So I had these grand ambitions to cover at least five of the trends for fall today. But then I remembered that I have to leave my house at 7:00 a.m. and I might want to pack a suitcase some time between now and then. It doesn’t help that it’s also just been one of those days.

However, I managed to muster the strength to talk about three of the fall trends. I’ll also tell you that Gulley and I went shopping yesterday and both agreed that we felt like we were looking into our closets circa 1991. We even saw a sales girl wearing a lace dress with a denim vest over it. I owned that outfit once upon a time.

I don’t tell you that with pride.

1. Boots

If you’re only going to buy one new thing this fall, I’m going to suggest that it be a pair of boots. And, let me tell you, there are boots galore to choose from.

And more lace-up boots

There is the lace-up bootie that makes me feel a little nostalgic for those Esprit boots I used to wear during my junior year of high school with the built-in wool sock things sticking out of the top.

There is ankle bootie. They frighten me a little because I’m not sure what to do with them.

(When I just proofread this I realized I should have written, “there is the ankle bootie”. But it made me laugh that I wrote there is ankle bootie, so I’m leaving it. Watch out for ankle bootie. You don’t want ankle bootie.)

(I’m sorry. I’m very tired and a little punchy.)

And there are boots with spats. I’m a little obsessed with these.

Lastly, there are riding boots. I am such a fan of the riding boot. It’s a classic that will withstand the test of time and fashion whims.

2. Lace

Gulley and I were in Nordstrom yesterday and I saw a lace bodysuit. It was very similar to this Back to Lace-ics Onesie except it had long sleeves. I pointed it out to Gulley and laughed and said, “Remember when you used to have one almost exactly like that in college?”

And she replied, “That wasn’t mine. It was yours.”

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Anyway, as it turns out I should have saved it. I could sell it on ebay or something for tens of dollars because the lace is everywhere right now.

My only advice is to remind you that nothing feels worse than cheap lace against your skin. Except for maybe freshly shaved legs at the beach. Or alcohol on a paper cut. Or biting into a water chestnut.

3. Military Influences

The military jackets are everywhere. There are dressy ones and utility ones. They even have them in camo.

Maybe I’ve been married to P for too long, but I actually really like that jacket. Of course I could probably find the same one for $30 at Cabelas. Along with a cheaper version of these Prada camo riding boots. Too bad they don’t have the leather snake detail like P’s.

But if the thought of camo frightens you, there are other ways to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

skinny cargo pants (I haven’t actually tried these. I’m not sure why any woman over the age of six would want to add bulk to her legs with pockets and have them taper to a skinny little point at the bottom. It seems like it might make your legs look like they defy the laws of physics. And taste.)

Which means I have plans to spend this weekend bathing in Oil of Olay, researching the cost of Botox and trying to contact Demi Moore to find out where the Fountain of Youth is located. Even though I’m pretty sure the answer involves several highly-skilled plastic surgeons.

I may also eat some chocolate cake.

And do a little shopping.

Here are a few things I’ve found online this week that might be worth spending some birthday money on. Oh, and I’m not uploading pictures of anything today. I’ll blame the heat. And the laziness.

1. Everyday Chocolate Chiffon Top

This top is the perfect top for a Texas fall. It has an autumn look to it and would look great paired with jeans, yet it’s short-sleeved and appears to be fairly lightweight.

2. Class Dismissed Jacket

I got all caught up on The Rachel Zoe Project this week and I noticed that she is often wearing jackets like this with a longer top underneath. It’s totally major.

I think you could wear this jacket in either color and shut it down.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on Taylor? How did that happen?

3. On The Go Grey Watch

So I never bought a white watch this summer. I don’t really know why, but I think it had something to do with being hot and not wanting to add one additional layer of anything on my person. Yet I still adore these watches.

I’d been debating what color might be good for the fall and considered orange for a brief moment before I realized that it’s sacrilege for me to wear orange during college football season. But this grey? IS PERFECT.

I’m totally getting one.

4. One Shoulder Jade Dress

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but I’m guessing this would be too short for me to actually wear as a dress. It may also be a little too much for a lifestyle that involves skipping PTO meetings and going to HEB to grocery shop.

However, I think it could be great over a pair of jeans or leggings. Very dramatic and I adore the green. Picture it with some great gold cuff bracelets and hoop earrings.

5. Splendid Lace Tank

I am on the hunt for a gorgeous lace top. I totally fell in love with this Beyond Vintage top in the spring and hoped and prayed that it would go on sale. Alas, it never did and my love for it is unrequited. It makes me so sad because ADORE.

However, this lace tank is the perfect piece to wear by itself or to layer under jackets when the weather cools off. It could be dressed up with a blazer (that word sounds so dated and makes me think of elbow patches and a pipe) or a great casual jacket.

