I’m still waiting to get in my jumping mood

January 21, 2010

It’s too bad that ten minutes of watching someone else jump rope doesn’t offer the same benefits as actually doing it yourself. Otherwise I’d be in the best shape of my life.

Jumping Rope from Big Mama on Vimeo.

Just a few thoughts:

1. I love how she addresses the camera like she’s talking to an audience. She was born for the stage.

2. It’s always a sad day when a girl doesn’t get as many compliments as she feels her hair and outfit deserve, especially when you’ve slept in braids and have a sweet 80′s waffle iron effect going on.

3. She continued to jump rope for another hour after I shot this video and when I went inside to cook dinner she asked me to open the kitchen window so she could yell at me every time she started a new jump rope rotation.

4. I tried to explain that I couldn’t keep my eyes on her at all times because I was slicing tomatoes and didn’t want to cut my finger. She replied, “What’s the big deal? You cut your finger all the time.”

5. It may be time to have a talk about treating others with kindness and empathy. Especially if it’s your mama.

How about this? My two-year-old came in right after I got out of the shower and said,”You have a booty?” I said,”Yes.” She said,”You have a big booty!”
Well. Thank you very much.
I’ll have to have this conversation with her very soon, I suppose!
Your girl is too funny.

2 aimee January 21, 2010 at 1:35 am

Caroline, I feel your pain! Many a 1980s day in elementary school, I rocked that same hairstyle and waited patiently for the admiration to flow freely. Truly, ALL the kids SHOULD have noticed your post-braided-hair wave AND they should have actively admired it. I mean, seriously. You went through the effort to sleep in those braids to create just the right wavy look. They are just jealous.

BTW, I think that is the perfect jump-roping outfit. One must look good when showing off their mad jump-roping skills! Way to go, girl! Thanks for making me smile! :)

3 Jessalee January 21, 2010 at 2:22 am

The video was adorable. I love how she has a one-minute monologue building up for the big moment when she actually jump ropes.

My daughter is 5, and I always hear about whether someone noticed something new about her or not. I try to tell her that it only matters how it makes her feel to wear it/play with it/use it/whatever. I have not managed to convince her!

4 aggiejenn@ReflectingHim January 21, 2010 at 4:06 am

For a mom with only boys, this brought me such joy. It is sad when you look so cute and not enough people notice!

5 Krysia January 21, 2010 at 6:05 am

She looks so much older! I love the dress and hair. I think I need to go get a jump rope and try to lose some of this Holiday Weight!!

6 Sarah January 21, 2010 at 6:20 am

My favorite part was when she said she had already done “8,000 14′s”!!

She’s going to be a star :)

7 Amanda @ Serenity Now January 21, 2010 at 7:05 am

She is a natural in front of the camera. :) She’s so funny b/c she talks to “us” like she’s got her own little TV show…so cute!

You ought to quit blogging and devote yourself full-time to becoming a certified jump-rope counter. ;)

8 Patty January 21, 2010 at 7:10 am

You will treasure these videow forever! She is a true crack up! Thanks for sharing her with us! She can always make me laugh!

9 wanda January 21, 2010 at 7:39 am

What a cracked pot!

She has it all figured out! Keep em entertained…..and the stage is her friend!

:)

10 Lindsy January 21, 2010 at 7:52 am

Oh the hilarity. I am telling you – she and my neice could be the best of friends! So stinkin’ cute. I love how she cocks her hip out to the side and says Well, like 20 times. Hee hee hee. Thanks for sharing – she’s quite the jumper and mighty stylish while at it!

11 Julianne Fogt January 21, 2010 at 8:06 am

Could she be any cuter? I think not. Get the girl an agent. :) And I agree with aggiejen – as a mom of a boy, this brought a special girl smile to my face.

Thanks for sharing!

12 Mary January 21, 2010 at 8:21 am

It IS sad when no one compliments us when we look that cute. God love her she is wise beyond her years.

“I’ve done 14 8,000 times!” So funny

13 Rena January 21, 2010 at 8:35 am

I just love how God smiles on me in the mornings via Big Mama’s blog.

