A list of ten things minus two

May 15, 2009

I know I said I was taking a break from Fashion Friday for the summer and I am, I really am. The question portion of Fashion Friday is officially on summer vacation. However, I had some free time this week and spent some of that time venturing into various stores, which led me to find some cute things that I feel compelled to share with the group.

In fact, I believe I was in Banana Republic (where all my best ideas have always been born) when I decided it would be fun to compile a list of my top ten finds of the week. Unfortunately, there are two flaws with this plan. First, some of the things I found aren’t online, including a darling cotton navy and white striped dress that has captured my heart and is still calling to me from the store where I left it. Second, I’m not sure I actually have a list of ten things, it may be more like seven or five.

We’ll just see where it goes and how long I can make myself wait to watch the season finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” and part two of the “Real Housewives of New York” reunion special. It’s not like the DVR is going to watch that stuff for me.

Here’s what I found this week. (Note to P, I didn’t actually BUY anything. I just looked. Because I am exercising self-control)

(Speaking of exercising, I’m on Level 2 of The Shred. I can no longer remember what day I’m on because I skipped various days due to a raging case of PMS. As far as results, my arms are definitely more toned which is such a relief because I’m always so insecure about how my arms look in a bathing suit.)

1. Summer floral skirt

Y’all know I’m a fan of the summer skirt and I think this one is really cute, especially now that it’s on sale because Gap is high if they think that skirt was worth the original $44.50 price.

2. Linen cargo bermuda shorts

I tried these on and couldn’t commit, but I keep thinking about them because they were very lightweight and would probably be a welcome addition to my wardrobe come July when I’m wishing I lived in North Dakota.

3. Halter maxi dress

I hope the link works because Banana won’t let me link to the specific dress because it’s already sold out and I’m not surprised. When I saw it in the window of the store, I immediately parked and went in to get a better look because I thought I could wear it to a wedding this weekend and my twenty-year reunion later this summer.

However, what the picture doesn’t show is that the back of the dress does some tricky kind of thing that basically allows for no sort of undergarment to be worn. But apparently someone has figured out a way to make it work because the dress is SOLD OUT. Are these people gluing some sort of support device directly to their bodies? If you think I’m attending my twenty-year high school reunion with only on a super-glued cup standing between me and public humiliation, then you’re crazy.

4. Embroidered tunic

I really liked this even before I knew they called that color “Wasabi Green”, which just makes me like it that much more.

5. ABK Couture bags

A friend from elementary school makes these gorgeous tote bags and I discovered them last week. I am totally eyeing one of them to be my new laptop bag.

6. Double Mocha Jacket

I didn’t actually see this in person, but found it online when I did my weekly search through all of Anthropologie’s sale items. I am a fan.

7. Good jeans

I have no link for this, but Steinmart had 7 jeans and Lucky jeans in stock this week for substantially less than what you’d pay at the fancy department store.

8. Yellow Box Zebra flip-flops

There are no words for the cuteness.

It turns out I only had eight things, but like the old saying goes better eight than nothing.

(By “old saying” I mean three minutes old because I just made it up)

Y’all have a great Friday.

OK, so *high five* on the Shredfest results! I too am on that horrific level (be warned…..Level Three is just.plain.wrong.)My arms are not feeling as flabby….I guess we can chalk to up to 50% of that Level 2 being in that plank position. Who does jumping jacks horizontally?!?!? Then she expects us to keep our arms back up with weights for some other form of torture…..neat.

Two other things…..I laughed out loud with your “Gap is high” comment…..just made me remember how often I used to say that…

…..and I just LOVE that Wasibi tunic….that is totally me. I would like to say that I am actually a little thankful that Fashion Friday will be on a hiatus…..it will give me chance to get my Gap card balance down to two digits.

Have a great weekend!

Gotta say I’m loving the new color scheme! Rock it Mama!!

4 jenngetts May 15, 2009 at 6:21 am

i’m loving the tunic!!

btw….what did you think of grey’s??

i’ll be looking for your post about it!!

very interesting!

5 Rhonda May 15, 2009 at 6:21 am

The tunic is great. Good for you on level 2! P must be impressed. thanks for taking the time to shop for us. Some of us (and by that I mean me) are in desparate need:) I went yesterday & took one of my boys.He was the thumbs up or down vote because, sadly, his fashion sense is better than mine. Have a great weekend.

Love the summery color scheme!

