Fashion Friday: Edition let’s talk about spring trends

February 26, 2010

I’m over at my sister’s house right now babysitting my sweet nephew, Luke, while she gets a few things done. Like taking a shower and brushing her hair. I brought my computer because I thought it would be a great opportunity to work on Fashion Friday and it totally would have been if we had any idea how to get me on her wireless network.

I also managed to break her T.V. which is something I manage to do every time I visit. It really is a shame because it’s a very nice flat screen television that makes watching Regis and Kelly a delightful experience, but I have no idea how to work it and I always push the wrong button on one of the six remote controls.

And, while I’m making confessions, I’d also like to say that I have no idea how to work her baby swing. It says it swings eight different ways on fifteen different speeds, but how that actually happens is a mystery to me.

Anyway, I’m glad I’m here because Luke and I have been discussing all the trends for spring. He’s a little unsure if the striped look with a dinosaur emblem is going to take off.

But he’s positive that the hottest look for spring will be a sweet, sweet mullet.

His Uncle P will be so happy to hear this news because he was all about sporting a sweet mullet back in the late 80′s.

Sadly, I’ve only known him since he got rid of the party in the back.

The mullet isn’t for everyone though. So with that being said, here are a few other trends for spring.

1. Denim

Denim is everywhere right now. If the trend continues, it may just be a matter of time before we’re all back to wearing denim shirts paired with Santa Fe inspired wrap skirts with loafers and socks. Man, that was a good look.

But I’ve always been a fan of denim. There were about eight consecutive years of my life (okay, ten) where I always purchased some sort of denim dress and/or shirt.

And this year there are a plethora of denim items to choose from. Old Navy has a great dress and/or tunic made of denim’s stepsister, also known as chambray.

Gap also has a cute chambray drop-waist dress but it has some questionable pocket placement that may not work for everyone.

But there is still plenty of good denim to be had. There are so many great denim shirts that it makes me wish I’d saved one of the eighteen I used to own.

You could always go with a denim jacket. Or a fun skirt. Or (Jillian Michaels help me) denim leggings.

I hear they even make something from denim called jeans.

2. Neutral colors

Think soft shades of sand and taupe because that sounds better than beige.

I think this top from Nordstrom is so soft and pretty. It would be great paired with jeans or with nice pants and a jacket for a dressier look.

I love this dress even though I’d have to wear something under it. Or over it. And I also like this silk shirt and this ruffled tunic.

This outfit from Banana Republic really shows off how you can incorporate neutral pieces into your wardrobe without looking too plain and washed out.

And I’ve always been a huge fan of neutral colored shoes like these or these. They really elongate your legs and look great paired with dresses or skirts. But you can totally wear them with jeans, too. I don’t discriminate.

You may also want to find yourself a great neutral handbag. It will go with everything and eliminate the need to constantly switch purses. Not that I ever take the time to do that because what if I forget to move my wallet? Or worse, my lipstick?

3. Embellished tees

It all seems a little vague after the cold, wet winter we’ve had (Did you not see the five flakes of snow??) but if memory serves, it gets really hot here in the summer. And when it gets really hot there’s nothing better than just a nice cotton t-shirt or tank. Bonus points if it’s actually cute like this one from Boden.

You can go with something like this or this ruffled scoopneck tee. This one is really cute and I love this one from J.Crew.

Or if you’re a tank top kind of girl, there’s this petal trim tank, or a rosette tank, or this gorgeous garland tank.

4. Wedge heels

I seriously can’t count the ways that I love wedge heels. Maybe it’s a residual effect from a childhood spent wearing Yo-Yos or maybe it’s just because they come in so many cute variations like these from Piperlime.

And how about these darling ones in hot pink? Hello summer.

Love these colourblock wedges from Boden and that they’re British and spell color with a u. Speaking of color or colour, how cute are these bright orange ones?

This is totally off the subject, but does anyone have any thoughts on these?

I’m seeing these everywhere and I’m conflicted. On one hand, kind of cute. On the other hand, “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

So I’m torn.

