Totally righteous workout mix redux

I cannot believe I am going with that title, but it made me laugh when I typed it out and so it’s a stayin’.

And I feel like I need to state upfront that I realize this is at least the third time I’ve written a post about songs I listen to while I work out. In my defense, at least two of you asked for it after I admitted to the convoluted list of songs I listened to in the car on my way home from Kerrville. Not to mention that I have to constantly rotate my workout playlist because I need new music to drown out the voice screaming in my head, “STOP RUNNING, YOU FOOL. YOU’RE GOING TO DIE.”

That voice also likes to yell, “THE HEAT! MY WORD, THE HEAT!”

She’s a total drama queen.

So here is my list of songs for the current week. If you’re keeping track, I’m on Week 3, Day 3. I think I lost a day in there somewhere but I can’t think about it for too long or it makes my head start to spin because it feels like a math problem.

1. Undignified – David Crowder Band

I like to start with a little upbeat praise music. This is what I listen to during my five minute warmup.

2. Tik Tok – Ke$ha

And then I quickly digress to waking in the morning feeling like P. Diddy. I’m sorry. It has a good beat and I can dance to it. Or run to it. Or whatever.

3. 4 Minutes – Madonna with Justin Timberlake

This is on every workout mix I have. The real key to this song’s success is Justin Timberlake. Obviously.

4. California Gurls – Katy Perry

I don’t even know what to say. I have sophisticated taste in music.

5. Circus- Britney Spears

I’m just being honest.

6. Your Love is My Drug – Ke$ha

I find it ironic that I have two songs by Ke$ha on this list and I couldn’t point her out in a crowd. Nor did I even know she existed until about two months ago. I also cannot explain why she spells her name with a $, but I may start doing the same thing.

It’s very cla$$y.

7. Mine – Taylor Swift

And this is when my cool down section begins and the lady that lives inside my iPhone lets me know that I can stop running and live to see another day. This is a happy moment for me and deserves a happy song.

8. How He Loves – David Crowder Band

Do you love how I bookend with David Crowder? I’d like to say there’s some strategy to it, but I just like to end my workout with this song because it gets the rest of my day off to a good start. A reminder that I am loved in spite of the fact that I look like Ed McMahon by the time I get home.

Why Ed McMahon?

Why not?

And that’s my list. If you have some great song suggestions, leave them in the comments. I’m always looking for new ones and you’ve probably realized by now that I’ll listen to anything. Even Barry Manilow. Because he writes the songs that make the whole world sing.

On a related note, several of you emailed me the news clip about the woman in San Antonio who was trapped in her garage by a spider monkey. Apparently the monkey, also known as W.C. Fields for reasons I don’t understand, is still at large.

I’m just going to go on record and state that if I am confronted by a spider monkey during my morning workout, the Couch to 5K program will be dead to me forever.

And heaven help that monkey if it shows up at our house. P would have that thing shot, stuffed and placed in our bathroom to hold rolls of toilet paper in its little taxidermied arms before it ever knew what hit it.

We don’t take kindly to monkey intimidation around these parts.

    Nice song list!

I ‘d have to add “Kevin Rudolph Featuring Lil Wayne – Let it Rock” and “Kanye West – Stronger” Both very upbeat and great to workout to. I could actually keep going, but I won’t….

How sad is it that I don’t know most of the songs on that list? I’m so out of touch… :)

My current running list contains a couple you already have on yours…..Don’t laugh…..but some good, fast, “please help me to keep running” songs on mine include: Pink (“Please don’t leave me”), The Ting-Tings (“That’s not my name”), House of Pain (“Jump Around”—a must have, as it reminds me of my carefree college days and the role Keystone Light played in my perceived ability to dance to that song), and various others by Britney Spears, Eminem, Beyonce, and the Beastie Boys. And by the way, I feel your pain. Training for a 1/2 marathon. Ugh. It’s not pretty. Good luck!

    Vicki says:

“because it feels like a math problem.” So funny!

