Big Mama Blog

Blah, blah, blah

I had the best of intentions to do a whole post on some possible trends for fall according to my new People Style Watch magazine. I bought the People Style Watch last Sunday afternoon and couldn’t wait to look at every single page and see if the fashion industry is honestly going to try to sell us on the idea of denim leggings.

(Regretfully, the answer is yes.)

(Also, they actually used the word “chambray” and I had to check to make sure I hadn’t purchased an issue from 1991.)

Anyway, on Sunday night I searched high and low for my People Style Watch but couldn’t find it. I even looked in the refrigerator, which is just a sad statement on my mental faculties because there was a real possibility that it could have been there right next to the lettuce and week-old leftovers. Finally, I decided that the bagger had done me wrong and forgot to put it in my grocery sack.

And then I went to crawl under the covers and there it was underneath my pillow.

I’m going out tomorrow to buy a book of Sudoku puzzles in an attempt to help my cognitive abilities.

All of this to say that I had big fashion plans but then spent way too many hours out in the sun yesterday and I’m exhausted and have lost my will to search for fashion finds all over the internet. So instead I’ll just sum it up by telling you that there’s a high probability the denim legging is not your friend.

Also, I’m finally reading “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett after hearing so many rave reviews and I cannot put it down. In fact, I may be finished with it by tomorrow night which makes me sad.

So how about you? Have you read any good books or worn any denim leggings lately?

I apologize for the randomness. I blame the heat.

Y’all have a good Friday.

I hate to burst your random little bubble… but I googled The Help because I’m always in need of a good book… and it’s Kathryn StockETT not StockTON. Just blame it on the heat! And we could use some if it down here in Australia, if you could find a way! :)

    Gena says:

Hmmmm. Good books……. “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time.” Denim leggings…..a definite NO. They rank up there with skinny jeans, root canals, and shark bites. I don’t think even Tori can pull those off. I’m sure Dean could. ;)

    ….so sleep deprived.

  3. 3

“Sarah’s Key” was a great read however it is very “heavy”. It was definitely not a beach read but it should go on your “to read” list. :)

  4. 4

OK just looked at it and I must read it because I LOVE THE COVER! Is it sad that this motivates me? It is but who cares.

    Krysia says:

I just read Twilight and I am over half way through the second book in the series. The thought of denim leggings stuck to my legs is not appealing. My favorite thing to wear is skirts above the knee, soft tee-shirts, and flip- flops. I teach preschool at a Christian school and so I won’t be able to wear the flip-flops in the Fall, my skirt can’t be too short, and I have to keep my cleavage in check. So I am enjoying these last days of summer! I enjoy reading your sight every day. It makes me smile….I can really relate! Thank you for that.

    I loved The Help.

I do want more of a fall fashion summary when you recoop.

    Donnamo says:

Loved Sarah’s Key and NOW & THEN by Jacqueline Sheehan.

  8. 8

You know, the one girl that I work with wears denim leggings all. the. time. My thought? Don’t they pull in places that, um, they shouldn’t?

Come on by and enter for a $10.00 gift card to Target! I know it is a couple of extra lights down these days, but you could buy a cute shirt! Not guaranteeing that $10.00 is enough to put into those leggings, though. :)

    Marjie B. says:

Iam reading Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. It’s a good one.

  10. 10
    Sarah says:

The Help is AMAZING! I was depressed when it was over. I’m dying for a sequel, but know that it’s probably not going to happen!

Try Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier after you’re done with The Help. It was just as great.

  11. 11

I think I’ll pass on the denim leg warmers. I am getting ready to start “The Fixer Upper” by Mary Kay Andrews. I love her writing!

  12. 12
    Jen says:

Loved “The Help”. Right now I’m reading an advance copy of “The Gift of an Ordinary Day: A Mother’s Memoir” by Katrina Kenison. Enjoying it very much.

  13. 13
    Halala Mama says:

No on the denim leggings – they were never my friend… I bought Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Langauages in an effort to figure out just what might make my husband SPEAK on a more regular basis.

  14. 14
    Michelle says:

I just started The Help last night. Love it thus far! I kind of hoped the words “denim” and “leggings” were some type of oxymoronic joke.

  15. 15
    Allison says:

I also goggled, Kathryn Stockton, and wow – definitely the wrong thing! The heat…oh, the heat can do terrible things to us!

  16. 16
    Darla says:

You’ve probably already read it, but “Same kind of different as me” was the most moving book I have ever read. Bar none. Loved it.

    Denim leggings…not so much.

  17. 17
    Kim says:

I also loved The Help and look forward to future books written by this author.