5. Printed skirts

I think it was last summer that I declared it to be my summer of the skirt. The only problem was that I didn’t really have enough skirts to make it through the summer.

Oh but this year it’s going to be different because the skirts? They are plentiful.

I love this printed whirly skirt from Old Navy.

There are polka dot skirts, scenic skirts, and floral skirts.

There also happen to be some really cute plain skirts too. Nothing wrong with a little less is more.

Which is advice that would have served me well many, many words ago.

We’ll save the next five trends for next Friday. A sequel!

Y’all have a great week.

Yeah, those sandal things scream Spartacus. But that’s just me. I’m just excited that I actually own something on your list for once (cute plain skirts). Hooray for me!

2 Erika February 26, 2010 at 12:30 am

awesome! i am going to get the chambray dress…even if it is too small in the arms (as the reviews lead me to believe)…oh well, worth a shot!

Part of me wants to just keep commenting until someone else leaves one. Please forgive/excuse me. I’ve been working all night long with no end in sight, and I am punch. y.

Oh, girl. You have finally gotten me to come out of lurkdom to tell you how much I love you. We are the same age, and uh, apparently shared the same fashion sense in our youth! Today’s biggest chuckle, no, make that burst of laughter came when I recalled my not one, but TWO wrap around Santa Fe print skirts. And yes, of course, I wore them with a sleeveless denim button down blouse. No loafers and socks, though. I think I had some really, really cute flats with turquoise beadwork.

I love, love, love reading your blog. I have to read bits & pieces to my husband every night. You’re the best!

5 Kelsey S February 26, 2010 at 12:34 am

AHHHHH, I love that you featured the sandals! I lived in Spain this past summer and owned multiple pairs that (sadly) wore out. Meanwhile, I returned to this lovely country that hadn’t caught on to their comfort/casual dressy alternative. Love that they are finally here!

So, if you’re on the fence about them, don’t knock ‘em ’til you try ‘em. But they’re much easier with zippers in back…

(btw, LOVE the blog redo)

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Hands down, best 2 sentences on a blog ever. Hi.Lar.I.Ous.

Also, my 3yo calls Jeans “beans” and I hope she never ever outgrows that.

As you were.

7 Myrnie February 26, 2010 at 12:37 am

LOVE the pictures- thank you for putting them in!

(And your nephew might just bring the mullet back. It’s that good on him :)

8 OneGirl February 26, 2010 at 1:02 am

the skirt link for ‘cute’ isn’t working.

as for those, umm, shoes…unless you’re ankles are always cold, stay far far away.

9 Lacey February 26, 2010 at 1:14 am

Wow, I never realized how much Caroline looks like P! My little girl looks so much like her daddy too – I love it! I bought the blue and gray skirt from Old Navy last time I was there, it fits great and so comfy. I’m thinking I may need to check out the denim dress too, very cute!

10 Candice February 26, 2010 at 5:12 am

HOORAY for putting pictures of the clothes right in the post!! I love that!! Thanks for the extra effort…..

11 Amy February 26, 2010 at 6:01 am

Spartacus can keep his sandals. I don’t think I will be jumping on that trendwagon! However, I do love Boden and everything they offer. Too bad my wallet would not support that sort of addiction!

12 rhonda February 26, 2010 at 6:15 am

Sandals made me LOL. Love the denim from Old Navy! Your tips are helping save my fashion life. My family thanks you!

13 Monica February 26, 2010 at 7:04 am

Seriously…the Xena Warrior sandals? Never. Not ever. Not on a dare. If I were at the beach walking across the hot asphalt to my car I’d risk the burnt toosies. Sooooooooo very *NOT* Princess-like.

14 amy February 26, 2010 at 7:13 am

Last summer was the first time I had ever heard of Boden, and I fell hard for their sassy prints and cute embellishments. But…when I mentioned to several British friends that I had discovered their great store, they looked at me like I was nuts. They had never heard of it. Since then, I’ve been suspicious that all the extra u’s, as in ‘colour’ are a marketing ploy. How rude!