  5. 5
    Marley says:

Sometimes I use Mike, “Love Today,” which is really fun and fast. Also, K’naan, “Waving Flag,” is a great song to work out to!

  6. 6
    Michelle says:

Maybe if I get all your songs on my playlist then I would actually work out… maybe. And if said spider monkey is captured, I vote for a small set of cymbals to go between his arms!

    Monkey intimidation? Love it.

    Molly Pearce says:

I nearly choked on my coffee reading about the monkey! My music mix has a mixture of Backstreet Boys, 80′s and some Nysnc, all because it brings back memories of me and my bff Mary that now lives about 3 or 4 states away from me (notice I can’t seem to remember how many states away from me she is, ha) and we would loved us some BSB and Nsync in our youth. She had a Ford Escort that the AC went out on it and she bought two fans one for her and one for me and she glued them to the dashboard so we could be cool in the NC summer. Oh yes we were styling and profiling I might add rolling in the Escort! But back to the music, my mix always gets me going, especially some old school JT!

Laughed through the whole thing. I think I may start signing off as T@r@.

    Jill_in_AL says:

I’ve got several of those too…..you forgot Dynamite by Taos Cruz. It’s my new favorite and as of last night my new ring tone too! Yes, I’m 42 and probably having a mid-life music crisis.

    Renee says:

I have heard a lot about the couch to 5k app lately and know of some people using it with great success. However, I don’t have an iPhone (gasp!) and heard about it too late to do much good. But I have been training on my own since the spring (I know, that’s kind of a long time) to do a 5k and am thrilled that I am finally making it happen this weekend and again in a few weeks. I absolutely do not like running, but I do like reaching goals so that is what keeps me going. Now I just hope to be able to run the entire thing and not walk toward the end. I’m still searching for the runner’s high everyone talks about. And I run with no music – almost unheard of these days I think. I like to listen to my incredibly loud breathing I guess!

    Good luck to you!

  12. 12
    Lindsay says:

I am doing Couch to 5K and I was rocking out to Ke$ha on the treadmill last night too. For some reason her songs get me moving. Tay Swift also made my rotation.

    I also like…

When I Grow Up by the Pussycat Dolls
Blowin Me Up by JC Chasez
    Dirrrrty by Aguilera
    Say Aaah by Trey Songz
    I’m a Slave by Brit

  13. 13

I listen to a lot of horrendously dirty and foul rap when I run. This is ridiculous since I’m a total goody two-shoes and only listen to Christian and country in the car, but put some running shoes on my feet and my phone in my bra and I can’t get enough Juvenile and Sir-Mix-A-Lot.

      Kimberly says:

Erin, I seriously thought I was the only one. Thank you for admitting this. Hello my name is Kimberly and I love running to music that would make my mama disown me. My husband calls it my “Hate Track”.

  14. 15

First off – songs that make me move:
-Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas
-Imma Be by Black Eyed Peas
    -Body Rock by Moby

Secondly – I totally made the monkey intimidation comment my facebook status for the day!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  15. 16
    Staci says:

Ha! I can soooo relate! I am doing C25K, and I am on Week 8, Day 2. Now running 28 minutes, with a 5 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool down. So I had to add a couple more songs to my playlist. Guess what made the cut…that’s right…Kenny Loggins – Footloose! GREAT for that last quarter mile before cool down. Also added I Gotta a Feeling by the Black-Eyed Peas. :) Good luck!

  16. 17

Thanks for sharing your list!! David Crowder has a new single out (Rise Up) that I think is GREAT to work out too. As an Aggie, you might find it difficult to listen to the song, because it was indeed written for Baylor football (Sic ‘em!), but the song is free off the Baylor website, and it’s good! I love DCB, and this one is especially upbeat!

  17. 18

I love Undignified. How about Kenny Loggins–Danger Zone? I used to run to the Top Gun soundtrack when I was in high school (which is also the last time I ran with any regularity/for any respectable distance).

  18. 19
    daniella says:

The last three sentences of the post had me rolling on the floor. I think I need a rifle now.