The ’80s outfit and “waffle” hair bring back so many memories. I totally would’ve complimented her. Totally!

Love how you through out the number 14.

14 Inky Fingers, Paper Cuts, and a Glitter Mustache January 21, 2010 at 8:37 am

Dear Caroline,
You did a fantastic job with the jump rope! And your hair and dress looked great.
When I was your age I always wished MY mom had a video camera because I wanted to do my own cooking show. I thought it was fun to cook and talk about what I was doing at the same time–just like you did about jumping rope.
Keep up the great work with the jump rope!
Jen

15 Traci@TotalMomsense January 21, 2010 at 8:43 am

Well she is adorable- and I am so jealous that she’s outside in short sleeves!

16 Amy January 21, 2010 at 8:58 am

Oh my GOODNESS. I totally cracked up the whole time. I’m so sorry, Caroline, that no one totally you, “oh how cute..”
That was the part that made me laugh the hardest. Still smiling…

17 Molly January 21, 2010 at 9:04 am

That is too cute! I also love how you totally guessed how many times she’d jumped. My 7 year old asks how many times it was every single time she stopped and I never remember to count and therefore have to guess usually based on my last guess!

18 Erin January 21, 2010 at 9:06 am

*Sigh* the trials of being an only child.
I’m pretty sure my mom diligently “watched” me cannon ball into the pool behind her book. Surely she had to have x-ray vision.. right?!?!?
I hope you didn’t cut your finger, though!

19 Lauren Kelly January 21, 2010 at 9:13 am

Caroline is the cutest thing ever. How do you take all the cuteness??? Ha!

20 Melissa January 21, 2010 at 9:17 am

Caroline and I are cut out of the same cloth…looking back, I understand now why my mom cracked up at me a lot…and sent me out with my dad as often as possible!! Life as an only child is tough ;-)

21 shayne January 21, 2010 at 9:21 am

Dearest Caroline,

I rarely comment on your Mama’s blog because she has TONS of devoted readers and I’m sure she has lots more important things to do (like watching you jump rope) than reading my comments.

So…you can see what a truly momentous occasion this is.

I saw your excellent video and was greatly impressed by your sense of style and your ability to jump rope with a smile. I think you are absolutely adorable and are destined for greatness. Keep up the good work.

Yours truly,

Shayne

22 Kathy January 21, 2010 at 9:26 am

She had me in hysterics when she said “well I might not be so good because I just got in my jumping mood”. That’s priceless!!!!

My girls would love that zebra print dress. Where did you get it?

23 Tammie January 21, 2010 at 9:32 am

I can relate to this on so many levels. I took one of those jump ropes to my friend in England for her little girl at the same age as yours. She jumped rope in those “dress up” fake little girl high heels. So Caroline was not over dressed for this demonstration. :-)

24 Andi January 21, 2010 at 9:36 am

Very cute

25 LauraBeth January 21, 2010 at 9:47 am

Oh, how the cuteness overflows! I think her hair and dress are just too precious, and fondly remember the days of sleeping with wet hair in braids so I could look like a poodle the next morning. BTW, short hair and this styling method DO NOT go together!

26 Kim January 21, 2010 at 9:47 am

That girl oozes personality! Watch out world!

27 Kristyn Mostek January 21, 2010 at 9:50 am

My first grader sported the braid-waves this week, too. She actually wore the braids on Tuesday and then did a big “reveal” at school so she got lots of “ooos” and “ahhs” ;) . We had done it up again on Tuesday night, but alas an ice storm cancelled school so she just had to sport her super-cool hair at home where the reaction wasn’t so great.

28 Heather January 21, 2010 at 10:01 am

it actually was 14! Nice Work!

29 Kim January 21, 2010 at 10:05 am

made for the stage! Love it!

30 Mammy January 21, 2010 at 10:08 am

Dear Caroline,
Loved your hair and outfit. You are a whizbang at jumping rope too. I’m so glad Mom had a video camera so that I could relive what I used to do fifty years ago. I would be wheezing like a camel if I did 14 today. Congratulations!

