A few weeks ago my friend Steph and I had plans to go shop at the outlet mall in San Marcos. But then the day before we were supposed to go I came down with a cold/sinus issues/allergies/black plague and I knew I wouldn’t have the stamina to endure the marathon that is outlet shopping, so we rescheduled for yesterday.
On Tuesday I received a text message from Steph that read “Torn between two lovers. The semi-annual sale starts at Nordys on Wednesday. Should we go there or to the outlet malls?”
I don’t know. What’s more important, my left arm or my left leg?
Ultimately we decided to shop the Nordstrom sale because it only happens twice a year, plus the cafe upstairs serves those thin little french fries with the kalamata aioli dipping sauce.
My original plan was to take pictures of all the cute stuff we saw as we shopped. But you know what’s useful when you make that type of plan?
If you remember to actually take your camera out of your purse and use it. I cannot tell you how sorry I am, especially because that plan would have been so much simpler than trying to recreate all that I saw using only the internet.
But I’ll do my best.
Also, did you know that there is a Zara store at La Cantera? I originally heard about Zara at a Deeper Still conference when Beth and Priscilla mentioned on stage that they liked to shop there on occasion, but had never experienced one for myself until yesterday when I discovered that there is an ENTIRE SECTION of The Shops at La Cantera that I never knew existed. The only excuse for this oversight is that it’s located beyond the Food Court and I guess I get distracted once I see Chick-fil-A.
Anyway, here are a few things I thought were cute.
(By the way, Zara did have some really cute, very affordable things, but they don’t have a shoppable website)
(Is shoppable a word?)
I hate to do this to you because all I’m doing is causing you to join in my deep longing. If this isn’t one of the cutest sweatercoats you’ve ever seen, I’ll eat my hat.
Unfortunately, if I brought this coat home with me it would be all I’d have left to keep me warm at night. P wouldn’t understand the way the ruffles whispered my name and caused me to lose my sense of restraint and cost-appropriateness.
2. Ambition Corduroy Blazer
I didn’t buy one of these because I’m not in the market for a new blazer. Also, I’m a little afraid of the term “blazer”.
However, this is a really great jacket and even better in person than in the picture. Plus it comes in some great colors.
3. Naughty Monkey ‘Ring Maestro’ Boot
I love the detail of these boots. I love the color. I love the wedge heel that makes them so versatile.
But, let’s be honest, what really sold me was the name brand. I’d like to buy them just so I could make references to my naughty monkeys and cause people to wonder if I have a side job raising spider monkeys in my backyard.
Of course I guess a side job would require me to have a real job first.
When Gulley and I were in college, the Diamond Darlings held a garage sale to raise money. I kid you not that we sold an old coat of Nena’s that looked EXACTLY like this one and oh did we laugh and mock and use the word “groovy” and other insults circa 1970′s.
But now I kind of wish we had the original.
5. Cable-knit Hooded Sweater Dress
In the interest of full disclosure I have to confess that I didn’t actually see this yesterday because we didn’t go in Old Navy. As far as I know, there isn’t an Old Navy in La Cantera unless I’m missing out on a whole other section of the mall. Which we now know is entirely possible.
Anyway, I’m including this hooded sweater dress because the number one fashion-related question I get in my email inbox is some version of “What’s a good alternative to the sweatsuit?” or in other words, “How can I walk around in my pajamas without looking like I’m in my pajamas?”
Steph and I pondered this question yesterday and ultimately decided that there really isn’t a good alternative for the sweatsuit. I mean, sure, you can run around in your velour sweatpants (guilty!) or your yoga pants (guilty again!) but you can only make those things look so cute. There is a cuteness threshold.
However, I think that you could easily pair a sweater/jersey/cotton type tunic/dress with leggings and either flats, sneakers or boots and have yourself a presentable look that would provide the comfort of a sweatsuit. Maybe I’m delusional, but I thought I’d throw it out there.
And on that note, I’m wrapping it up.
I realize I only featured five items today but that’s because that number coincides with the time I was rudely awakened this morning by a child who has the morning sensibilities of an overeager rooster. I need some sleep.
And to save some money for blackout shades for Caroline’s bedroom.
And to get my playbook ready for my solo coaching effort on Saturday since I don’t know anything and there is no rain in the forecast.
Y’all have a great Friday.

