This, that, and my hair

Earlier today I was trying to figure out what on earth I could write about because, while our weekend was lovely and peaceful and serene, it was also very uneventful. And then I realized I had a few things to share but lacked the energy or the inclination to put them into any sort of narrative format. Thus, the following list was born.

1. I tried the baking soda on my hair and it worked like a charm. A charm I tell you. My hair had tons of volume and curled the way I wanted it to and the whole thing. It was absolutely perfect until I walked outside in the 100% humidity and it ruined it all. But that’s not the baking soda’s fault.

2. After much deliberation, I ended up buying a bottle of Amplify shampoo. I nearly went with Pureology because of all the love in the comments from last week, but it seemed to be geared more towards women that color their hair and I don’t color my hair. Yet.

As of now, my method of removing gray hair is to pluck them out with my tweezers. However, I think my hairline is beginning to recede so it may be time to reconsider the whole hair color thing.

So I bought Amplify since it seems to offer what I’m looking for, maximum volume. I also bought some Moroccan Oil and loved the way it made my hair feel. I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts after I’ve had a chance to see how my hair does when humidity isn’t a factor. Rumor has it there’s a cold front coming through on Wednesday and temps will PLUMMET to the mid-70′s.

3. On Friday night, P and I ended up watching Pretty Woman because there was nothing else on. I mentioned several times how I just absolutely coveted Julia’s hair and wardrobe in that entire movie back in 1990. (The brown polka dot dress? The orange walking shorts ensemble when she and Kit are talking by the pool at the Reg Bev Wil? Oh did I long for those outfits.) And then I said, “I think there were times I succeeded in getting my hair that big.”

P responded, “I think there were times you exceeded getting your hair that big.”

Well played, P. Well played.

4. Caroline and P went fishing again on Saturday. Here’s a little video of her with her fish if you’re interested.

Catfish from Big Mama on Vimeo.

In case you were wondering, P left his big hat at home.

Also, a few of you asked about the ranch last time. It’s a piece of property that belongs to P’s godfather and he lets us go down there whenever we want. I just wanted to clarify in case you had visions of us being like the Ewings with crystal decanters full of whiskey and outwitting Cliff Barnes every time he tries to take over our oil company.

5. I bought a bunch of fruit at the store yesterday in the hopes that I’ll actually, you know, eat it instead of a Hostess Cupcake next time I want a snack. I’ll let you know how that goes. The problem with oranges is their lack of chocolate with creme filling.

Y’all have a great day.

Good Morning from Zurich. I am pleased to read about the baking soda cure. I must give that a whirl. Reading the tips for shampoos, etc. was a bit frustrating because many are not available here. But I intend to hunt down some baking soda today (it’s not easy to find either). Loved the Ewing reference. And touche to your husband – he is a quippy guy. Have a great week and thanks for blogging!

  2. 2

So trying baking soda even with our Alabama humidity. I have never heard of that one.
Love your old picture. I promise that we must have gone to school together. You definitely had “the look” we all were trying to achieve.

  3. 3

I remember my hair being of similar size and style. And “shaker” sweaters. I had Forenza or OutBack Red or something like that.

Smoothies-make a smoothie and you’ll get your fruit in for the day! We had pineapple/banana/coconut the other morning.

  4. 4

Love the video and the fact that Caroline isn’t afraid to touch the slimy catfish….and that proceeds to pet it on the head and stroke its back like a pet.

Also, did you not get cooler weather yesterday (Sunday)? I was in Austin in the morning, and it was 20 degrees cooler there than when I got back home (south of Houston).

There are a few things I love about this post:
    1. Reg Bev Wil
    2. P left his BIG hat at home
    3. P asking Caroline if she even managed to get the fish in her video
    4. A weather plummet for you is low 70′s, which just manages to rub in the fact that your weather and grocery stores (HEB) are better than those of us here in the freezing North. I don’t know why I dragged HEB back into it.
    5. Highschool Hair = Awesome!

I just look forward to your blog every single day for so many reasons… You make us all feel like friends (in a totally non-stalkerish way), you make us laugh out loud, you have SUCH a way with words, you aren’t afraid to make fun of yourself, sometimes the entry is touching and makes me cry .. I could go on and on. I just need you to know that I’m aware that you spend alot of time on this blog, and we (I speak for all of us!!) really appreciate it. I look forward to reading it first thing every morning.. thank you! And thank you for the laugh. I remember rocking the Farrah hair in high school, now I need to go find those pictures! Have a great day, you’ve started my birthday out on a very good note!!

  7. 7

    Patting the fish = hilarious!

  8. 8

LOVE that pic of you & your hair! I had some pics close to that but never achieved that much body & curl – is that natural or hot rollers or (do you remember?) the spiral curling iron? I used that wretched thing every Sunday and pulled out CHUNKS of my hair each time – OUCH! But I guessed I must have liked the results to keep doing it. Crazy! :)

  9. 9

That video! What a hoot! Thanks for the laugh – I’m off to enjoy all the silly things my kids will come up with today. And maybe I’ll get my hair trimmed. Not that it was ever THAT big. ;)

  10. 10

My hair is a lot like yours. It looks like supermodel awesome until I go outside. Humidity is not my friend.

