The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth

February 10, 2010

The night after we discovered Caroline’s first tooth was loose, I was helping her get dressed for bed when she asked me how long I thought it would be before the tooth next to her loose tooth became loose. I said, “Well, it probably won’t be too long because I can see the permanent teeth trying to come in. What usually happens is the permanent teeth push the baby teeth out of the way and that’s why they get loose. I bet that other tooth will be loose in no time.”

“Wow, Mama. Did you used to be a dentist?”

“No, I was never a dentist.”

“Then I guess you don’t really know then, do you?”

And she’s right. I had no idea what I was talking about or if any of it was even true. I just like to spout random pieces of trivia based on what sounds good. I’ve been doing it for years. It was a skill that served me very well throughout all the years I worked as a pharmaceutical rep. But my child totally called me on it.

When I picked her up from school yesterday, she walked out of the building with a HUGE smile on her face. A smile that revealed a little gap where her tooth used to be.

The Lost Tooth from Big Mama on Vimeo.

I have to make a few comments:

1. She is a fan of the extreme close up shot. We probably need to work on personal space.

2. I’m not totally sure that it was the first tooth she ever “growed”, but she liked the symmetry of that story so I’m sticking to it.

3. I know who Tilt is but I’m not sure when Caroline decided it was okay to drop the “Mrs.” from the name. Or if her name is even Tilt.

4. I do know that she was DYING for Tilt to pull the tooth and had mentioned it several times. Apparently, Tilt is the Mr. Miyagi of tooth-pulling up at the school.

5. I think she’s going to be disappointed to discover that her tooth fairy isn’t a high roller who throws around ten dollar bills like the tooth fairy at Trevor’s house. His tooth fairy probably drives a miniature Escalade and makes extra cash selling baby teeth on the black market.

“Drives a miniature Escalade” That’s FUNNY!!!

When “Probably $5 or $10″ is mentioned…I don’t think a couple of quarters is going to suffice, is it?

2 Christy February 10, 2010 at 1:27 am

She is so fun. I love the whole first tooth thing…she is quite the little thinker :)

Inflation has proved to be a problem for the tooth fairy hasn’t it….5 or 10 bucks…jeepers.

I remember a dollar being big money!

Oh the good ole days!

3 blogaroni and dees February 10, 2010 at 1:37 am

my favorite was “my mom’s a little bit crazy”! oh, the joys of a child’s reality. :0) wonder if it’ll ever occur to them that they miiiiiight have had a teensy role in our slow decline…

OH–and totally unrelated (i guess it could loosely tie into the “crazy”), but i thought of you saturday morning when i saw a teenage girl wearing a snuggie over her clothes in a restaurant. (not that you’d ever do that or anything. i could just hear an imaginary narrative from you about it in my head…)

4 Amy in WA (Texas transplant) February 10, 2010 at 2:01 am

This video is awesome! I especially love how she describes Tilt, “She’s a helper for the born sick children,” is that what she said? So, so sweet how she searches for just the right words. This is is just precious.

5 aggiejenn@ReflectingHim February 10, 2010 at 3:30 am

So cute! Wonder what my kids will be saying about me when they’re 6. Probably that I’m crazy, too. ;-)

6 Terry in Indiana February 10, 2010 at 5:29 am

I can’t help but think about a funny story my niece told me. When her child lost his tooth, they about forgot to have the Tooth Fairy visit and her husband quickly scrambled through his wallet in the dark and accidentally stuck a $50 bill instead of a $5 under the pillow. YIKES!!! Both son and parents were shocked at the generosity of the Tooth Fairy the next morning, prompting a discussion of how the first tooth was very special and not to expect such surprises for future tooth losses. Too funny!

7 Amy February 10, 2010 at 5:56 am

Hooray! The tooth came out. I love her description of the whole process. My daughter is 5 and has small spaces between her teeth from 3 years of pacifier sucking. She’s already obsessed with losing a tooth and tells me all the time that she lost one (while pointing to a space that’s been there forever).
:)

8 mia February 10, 2010 at 6:02 am

Oh sure.. I SO bet you left 10 dollars – and probably something extra to go along… we don’t want Trevor to be the leader of the tooth fairy generosity, now do we????

she is SO freaking cute !!

9 Jo February 10, 2010 at 6:07 am

Well…. I *am* a pediatric dental hygienist…and the adult tooth pushes on the root of the baby tooth from underneath, which resorbs the root and makes the tooth fall out. You were pretty close, for someone who doesn’t really know anything. So much fun to see how excited they are to lose that first one, especially when “all of the other kids, Mom” have lost one. Tilt sounds like a special person.