6. Apple Orchard Sweatshirt

I love things that I can just throw on with a pair of jeans and walk out the door feeling semi-cute. This fits in that category.

7. Rocket Dog Rideon Boots

Last year I fell in love with a pair of lace-up boots from Anthropologie. They don’t have them anymore, but they kind of looked like these except much cuter.

And even thought the Rocket Dog boots are quite as cute and lack the ruffle detail, they are still pretty cool. Plus, they’re $200 less which makes them a winner.

8. Naughty Monkey Detective Boots

Speaking of great boots, I seriously love these. And it’s just a bonus that I could walk around the house asking, “Where are my naughty monkeys?”

9. Chambray Shirtdress

This is another dress I love because it is so versatile. You could wear it with leggings or with a great belt or just on its own. The beauty is in its simplicity.

10. Green beaded Hoop Earrings

These earrings would be perfect with so many outfits. I love the green paired with the gold. Think how cute they’d be with the one-shouldered jade dress.

I was all prepared to write a long impassioned post in defense of jeggings, but I made the mistake of watching Marley and Me for the second time and now I just want to curl up in the fetal position and cry for the next hour or so. You’d think I would know better considering the last time I watched it I had to sit in the living room trying to gain my composure so P wouldn’t mock me for being so invested in a movie. And then when I finally walked into the bedroom, he asked me how I liked the movie and I broke down in tears all over again.

Needless to say, the dogs are getting to sleep in the bed tonight and have ice cream for breakfast.

Anyway, about the jeggings.

I didn’t even realize what I’d done last week when I casually mentioned that a plaid tunic would look great with a pair of jean leggings and boots. It was just one of those things you say, like maybe I’ll cut my hair above my shoulders. It doesn’t mean it will ever actually happen, just that I like to think about it. Hypothetically.

And, yes, I realize that sometime last year I said ugly things about the jegging. They frightened me with all their sleekness and spandex. But then I bought a pair of tall brown boots that were just begging to have jeans tucked in. Which led me to my first purchase of a skinny jean since 1989 because you can’t tuck bootcut jeans into boots.

I ended up wearing the heck out of those skinny jeans all winter long for the love of the boots. It was all for the boots.

Thus, I can see the benefit of the jegging. It’s all the fashion of the jean but with the comfort of the legging. The trick is to get the proportions right. Unless you are in phenomenal shape, I don’t think they should be worn without some sort of long top or sweater over them. And don’t forget the importance of the right proportion of top and boot.

I also feel like I need to tell you that I would never wear the skinny jean or the jegging with a pair of flats. Mainly because I don’t really like flats, but also because I’m afraid it would make me look like an ice cream cone.

That’s my personal issue. I know several people who wear flats with skinny jeans and they look darling.

But enough about that. It’s the season of the summer sale and here’s some cute stuff I found.

I originally thought the model was wearing pink hot pants, but they appear to be slim-fitting cropped pants which is a relief.

Personally, I’d wear this top with jeans and my cowboy boots.

This is the perfect shirt to wear with everything from shorts to skirts to jeans. And I love that it would transition perfectly into fall.

5. Citizens of Humanity Denim Jacket

I don’t know what I’d do without my denim jacket. It completes me.

Or at least it completes several outfits in my closet.

6. Tie-Dye Maxi Dress

I’m tempted to buy this dress just so I could wear it all next summer or even use it as a coverup.

7. Plaid Long Sleeve Roll Tab Shirt

I have a thing for the plaid shirt.

8. Lantern Sleeve Tunic

This would look so pretty with a pair of white jeans.

9. Candy Sweet Dress

Gulley has a dress similar to this that she wears as a swimsuit coverup and it always looks so cute. I also think it would look great paired with leggings or even over a pair of jeans.

10. Candy Bowl Ring

I’m not sure why I picked three things this week with “candy” in the name. It was purely coincidental. But the matter at hand is that I love this ring. But I really need to get a manicure before I have any business calling attention to my fingers.

Before I get into the reason I’m writing about fall clothes today, I need to share something that happened at the pool yesterday. It has absolutely no relevance here. Thank you for understanding my need to tell you about it.

Caroline and I were pulling up in the pool parking lot when I glanced over and saw a couple walking into the pool carrying an ENORMOUS inflatable swan float. It was the most massive pool toy I have ever seen. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the whole thing was roughly half the size of our master bedroom, plus I never exaggerate. EVER.

It took both of them twisting and bending that swan’s neck to even get it through the doors of the pool and then the thing just burst out into the room like a car full of clowns at the circus. Caroline and I walked around it while she stared at it in complete awe and wonder. About that time, the pool manager walked in, looked at the float and said, “That isn’t going to work. It’s way too big for the pool.”

And perhaps the Atlantic Ocean.