Thanks again for all the tips! Good luck on Saturday. I am sure you and the Mighty Rainbows will do great:)
I heart Zara…it is huge in London.
Good luck tomorrow!
Oh, Big Mama! When I saw the gumshoe sweatercoat in the anthro catalog yesterday, I just KNEW you would have it on your list! I love it too. Great minds and all that…
I’ve actually only heard the word gumshoe used one other time in my life and it was yesterday when my 8 year old told me she needed to be a gumshoe and then provided a definition for her clearly uneducated mother. But now, really?, in a coat. It must be fate.
Thinking about 5 am makes me hurt.
Fun shopping trip lady!
That is the third time I have seen that Arthro coat this week, maybe it is fate? Maybe it is a sign? Maybe my husband would not disown me if I buy it…..yeh right, oh well, I love it.
My LOL moment of this post is
“I was rudely awakened this morning by a child who has the morning sensibilities of an overeager rooster” Great mental picture there….lol, we gotta love their energy, right?!
Have a great weekend. Going to read the makeup post! I need help getting out of my Neutrogena bubble as well!
Never heard of naughty monkey, but those boots are adorable! I clicked from one pair to the next, to the next, and then had to click the little X in the top right of my screen, because I too like to snuggle with my husband!
Have a great weekend!
That purple sweater coat is DIVINE. I only wish I could pull off the ruffle. For some mysterious reason, ruffles make me look like a fashion victim.
But I do love that blazer/jacket, as well as several others from the same maker that were pictured on the sidebar on the site.
Such CUTE stuff!!!
My daughter has that cable sweater dress from Old Navy, she wore it to school Monday with some tights and a pair of black riding boots – it was adorable!
i wish i’d never seen that sweatercoat from anthro! now, i’m thinking of a lunchtime trip down the road to scope it out up close! thanks!
oh that SWEATERCOAT!
i did my own fashion friday this week – trends that i SWORE i’d never wear, but now love. (like the skinny jean)

Ooo … pair that sweater dress with a pair of leggings and you will think that you are in your pajamas. I wonder if Old Navy will put that on sale any time soon …
Best of luck to the Mighty Rainbows. Don’t let Caroline tell you that you don’t know anything.
I want that ON sweater coat, but the Anthropolgie is too cute.
My mom and grandmother used to force us to go with them to the outlets at San Marcos. It was the worst kind of torture for me as a kid…now I’d give my right arm (well, maybe just my left) to shop there sans children.
Good luck at the big game, coach!
Maybe you’ll do such a good job that it will inspire a Lifetime Movie about your experiences.
I love seeing the things you are pulling out for Fashion Friday.
I’d love to see what you think of the furry vests ala Rachel Zoe. I’m in love with them and was able to score one at Stein Mart. Bananas! LOL
My family frequents the cafe at Nordstrom WEEKLY-and I have to have the fries with the olive dipping sauce-SO GOOD!! Have you had their bread pudding?? It is to die for!! Love reading your blog!
My sister and I love the fries and dipping sauce at Nordstrom!!!! I try and go there everytime I’m in Dallas!!!
If you are seriously in the market for some blackout curtains for her room then check these out: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Velvet-Pole-Top-Curtain-Panel-Pair/726831/product.html
I got some for my daughter’s room and they are awesome light blockers!
I’ve been a lurker on your site for a long time, religiously reading everyday. I think you’re hilarious! My husband and I just took a trip to Texas (literally…we got back today) visiting Houston and San Antonio. While we were there I couldn’t help but think, “I wonder where Big Mama lives in Texas” and “If I weren’t such a lurker and actually talked to her we could meet” and then I get home and start catching up on my blog reading and I see you were going to go to the San Marcos Outlet and I think, “Oh-Em-Gee, I was totally just at that outlet mall y-e-s-t-e-r-d-a-y!!” And I got super excited that I went somewhere that someone on the internet that I don’t really know but basically stalk was possibly going to go.
And then I realized exactly how pathetic my life is.
I SO wish that Nordstrom would open up a store in my town. I wish that even more this time of year when I receive e-mails in my inbox, announcing the half-yearly sale! Unfortunately, the nearest one is about 2.5 hours away and, with two little ones, that spontaneous trip just isn’t happening.
I’m glad you found so many cute items though.
Oh, and I totally love Zara.
I was in Old Navy today and had to check out that sweater dress…it’s on sale for $25 right now:)
That Old Navy sweater dress thing is awesome! I think it’s going on my Christmas list.
first of all, I am jealous you went to la cantera…because I used to live 5 minutes from that mall…and I miss it!
I love that olive aoili as well…they have the recipe in one of the cookbooks..course its kind of a long recipe!
I do at least get a discount at nordstrom since my hubby works for them…so I guess I cant complain too much!
Love that Daytrip Plaid Coat. I wonder if you could do a Ski Edition of Fashion Friday sometime? I have to go on a ski trip in March and I must buy ski clothes. Snow fashion is foreign to me, since I live in MS. Not that you have much in Texas.:o)
I know you watch Project Runway, but did you know that Carol Hannah has a blog too? And an Esty shop? She’s got some pretty cute stuff in her shop!

i usually skip over your fashion friday posts because i’m 58 & have bone spurs in my feet & have to have the incredibly comfortable though not beautiful, anne klein loafers. i’m also petite, slightly rounded & very short waisted. sounds awful but with clothes from chico’s i usually look pretty respectable.
anyway, i started to do my skip over your post thing & my eyes picked up some of my favorite words: Nordstrom’s Kalamata Aioli Dip. there is no better way to do lunch than to go with a girlfriend to nordstrom’s & have their chicken club & a big order of fries with even extra dip.
& now – thanks to you – i have the recipe.
thank you sooooooooo much. can’t wait to try it out.