10 Pam February 10, 2010 at 6:20 am

My daughter was 27 when she had her first child….she was holdiing him
in her arms in the hospital and she look up at me and said “Mom how old will he
be when I yawn and then he yawns?”….. She still thought I held that valuable
information…..God Bless, Pam

11 Karen February 10, 2010 at 6:31 am

Yippee!! The tooth fairy doesn’t visit our house, but the tooth mouse does (Guatemalan tradition). Sometimes, if Mommy is busy and forgetful, it might take the tooth mouse a few days to smell the tooth–he’s awfully small, you know. And, maybe because the tooth mouse is small, he does NOT drive an Escalade and does NOT leave $10.

12 Sarah February 10, 2010 at 7:01 am

I love your blog – it always makes me laugh!

13 rhonda February 10, 2010 at 7:01 am

My man child #1 forgot to put his tooth under his bed, and hence, the tooth fairy forgot to visit. I so played it off that the tooth fairy does not come until you put your tooth under the pillow. He forgot again last night as well. I may get out of this cheaply!

14 joyce February 10, 2010 at 7:51 am

Hoping the Tooth Fairy remembered to stop by…occasionally the Tooth Fairy goes right to bed and forgets all about the missing tooth until they hear their disappointed child calling for their mama first thing in the morning. Then mama has to get all creative and figure out how to slip their hand under the pillow while consoling upset child.

15 Fran February 10, 2010 at 7:56 am

Precious thing….and then they get bigger and throw the tooth away days before finally telling you. :(

16 Kristyn Mostek February 10, 2010 at 8:15 am

I know my daughter’s first tooth she lost was the first tooth she “grew”, so Caroline is probably right. ;) Mine lost her 5th tooth last week (first front tooth–another big accomplishment) and she put it in her tooth pillow on her dresser before bed. When the tooth fairy went in to leave her $ (a dollar bill and a gold dollar coin) she had moved the pillow and the fairy had to wander quietly around the room and try not to curse. Then the dollar coin fell out before she found it and I was like, “Did the tooth fairy leave anything else?”

17 Jessica February 10, 2010 at 8:18 am

YAY! She is such a character. She is destined to be an actress – I just know it. I can’t help but smile when I see that you have posted a video of her.
PS: We DO drive a non-miniature Escalade (I have 3 children) – and we DID leave $10 for the first tooth plus a train, but ONLY because that is the most special. The next 6 only received $1 each and we were asked if the tooth fairy was suffering from the economy & Mr. Obama”N” like everyone else. :)

18 Gail @ Pandemonium in the Parsonage February 10, 2010 at 8:29 am

I make stuff up that sounds good, too! Mostly because my husband badgers me with questions on topics about which he knows (he KNOWS) I know nothing. So I make it up, and he stops it. It’s a good system.

19 Jill February 10, 2010 at 8:31 am

Wow, $10?! My tooth fairy clearly didn’t like me too well! Which must be why my first car was a $500 Dodge Shadow. I didn’t have a chance to save up all those “ten dollars’es” to get something better! ha ;) Caroline is so funny, I love when you post a video of her.

20 Becky February 10, 2010 at 8:34 am

She is a screech!

21 Michelle February 10, 2010 at 8:38 am

She is too animated! I love it! Now I’m wondering if my children (and Caroline, also) will love or hate these videos when they’re teenagers… :)

22 Aggiema (Michelle) February 10, 2010 at 8:45 am

Saw this on a friends FB a few days ago. This lady wrote that her daughter got $5 when she lost a tooth at her Dad’s house but the Tooth Fairy only left $2 when she lost a tooth at her house. Her daughter was indignant and put the $2 back under her pillow with a note that said “What Gives?” The Tooth Fairy took one of her dollars and left her a note that said “Don’t be Greedy!” LOL Loved it!

23 Amanda @ Serenity Now February 10, 2010 at 8:57 am

I think she’s a good story teller. It makes total sense to me that the first tooth you’d lose is the one you “growed” first. duh.

$10 for a tooth?! If my kids expect that, then I’m going to have to send them to live with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie b/c they wouldn’t notice another kid or two, and they can certainly afford to fork over $10 per tooth.

I’ll say this cryptically…what does the TOOTH FAIRY do with the teeth? Surely, she doesn’t have like a boxful of them? Perhaps she only saves the first one?

24 Melissa February 10, 2010 at 8:59 am

I love Caroline’s video. And if the tooth fairy is leaving $10/tooth, maybe I’ll just settle for dentures so I can pay for college for the kiddos!