As for the workout playlist, I say you get yourself some Pat Benetar, Bonnie Rait and ABBA in there.

  19. 20

Never heard of Kei$ha, but I’ll sure pop over and check her selections out. It makes me want to sign my name Ju!ie. I recently downloaded (or is it uploaded) some new tunes onto my iPhone, that I think you’d like. First, a disclaimer though… this first one has been in my head for the past four days and I cannot get it to go away. It’s called Billionarie by Travie McCoy. The others I added are – Why Can’t We Be Friends? by War (it’s my personal tribute to the ellipitcal machine), City On Our Knees (for obvious reasons), If We’ve Ever Needed You (because I never do an iTunes run without some offering from Casting Crowns), Hey Soul Sister by Train, Before The Morning by Josh Wilson, and All Of Creation by Mercy Me. Just typing these songs makes me wish I was at the gym on the bike. Maybe I’ll go there now. Or tomorrow.

  20. 21
    MarytheKay says:

Thanks for the music list! I love your selections. Okay, I admit. I don’t know what they all are. But they SOUND really great. I’m proud to say that I have at least *heard* of all the sangers.

If only someone would download all the songs for me today, and put them on my Droid phone. Is it totally lame for me to admit that? There is a big business out there somewhere that downloads songs for users according to their music taste, and gets their iPod or phone all set up for them. I bet they even plug in the earbuds.

Big Mama, I just want you to know that you are whipping the entire United States into shape with the Couch to 5K (or is it 5K to Couch?) program! I, too, have joined the ranks and signed on to the torture–all from being inspired by your, well, inspiring story.

My future self thanks you. My current self? Eh, she wants to go back to bed and forget she ever heard the words Couch and 5k.

  21. 22
    Jill says:

My 2 favorites for workouts: “Gold Digger” by the Glee Cast, and “It Takes Two” by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock…..clearly I like at little rap with my cardio even if it’s old school.

    • 23
      Beth says:

Have you seen the Proposal where Sandra Bullock is rockin out to “It takes Two” Best part of the movie!!!

  22. 24
    Spiritmom says:

Flippin’ hilarious. Best way to start my day is coffee and a little Big Mama.

  23. 25
    Anne C says:

Oh my goodness! My husband LOVES the song “Tik Tok.” Seriously. He goes around the house singing it.

My favorite workout music would be Aly & Aj’s “Into the Rush” album, and the songs “Everywhere” and “Goodby to You” by Michelle Branch on her “the Spirit Room” album. Those end up on every workout-mix I create. And maybe a little Miley Cyrus or JoJo, but I definitely wouldn’t admit to that publically.

  24. 26
    Lauren Kelly says:

That last paragraph made this whole thing worth ready. SO funny!!!!!! :)

  25. 27
    Wanda says:

    That song list is…. cla$$y! :)

    And a spider monkey? Whaaaa?

I don’t think so. One of us would have to die…and I’m not going down without a fight!

  26. 28
    Maggie says:

I second the Kanye West Stronger suggestion and also really like Britney Spear’s Toxic and Can’t Stop by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I’m on week 6 day 2. I keep hoping to turn into one of those people who LOVE running and don’t feel right if they don’t go…still waiting. Instead I spend my minutes praying it will be over soon and hoping that a neighbor wil take pity on me if I collapse in their yard.

  27. 29
    Amy says:

I don’t have a run/workout mix – I just let my iPod shuffle the tunes and listen to whatever comes up. But lately I’ve been running while listening to audiobooks. My husband thinks it’s really weird, but the books really take my mind off of the suffering.

  28. 30
    Lisa says:

It’s great to know there’s a spider monkey at large in San Antonio. I’m coming there next week. Perhaps I’ll run into him at the Riverwalk.

  29. 31

I love the fact that SEVERAL people e-mailed you to talk about the spider monkey. Just goes to prove that you are the Dooce of Texas. ;)

  30. 32
    Stacey says:

So funny! We live in Helotes and have been watching the daily updates on the Monkey. I had to run out to the car late last night and my husband sent me outside toting our household weapon of choice…an aluminum softball bat. Take note, he didn’t offer to go for me, just to arm me. Thanks, honey.