I don’t often leave comments (if ever), but just want you to know that I read your blog first thing in the morning with my cup of coffee. Thanks for the entertainment! Love you!

    Heather says:

I just finished Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. I read it very quickly – really good fictional story based on some facts about Frank Llody Wright’s marriage. I was surprised at how interesting it was and I really enjoyed the female perspective of this controversial issue in the late 1800′s/early 1900′s.

  19. 19

Denim leggings? For real? Why? Just why?

And after you Jonny Quest comment the other day I DVR’d some of the episodes. Baby girl is enjoying them right now.

  20. 20
    Joanna says:

I recently helped my mom purge her closets. In the process, we got rid of about twenty-three pairs of leggings and stirrup pants in a rainbow of colors, one of which was denim!

My mom was not happy about this because she is one of about seven people on the planet that think leggings are flattering for everyone. Um, no.

However, if I had known denim leggings were going to make a re-appearance this fall, I might have kept them for myself. NOT!

  21. 21
    rhonda says:

No to the leggings – being short in stature and wider in girth than I desire- leggings are not my friend. Good books- started Same Kinda Different As Me.

  22. 22
    Molly Pearce says:

My all time favorite book is, There’s a slight chance I might go to hell by Laurie Notaro. All her books are Hill-Larry-Us!!! Don’t be skewed by the title, its about a woman that moves with her husband to a new state and to make friends she enters beauty pagent only to be trained by a former black sheep beauty queen and learns of the towns secrets. You’ll love it!!! And I don’t think demin jeans would work for me but I know a few hair burners at my moms beauty shop that will try to pull the look off.

    deanna says:

Guess what?!?! I just finished “The Help” last week and I loved it. I don’t want to give anything away, but I really wanted to find out more about what happened between Skeeter & Stuart. Oh well….I’m in the market for another good book. Let me know if you hear of any!

  24. 24
    Kimberly says:

“Perfectly Imperfect” by Lee Woodruff is a must read. Also read the book she wrote with her husband, Bob about his near fatal injuries in Iraq while covering the war for the news. It’s called “In an Instant.” That book will make you laugh, cry, be angry, and be amazed at the human spirit and resiliency.

As for denim leggings or leggings at all… seriously?!? Come on fashion industry…you can’t do any better than that?!?

  25. 25
    Brandi says:

I’m still infatuated with Twilight. Finishing up with Breaking Dawn right now,and noooooo I will not be wearing leggings this fall, denim or otherwise. :)

  26. 26
    Beckypdj says:

Daisy Chain, by Mary DeMuth. I just finished it a couple of days ago…..very good. A word of caution, it is a trilogy and you do not find out “whodunit” in this book. I’m ready for the other 2 to come out!

  27. 27
    Jenny F. says:

I’m reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I had a flight from TX to CA yesterday and read almost the whole way. It is a slower read than I prefer, but I feel like I’m being transported to a differnt place and time that I would love to find out more about.
As far as denim leggings??? They sound way to hot for TX these days!!! Have a great weekend!

  28. 28
    jill_in_AL says:

I’ve read an Elizabeth Adler book, Malibu Nights, recently and it was so good, very PG rated(compared to Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele) with intrigue, romance and descriptive locations.

Can’t wait for fashion Friday’s again. Yesterday at Marshall’s they had the silk and cashmire wrap scarves on clearance really cheap for like $4 and I wondered if that meant they were going OUT. Lay it on us whenever the fashion spirit moves—we’re ready!

  29. 29

I live in FL and wouldn’t want anything purposely stuck to my legs… ever. Especially denim.

Last night I finished reading “The House at Riverton” by Kate Morton. It’s worth reading and I’m sad it’s over.

  30. 30
    Jeni says:

The only denim leggings in my house belong to my 2 year old. Toddlers can get away with things like leggings & gigantic hairbows.

  31. 31
    Name Nazi says:

Wow. I’m 99% sure I wouldn’t even put demin leggings on my kindergartener. Yikes. I don’t want her looking back on old photos and wanting to put me in a nursing home right then and there.

Books … Sunday’s at Tiffany’s was fabulous and a really easy read. I’m also really enjoying Anita Shreve. When Last They Met was a good one. Seaglass. Body Surfing.

  32. 32

Loved The Help – also, Mighty Queens of Freeville (chick book), Peace Like a River (oldie but goodie – very moving), Last Bite (good beach read), and School of Essential Ingredients (great characters who meet while attending cooking classes).

  33. 33
    spiritmom says:

Just finished Prayers for Sale about the friendship of women set back in the Depression era. So good! Twists and turns you wouldn’t imagine!!

  34. 34
    Ashley says:

“The History of Love” by Nicole Krass…great naration and memorable characters!