25 Nan February 10, 2010 at 9:01 am

If it helps, I have heard, that barring trauma or accidents, they do usually loose teeth in the order they “grew” them. Not sure if that’s from my dentist or pediatrcian, though…

26 Kate February 10, 2010 at 9:01 am

Wow, don’t you have a problem with some woman at school pulling her tooth out?? That should be left to dentists and parents, not random school staff and faculty. I’d be freaking out about this woman’s hands in my daughter’s mouth (did she wash them first?? Did she wash them afterward? ewwww!!!) and if I was the woman there’s no way I’d put my hand in some kid’s mouth!

27 Karen February 10, 2010 at 9:02 am

When my daughter was little, she busted me once when she found my ‘stash’ of her baby teeth…wondering why I had them, rather than the Tooth Fairy. I quickly replied that Mommy’s like to keep their babies’ teeth for keepsakes, so they have to BUY them back from the Tooth Fairy. That’s how the Tooth Fairy makes enough money to be able to tuck those dollars/coins under their pillows!

Another thing, on more than one occasion, my kids would deliberately wait to have their teeth fall out at school. The school nurse kept these little plastic tooth cases on a necklace, so if a child lost their tooth at school, they could ‘wear’ their tooth all day for safe keeping.

28 Rena February 10, 2010 at 9:03 am

I’ll tell you nothin’ but the tooth.

A very good friend of mine told us that her oldest daughter asked her for Santa’s tooth this past Christmas. Santa’s baby tooth.

I kid you not.

And do you know what she did? She obliged. Well, with a little help of one of her friend’s son’s baby tooth.

That’s right! I’m still having trouble picturing her daughter telling everyone in Kindergarten that she got Santa’s baby tooth for Christmas in spite of the fact that Santa told her NO when she told him that’s what she wanted.

I’m not makin’ this stuff up. My friend was none too happy with that Santa. Although I can completely understand him not wanting to part with body parts for Christmas presents.

It’s the tooth!

Seriously.

29 brenda February 10, 2010 at 9:16 am

I think she’s right, you know. You do lose the first tooth first. That’s what I always thought but then I’m not a dentist so what do I know either?

30 Autumn February 10, 2010 at 9:17 am

That girl is a hoot! Congrats to her and thank goodness for Tilt!
After a while, the tooth fairy in our house had to take out a loan… too many teeth coming out!!

31 Cindi In Boston February 10, 2010 at 9:20 am

This has got to be one of your funniest entries! Caroline is a riot! I love when she talks to the camera and says “my momma’s a little crazy”.. LOL!

32 Susy February 10, 2010 at 9:34 am

My kindergarten principal pulled my first tooth…she was supposed to be the best tooth puller in the land. And I think I got 50 cents for it!
Caroline just cracks me up! I always love the videos with her…you never know what she is going to come up with!

33 Lauren Kelly February 10, 2010 at 9:39 am

She is tooooo stinkin cute!!!!!!!

34 momof8 February 10, 2010 at 10:01 am

Our tooth fairy only leaves one dollar (two for molars) and the kids still love it!

35 Heather @ Brace Yourselves February 10, 2010 at 10:03 am

Oh man! She is so cute and funny!

I think I got jipped as a kid, I got like 50 cents for a regular tooth and maybe a dollar for a big molar. I remember telling my parents that since that tooth was bigger it was worth more and I guess my dad thought that was smart and went ahead with more money.

I also remember that my parents forgot to be the tooth fairy a few times. Bummer. But my mom is a genius and always told me that even tooth fairies take days off work sometimes and to just put it under my pillow again. My young self thought that made sense.

36 Tori February 10, 2010 at 10:13 am

That video made me laugh at loud! She is so cute and just a natural ham. I love that she thinks you’re “crazy”! Aren’t we all?! :)
Congrats on the lost tooth Caroline!

37 Anna February 10, 2010 at 10:22 am

I had always given my son a dollar, quarter, dime, nickel & penny when he lost his tooth. When he lost his 3rd or 4th tooth, I had no single dollars in my wallet and my husband didn’t have any. Being the kind of kid he was (and still is at 15), I had to continue with the same combination. I snuck into my 3 year old daughter’s room to get a dollar, put it under the pillow and thought the Tooth Fairy had done her job (I was going to pay back my daughter). Well, the next morning, my son noticed that there was a little tiny purple “C” on the dollar – his sister’s initial. I tried to ignore it, but he showed his sister. Unbeknownst to me, she had marked each of her bills with a tiny little purple “C”…..just in case this ever happened to her. She threw a screaming fit that the Tooth Fairy “stole her dollars” and “somebody robbed my room”…….. It would have been so much easier to have just given him the $20 in the first place.