Dear Big Mama,

Please tell my sons (two of whom attend our–yours and mine– shared collegiate alma mater) that denim shirts are NOT merely worn by construction workers and loggers. Tell them that they are a timeless addition to a wardrobe and, if worn correctly, can still be cool. Cool as in…you know…awesome. It is their belief that only old hippies or middle aged people (sometimes that’s the same thing) wear denim and I even launched into an impassioned speech about the sturdiness of the fabric and how Levi Strauss invented it and…well…you’d have thought I was trying to get them to eat vegetables or something. I find denim to be very sexy and my sons have now turned up their noses (Aided by the college girls they listen to for errant fashioin advice. The same girls who wear skirts, flats, light sweaters and completely bare legs during a blizzard because it is “fashionable”–and uncool to actually wear winter clothing– and then expect our sons to give up their heavy coats when it becomes too cold for them. Don’t get me started.)
Please advise. I am desperate.

16 apathy lounge February 26, 2010 at 7:31 am

I think I left one of my sentences incomplete. That’s how much I love denim. Or maybe just can’t believe my sons do not.

17 Mitzi February 26, 2010 at 7:35 am

Okay, hate the shoes, but I’m not really the one to ask about fashion these days… kind of in a frumpy mom stage. What got me though was the pretty paint color at your sister’s house, behind sweet Luke’s mullet. Is that orange in her kitchen??? So cute!!

18 Lisa February 26, 2010 at 7:43 am

Ok, got to say I now like fashion Friday. I love the fact that you put pics up right in the reading….makes it so much easier and less time consuming. I know it is probably much harder for you and for that I am so sorry :) I will understand if you cannot do that all the time. You are I am sure a busy woman training for the bike race and all. :)

19 Jenny F. February 26, 2010 at 7:56 am

Good morning.. We were at Old Navy last weekend and my daughter was looking at those print skirts. She is about 5’10″ and her comment was that those skirts were too short for her height. They are very cute though. I love all the hair that your nephew has. It is amazing. My sister’s nephew had so much black hair when he was a baby that he was called Elvis.

20 joyce February 26, 2010 at 7:59 am

Just a caution on the embellished t…I tried one on in Ann Taylor which was adorable except the embellishment was so heavy it made the top hang wonky. Yes-its a word.

I was disappointed because it was really pretty but they were just a little too heavy handed with their bedazzler. It looked quite similar to the one you pictured.

21 Lorie February 26, 2010 at 8:19 am

I’m on the fence, too, about the gladiator sandal. I’m a little concerned about how my calves will look in them.

The wedge sandal? My heart just skipped a beat from the awesomeness.

22 scott February 26, 2010 at 8:22 am

I don’t normally read much less comment on fashion posts (I’m a guy AND I don’t know how to pronounce “chambray”) but I’m so happy to see that there’s finally footwear perfect for occasions involving vengeance.

23 Heather in BasVegas (aka Bastrop) February 26, 2010 at 8:43 am

Hating the chambray. Brings back too many bad memories from the late 80s, early 90s. I just can’t go there again & no one can make me!

Gladiator sandals, maybe. But surely not to the extent of those pictured.

Good golly Miss Molly, loving the hair on the nephew! I’ve never seen so much hair on a baby!!

Happy Friday everyone.

24 Cindi In Boston February 26, 2010 at 8:48 am

I love those brown wedges!!! I’ve been looking for cute wedges for spring/summer and have had a hard time not finding ones that don’t go to the middle of my calf! What’s up with all these peep toe wedge boots? I’m not a fan.
Anyway, thanks for posting!

25 Kim February 26, 2010 at 8:58 am

Gladiator was a great movie and Russell Crowe looked mighty fine in it. But the sandals have no place out of ancient civilization or a movie set!
My husband also sported the curls at the back of the neck in high school. Lucky for him they were gone by the time we met in college.

26 Ashley Bourg February 26, 2010 at 9:04 am

Those shoes=HIDEOUS!!!