I always stretch to Barry Manilow, I find him quite relaxing, he has such a soothing voice for a man. The new Enrique song “I Like It” works great to get you pumped and running…err, walking (I don’t run) with a kick in your step. And, I would never go anywhere without my beloved NSYNC. They will always be my go to group!

I just recently found your blog and have quickly become a regular reader. I love that you are local (for me, anyway) and I don’t mind that you are an Aggie (our family bleeds burnt orange). Ha! Thanks for making my mornings brighter!

  31. 33
    Nancy says:

I’m gonna get all old-school on you . . . my husband’s running mix includes Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” It even makes me want to run, and I am that voice you’ve been hearing in your head. :)

  32. 34
    Marie says:

Great post for a morning read!
One comment on the spelling of your name. It’s going to be pretty hard to work a $ in your name when there is no S in Melanie!! Just saying!
And I am old and I have heard of Ke$ha. Don’t like her but I’ve heard of her. I mostly listen to oldies. lol

    Hugs,
    Marie

  33. 35
    Vonda Krupa says:

I think you should add “Misery” by Maroon 5. It seems to sum up your total running experience and puts it to a good beat. :)

  34. 36
    Melissa says:

I think a good workout song is “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts. Keep up the good work!

  35. 37
    Monika says:

Copa Cabana gets me motivated! There. I said it. Laugh amongst yourselves.

  36. 38
    Abby says:

And heaven help that monkey if it shows up at our house. P would have that thing shot, stuffed and placed in our bathroom to hold rolls of toilet paper in its little taxidermied arms before it ever knew what hit it.

Its pure comedy gold….GOLD I tell you! You make me LOL entirely too much Melanie. You’re AWE$OME!

  37. 39
    jessica s says:

Your comments about Ke$ha’s $’s made me laugh!

I just added these 3 last night and they are fab.u.lous!

    Club Can’t Handle Me (FloRida)
    Dynamite (Taio Cruz)
    Magic (B.o.B)

And I LOVE DC and How He Loves!!! When I am running, I end with that one, too b/c it is soooo true!!

  38. 40
    Katie says:

I am going to also have to recommend Dynamite by Taos Cruz. Pumps me up every time!

  39. 41

    Dear Walking Like P. Diddy,
It takes guts to give a shout out to the shallow songs we all catch ourselves humming inspite of ourselves. Here we think we are such a deep and cultured people and then we sing Katy Perry in the shower… I’m worse, California Gurls was SO stuck in my head one day that I wrote a parody and posted it on Youtube {gasp} I know! At least I could relate a little more when the song in my head was called ‘Nebraska boyz’ and included Wrangler butts and farmer’s tans!

Thanks for the insight to your tunes and your workout… I really NEED to get OFF the couch!
    Love,
    $norting with Laughter in Nebra$ka

    April says:

I am a mother of 4 so most of what I listen to consists of whatever is playing on the DVD player in my minivan. Yes, minivan. Don’t judge me by my minivan. I’m way too cool for it, but it sure is convenient. When I do get to listen to “my” music, it’s rap and R&B all the way! As I’m typing this I’m looking at my dusty treadmill so obviously it’s been a while since it’s been put to use. I must say, though, hearing you talk about running is giving me a little twinge of motivation. Just a twinge. WHEN (I’m feeling optimistic today) I do start walking/running again, these 3 songs will surely make my playlist:

    “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz
    “Fire Burning” by Sean Kingston

And this one would probably be in my warmup because it’s not fast but the beat is FAB-U-LOUS and sure to get you moving:
“Teach me how to Dougie” by Cali Swag District

WARNING: The third song may hinder your training because you’re going to want to Dougie. And if you can, I am so jealous. I’ve danced my whole life but my body doesn’t move like THAT. It’s not for lack of trying, though. Oh the embarrassment for my children when I attempt it. Even my 3-year-old says, STOP MAMA. Go ahead, YouTube “teach me how to dougie.” You know you want to. :)

    Beth says:

Just thought you might want to know that I laughed till I cried about the statement you made about P and the spider monkey and the toilet paper (in fact I’m still laughing – please give me a minute so I can keep typing) – I’m not really sure why it got me so much this morning (lack of sleep, stress, etc.??) but THANK YOU (and P and the monkey, of course!!) for making me laugh out loud!