7 Mel May 15, 2009 at 8:00 am

Yes, loving the new color scheme. The handbags are very pretty, but since I still have a baby, I may have to wait on them. Was it you who said you chose a purse on absorbing of things spilled like formula and apple juice?

Such greatness! I am on the search for a maxi dress and found this one:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3010278/0~2376776~2374327~2374331~6014178?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6014178&P=14

But the $$ tag is slightly making me ill. The search shall continue.

You encouraged me to order The Shred. It came on Tuesday but I have yet to even remove the plastic due to 1)raging case of PMS and 2)raging headache associated w/the aforementioned “case.” I suppose when I get around to it I’ll have some toned up arms too…which would be good since I have a wedding to attend quite soon!

10 Lindsey May 15, 2009 at 8:10 am

love the new summer color scheme!

level 2 is a beast. i think i am going to stay in level 2 for a while…as much as i thoroughly despise the plank position. however, i will say that everytime my husband walks through the room while i am doing the shred he claims there is no way he would make it until the end. that is of course after he has come in from running 3 1/2 miles (which i could NEVER do) so i guess we are even!

11 Amanda @ Serenity Now May 15, 2009 at 8:38 am

Just be prepared for some major shockers on Grey’s Anatomy…that’s all I’m sayin.’ ;)

12 rrmama May 15, 2009 at 8:57 am

Yellowbox flip flops rock! I have so many pairs my husband says I can open my own store. What did you think of part 2 of Real Housewives NY. I think Jill is the most classiest, is that even a word, of all of them and Ramona… I would like to throw her and her crazy eyes under a bus! She drives me nuts.

13 Annie May 15, 2009 at 8:58 am

Thanks for all your links. These days, I’m fashion-challenged, and being 25 weeks pregnant isn’t helping. Plus, we’re on Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, so I’m not buying anything for a while. But… did it seem odd to you: it looks to me like the Anthropologie jacket is lined everywhere but the bust??

14 Bev May 15, 2009 at 9:02 am

Love the new fun template – very springy. And I need to run buy new jeans while I’m more than normal skinny from all the stress of staging a house. Not missing that ten lbs and wanting to hurry and buy some jeans to wear til I gain them back…..

15 Hannah May 15, 2009 at 9:26 am

I have to say that I went to Banana Republic on Wednesday armed with my 25% off coupon and partially spent gift certificate specifically to purchase that halter dress to which you are referring. Only to find in great disappointment that the only size they had remaining would fit three of me. Should we send in protest postcards?

16 Kristen May 15, 2009 at 9:27 am

You must sit down right now and watch the 2nd part of the HONYC. I’m now thoroughly and completely addicted. I’ve got to go back and watch the first season.

17 txmomx6 May 15, 2009 at 9:44 am

Thanks for the tip on the jeans at Steinmart! I hope ours has them!!
Every woman needs a good pair of jeans!!
Oh, and love the bags, too!!

I LOVE your new blog colors!

And the wasabi shirt is my favorite. I wonder why they called the double mocha a jacket? It totally looked like a short-sleeved shirt to me… Times and words, they are a-changin’

Prayed for you this morning, friend!

19 Amy May 15, 2009 at 10:01 am

Love! The bright summer colors on the blog and those flowers just pop! I was reading through a Woman’s Day magazine yesterday while the kids were at the dentist and listen to this fun summery OPI polish color. You ready? Sand in my Suit. They weren’t really thinking how uncomfortable the name sounds, but the color was beautiful. I never wear polish on my fingernails, just the toes. But this one? I just might give it a try this summer.

20 Jennifer May 15, 2009 at 10:09 am

Wasn’t part 2 of the RHNY reunion just madness. Normally all of that bickering drives me crazy but those girls are just so koo-koo that I love it!

That mocha jacket is to die for!!

21 Kathy May 15, 2009 at 10:23 am

OMG — Grey’s Anatomy was just the best!! The second hour is much better than the first and there’s a major cliffhanger.

I missed part two of the housewives reunion because I was watching GA. I’ve got it on DVR and can’t wait to see some more bickering.

22 NancysLostandFound May 15, 2009 at 10:55 am

Me too. Love the summer blog colors, that is. So, so, cheery!

23 Tiffany @ Paging Doctor Mommy May 15, 2009 at 11:10 am

Love the blog color makeover!

Be prepared to feel the need to watch Grey’s at least TWICE!

24 Paula May 15, 2009 at 11:24 am

On level 2 of 30 Day Shred. Anyone elses back hurt from it??

