Fashion Friday: Edition the rest will have to wait until next week

August 27, 2010

So I had these grand ambitions to cover at least five of the trends for fall today. But then I remembered that I have to leave my house at 7:00 a.m. and I might want to pack a suitcase some time between now and then. It doesn’t help that it’s also just been one of those days.

However, I managed to muster the strength to talk about three of the fall trends. I’ll also tell you that Gulley and I went shopping yesterday and both agreed that we felt like we were looking into our closets circa 1991. We even saw a sales girl wearing a lace dress with a denim vest over it. I owned that outfit once upon a time.

I don’t tell you that with pride.

1. Boots

If you’re only going to buy one new thing this fall, I’m going to suggest that it be a pair of boots. And, let me tell you, there are boots galore to choose from.

There are over-the-knee boots

And lace-up boots

And more lace-up boots

There is the lace-up bootie that makes me feel a little nostalgic for those Esprit boots I used to wear during my junior year of high school with the built-in wool sock things sticking out of the top.

There is ankle bootie. They frighten me a little because I’m not sure what to do with them.

(When I just proofread this I realized I should have written, “there is the ankle bootie”. But it made me laugh that I wrote there is ankle bootie, so I’m leaving it. Watch out for ankle bootie. You don’t want ankle bootie.)

(I’m sorry. I’m very tired and a little punchy.)

And there are boots with spats. I’m a little obsessed with these.

Lastly, there are riding boots. I am such a fan of the riding boot. It’s a classic that will withstand the test of time and fashion whims.

2. Lace

Gulley and I were in Nordstrom yesterday and I saw a lace bodysuit. It was very similar to this Back to Lace-ics Onesie except it had long sleeves. I pointed it out to Gulley and laughed and said, “Remember when you used to have one almost exactly like that in college?”

And she replied, “That wasn’t mine. It was yours.”

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Anyway, as it turns out I should have saved it. I could sell it on ebay or something for tens of dollars because the lace is everywhere right now.

Dahlia tunic

Discovered lace dress

Lace is for Lovers top

My only advice is to remind you that nothing feels worse than cheap lace against your skin. Except for maybe freshly shaved legs at the beach. Or alcohol on a paper cut. Or biting into a water chestnut.

3. Military Influences

The military jackets are everywhere. There are dressy ones and utility ones. They even have them in camo.

Rag & Bone Cotton Safari jacket

Maybe I’ve been married to P for too long, but I actually really like that jacket. Of course I could probably find the same one for $30 at Cabelas. Along with a cheaper version of these Prada camo riding boots. Too bad they don’t have the leather snake detail like P’s.

But if the thought of camo frightens you, there are other ways to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

Sanctuary Military jacket

skinny cargo pants (I haven’t actually tried these. I’m not sure why any woman over the age of six would want to add bulk to her legs with pockets and have them taper to a skinny little point at the bottom. It seems like it might make your legs look like they defy the laws of physics. And taste.)

We the Free Majorette jacket

Do you see how I got too tired to actually upload pictures here at the end? I totally would except I really don’t want to right now. I have to go to bed.

And catch a flight.

And try to forget that I was the proud owner of a lace bodysuit.

Y’all have a great Friday.

Erika, I’m with you. I read every Friday with high hopes that I will actually purchase something besides black t’s and jeans, it just never happens! I do have some great boots that I bought at the end of season last year, maybe that will spice up my t-shirts!

I quite agree – the riding boot will never go out of style. I look at the boots with spats and I can’t help but think of the story “Puss in Boots”.

I like the riding boots! Had funny with a laugh at the lace onesie. On the fence with the boots w/ spats. Not sure about those….Have a great trip!

Thanks for at least showing me what the trends are! Maybe one day I’ll be able to fit this post-baby body back into something that’s not elastic-based–there’s always hope! But, seriously, can you believe they’re actually calling the bodysuit a ONESIE?? That word just brings to mind images of spit up and diaper blowouts, my wise marketing friends! If you’re potty-trained, it’s a bodysuit!

My fashion splurge this season will be riding boots. No question!!

(I’m a bit wary about the lace… very hard to pull off!)

I’m talking fall dresses for fashion friday today!

I fear for my Fall – every year I have the dreaded “Fashion Identity Crisis” – you know, what the bleep does a (insert age) year old SAH mom wear that is functional and still cute????!!!!! I don’t usually stray from my Germanimal ways. All the 80′s early 90′s stuff scares the tar out of me. Once is enough, people!!! Anyway, have a great weekend!

“Ankle bootie” made me snort. Paired with toe cleavage, it could get you arrested.