  43. 45
    ginny says:

Cla$$y, indeed! I love your music lists! I’m still working out to Miley’s Party in the USA…is that so yesterday?!

  44. 46

Thanks so much for posting your songs. Not only are you hilarious, but your readers are as well! Some of those comments cracked me up. Here are some of the songs that I like – I have a lot so I don’t get tired of them. But I’m always in the market for new ones; it’s fun to hear other people’s suggestions!

    All Star (Smash Mouth)
    American Girl (Tom Petty)
    Beautiful Day (U2)
Born With a Broken Heart (Kenny Wayne Shepherd)
    Breakdown (Tom Petty)
    Don’t Walk Away (Miley Cyrus)
    Jealous Again (The Black Crows)
    Lie to Me (Johnny Lang)
Only Happy When it Rains (Garbage)
    Peaceful World (John Mellencamp)
    Something You Got (BB King)
Son of a Preacher Man (Dusty Springfield)
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
This Is Who I Am (Third Day)
The Thrill is Gone (BB King and Tracy Chapman)
When Love Comes to Town (U2/BB King)
    7 Things by Miley Cyrus

Nothing like a good songs to make it through a run. Thanks again!

  45. 47

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the laugh this morning. I’ve had a very discouraging morning, and this is just what I needed to hear. :)

I think T would HOPE for that monkey to come by so that he could have some target practice. My girls would want to keep it for a pet. :)

  46. 48
    Cindi In Boston says:

“And heaven help that monkey if it shows up at our house. P would have that thing shot, stuffed and placed in our bathroom to hold rolls of toilet paper in its little taxidermied arms before it ever knew what hit it.”

I just seriously laughed out loud at this! My toddler is demanding, “what is funny, mommy?!”…

  47. 49
    Lindsee says:

You NEVER cease to make me laugh. A spider monkey? I guess I really need to click on the news link. HA! Also, thank you for adding “Mine” to your list. Love it.

Oh, and sweet Ke$ha is really giving us youth worker a run for our money after she sang “Take it off” on the Today Show. Thank you, Ke$ha. Thank you very much. Definitely what I want every girl to hear.

  48. 50

I have thought it before, but now the deal is sealed: We could totally be friends.

  50. 52
    Kim says:

Also, is it wrong that Ke$ha’s new song, “Take it off”, totally gets me going in the mornings?

    It feels wrong. Yet good.

Generally the ‘good’ part shuts the ‘wrong’ part up.

all i do is win – dj khaled
    teenage dream – katy perry
    baby – bieber fever
evacuate the dance floor – cascada

i too have very sophisticated and cla$$y taste in music. hope you like those!

  52. 54
    Kirsten says:

I can’t have a workout mix with out Pink’s “Get the Party Started,” because it’s a guilty pleasure song that gets me moving, or Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back,” because if anyone can bring back sexy, it’s JT.

I don’t think I’d fare well being cornered by a Spider Monkey, although I like the toilet paper holder idea. I was recently gifted a dead fish by a Secret Admirer, though.

  53. 55
    zoom says:

There are so many levels of funny with the spider monkeys, that I don’t know where to start. The fact that there is sort of an “old folks” home for spider monkeys.. and then one escaped… comedy gold.

And while I don’t advocate killing monkeys…ahem.. I really want P to hunt one down. And. I want it stuffed.

I will have to try a couple of your songs. I was doing C25k, but I fell off the wagon. I need to get it started again. I did however, make the smoothie you linked to a while back. It was delicious my husband and I loved it!