38 Marla Taviano February 10, 2010 at 10:25 am

Tell her to take the tooth the next time she stays with Mimi and Bops.

39 Debi February 10, 2010 at 10:39 am

Too cute. I only got quarters when I was a kid. I guess that’s what happens when you’re one of six!

Jessica, who is “Mr. Obama”N””?

40 Jessica February 10, 2010 at 11:47 am

My son calls him Mr. Obaman instead of Mr. Obama. He at least adds the “Mr.”, but I don’t know where he picked up the Obaman part. :)

41 Sonya February 10, 2010 at 10:58 am

$10! The tooth fairy must be selling those teeth she collects! Yikes!

42 Naomi February 10, 2010 at 11:10 am

Is it creepy that I wish you all lived next door so our daughters could play together? Maybe. But it’s true. :-)

43 Brickhouse February 10, 2010 at 11:17 am

I used to have a great-uncle that “pulled teeth.” I remember watching him wrestle his grandsons to the ground for their teeth (playfully, of course), and I vaguely remember one of them exclaiming, “Hey, wrong tooth!” So when I had my first loose tooth, I think I hid in the corner and refused to talk the ENTIRE time we were visiting them. He was a carpenter and was missing a couple of fingers, and I was SCARED TO DEATH to get one of his hands in my mouth.

44 Jacqulyn LeFevre February 10, 2010 at 11:31 am

OMG, she is the funniest. I love it. I can only hope my daughter is as funny as she is!!!

How much did she get anyway?

45 Amanda February 10, 2010 at 11:37 am

Yeah, Caroline! Thank you for bringing back memories of those awesome little treasure chests. PTL for Tilt!

46 rrmama February 10, 2010 at 11:44 am

Woo Hoo! Go Caroline!!! The main tooth puller as my sons school retired last year and she has pulled everyone of his teeth so far. She told us to come her house anytime we need a tooth pulled. A few months ago we went to her house and showed her a mouth full of metal! He got braces!!

47 Michele February 10, 2010 at 11:50 am

Well my Parker and your Caroline have something in common. They are both 6 1/2, both were convinced they would NEVER lose a tooth, and both just lost the first one! Congratulations Caroline!

48 Angela February 10, 2010 at 11:51 am

Bwahahahahahahaaa!! She is hilarious!

We watched this video at lunchtime whilst we were eating our Cheerios and peanut butter crackers. (Don’t judge…) Both my boys (almost 4 and almost 2) were mesmorized. ;)

49 Married to an Aussie in OK February 10, 2010 at 11:52 am

LOL! A gold dollar is the going rate here… not $5 or $10, for sure! That was fast to lose a tooth. Ours take months… but then, we don’t have Tilt to help, either.

50 Kari February 10, 2010 at 12:20 pm

My sister gave $20.00 for the first tooth and I asked her, “Do we actually have the same parents?”
We gave $2.00 and instead of being excited about getting the money…he accused the tooth fairy of stealing his teeth!!

51 Holly @ Crownlaiddown February 10, 2010 at 12:25 pm

“My mom is a little bit crazy.” Hilarious!!!

52 Tracy February 10, 2010 at 12:43 pm

What a hilarious post! When I was a kid (back in the dark ages) we got a quarter and a pack of Trident gum. No sugar you know. Our local tooth fairy set a BAD precedent when a tooth was lost very unexpectedly and the pixie only had five’s in her little bag of magic. Oi vey. Now, I think my puddin’ pie is chewing on rocks to make those suckers loosen up. The moral of my story is to always be sure you keep some singles in the bra drawer.

Thanks for the great laugh on yet another snowy day!

53 Jeanne M. February 10, 2010 at 12:46 pm

I just wish Caroline had more energy and could be expressive!
What a doll you have there — also, not a bit of lack of self confidence, either.
I’ll probably be watching her on her very own exercise/fitness program when I’m
at the retirement home in 20 years!!

Thanks for sharing these great times!

54 Sunni February 10, 2010 at 12:49 pm

$10 dollars for a tooth…..makes me want to pull all of mine right now. Hmmm???

55 Kim February 10, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Your daughter is something else! I loved the video!

I love a child’s skewed concept of money. While shopping with Kate, I feel like I’m always saying, “No, Kate we can’t get that it’s too expensive.” And to this she will say, “It’s fine Mama, Daddy has monies.” Yesterday she brought me 5 pennies that she found in her room, and said she wanted to go to the bookstore and get a “brand new book.” Sorry Kate it’s not the 1940′s.