  35. 35

Fictionwise I am reading “Persuasion” by Jane Austen.

Non-Fiction (besides the Bible) is “Costly Call” compiled and edited by Caner and Pruitt and “Miniskirts, Mothers, & Muslims” by C. Mallouhi

Brain wise I do crossword puzzles in my spare moments – when I can find the book. that is.

I do not wear jean leggings, but I do buy jeans that don’t fit right because I am too lazy to try them on in the store.

  36. 36
    Linda in Austin says:

The Help was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! For a couple of other recommendations: Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly and The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. They also take you away to another time and place.
Love your blog! It gets me going every morning and I need all the help I can get…

  37. 37
    Amy says:

Listening to Crazy Love (http://www.crazylovebook.com/) by Francis Chan, does that count? This summer hasn’t been generous with time to sit and read. That’s just wrong!

  38. 38
    Courtney says:

I actually just started reading the Twilight series on Sunday, and I’m on the second book. They are pretty addicting! I haven’t heard of this book, I will have to check it out!

  39. 39
    Teresa says:

Just want to second the recommendation from Darla, “Same kind of different as me”. It was one of the best books I have ever read.

  40. 40
    Mel says:

I just finished a trilogy called The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. Yes, I’m over 30 and have three kids and this book is in the young adult section, but it was really good. The good guys are descendants of humans and angels and defeat demons in NYC. Sounds silly, but I found it well written.

  41. 41

I’ve been wanting to branch out to some new authors so thanks everyone for the great ideas. After so many rave reviews, I was ready to go buy ‘the Help’ today until Deanna stated that one of the characters is named Skeeter. I’m from S. Arkansas and actually knew someone named Skeeter so I may have to rethink this decision!

  42. 42
    Carrie in NYC says:

I have to say Twilight too, if you haven’t read them. I’ve read each one of books (4 in the series) about 4 times.

As for the heat, I actually thought of you last night as I had to put on my suit coat when I walked outside because it was so chilly. I think it’s been the coldest/wettest summer in NYC ever. Miserable. I haven’t even worn my white jeans because it hasn’t been sunny and warm at all! And nothing says summer like white jeans!

  43. 43
    Tiffany says:

It is with great shame that I admit I fell victim to the Twilight madness….And it it with great shame that I also admit I finished the series yesterday and totally and completely loved it. In that mindless read sort of way. What can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic deep down!

  44. 44
    Tara G. says:

Books in my hand = unkempt house. I got a couple of books from the church library on Sunday (a week ago). Each day I took my oldest to VBS I got another and had the series read by Tuesday. It was a Kingsbury series- Redemption, I think.

  45. 45
    Sugar Mommy says:

    books:
Same Kind of Different as Me (I kept double-checking the cover ro remind me that it was really a true story!)
    Sea Glass (sad, but good)
    Redeeming Love (incredible!!)

    denim leggings (REALLY??):
fashion designers need to do a summer internship in Houston before graduating to the big runways—they wouldn’t last a day, lo, and hour while wearing denim ANYTHING in our mosquito-ridden humidity

  46. 46
    Amanda says:

Melissa and I both tried on some fake denim leggings at Arden B earlier this summer and she was super cute in them. They were not for me. I’ve been looking for a good book for our 12 days in Jackson Hole, so thanks for the rec!

  47. 47
    Kimberly says:

Its too hot to think about fashion. Except maybe shoes…

  48. 48

Charles Martin – Chasing Fireflies & Where the River Ends – I read both in less than a week!

  49. 49

I always love good book recommendations. This one will be on my list. (Need to finish Emma first. Always, always love Jane Austen.)

  50. 50
    Amy says:

I’ve been reading “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World” and “The Hole in Our Gospel.” And on a side note, anything by Francine Rivers is excellent.

As for denim leggings? Maybe I can get away with the fact that some of my jeans are starting to feel a little too tight anyway…

  51. 51
    Carolyn says:

I read The Help after Boo Mama recommended it on her blog. I loved it. John Grisham got back on my good side with his newest book, The Associate. It was more like his first books that I loved.

  52. 52
    lavonda says:

I’m about to start Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers… it’s based on the book of Hosea, and I’ve heard really, really good things about it!

Just finished reading Twilight, though. while my husband was in Alaska for 2 weeks. Y’all, I could NOT put them down! I read the whole series in 4 days. Yep, one book a day. It’s a good thing Jordan and Emily are self-sufficient for cereal and sandwiches, because stopping to feed my children didn’t appear to be an option.
    (teasing)
    (kind of)

I told my husband the other day, the worst thing that could’ve happened to him was me reading those books. Because now I’m going to expect him to love me and treat me the way Edward treats Bella.

