When I got in my car to pick Caroline up from school yesterday the thermometer in my car said 80 degrees. EIGHTY DEGREES.
Welcome to South Texas, where one week it’s fourteen degrees and the next it’s eighty. It’s no wonder I can’t sleep at night.
To make matters worse, I made a trip to the mall and stopped in Forever 21 because it’s usually good for some cheap, trendy jewelry or some sort of little top, but you know what I saw instead?
Acid-washed skinny jeans.
Dear Forever 21, you ain’t right.
(I just tried to go to their website to pull a picture of the acid-washed jeans and their site is down. Honestly, it’s just as well because if you lived through the 80′s there is a strong chance that the sight of acid-wash might fry your retinas.)
Anyway, all the stores are filled with spring clothes and between that and the eighty degree temps, my fancy has turned to spring.
Here are a few cute things I’ve seen:
1. Coral v-neck and stripy scarf
At some point during Christmas vacation, Sophie and I were talking about movies. She’d watched The Proposal the night before and said I had to watch it and to make sure that I made note of Sandra Bullock’s outfit when she has on some navy cropped pants with an orange-ish sweater with a gray striped scarf. I believe her exact words were “IT WAS A REVELATION!”
And it was.
The orange-ish color was beautiful and the gray striped scarf was so unexpected, yet pulled it all together. It was, indeed, a revelation. Which is why I was so excited when I saw a very similar look in Boden’s spring catalog.
By the way, Sandra Bullock’s hair in the movie has also inspired me to let my bangs grow out. AGAIN. You know that means it’s only a matter of time before I fret endlessly about whether or not to cut my bangs or let them continue to grow. But for now, I’m over them. OVER.
2. Plaid a plenty blouse
I love this because it’s the perfect piece for spring, but would easily transition into summer with some white jeans.
3. Lush rosette top
I’m a fan of anything that is basically a soft t-shirt but takes it up just a notch. It’s the perfect thing to throw on with jeans and flip-flops.
If there is one thing I really don’t need it’s another trench-style coat. Yet I am powerless to resist their appeal.
The sad thing is it’s only January and already too hot for me to wear this. But, STILL, look at all the cute.
I like the whole bohemian thing this top has going on.
I have no idea what “balletomane” means. My theory is it’s Anthropologie speak for overpriced top with some tulle on it.
But, once again, they reeled me in.
I’m at the point where I’ve reached my personal expiration date for actually wearing this as a dress. It’s okay. I’ve accepted it.
But I’m thinking it would be a darling swimsuit coverup.
8. Starburst statement necklace
I’m in love. I’m in love with the floral statement necklace and I don’t care who knows it. And Deloris Petunia has some of the best ones I’ve seen.
I mean, how cute is this one made out of felt? I’m happy just knowing this kind of bright and happy exists.
I realize I’ve only listed eight items, but it’s all due to my GO TO BED AT A REASONABLE HOUR initiative.
Several of you have emailed me to ask if I know about Polyvore. The answer is yes I do and I plan to start using it some for Fashion Friday.
However, it takes a while for an old dog to learn a new trick. Wait. Am I the dog in this scenario?
Don’t answer.
Oh,and for some more fashion you can head to Musings of Housewife and see what Jo-Lynne has today.
Y’all have a great Friday.

Forever 21′s website is back up. I had to go there myself to see if it was true.
I was just making fun of some pictures a college friend put up on Facebook of a bunch of us in acid washed jeans. Which we had all tight-rolled. We were also noting that the shoulder seams on all our sweaters went down to our elbows.
At least they don’t have the high Z. Cavaricci waist band.
I just saw a girl with leg warmers over her skinny jeans the other day. I thought, “who let her out of the house like that? The eighties wouldn’t have even tolerated that crap.”
Hope you went to bed at a decent hour.
Ooooh, I love that boden scarf! My fashion picks of the week are up, unfortunately they aren’t as springy as yours. Our spring is still months away. Boohoo.
Oooo–you may have inspired me to go to the gym. Maybe.
It’s still cold in Virginia, but this is a good reminder that it will soon be Spring and no one needs to see me in my current state. LOVE the plaid blouse and the rosette top.
I loved Sandra Bullock’s look in The Proposal too. It was a revelation.
And I have seen a similar starburst necklace and I want it in the worst way. The one I saw was black and very elegant. I think I may have to go back and get it. Thanks for enabling me. LOL
Have a great weekend!
Loving Deloris’ stuff. So cute with a simple white All American T.
Can’t wait to put that one together.
If you want to see acid wash, just check the photos of our friends in high school on Facebook. Acid-wash & mullets…no wonder there was so much underage drinking in SETX.
Yes, I love the scarf/sweater combo AND Sandra’s (as if we are on a 1st name basis) hair in the movie. I had the exact same thought about my bangs last night when I was watching Heidi Klum on Project Runway on Lifetime WAY AFTER YOU WERE ALREADY IN BED.
I think I might tell my hair stylist that I want to move in that direction. Of course, I’m sure that she will tell me, as always, about the difficulties of styling “baby fine” hair and that I shouldn’t hope for the same effect as the picture. I think there is a conspiracy in Hollywood to create hair styles that the rest of us can’t possibly mimick. Or perhaps the actors/models just have great hair? (Or just a team of stylists and hairspray that we can’t see. Maybe I should point that out to my non-Hollywood stylist, eh?)
I was hoping you’d post where you got Caroline’s super cute outfit!
Oh wait, I didn’t say that right. “Carolline, you looked sooooooooo cute! Where did your mom get that super cute outfit?”
Oh, hey…you CAN wear the strapless smock dress!!!! Just go to Hawaii where most of the surfers walk around in bathing suits where you see their butt crack. You won’t feel silly at all.
Now what am I going to do with all of those strapless sundresses now that I’m back on the mainland?
I still think you could wear that strapless dress with a cute cardigan and strappy sandals. But, it would also make a great cover-up for the beach.
Fashion Friday always costs me money!
I am writing to report fashion faux pas this week. I’m not sure why I go into this store because I hardly every buy anything, but my fashionable and always cute friend Jenny gets nearly all her clothes there, so I am continually compelled to look. But I was in New York and Co. this week and spotted a knit sleeveless JUMPSUIT (say what?)and a DENIM SHIRT that was bleach-stained. The mention of acid washed jeans reminded me of this experience I’ve tried to block out for the past three days. Even more horrific was that the denim shirt was the old blocky cut that made all us girls look like we were wearing our dad’s shirt. I’m gonna go work out and try to get these images out of my mind. Have a good weekend.
My young-20-something cousin just had a link on her blog about how to turn your boot-cut jeans into skinny jeans. I told her I was not about to return to 1985 and I like my boot-cut jeans just fine.
here’s the awful jeans…bleccch!