56 abby February 10, 2010 at 1:50 pm

She is just too cute. DRAMA :)

57 pendy February 10, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Wish I had known about the tooth fairy who delivered books instead of cash. Of course, when my kids were that age, a dollar was BIG!

58 bailey February 10, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Coincidentally, this was just posted on passive aggressive notes: http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/2010/02/09/look-tooth-fairy-heres-the-deal/

59 Cydney February 10, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Love the video, She is a drama queen and you gotta love her.

She reminds me of my son because she can not be still. Too funny.

60 Charity Baillio February 10, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I laugh so hard every time I read your blog! Thanks for a great laugh today.

61 Rachael February 10, 2010 at 5:56 pm

The tooth fairy at my house leaves those fancy gold $1 coins from the bank. See, it’s only a dollar- but it’s a really SPECIAL dollar. (Eh-hem, word to the wise: buy a ROLL of $1 coins and keep them on hand, you never know when those little teeth decide to fall out!)

62 Amy February 10, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Oh Big Mama…..I read your post while the kids were playing in the other room and when I played the video, Gracie heard and came in here. She watched INTENTLY, and then asked to see about five other videos of Caroline that popped in the sidebar. Caroline is now her friend….though it’ll be a one-sided friendship :-)

63 AngAk February 10, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Gosh that was fast. I remember it seemed to take forever for a tooth to finally get loose enough to fall out/pull out. And, my sister once bit my leg and her tooth fell out. not recommending that though.

64 mzzterry February 10, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I am the “Tilt” of my neighborhood. I have actually pulled children’s teeth from kids that are not my own at the request of the child. It may gross some of you out, but it happened to me because I spend all of my time with children in various settings and kids seem to feel at ease with me. Once a little girl stopped me while I was walking around the block and she was riding her bike and ask me to pull her tooth (there was no parent at home, it was after school.) I pulled it for her. I supplied band aides, snacks and conversation for this same kid. I am the old school kool aid mom. We do exsist. Nothing crazy or perverted, just a mom that cares for kids and doesn’t mind pulling a loose tooth now and then. Bless Tilts heart.

65 Karen February 10, 2010 at 7:55 pm

COINS. Tell her tooth fairies only leave coins. The bills are counterfeit.

66 Rachel Scott February 10, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Pulling teeth make me feel ill. I feel like we always wanted to tie them to doorknobs when we were little and slam the door… ick.

I can’t imagine my baby’s sweet little teeth falling out, how amazing it is to watch children grow!

67 meghan @ spicy magnolia February 10, 2010 at 8:41 pm

I love the Caroline videos! And yeah for losing her first tooth! I’m sure you’ll have a great tooth fairy story to tell soon. I’ll pull my teeth for $10 a pop. Or not. :)

68 Kelly February 10, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Oh law, love that girl. Congrats on the loss of her first tooth. Good logic about it being the first one “growed”! Good luck with the $5 or $10. Thanks a lot Trevor’s mom…

69 Cathy February 11, 2010 at 9:27 am

You need to go see The Rock in Tooth Fairy, a very cute movie (total PG!).

70 Michelle February 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Although it’s not the first time and I know it won’t be the last, I just have to tell you that you’ve put me into that teary-eyed laugh out loud state…thank you!

71 AmazingGreis February 11, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Wow, $10. I’ve got a full set of adult teeth that I wouldn’t mind parting with for $10 a pop, where exactly does Trevor’s tooth fairy live? Just sayin’!!!

$10 is nothing, my cousin received $50 from her tooth fairy about a year ago for her first lost tooth. I was about ready to pull my teeth then too!

72 EmilyD February 15, 2010 at 3:27 pm

“My momma is a little crazy”…. if only she knew she was calling her tooth fairy crazy while hoping for BIG money!
What did she say about Tilt? A helper for the sick kids?

73 Kelly February 17, 2010 at 3:27 pm

We have had the same problem with the tooth fairy and inflation!!!! My nephew has a tooth fairy who brings $20.00 per tooth, so my son expected something similar. I had to tell him that Louisiana tooth fairies don’t make as much money as Florida tooth fairies! We solved the problem by leaving a golden dollar and a paper dollar… one to spend and one to save. By the third tooth he was questioning why he was getting the same thing each time, so he got two golden dollars and two paper dollars, which seemed exciting to him. That is where we are now. Hopefully that works for awhile!
