him soon!

  64. 64
    Amanda May says:

    And a bottle of water?

How did you do that? Seriously…I don’t understand!!

  66. 66
    GinnyLou says:

Ok, I just have to know…does she actually EAT the sushi?? My little guy is notorious for requesting something (sometimes weird like lime juice, sometimes normal like chicken nuggets) and then turning up his nose once it arrives. My luck I’d show up with the sushi and he’d throw a fit because I was supposed to know he meant cheerios!

I’ve been reading your blog faithfully for a while, but never commented. But I have to comment on this post. She is a child after my own heart. I can’t wait for the day that I hear my little girl say “Mommy, I want sushi!!!” Then we will outnumber Daddy on what’s for dinner!

    Kristen says:

She’d fit in well over here in Okinawa. I can’t get either one of my kids to eat sushi. I have to send my son’s lunch everyday because he doesn’t want the Japanese hot lunch. Maybe Caroline could teach him a thing or two. :)

  81. 81
    Trish says:

Caroline is so adorable. My husband has been taking our granddaughter a Subway personal pizza every Friday. She’s a princess and I somehow feel Caroline is from the same club.

  82. 82

My 9 year old Caterpillar, B10, would eat Sushi for every meal if I let him. His favorite is squid…

I think it’s pretty awesome that I can take my kids to just about any type of resturant and they can find SOMETHING to eat. My favorite part is when we go somewhere with their friends (like a pizza place) and they ask for salad before their pizza. :D (It’s those little things that make me feel like I’m doing something right.)

  83. 83
    Tasha says:

Okay,so when I read that she wanted sushi I thought she was probably joking. Then I scrolled down and saw the picture.I about died! That is just histarical!

  84. 84
    Pam says:

My grandaughter started asking to go to
the “rice mall” when she was three…there
was an Asian rest. in the food court and that is what she wanted to eat.

  85. 85

Oh, but Big Mama, I hold YOU entirely responsible for this, because no five year old at my house ever even knew what shushi WAS!!!! YOU must have “exposed” her to this particular brand of culture or she would have NO IDEA what either a California roll nor an edamame was. (IS an adamame an adamame or is it some adamame – - – obviously I am cultureless.)

  86. 86

    What? How old is she??

I’d take the fries and limeaide.

Truth be told, I still can’t do sushi. I’m a baby that way.

Wow!! I am 56 and I have never eaten sushi. And I don’t even know what that other thing is. But actually it sounds more nutritious than a Happy Meal. I can’t stomach McDonald’s or Burger King either. lol
    Seriously Caroline is a hoot!

    Hugs,