AND, just for the record, i made fun of my husband, whom i met in 1997, for still having AND wearing a pair of these things.
seriously? what on earth are the people at forever 21 thinking?
ok but girls we have to admit that there is a difference in boot cut and these 14 inch wide hip huggers that are on the market now.
I want some PLAIN straight leg jeans, I have cute ankles, well muscled legs and I don’t mind my jeans touching them, as a matter of fact I prefer it, it takes the eye away from my mid section particularly when someone notices my lil bird ankles(seriously I have gained 40 pounds since getting married etc and every bit of it is from my hips to my boobs, not one ounce settled on any part of my legs to allow me to look any kind of proportioned.)
Anyways….i dont mind skinny jeans coming back…i dont have any intention of rolling mine or putting zippers in them again but actually touching my legs yeah I would welcome that.

OK, so if I already have the navy trousers and coral V-neck sweater (which I’ve never worn together and to do so never occurred to me even after watching “The Proposal”!) I’m a step ahead right? All I have to do is find the grey stripey scarf for less than $44!?
I had those acid washed zipper ankle jeans. In 1985. I would NEVER do them again!
I LOVE the Dolores Petunia Necklace! May have to make it work with the coral V-neck.
I think the Polyvore link needs to be fixed – I clicked and it took me back to Delores Petunia’s felt necklace.
Great FF – bring on Spring!
I’m sorry, but that Polyvore thing looks like a visor gone wild with a bedazzler.
How in the sam heck do you tie that darling striped scarf? Super cute though and that is so me. Maybe I’ll figure it out.
I love Forever21! I’m 29 with 3 kids, every time I go in there I feel like I’m being stared at. All the teens wondering what that old lady is doing in such a trendy store, lol.
Have you seen the online designer discount shops, Ideei, Billion Dollar Babes or Gilt? I have bought a few things with major discounts…60% +.
Right now the membership is free.
Here are the links! Check them out I know you will love it!

Ohhh…I forgot Rue La La. This is also one of my favorites.
Enjoy!

I betcha PW knows what Balletomane means. If I brush away the cobwebs in my brain I think I can recall it as a ballet term. That blouse looks like the ruffly thing she bought and then MM didn’t like. Maybe you could borrow it?
More horrors: I saw a cute young thing with her hair pulled back in a BANANA CLIP. where did she find that?
Can you believe the acid wash jeans are back?! I went in Rue 21 the other day just to look around and saw the same thing! WOW!
I am lovin that Jessica top! TOO CUTE!
LOVE LOVE LOVE that necklace!!!!!
Acid wash?!?! Yikes. Please God, don’t make me start pegging my jeans again. Or bring back those leggings with the elastic that went under my feet, which was worn with socks and flats. Or – horror of horrors – the jelly shoes I wore in elementary school!!
Any suggestions for those of us who are busty, but love the rosette top? I am a size 10 in body, but D in the chest, and this style looks like maternity clothes on me. (Which I wouldn’t mind, were I actually pregnant.) Sigh. Any ideas, or do I just continue to let this style pass me by?
I went into a Forever 21 store for the first time a few months ago.
I felt really, really old.
Thanks for the ideas! I get to spend my Kohl’s gift card this week.
I love Forever 21. The bottom of their bag says “John 3:16.” I know what John 3:16 is, but I am not sure why their company has it on their bags.
Twas very very good to hang with you this weekend.
And I dreamed about Caroline last night – no lie.
love mis
I went to Old Navy last week and I actually tried on some skinny jeans. (You know who should *never* wear skinny jeans? Women whose abs have housed four babies, that’s who.) I ran from the scene screaming.
First, let me say that fashion is not my gift. Apparently I was gifted with knowing where all small parts to old Happy Meal Toys are instead. (useful, but not chic). I was wondering if you could recommend a fashionable, small cross-body handbag (I spent a long time with my friend Google figuring out what to even call the object of my quest). Right now, I carry a glorified wallet on a string, and it isn’t pretty, though it does contain at least one dart from the recent Nerf toy Happy Meal series. I want to stay with something small and have no idea where to begin looking. Thanks for your consistent fashion intervention (I even watched your scarf how-to a few weeks ago.)
Thanks! (Heather in Tennessee)