Thank you for correcting our mistaken assumption of the ranch’s glamour factor. P’s hat reminds me of one my dad used to wear. I’m glad he corrected Caroline’s camera work b/c she got a little too close to that catfish for my sensibilities. I prefer to imagine that my fish just sort of appears on my plate from the oven. I like my delusions.

    Happy Monday!

  11. 11

Plummet to the ’70′s, love that, it’s a balmy 21 here this morning and it might snow, yeah, I am over winter and winter clothes.
Love how Caroline pets the fish, untiil it moves then she jumps.
Good luck with you hair. I am all about better living through chemical enhancement, I like a good highlight! and love the volume it gives my hair.
Have a great day. You make me laugh every day.

  12. 12

Oh Melanie, the hair. THE HAIR. It’s late 80s/early 90s perfection! I was never able to achieve your all-over volume so I tip my hat to you. I focused on the bangage.

  13. 13

Crystal decanters full of whiskey! It is the little things you do that make my day!

  14. 14

I stopped and watched a few minutes of Pretty Woman the other night and sighed at all the pretty clothes. And big hair.
Seems I miss shoulder pads and perms . ..

  15. 15

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who found that Caroline’s petting the fish was funny! Now if only the fish would have truly appreciated it and not tried to turn on her…

  16. 16

Increased hair volume. My goal for today.
Oh, and lose 15 pounds by this evening.

    I have a plan.

  17. 17
    Holli T. says:

Well, I don’t know if I can get over the thought you aren’t there in TX with big hair and shoulder pads. If you don’t stop Cliff, who will?

  18. 18

Aw, come on…It’s okay if everybody knows that all us Texans have ranches and ranch houses with mahogany staircases and crystal decanters full of whiskey. Oh – gotta run – the housekeeper just set out breakfast on the patio and I have a meeting with Cliff Barnes at 11:00…

    Check ya later.

  19. 19

Caroline petting that catfish was too cute.
Oh, how I miss perms, big hair & Aqua Net! Haha!

  20. 20

I love the way she petted the fish!
It is currently 18 degrees at my house. I am hoping the last 4 to 6 inches of snow melts before April. So tired of winter.

  21. 21

I heart Pretty Woman. The cocktail dress? And good gracious, how fabulous her red opera dress was with the red lipstick? I adored Julia Roberts and Richard Gere together. The only thing that throws me on that movie, is how I always end up wanting to be Vivian. And then I remember her vocation at the beginning. But still. I love that movie.

Did you see Valentine’s Day? At the very end, Julia Roberts is in a limo going past Rodeo Drive, and the driver asks if she has ever shopped there before. “I have. Big mistake. Huge.” Love when movies reference other movies. You know, if I’ve seen them.

  22. 22

Wait, what? You have an oil company?!

  23. 23

keep us posted on the morrocan oil. I keep hearing about it, but I want an unbiased opinion.

  24. 24

    big mama,

i especially love the part about the dallas reference. LOVE it.

    and the big hair? PRICELESS.

as is caroline petting her fish like a dog.

speaking of dogs, that one running around in the background is also a hoot.

oh! but my whole point in commenting – which i almost forGOT! – is that I PLUCK MY GREY HAIR TOO! with TWEEZERS!

seriously. if i could have ever known i was going to have as much grey hair at 33 as i have…well, i don’t know what. but i wish i had known because i might have actually thought about doing something all big and important with my life so i could afford a regular color.

you know, like, MARRYING AN OIL MAN.

    xo

Not sure what I love more.
P’s accent or Caroline petting her dead fish.

  26. 26

The Caroline videos are always so entertaining! Thanks for sharing!

  27. 27

Big hair rocks! Next time you do it all poufy, take a pic and let us see! And while you are answering questions, who is Gulley? Sorry, but I’m fairly new around here and haven’t quite figured that one out.

  28. 28

First, love the blog… love the fish video.

However, I have a question for the ladies who recommended the baking soda… I’m sooo intrigued.
Can you use the baking soda rememdy on color-treated hair OR will it mess up the color that I paid way to much for in hopes of hiding my gray (which my hubby so kindly pointed out this weekend that he could still see)?! Thanks!

    Brickhouse says:

So was Caroline sad when Curious George went back to live at the zoo? Or did P just BUY the hat from the guy that used to own Curious George.

I’m sorry, P. I couldn’t resist. Although I applaud your efforts to protect yourself from the sun (as I sit here with a sunburned neck), I had trouble focusing on the fish, since I was trying to look around for the monkey. Tee hee.

When I am complaining about the sarcasm of my teenagers and how they use it on me, and wondering where they get it, please feel free to remind me of that post!!!!!