27 Sarah February 26, 2010 at 9:05 am

I have no style sense so I enjoy seeing your Fashion Friday posts. But mainly I wanted to comment to say how cute your nephew is and how fast he (and his hair!) is growing. Love that little grin on his face. Sweet. And how fun for you that you live close to your sister and nephew (I’m in envy b/c I’m 1000+ miles away from my bro & niece)

Thanks for always bringing a smile to my face. Hope you have a great weekend! :)

28 Roxanne February 26, 2010 at 9:16 am

LOVE the chambray dress. I want it, gotta have it! Thanks for putting the pictures in the post, because I click on every single link!

Caroline looks JUST LIKE her daddy! All this time I’ve thought she favored you, but she’s P’s “spittin’ image” !!!

29 Rena February 26, 2010 at 9:21 am

This post makes me all kinds of happy. I’ve been looking online with great anticipation of my upcoming shopping trip. I’ve even looked at a few things you have shown here.

Thrilled about the denim and even the neutrals and especially the embellishments!

BUT THAT SANDAL? NO, NO, NO! I’ll leave the combat to my daughter and son-in-law. NEVER, EVER, EVER! It’s just all wrong! Giving me a good laugh, though.

OH, and that baby! Mullet and all! Sweetest thing! My new grandson has a little wisp of hair to swoop up just a little. That baby has so much hair. Makes him look older. Reminds me of my middle daughter. She was born with bangs. Kinda’ looked like a papoose. But we liked to call her Monchichi.

30 Rebekah February 26, 2010 at 9:24 am

Love mullets. My niece has one right now and and it’s mucho adorable.

I think a couple of weeks ago you mentioned something about shirt-dresses (which, not being a fashionista or anything close to that, I did not really know about). Anyway, but either that same Friday or the next one, we had a Valentine’s dinner at church and one of my favorite ladies had on your old navy chambray drop waist shirt-dress…or is that just a dress? I can’t remember. Anyway, but I thought it was cute then and I still think it’s cute now.

I also love the dress you said you’d need to wear something over or under? ME TOO sister!

And…there was something else, OH, the polka dot skirt? Saw someone with it on at church a couple of Sundays ago and was LOVED. IT. So cute!

Have a great Friday! :)

31 Emily/Miss Mommy February 26, 2010 at 9:29 am

I am a fellow Aggie (’01) and have followed your blog off and on for a few years. Don’t be offended that is hasn’t always been “on”- no fault of your own- just lots and lots and heaps of moves (okay 3 or 4) that have kept me frazzled and inconsistent. Regardless, now we’re in Scotland where the word “colour” is everywhere- as are lots of extra “u’s” no “z’s” and plenty of “y’s” instead of “i’s.” If only the Brits were as enchanted of us as we are of them. I’d get a lot more free stuff when an errant “y’all” escapes.

I will say I hate those sandals- tons around here- maybe I am biased b/c the Scottish climate is harsh and there is no reason that sandal shouldn’t be a fur-trimmed full-on boot. Ridonculous.

Cheers for the good read!

I received the Talbot catalog last night and swooned, totally beautiful.

33 Mary February 26, 2010 at 9:45 am

I don’t think I could wear the boot sandle. However, I am sure they will look wonderful on someone, someone other than me!

34 Lisa February 26, 2010 at 9:46 am

Your nephew-adorable and think the stripes and the dinasour emblem are a go!
It may just be a matter of time before we’re all back to wearing denim shirts paired with Santa Fe inspired wrap skirts with loafers and socks. Man, that was a good look.–oh do I remember these days, what’s not to like about wearing a skirt with a belt?
Love your blog, you never fail to make me laugh.

35 Jo February 26, 2010 at 9:55 am

Talbots…swoon here too. My fave is Dress Barn…poor woman’s Talbots. Of course I wear scrubs and white crocs all day, so what do I know?
I can’t hear the word “Spartacus” without thinking of this:

36 elz February 26, 2010 at 9:59 am

Ack, Fashion friday is too hard to read since I gave up shopping for Lent. Stupid, stupid decision.