    Leggings? No way, Jose.
Not this chick. Not at this weight.
If I decide to stop eating for several months and get back to 103 pounds… then maybe.
    (ie: not gonna happen)

  53. 53
    Rachel says:

I just finishes The Secret Life of Bees and must say, love is not a strong enough word. If you are extremely behind the times, like me, and haven’t read it yet, you should.

And denim leggings? Yeah. NO. I have a very strict no leggings policy. Not because they wouldn’t look good, but because no matter how good or bad they would look, I’m not trying to look 8. I just can’t get past the fact that the last time I wore them I was 8. I do have to wonder is pegging the jeans will come back. I will be looking for a nice cave to hide in, if so. That’s just wrong. It was wrong in 6th grade and it is still wrong.

  54. 54
    Bethany says:

It’s been recommended a few times already, but seriously, Same Kind of Different as Me was fantastic. I cried so hard, and we were at the beach. My mom kept saying, “B, why are you reading that? You’re getting yourself so upset!” She’s now reading it and sent me a text that said, “Same Kind of Different = Beautiful. I understand your tears.” It’s a great story of God’s people, His love, and how we should love others. AMAZING!

  55. 55

First, THANK YOU for the comment about the chambray. I have StyleWatch too and was completely dumbfounded by the suggestion of chambray.

Second- I read some really great books this summer- go here for titles and info: http://www.totalmomsense.net/2009/07/fashion-and-fun-reads.html

    Have a good day!

Denim leggings make me cringe. And weep. And wail with dismay that some poor soul will wear them.

As for books, you must read The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb and The Given Day by Dennis Lehane.

  57. 57
    Kristina says:

“Redeeming Love” and “And the Shofar Blew” by Francine Rivers are 2 faves. (anything by her is great!) Right now I am reading the O’Mally series by Dee Henderson.

  58. 58
    Chelsea says:

So the other day I was watching Chopped and this guy lost his mushrooms. Turns out, he left the pot (haha.. pun..) in the pantry. But he blamed this other chef. Said she took them. And then he stole some of hers! Random, I know. But your lost magazine reminded me.

The idea of denim leggings makes me want to throw up.

  59. 59
    wanda says:

Leggings….denim or otherwise, GROSS ME OUT!
I know…I sound like a hater and maybe I am. But I just cannot wear them. Ewww!

Ever since stirrup pants went out….no can do tight stuff all the way down to my footsies!

Oh….I am going to pick up that book right now! THanks.

  60. 60
    Shari Campa says:

NO on the leggings…never should of then and certainly won’t now!

Still Alice by Lisa Genova – heartwrenching fictional story about a woman who gets Alzheimers (you’ll think you have it if you are like me!) told from her perspective. Read it in one night it was so gripping.

Just got a note that The Help was finally in at the library – headed off right now to grab it and plan to spend my day with it!

  61. 61
    Amy says:

Denim leggings? Seriously? Wonder what Stacy & Clinton from What Not to Wear would say about those.

Looks like a great book. Adding it to my list to pick up soon.

Don’t worry about the cognitive abilitites. I’m always catching myself putting something in the frig that shouldn’t be in there. I blame it all on the busyness of life.

  62. 62
    irene says:

I bought a pair of fake demin leggings at target last summer.. and i loved them! They were comfortable but looked like skinny jeans. My neighbor loved them so much she asked me to exchanged them for some of her cute stuff.

    Denim leggings? BLERGH.

I’m reading Real Food by Nina Planck and I’m mesmerized. I have to stop myself from telling everyone I meet to EAT TRADITIONAL FOODS THE WAY GOD MADE THEM! As delightful as that would be. Ahem.

    Anyway, I highly recommend it.

Oh glory, The Help was the best book I’ve read in years. I had borrowed it from the library, but after reading it I knew I wanted my very own copy so I could underline all the wonderful lines. I sure hope Kathryn Stockett is going to bless us with another novel soon.

  75. 75

I’ve read all 4 Twilight books and love them!!! Also, I read many Joan Hess mysteries. I love her Arly Hanks series. Funny southern humor!!

  76. 76
    Emily says:

Thanks for a good laugh. I got so tickled that you looked for the mag in the fridge…I’ve had to do similar things too. I don’t which is better: that, or the fact that you found it under your pillow!
My sister gave me a book about pregnancy and all things related…The author wore stir-ups during all her pregnancies and almost had me sold. Seeing that it’s not the late 1980′s, I just couldn’t do it.

  77. 77
    Susan says:

Loved, loved, loved “The Help.” Wonderful book.People from the north may think we are making a lot of it up, but I can attest to the truth of some of the book.