  31. 31

I love Caroline patting and petting the fish. She is so cute. I agree with the Curious George comment and am still laughing! My mom just gave me a bunch of my senior pics and I never got my hair that big. So jealous. I will try baking soda and do color my hair so may try
the purology. I loved reading those comments! Great women out there. Also, I am with Lisa, 20′s and frosty this morning and am hoping for a 50 on the thermometer by Saturday.

  32. 32

    *love* the catfish patting!

Hope you don’t get into any catfights with other oil tycoon wives that end up in the pool — that could really wreak havoc with the hair.

  33. 33

I’ve got to search back through the comments and find out how to use the baking soda, although here in northwest Alabama The Humidity has already arrived, so I’ll probably look like I’ve got a big ol poultice on my head, like I’ve been stung by a wasp (pronounced “wawst” here).
And honey, you have got to stop by The Cracker Barrell at your first opportunity and buy yourself a Chocolate Orange. Mmm, Mmm!

  34. 34

You do come up with the best lines-”The problem with oranges is their lack of chocolate with creme filling.”

  35. 35
    80's Girl says:

I attended my future sister-in-laws wedding in 1992 wearing a hot pink walking shorts outfit, just like Julia’s. My hair really wasn’t ‘big’ anymore. It was a permed bob at the time, much more sophisticated.

Really, now, it scares me that my fashion references were from two not-really-for-young-girls movies – Pretty Woman & When Harry Met Sally.

    Thank God for His grace!!!

  36. 36

I had the exact same fascination with Julia Roberts clothing. I actually found a peachish short and jacket combo from Victoria’s Secret back in 94 that I actually bought in hopes of being just like her. (Well, minus the whole prostitute thing.)

Watch out for that gray hair plucking strategy. I implemented that for years and then had all sorts of pubic hair looking grays sprouting from various points around my head. Apparently my new gray hair has an undesirable texture when plucked. I guess I angered it when I ripped it out or something. Anyway, just warning you, it could get rough.

  37. 37

I feel the exact same way about oranges.

    -FringeGirl

  38. 38

yes…that’s the problem with oranges…and kiwi, and cherries, and carrots, and celery…pretty much anything healthy…although, I will delve into strawberries or bananas when chocolate and whipped cream can be added:) You always…ALWAYS make me smile!

  39. 39

Frankly I think I still covet Julia Roberts hair in that movie and now your hair from when you were in high school! (I have Straight Straight hair…no body no anything..on the upside it could care less what the humidity is…) You made me laugh today thank you!

  40. 40

I ate M&M’s all day…with a side of microwave popcorn. Good times.

  41. 41

Have you seen, or I didn’t know if anyone recommended the dry shampoo. I know you just bought all that other stuff and the baking soda is working, but I thought I’d mention it. I told my mom about it. John Freida makes a brand. I think the dry shampoo seems to be a big trend right now.

I’ve been buying grapes recently because they seem to be easy to grab and filling. I need fruit that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. Oranges are just too messy for me. You know, high maintenance fruit like that. LOL

And I have to add that I’m over the moon excited because my alma mater VCU is in the final four. I may actually have to go out and get myself a final four shirt. How about featuring that for Fashion Friday. LOL

  42. 42

too funny on the hair comment! Your picture so reminds me of middle school. I totally had the whole whiskey decanter picture going- so funny!

  43. 43

I have been wondering what the problem with fruit was – you nailed it – no cream filling. :) Loved the video – great catch!! We watched some of Pretty Woman Friday night too – LOVE her clothes!! :)

  44. 44

I would have been so jealous of that hair in high school!

  45. 45

So for those of us who want the opposite of volume what should we use instead of baking soda????! The 80s was the perfect time period for me because I had to put absolutely no effort into big poofy hair. :)

  46. 46

I love how Caroline started out catching the biggest fish in the lake all by herself, but then realized she was recording and changed it to P. :)

  47. 47

I’m not sure what your hair issue was, but I found a great product this weekend called Infusion. It’s a hair treatment that you do at home and is supposed to tame the frizzies. You put it in your hair a couple times a week, and over a few months it’s supposed to stay in your hair!

  48. 48

I asked my 13 year old son if he wanted to see Caroline’s catfish. Guess what? He and my husband came running…love it!!

  49. 49
    Tara in Houston says:

Thank you for admitting that you pluck your gray’s with tweezers, I thought I was the only crazy out there doing this in the privacy of my bathroom. A friend looked at like I was crazy when I told her this yesterday. Also, I too loved Julia’s wardrobe from Pretty Woman, especially considering I had the same hair color and it is so rare to find actresses wearing all the right colors in a movie. Ditto for Rene Russo’s wardrobe in The Thomas Crown Affair!

  50. 50

Could she be any cuter patting the fish, I love that she’s willing in touch it! :) So did they throw it back or eat it?!

  51. 51

I had the brown dress with white polka dots!! Oh, how I loved that dress! Sigh.