37 Musings of a Housewife February 26, 2010 at 10:03 am

Oh my goodness I love that top from Boden. And I also love a good wedge sandal. In fact, I think my spring 2010 wardrobe needs a new wedge sandal. In fact, I am drooling over these at the moment. http://is.gd/9eNPc

And I really wish I could pull off the swirly skirt, but I’m a pencil skirt girl. Oh well, when I get to heaven I will rock the swirly skirts. I’m sure of it. :-) Happy fashion friday!

38 Musings of a Housewife February 26, 2010 at 10:03 am

Sheesh, I might proofread before I post a comment that says in fact, two times in a row. @@

39 Musings of a Housewife February 26, 2010 at 10:04 am

AND that’s not a wedge actually. Okay, I will stop commenting now.

40 Melissa @ Anxious for Nothing February 26, 2010 at 10:24 am

Yessss…I just bought a denim-looking maternity dress (I’m 5 months pregnant)…it’s actually made of a stretchy cotton blend. So nice to know I’ll be in style. ;-)

41 Erin February 26, 2010 at 10:26 am

Big Mama – I am so in love with that embellished Boden tank! I just ordered it, but first decided to check out retailmenot.com for a discount code – and it worked like a charm! Here’s 15% off & free shipping for Boden – enjoy!! BF51027X

42 melissa from girlymama February 26, 2010 at 10:28 am

i agree — can NOT do the gladiator sandals. i’m in LOVE with wedges though!
my fashion post this week is spring dresses – i have like 5 events this summer where i need a cute dress. DARN ;-)
http://www.girlymama.com/2010/02/fashion-friday-spring-dresses.html

43 Erin February 26, 2010 at 10:39 am

This may be the first time I have ever read a fashion friday post to my husband. Because I am all about spreading the Gladiator goodness.

I think those shoes are hideous but then I’m not much of a risk taker. Translation: I’ve worn the same pair of flip flops for three summers straight.

44 Kari February 26, 2010 at 10:40 am

Not a fan of the gladiator shoes. Why do they remind me of KEDS…must be the extreme flatness and look like they would hurt your feet.

45 Jenna February 26, 2010 at 10:41 am

I love your Fashion Fridays! I look forward to sitting down and reading them every Friday! I also love the fact that you incorporate so many things from OLD NAVY!! I work their part time and they have such cute things in for spring and summer right now! Love the items you have picked this week! Have a wonderful weekend!

46 Susan February 26, 2010 at 10:44 am

Great fashion finds!! Thanks for helping us get those spring wardrobes ready!

47 Big Mama's Mama February 26, 2010 at 10:54 am

OK – so you were at your sister’s house yesterday! Did you guys have the ringer on the phone turned down, or did you check caller ID and both decide you didn’t want to visit with Mom? Loved the pictures of Luke! Isn’t he just the best ever little boy baby you ever saw? Hope you guys got the TV “fixed” before Luke’s daddy got home. Sure enjoyed my brief visit in San Antone! Hope to talk to you soon! Luv – Mom (aka Grani-Suz in Oklahoma)

48 Lauren Kelly February 26, 2010 at 11:05 am

I have to say, every single item that you listed is cute. But by far, the cutest item is that sweet Nephew of yours!!! :)

49 Heather February 26, 2010 at 11:26 am

*sigh* Remember when we were trying to figure out how to incorporate BOLD COLORS into our neutral clothes? My how time flies.

50 cheryl February 26, 2010 at 11:28 am

My little boy has the same blue/brown football outfit that your nephew is wearing! I just love the blue/brown combo on lil fellas! So Sweet!

Hate the Gladiator sandals!!!

51 Ginger February 26, 2010 at 11:44 am

Love the dressy top, and I sooo need a new dress!

52 Amanda @ Serenity Now February 26, 2010 at 12:27 pm

So tell me more about this phenomenon you refer to as “jeans.” ;)

Loved this post! So many funny things…starting with P’s mullet. Does he know you posted that?! Too funny!!

I think I might rock that Gladiator Maximus look. I loved Gladiator…except for the fight scenes. I realize this was a large chunk of the film, but RC made up for it his hot dirty Gladiator-ness.