If you’ve never read “A Town Like Alice” by Nevil Shute then I highly recommend picking it up. It is a thoughtful, historical classic with a smidge of romance thrown in.

  78. 78
    Susan says:

Oh, and wait’ll you find out what the one maid did to her employer!!

  79. 79

Read The Shack after resisting for about a year. Enjoyed it, thoroughly. Very thought-provoking.

I’m with you on the cognitive issues. Sometimes my lack of memory is a little staggering.

  80. 80
    Whitney says:

So many favorite books – Same Kind of Different as Me, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Shack, Follow the River.

I just bought Sarah’s Key so I’m happy to hear others here liked it. I will also have to get The Help.

I wore leggings and stirrup pants in the 80s and 90s and I ain’t going back.

  81. 81
    Erin says:

A Lady of Hidden Intent by Tracie Peterson is the best book I’ve read in a long time. It’s a nice little romantic story that definitely holds your interest. I read it in one day. I literally could not put it down. I finished it at 5 in the morning, which is crazy, because I am most definitely a girl that needs my sleep.

Oh, and it says it’s book 2 of a series, but the books are not related, so you don’t have to read the others.

  82. 82

ok for fiction anything joanna lindsey,

    Mel Black says:

If any of you have seen the movie “My Sister’s Keeper,” but have not read the book, read it now. (Jodi Picoult) You’ll love the story. And you’ll want to demand your money back for your movie ticket!

  84. 84
    Kelly says:

LOVED, LOVED The Help. A few other books I’ve liked: Firefly Lane, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, Same Kind of Different as Me.

  85. 85
    Christy T. says:

Totally listening to The Help on an audio book right now, and I find I’ve been ignoring people around me just so I can focus and listen. In fact, my husband and I had a three hour drive the other day and I was all, Oh I’ll drive, and hey, don’t you have work that you could do while we drive? And I listened to that book the entire time. I think we said two words to each other I was so enthralled with my listening. I’m not done yet, but I’ve come to a listening halt in the last few days mostly for fear of the book ending. I’m really enjoying it.

  86. 86
    Leslie says:

I just started The Help today! I hadn’t heard of it until a friend lent it to me. I’m glad to hear the rave reviews. I just read 1000 White Women which was ok.

  87. 87
    Mary Kay says:

Oh my word! I LOVE talking good books! I actually stumbled onto The Help on Amazon.com about a month ago…Funny story–I actually ordered 3 (hardbacks, ack!) by mistake. I wondered why my total was so high… :-) Oh well–I’ve already given one away as a gift. I LOVED The Help. It literally took me back to my childhood in the South. Read many passages out loud to my husband and daughter.

Also would love to recommend Firefly Lane. I see someone else just did, too. It is the story of a lifelong friendship between 2 very different girls/women. Oh, did I cry…several times throughout…

I think you’d also really love reading Same Kind of Different as Me–especially since it is set in Texas. (mostly Ft. Worth)

I just finished LA Candy by Lauren Conrad. I don’t know if you’re a fan of the hills, but despite the mediocre story line, I did breeze right through it in about an evening.

I loved “The Help”. Another book I loved is “The Last Sin Eater”. I think it is a Francine Rivers book.

Just finished The Help last night, amazing.

Read Blackbird and Still Waters by Jennifer Lauck in the last couple of weeks – both were wonderful.

Starting on The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane – weird title, but it’s supposed to be great.

I read this post the other day then went to Cal’s campus for an eye appointment/lunch with my husband. As I was pushing my daughter’s stroller up the hill to our car, what did I see in front of me? A girl wearing denim leggings. It was all I could do not to yell out, “Oh my gosh, she was for real about the denim leggings?!” Once she turned off the path we were on, I definitely said to my daughter, “Brooklyn, did you just see those leggings? Denim, Brooklyn, denim. Unbelievable.” She’s 11 months old, but I’m pretty sure she agreed with me that it’s just crazy…

I’ve not only read “The Help” myself but it’s been lent to my daughter and then to my son’s daughter and I’m listening to it again on audiobook. I’m just hoping they make it into a movie! Oprah would have to play Minny. I thought first of Reese Witherspoon for Skeeter but she’s not tall enough. Perhaps Cate Blanchett could do it – she is the master of dialects so I’m sure her “suthin’” accent would be spot on. Abileen – now who could play her? Oh, I’m seeing Delta Burke as Hilly, oh my, oh my!

No comment on denim leggings. If people want to swelter in the heat of demin pantihose without the feet, that’s their misfortune. As for me and my house, we will stick with capri’s in summer, jeans in winter. Period.