25 LeAnn May 15, 2009 at 11:27 am

I know of your love for summer skirts and in theory I’m there with you, however, I have a dilemma. Slip or no slip? I don’t like to see a woman’s silhouette when she has the sun behind her. Then there is the problem when I sweat and have been sitting, the skirt sticks to me in all the wrong places. OR the wind kicks up and I have a potential Marilyn Monroe blown up skirt moment! What to do? What to do? Maybe it’s just me?

26 Rachel May 15, 2009 at 11:41 am

No, don’t tell me! I also have Greys and Housewives on DVR, calling my name!

27 Rachel May 15, 2009 at 11:41 am

And I love the summer BlogLift!

28 Sandy May 15, 2009 at 11:44 am

I’m on day 6 of The Shred-level 1. I just thought I was in good shape. OH MY WORD!! I previewed level 2…it scares me a little…OK a lot!

29 Natalie May 15, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Loving the new background! :)

30 JudiMom May 15, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Way back in the day…(1967) my mom made me two backless dresses. One for Xmas ball and one for prom. We made a bra that was regular in the front but once it got under my armpit it went straight down to my waist (elastic) and then contiued to hook in the back at my waist. The over the shoulder straps kinda went over the shoulder and then angled to hit the drop down thingy and on to below my waist. It worked fine… i felt very normal.. i have worn those pasties things and they were not for me. I think we got the idea for the bra from some expensive place and just made it ourselves… you might try to find something like that if you ever need to again. I read you in the mornings just to laugh… don’t stop writting.

31 Nichole May 15, 2009 at 2:22 pm

All I’m going to say about dresses that don’t allow for undergarments is duct tape. I’m well endowed and it works wonders!

32 Alison May 15, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Great list! I love the skirt and the tunic. Oh, and I love Anthropologie so much, I would marry it if I could.

33 Amy S. May 15, 2009 at 2:45 pm

I love your blog! It is one of my favorites! You are too funny and Fashion Friday has been very informative. You are my source for fashion.
We visited San Antonio for the first time in Feb. and had a great time. The Riverwalk area is beautiful. We enjoyed our visit before it got hot!

34 MooBeeMa May 15, 2009 at 3:52 pm

I’m starting to get inspired to try The Shred. Are we going to get to see a photo of your “right to bare arms?”

35 Stephanie(ocean mommy) May 15, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Love your new colors here!! Very cute. :)

And that tunic….I’m fixing to tell the man that he bought that for me. :)

Have a great weekend!

“…because Gap is high if they think that skirt was worth the original $44.50 price.”
Yes, I laughed right out loud sitting here all by myself reading that. I’m still laughing.
Cute stuff! I think that skirt is my favorite thing on your list. Although the wasabi green tunic is pretty dang cute.

37 sweethomealagirl May 15, 2009 at 11:14 pm

“especially now that it’s on sale because Gap is high if they think that skirt was worth the original $44.50 price”

That comment just made me LAUGH. I heart you :) (and that skirt!)

38 Musingwoman May 16, 2009 at 8:06 am

You are singing my tune. I’ve got to do some shopping myself for Blogher. My goal? Find two days worth of clothes that at least make it appear my wardrobe consists of more than outfits for work and sweat pants for home.

39 Teresa May 16, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I loved that skirt from the Gap so much that I ordered one online today. And I’m glad I procrastinated a few days because I got a 25% card in the mail yesterday for Gap. I was also able to find a few other things to throw in the shopping cart. This online shopping thing might be a little addictive. But, that’s what I must resort to as I don’t do much shopping with a 3 year old and a 1 year old in tow.

And I started the Shred tonight. I wimped out and did everything without the weights. And it was still hard.

40 Courtney May 16, 2009 at 9:59 pm

I started The Shred the day you first mentioned it on your blog. I ran out that night and bought it.

I’ve been faithful everyday, and I’ve worked up to Level 3. But yikes, I am wondering what more I have to do to see results. I don’t really need to lose weight, but I am looking to tone. So far I have not noticed any changes.

But my muscles are hurting so I know something is going on.

Oh, well. Maybe I need to stop looking in the mirror. Then six months from now, I’ll take a peek and perhaps I’ll be amazed by all the muscles that have miraculously appeared. :)

Ooooh! Look at your bright springy colors! LOVE!! :-) The link to the maxi dress didn’t work but I’m pretty sure I know the one of which you speak. I have been drawn to it as well, but the undergarment issue is a deal breaker.

And I LOVE those flip flops.

The third link doesn’t link directly to the dress, just the website.
