Last night I was getting Caroline ready for bed when she announced that she was on the precipice of making a major decision regarding her future. She informed me that she is either going to be a singer or a veterinarian when she grows up.
(Given her gene pool, I wanted to suggest that she keep those grades up and hope for admission to vet school)
As she weighed the pros and cons of each occupation, she ultimately realized that she didn’t have to choose. She could take care of animals and sing. In fact, she told me that she planned to sing two or three times a week.
Then she announced, “But I want to be a mama too.”
“Well, baby, you can be a mama and a veterinarian and a singer.”
(And bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan.)
“Yes, I want to be all of them.”
“Do you want to be a mama like me with the sweetest little girl ever?”
“Oh Mama” she said with the sigh that comes with stating the obvious, “There’ll never be another girl as sweet as me.”

I may be slightly biased, but I kind of think she’s right.

She and my daughter could be best friends…I hear stuff like that too! And our family never gets tired of the Caroline videos. She is so funny!!
Great story! I love Caroline’s wit and hearing about her dreams. By the way, every time I’m in San Antonio visiting my folks like I was last weekend, I think of you, wondering if I’ll ever run into Big Mama…maybe in the H.E.B. candy aisle??
HA! That shows how much you know about the joys of eventually becoming a grandmother. The grands are eons more fun than even those delightful children I had(we are NOT talking about years 13 to 17 though). It has something to do with all the joy with none of the responsibility. It may also include a little bit of sadistic amusement watching my kids deal with the same issues in my “darling, perfect” grandchildren that made me want to tear my hair out by my unhighlighted roots.
I have a little Caroline, but her name is Maggie! Kids really do say the darndest things.
I am just afraid Caroline limits herself;) Seriously it is wonderful that you and p have raised her to be so confident. She will need it in junior high.
She is so funny! I guess she gets it from her mama. LOL
Can she type? Watch out Big Mama, she could add “blogger” to her list of accomplishments!
Adorable!
They literally steal your heart!
God love her!
she is precious,,,
ps is your husband as funny as you and her?
and um did you use the word precpice !!
oh i heart you big mama!!
I love her confidence and her modesty!
That is so stinking awesome. I mean, really. Love it!
I find career guidance with these young girls to be THE hardest part. We were told as we grew up that we *could* have all that and a bag of chips. As I’ve grown up and done it all, I realize we can’t. I wonder if we do our girls a disservice when we tell them they can be whatever they want to be? I’ve taken to telling my daughter that she can choose her career, of course, but if she also wants to be a mom who is at home most of the time, she will have to choose a career with a lot of flexibility.
Perry is too funny as long as you appreciate his humor. If you don’t, you don’t get it.
Funny little girl with the “Don’t be silly Mama” attitude.
This made me smile!!!
Kids do say it like it is huh?
Oh the humbleness of girlhood.
Its slightly funny that she wants to go from hunting(aka killing)animals with P to saving their lives when she’s older. Maybe she’s preparing herself for any feelings of “what did I do all these things for in my youth that I must now try to make up for?”.
Except I doubt she’d put it exactly that way!
Just to be clear,I’m not saying she shouldn’t go hunting with P or that hunting is in any way something bad that she needs to make up for. I was just saying.
Of course, she can do all of those things. However, she may want to take a couple of animals to the vet first. I wanted to be a vet until I helped my friend take her psycho cat to the vet. Changed my mind right there.
These are the gems you keep for future use to embarass(shame) the heck outta her when need be.
Oh Caroline you never cease to make me LOL and smile!
You’ve got a treasure Melanie!
Very very sweet!
You gotta love the honesty of a child!
She is a ham.
I love her, and she’s not even mine, haha!!!!!
Oh, I have read your blog forever, and never commented, but I just have to say that your little girl is just adorable! My Kathryn is just her age, and I can so totally relate!
Your blog is such a bright spot in my day. Always fun to read, always gives me a giggle or something to think about. I really enjoy reading!
My daughet (6 years old) will tell you she wants to be Hannah Monatana or a veterinatian…. The choices these girls have to make……
Sorry about misspelled word. Daughter.
I’ll tell ya, one thing that girl is not lacking is confidence. LOL I hope she never looses that quality. I think especially for girls it is so important for them to have self confidence. That is great that you’ve been able to instill that in her. She is a true gem.
That sounds like exactly the kind of thing I would have said as a little girl. My mom did an excellent job of growing my self-esteem…maybe a little bit too excellent of a job!
When I was little, I wanted to be both a princess and a Navy Seal!
When my daughter was Caroline’s age, she decided she wanted to be a dancer and a veterinarian. She never changed her mind. She is in the pre-veterinary program in college and is still taking dance classes too.
Oh, this is darling.
You can tell that your a good mom when you kids make comments like that one! Great job raising a happy girl!
My second born son and his boy classmates (5 of them) wanted to live in a tree together, eat ham sandwiches and never get married. Still waiting to see if that one pans out now that he is 22.
All I can say is……you and P have your hands full.
AWESOME. Solid Gold. She is such a cutie.
Awwe, how funny! When I was little, I wanted to be a garbage man!??? Seriously. But I just wanted to get to stand up and ride on the back of the truck. Good thing she has higher aspirations
It truly is a good thing we don’t live in the same zip code. Even the great state of Texas couldn’t hold the combined self-assurance of our two girls.
oh that’s good, until you hold your first granddaughter. Enjoy. In God’s Love, sheila
Tell her to keep dreaming big!!
My almost 4 year old told me she wants to be a “doctor what helps the babies pop out of the mommies’ tummies.” I hope she can earn enough for med school!!
I Heart this 100%!
I love it!!!
lol….I just love listening to kids. That’s one of the few things I miss about teaching school. And way to keep that girl in high esteems!
Aww, how sweet! Remember that the next tme she fets on your nerves.
She’s a cutie!
She is a sweetie. My daughter was 7 when she decided she would either be an actress or a cashier at Taco Bell. Now at 17, we are looking at colleges and she doesn’t have any idea what she wants to be…
I love it. My girl wants to be a momma, too, AND Batman.
Such a sweet story!
Very cute!!
And then one day she will have a child of her own–perhaps a daughter, and you will wonder how it could possibly be that your heart could contain such joy.
This spoken from the mouth of a BRAND NEW GRANDMOTHER as of yesterday! It’s sweet! Oh so sweet!