Love the wedges. Love!

53 abby February 26, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Cute stuff! It gets me excited for warm weather!! I like how you’re posting pictures in each category! Good touch!

And those sandals?? You would not catch me dead in those. I’m not a fan of the flat gladiator sandals and these are even worse! I mean, think about those sweltering hot days of summer whether you’d like a leather ankle warmer on! Bleh!

54 Julianne Byle February 26, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Off todays topic, but this showed up in my facebook page. I think someone at HEB is following your blog : )

H-E-B You’ll find a new type of deal in store this week. We call it Texas Showdown!

Buy Fritos Corn Chips (9.25 oz. assorted varieties) and get free H-E-B Corn Chips (9.75 oz. assorted varieties) with in-store coupon.

Another un-fashion related question. I am seriously considering a dark orange for some walls in my kitchen. I saw it on House Hunters last week. I have black appliances, however, and don’t want my kitchen to scream HALLOWEEN! I noticed some orange-ish walls at your sisters house. Does she have stainless appliances or another color? THANKS!!!!!

Julie

55 Melanie February 26, 2010 at 1:15 pm

I believe the sandals were invented by someone with flip flip envy. She must have great toes but some kind of ankle deformity which must be covered.

Just a theory.

56 Kim February 26, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Dang girl! You worked hard on this edition of Fashion Friday. My mind is bulging with hot spring looks. Because I’m basic and boring, I think my favorites were the neutrals and that awesome chocolate brown wedge that you have pictured! Nice job!

57 Annette Standrod February 26, 2010 at 1:58 pm

first of all, your daughter looks a lot like her daddy. second I am so glad old navy has cute stuff. I really liked the rosette tank. which made think you could just pin a cool fake flower on the plain tank tops I already have. hmmm… we’ll see how that turns out this summer.

58 Nicole February 26, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Where did that child get so much hair?! Wasn’t he just born?! He does wear it well. Did you see the denim, haulter, jumpsuit on Boden? I’m speechless. OK, this makes me want to SHOP!!!! Have a good weekend.

59 Heather @ Brace Yourselves February 26, 2010 at 2:47 pm

At the risk of outing myself as what some refer to as a youngin I must say this: The last time I wore a denim shirt I was 10, my sister was two and our shirts had black velvet collars with rhinestones. We wore those bad boys with leggings and matching velvet scrunchies. Thanks Mom for making 10 year old me match my 2 year old sister. Torture!

Do you think you need to weigh like 15 pounds to wear the chambray dress from ON or can a normal person wear a drop waist?

Also, those shoes give me a big old Maximus vibe, sorry!

60 Fran February 26, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Please…. I’m begging you…DO NOT buy the sandals.

61 Kim February 26, 2010 at 10:06 pm

The Maximus Decimus Meridius sandles are very popular here too. I included a photo of a pretty purple pair in a post back in January: http://kimfromthesouth.blogspot.com/2010/01/project-365-week-2.html
I just can’t get past how hot your ankles would get if you wore these in the summer. And they’re obviously summer shoes. The ones I’ve been seeing are real leather and suede. HOT! And I don’t mean in a too-sexy-for-your-whatever way.

62 Amy February 26, 2010 at 10:07 pm

RE: “those” sandals- my thoughts exactly… saw them in a store last weekend, held them up and and said “honey, can I buy these?” the look on his face was much like when I ask him to clean the litter box…

63 Mindy February 26, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Can’t get into the gladiator look……I just can’t

64 Jennifer Moore February 26, 2010 at 11:44 pm

Aww. Your nephew is adorable. My baby girl sports the mullet look too. Although the sides and front are starting to get longer now. Do you have any advice on trimming the bangs of a 4.5 month old?

65 Shelly the Chic Crafty Chick February 28, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I love the top with the beads and I’ve been in search of the perfect one. They are so Real Housewives of the OC to me. I love that look. I want to find one in turquoise because I just bought a fabulous cuff bracelet and one of those tops would be geat with it. Do you ever buy an accessory and then say you have to buy an outfit for it, or am I the only one? LOL