9 MelissaD August 27, 2010 at 8:38 am

I saw two teenagers with a Hypercolor T-shirt at Kohl’s yesterday. They were SO excited. ;)

I like the ‘Lace is for Lovers’ top. But the lace body suit …… please say it isn’t so.

Those Melissa buttons have been beckoning me for two years now. Frye, how I love thee.

I also had a long sleeved lace bodysuit (I believe it was DKNY) at A&M circa 1992. I wore it under a large faded denim Gap button down. One time, for reasons I can’t recall, I was wearing the lace bodysuit without having clasped it and the ends of my voluminous denim shirt somehow raised enough to expose the flapping ends of my lace “onesie”. My mortification was complete when I realized my flapping onesie ends had been seen by an unsuspecting male who happened to be over at our apartment to watch a football game. “What are you WEARING???” he asked in horror. I can only assume he had troubling flashbacks while dressing his newborn years later. Sorry Sean.

Is it weird to anyone else that recent trends of the “romper” and the ankle “bootie” are also words we use for newborn clothing? When I started reading your post I never actually expected your post to include the word “onesie.”

If “diapers” start trending, I’m out. Or maybe I’ll be extremely happy…

Have a great trip!

OOH how I love boots!! I’ve been dreaming about them for a week or two now, I gotta get me a new pair. I’m thinking some riding boots…or maybe over the knees!

Anyway since it’s still brutally hot here in Houston I’m not ready to talk fall fashion yet…I’m talking end of season bargains for my fashion friday! http://www.waterwatereverywhere.net/2010/08/end-of-summer-steals-and-my-1530.html

15 missy August 27, 2010 at 11:21 am

long live “ankle bootie!” thanks for the laugh…and the fashion advice to boot (pun, though lame, very much intended)

16 Joyce August 27, 2010 at 11:46 am

maybe you’ve mentioned it here before but have you ever been on the website endless.com…my daughter told me about it and they have name brand boots at discounted prices. I haven’t ordered from them but she saw a pair of Frye boots she wants and they were half the price there.

might be worth checking out if you haven’t already

17 TracyS August 27, 2010 at 12:08 pm

For the love of all that’s good and fashionable…now we have lace and ruffles? I seriously may have to wear nothing but boots this fall. That sight would fix those desigeners up right quick.

Love the boots, especially the first two.
Can’t wait to hear about the rest of the Fall trends next week :)

19 pamtastic August 27, 2010 at 7:56 pm

My friends and I were discussing this very same thing today! I said I’ve lived thru the 80′s once and I really don’t want to do it again…let’s hope these trends continue to become more modernized before I have to dive into them again…please!

20 Alysa August 27, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I love this post for so many reasons. First, I have seen so many things being worn that I owned in sixth grade, the best of which was a slap bracelet. Second, I totally had the boots with the wool things on top (in sixth grade I think). I saw some in the mall last year and couldn’t believe it. Third, I love the snake boots reference, that still cracks me up. And fourth, Forever 21 sells bodysuits and I can’t not call them “onesies” since I have a 16-month-old who wears onesies.

Thanks for the giggles ;)

21 Amy P August 27, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Did you watch Project Runway last night? Because it’s like you are channeling that episode. Good to know that you agree with tim gunn’s assessment of fall trends. :)

22 MarytheKay August 28, 2010 at 12:23 am

Sometimes, I like to think that for a 40-year-old (EEEKK!!), I am fashion conscious, and kind of “with it.” (I’m giggling, because the fact that I JUST SAID “with it” already tells you that I AM NOT.)

Then, I see some pictures of things that are actually IN STYLE, and I feel like a mamaw. The lace pictures and even most of the boots tell me that I need to find me a new flower print snap up robe and start shuffling around house in my baby blue slippers.

23 Amy August 28, 2010 at 7:20 pm

I bought the Naughty Monkey boots last week when I saw them on your blog and I LOVE them! I work in retail and they are comfortable enough for me to wear them to work, even during the busy Christmas season when I have to be on my feet for 12 hours a day!

24 Terri Jewell August 29, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Love the Frye boot and I totally agree with you on the water chestnuts…..YUCK!

25 Jill August 29, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Love the review…am warming up to the lace…by the time I wear it…it will be OUT!

26 Amy August 30, 2010 at 10:26 am

The style right now is like taking a step back in time to when I thought I was so cool and had so much “style”. I went shopping with my daughter and told her numerous times that I had that same outfit when I was in school. She looked at me in horror. The thought of her mom in a jean topped ruffle bottom mini skirt was too much for her to handle. I told her we could find the same outfits in the attic and it would save me a ton of money! She did not go for it. I might get them down anyway and add them to her closet. She would never know the difference!