  57. 59

    I’m a C25K grad – you can do it!

Some of my favorites on my playlist include:

    Don’t cha – Pussycat Dolls
    Cowboy – Kid Rock
Round and Round – Selena Gomez
    LA Baby – Jonas
Me, Myself, and Time – Demi Lovato (I have a 6-year-old girl, can you tell?)
    So What – Pink

And your spider monkey comments are priceless!

  59. 61
    Mindy says:

Just laughed out loud, LOUD, about that monkey! The image of it holding toilet paper…just too much! Hilarious!

  60. 62
    Jennifer says:

That whole last part? Comedy gold. I can totally picture it to so I know it is for real.

  61. 63
    Rachel says:

Oh, how I love your song choices. It warms my soul to know that someone out there is doing a nice mash up of Katy Perry and David Crowder! I have to admit that when I listen to a Ke$ha song I look around, quite guiltily for the Christian Music police (aka my 10 year old who says “did she just say beer?” Why yes she did. Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, I am raising a good Southern Baptist) but it’s just so catchy! Can’t help myself. Have you checked out Superchic[k]? (not sure why they put the thingies around the k but I’ll go with it) Very girl power…makes me (almost) wanna go out and ride a skateboard or something. Try “One Girl Revolution-Battle Mix” and as a bonus they are a christian band so my 10 year old would approve!

  62. 64
    TracyS says:

I know none of the songs on your list, not even the Taylor Swift one…I’m so, so…un-hip. I need to pull up my Slacker and get busy. Is Ke$ha really spelled with a $? What is that all about?

  63. 65
    Cora says:

I love Madonna’s “Hung Up.” It’s over 5 minutes long and a great beat! And I totally have “Tik Tok” on my workout playlist too. It’s great to run to!

  64. 66
    Kelly hopson says:

I think you jacked my workout mix, haha!! I’m doing the C25K thing to or trying is more like it! This TX heat is insane!! Good luck!!

  65. 67
    Kari says:

My husband and I recently had a very in-depth conversation about taxidermy and all that it involves….thinking about the monkey made me laugh out loud!! Not that I work out very often, but tend to love 90′s rap, Baby Got Back being my fave.

  66. 68
    A Ro. says:

I also run to Justin Timberlake 4 minutes. But my reason is that…it is a 4 minute song, long in the “running music” genre so one very peppy song takes a good chunk out of my run. Silly reasoning I know, but hey it works. I also resorted to making my playlist SO long and playing it on shuffle so that I was always “surprised” at the next song. This takes some of the monotony out of it all. Such a head case, don’t I know it.

I also like “Magic” by B.O.B. and the guy from Weezer Rivers Cuomo, and anything by Will Smith gets my feet happy….well not happy…you know what I mean.

  67. 69
    nicole says:

I listen to How He Loves at the end of my runs too, at least some of the time. It helps me push through the end.

I really like Move by Mercy Me. And Shine by Mercy Me.

I want to add California Gurls to my playlist, just haven’t done it yet.

You ssooo make me laugh!! I can picture your bathroom with a stuffed Spider Monkey right now. Too funny!!!!! That would really make you dread cleaning that additional 2nd bathroom : ).

Reading the rest of your post made me want to get off the couch and workout! Maybe it will make it past just planning to start working out again, and make it to fruition. I’ll let you know!

I have never been more certain that we would be friends (if I wasn’t a blog stalker, and actually knew you) than I am after reading this list! You should add “We Are Golden” by Mika. And not because I have super interesting and unique taste in music. I just heard it last week on the premiere of Hellcats. I know, things I probably shouldn’t admit to, ever.

good thing Ed McMahon is not dead since you look like him when you’re done running. :)

and it’s bright green and can’t be missed. I did it to bug my husband since he thinks she is the biggest piece of white trash there is (and I partially agree). What I really don’t get is on Your Love is My Drug–why at the end does she stop singing and say I like your beard? It makes NO sense!