31 Shelly the Chic Crafty Chick January 21, 2010 at 10:22 am

Hmmm, maybe NBC should hire Caroline and just ditch Leno and Conan? I think she is ready for her own show. She is all about working the camera. LOL

She cracks me up all her thoughts on how people should just compliment her and not ask her a lot of questions about her fashion choices. Hilarious.

32 Cori January 21, 2010 at 10:25 am

Aw, that was absolutely precious! WTG Caroline!

33 Stacy Gibbs January 21, 2010 at 10:26 am

She is too funny! Thanks for sharing her jump roping skills! :) Too cute!

34 Aja January 21, 2010 at 10:32 am

This cracked me up. She is too cute, and I love how she flat out let everyone know she had just not received all the compliments she should have… :)

35 Lauren January 21, 2010 at 10:38 am

This is like looking into the future. I can see now what my Natalie is going to be like in a few years!

36 Kelly January 21, 2010 at 10:39 am

She is darling. I think she totally needs her own variety show like Sonny and Cher. Think of all the clothes and hair styles.

37 momof8 January 21, 2010 at 10:47 am

Please tell Caroline I absolutely adore her hair and her outfit. Also let her know her jump rope skills are amazing.

38 Jerriann January 21, 2010 at 11:18 am

That was super cute, everything – from the hairstyle to the cutest clothes ever – to the jumping mood. :) )

39 Cindi In Boston January 21, 2010 at 11:24 am

She’s adorable! Full of personality! She’s totally right, more kids should have been ooing and awing at her awesome hair!

40 Robyn (3girlsmom) January 21, 2010 at 11:36 am

True story.
Mary Emma was in kindergarten. She had slept in braids the night before and was SO EXCITED about going to school with “curly hair” as she called it. She proudly pranced her little self in school where no one (NO ONE) mentioned her hair. Her teacher noticed her sulking a little, but continued the day as planned. Later that morning, they were all sitting on the carpet while the teacher read a book to the class. She was giving them some “ask question” time when Mary Emma, who had been quiet all day – UNUSUAL – raised her hand. Her teacher called her and she said, “I’ve had enough of this reading nonsense. I think we need to stop and talk about my hair.”
So they did. And she was happy. And the teacher still laughs about that to this very day.
Pretty sure Mary Emma and Caroline are some sort of Alabama/Texas/ twins born 2 years apart to separate families. Or something like that.

41 Tasha January 21, 2010 at 11:43 am

CRACK ME UP!

42 the domestic fringe January 21, 2010 at 11:49 am

She is SO funny! She reminds me of my daughter. Super cute outfit and hair – be sure to tell her. ;-)

43 Lauren from Indiana January 21, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Oh, how I love a good Caroline video. All the words! Oh, all the words! And please, pass along my compliments on her outfit and hair-no questions!

44 Lauren from Indiana January 21, 2010 at 12:04 pm

And Robyn from Alabama’s story? GOLD. I about fell off my chair laughing. The dog was looking at me like I had lost my mind!

45 Kim January 21, 2010 at 12:12 pm

SO so cute!!! She is full of herself. Tell her those little girls are jealous! Right or wrong, that’s what I tell my girls when they feel extra cute that day!

46 Jamie January 21, 2010 at 12:15 pm

She is adorable!!! I love “I just got in my jumping mood.” And you can tell her I love her outfit AND her hair!

47 Jennifer Perkins January 21, 2010 at 12:24 pm

what a little cutie. :o )

48 rebecca d January 21, 2010 at 12:42 pm

I laughed so hard… It brought back so many fun memories of when my girlies were little… substitute hula hoop for jump rope and I’ve lived that scene.
PS. Tell her she looks adorable.

49 Sarah January 21, 2010 at 1:28 pm

She is a total natural!! I absolutely LOVE watching her videos!! I was a lot like her as a kid, and brings back a lot of memories! Keep ‘em comin’!

50 Caroline January 21, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Haha so cute.. :) I loved it when she said “I just now got in my jumping mood.” lol… I haven’t gotten in my jumping mood today yet.. :)

51 Kari D January 21, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I almost never comment, but this deserves one. BRAVO, Caroline! BRAVO! And, I love the hair AND the outfit. And also, Robyn with the hair story above cracked me up too. Sometimes we all need to just stop whatever we’re doing and talk about our hair.