I saw lots of comments for Dynamite by Taio Cruz, but that I’m a fan of. Also here are a few others that get me going:
    Just Fine-Mary J. Blige
Strut-Cheetah Girls (sad to admit this)
    Bad Romance -Lady Gaga)
    Shake It-Metro Station
If I Never See Your Face Again-Rhianna & Maroon 5

Tim McGraw gets my heart pumping! I mean…helps me run good. Two of his songs that keep me going are, “How Bad Do You Want It?”…I mean, really, I have to keep asking myself that the whole time I’m running. And, “Real Good Man”. Good strong beat for running. Another on my iPod while running is “Unbelievable” by EMF. Am I showing my age yet? :) Sorry, I’ve no clue who Ke$ha even is. I might just have to youtube that one. Good luck on your couch to 5K adventure!

    Melanie says:

So funny, Melanie! I usually end up reading these to my husband and kids.

And I forgot to say “way to go!” on the running. I started back to running a few years ago, and am about to run my second “half.” ; )

I don’t think I could run in the heat, though! Since moving to New England I have become a weather wimp when it comes to running. It was about 45 degrees this morning when I went for a run!

I’m smack dab in the middle of Week 6 of C25K and these are some of the songs that get me moving when Ms iPhone-C25K-App says “run now” (don’t you wanna just slap her?):

Single Ladies – Beyonce; you’ll almost forget you’re running when this is on
Million Dollar Bill – Whitney Houston (just trust me on this one)
Cowboy Casanova – Carrie Underwood; so sassy!
Use Somebody – Kings of Leon; there is a reason it’s the most played song on the radio
I Gotta Feellin’ – Black Eyed Peas; good one for near the end of the playlist
Down – Jay Sean; it’s a great dance tune, ergo…great running tune
    and finally:
Blame It on the Alcohol – Jamie Foxx; makes you want to finish the run and then enjoy a glass of wine with dinner afterwards

I am so embarassed that I know each and every word to California Girls. And there is no way on the planet that I could work out with How He Loves as any part of the music set. I dissolve to tears pretty much the second the intro starts. I LOVE your blog…usually lurk, but found that a TON of my traffic to my blog is driven from yours? Unless I’m reading the stats wrong, which is completely possible and highly likely!

My playlist is very long. As somebody above does, I put it on shuffle so that each work out is at least full of surprises. These are some of my favorites though, but I took out the country to shorten the list:

    Pink, “Get the Party Started”
*LL Cool J, “Mama Said Knock You Out”
Jay-Z, “99 Problems” (explicit language alert!)
    Timbaland, “Give It to Me”
    Justin Timberlake, “Love Stoned”
    Rehanna, “SOS”
    Lou Bega, “Mambo No. 5″
Cyndi Laupper, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”
    Timbaland, “Release”
    *Modana/Justin, “Four Minutes”
    Timbalan/Timberlake, “Carry OUt”
    *Lindsay Ray, “Brand New Day”
The Black Eyed Peas, “Lets Get it Started”
    Nelly, “Ride Wit’ Me”
*Alicia Keys/Beonce, “Put it in a Love Song”
    Fifty Cent, “In Da Club”
    Gwen Stafani, “Hollaback Girl”
    *Fergie, “London Bridge”
    A lot of Beastie Boys

    *My current favorites

I love a good workout playlist and we share a couple of favorites- “Tik Tok” and “Circus”. I like to start my workout with C + C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” and I have a lot of Lady Gaga on my list. But my must have song is Rhiana’s “Don’t Stop the Music”. It never fails to keep me going when I really feel like quitting!

Your last paragraph made me laugh out loud in the middle of a really rough day, so thank you for that!

And good job with the running! I need to start training for a half this December. I can’t seem to make myself actually, you know, go outside and run. This Houston humidity is killing me!

That is one heckuva workout playlist! I must say that I agree – the DCB bookends are great; How He Loves is one of my absolute favorites for the last 4-5 months.

And I will second your statement about Justin Timberlake in 4 Minutes – he made that song, hands down!!