52 Married to an Aussie in OK January 21, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Holy crap, I so hear my daughter in two years when I’m watching this video… they don’t EVER shut up, do they?!? ;)

53 Melene January 21, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Caroline is a star! She’s got great hair, a fantastic wardrobe and an amazing personality to go along with her jumping mood! Thanks for sharing. It’s just not fair that they grow up and those kind of moments are few and far between-said by the mom of 11 and 13 year old girls.

54 It Feels Like Chaos January 21, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Hilarious video! Loved her honesty about the kind of things she wants people to say about her hair! She perfectly verbalized what all women want to hear but so seldom do!

55 Holly January 21, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Oh, please tell Caroline that I LOVE her hair and outfit! And I have absolutely no questions for her! :-)

56 AngAk January 21, 2010 at 5:19 pm

So cute, “guys…”, loved it!

and, better to be a jump rope counter than a nut sac counter, like at PW’s ranch. just sayin’.

57 Lacey January 21, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Love it! She is too cute and has the best personality. I love how she always has a great story!

58 Kensey January 21, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Could you have a cuter daughter?! I love it when you have videos of her – so precious!

59 Laura C January 21, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Whew, so many words. How does the jumping rope not burn of some off the need to talk so much?? I have a three year old (who is also named Caroline) and now I’m beginning to understand why my Mom couldn’t pay attention to every little thing I said all the time growing up.

She’s Precious. Isn’t amazing how much goes on inside the heart and soul (and comes out of the mouth of) of us girls in all of 2min and 22 seconds?!?

60 Jessica January 21, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Love it–what a cutie! Thanks for the smiles. :)

61 Angela January 21, 2010 at 9:57 pm

My husband and I loved watching that! Esp b/c we have boy #3 on the way, and girl talk is totally unfamiliar to us!!

62 Kelly January 21, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Are you sure she’s not, like, 16? I remember when I was about her age, my grandmother braided my hair, while wet, in french braids and let me sleep in it. I was absolutely THRILLED with the way it looked next day, especially since it was at straight as a stick normally (still is). By the way, that happened in 1969!! They always say styles repeat, huh?

63 Heather January 21, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Holy cow. That is quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever seen/heard. That kid has some serious spunk! I want to know how on earth you held it together during that whole bit without laughing!!!??? So cute. Thanks for the laugh. I needed it today:)

64 Mary Kat's Mom January 22, 2010 at 3:34 pm

I just love her! ! And I just love you for sharing things like this with us! Thank you! !

65 Sissy in Texas January 22, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Those mean girls were just jealous. They would be even more jealous if they saw you jumping with that beaded jump rope. Stylin’!

66 Jenn H. January 22, 2010 at 6:54 pm

It’s too bad she doesn’t have much personality!! ;) (I think the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.)

Thanks for sharing….

67 Valerie January 22, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Oh my goodness that girl is a hoot!

68 Alysa January 22, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I love how she takes so long to set up the jump roping event! She is hilarious!

69 Megan January 22, 2010 at 11:22 pm

She is so stinkin’ funny! I use to be on the jump rope team in middle school and we didn’t look near as stylish as she did.

Thanks for sharing! Totally made me laugh!

70 rutheee January 23, 2010 at 1:41 am

I LOVE your Caroline videos and I love Vimeo too. Did you know that after your video FINALLY loads and you wait in line for an our or 12 for it to convert, you can go to settings and choose a thumbnail for your title page. Not sure why I’m sharing that but there it is.

71 Ashley January 25, 2010 at 11:20 pm

First, let me begin by saying that she is precious and I am partial to her already since my daughter’s name is also Caroline. My Caroline’s jump rope days are still ahead of her, as she is only 17 months old.
And second, she reminds me so much of myself at that age! I was giggling watching this cute clip because I think I remember a simiular conversation between my mother and I about my daily wardrobe.
Love your blog. Your wittiness always makes my day a little brighter – thanks!