I didn’t want to stand there and gawk so I grabbed Caroline’s hand and we walked on by. After we put our stuff down and started swimming, I spotted the swan hanging out by a group of lounge chairs on the other side of the pool. The swan owners were sitting next to it, drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette. And that’s when I realized they didn’t even have any children with them. They were just two adults who loaded up their gigantic swan and headed to the pool for a smoke and an adult beverage.

It might have been the highlight of my summer.

Anyway, I’ve reached the point in the summer where I’m just about over the heat. And I’m certainly over trying to look cute in the heat, as evidenced by the fact that my daily uniform has become a pair of Nike running shorts and whatever t-shirt happens to be clean. I’m not necessarily ready for school to start, but I am ready for some fall clothing. Even though I won’t be able to wear any of it for about four more months.

I’ll discuss fall trends at a later date, but here are a few things I’ve already seen that have made me swoon.

1. Ha’ Penny Cardigan

This is really everything I love in a fall sweater. I can just picture it with jeans and boots.

Speaking of boots, I adore these. And you know they’re comfortable because they’re made by Born.

Plus, they are on sale until August 4th.

This is the perfect jacket to throw on with a pair of jeans. It’s cute, but totally casual and comfortable.

4. PJ Salvage Pajamas

There are few things I love more than a good pair of pajamas when the weather gets cold.

So cute.

6. Red Plaid of Courage Coat

Love this. Just picture it with a pair of skinny jeans tucked into boots. It would be the perfect outfit for a college football game.

Except I cheer for the Aggies and these aren’t our colors.

Also, most of our games are played when it’s stil 120 degrees outside.

7. Gayle Jersey Dress

As per my usual lackluster social life, I don’t have any events on the horizon. But if you do, then I would like to live vicariously through you and ask that you consider this dress.

I wish I could get this picture to upload because I don’t just love this mini, but the way they styled the whole look. The gray tights and boots, the yellow scarf? Love it all.

Apparently I am continuing my love affair with plaid. I would love this with some jean leggings and cowboy boots.

Green is going to be one of the big trends for fall. While looking around on Etsy I came across this necklace and fell in love.

Mimi and Bops took Caroline to the Witte Museum yesterday to see the dinosaur exhibit. I decided it would be a perfect time to clean out the playroom because I could actually get rid of some things. The majority of the time she doesn’t notice if things just disappear from the playroom, except for that one time when I gave away her shopping cart and she asked about it and I told her I’d sent it off to be repaired.

Which is kind of true except for the part about it being repaired.

I managed to clear out about two bags of stuff, including a Mr. Potato Head even though I felt a few moments of Toy Story guilt. However, it was quickly squashed by the joy I felt at the totally organized toy bins.

When Caroline came back home she didn’t even notice anything was gone. In fact, she wanted to clean out more stuff so I recruited her to help me with the kitchen cabinets. I found a shocking amount of items that have long been expired and was also relieved to learn that I have eight half-full bottles of Karo Syrup on hand.

And then after the kitchen cabinets were in order, I played six rounds of Words With Friends, thought about how LeBron James sums up all the reasons I don’t like professional sports, and then looked for cute stuff on the internet.

Here’s what I found.

These kind of appeal to me in a 70′s kind of retro way. They look like they could be the cooler stepsister of the Yo-Yo.

I also learned a valuable piece of information about the jacket this week while playing Words With Friends with Sophie. “Jupe” is a word that refers to a short jacket. I learned this when she played the word “jupe” against me for 44 points and I looked it up because I yearn for knowledge.

9. Time Keeps On Ticking Watch

This is the watch I’ve been looking for because it’s white and it’s only $18.00. Perfection.

I realize that 9 is a random number to end on, but I have some very important things to do that may or may not include watching Bethenny’s Getting Married while playing Words With Friends and looking up recipes for things that involve Karo Syrup.

Caroline told me the other night that she needed to make a video. At the time, I had no idea that she was planning to do her own Fashion Friday. Clearly, she is trying to stage a coup.

2. The whole thing with the shoe and her friend happened at least two, maybe three, years ago. Bless her Sicilian heart, she loves nothing more than a vendetta.

3. I don’t necessarily advocate the mirrored platform shoe as a fashion choice.

4. Or the Southern Belle costume for that matter.

5. Or watching some type of flying dinosaur pick up a warthog in its talons and drop it on the ground.

And because I feel like I need to contribute something fashion-wise to keep up with my daughter, here are a few cute things I’ve seen.

The other day at the pool (Have I mentioned we’ve been spending some time at the pool?) there was a mom wearing the most adorable plaid straw hat. This one is a little different but it’ll do, pig. It’ll do.

I really feel like there should be a fifth item. However, I’m not one to give into numerical pressure and so I’m calling it a day.

On Saturday morning Caroline and I have an 8:30 a.m. flight to Alabama where we will be picked up by Sophie and Alex and we’ll all head to the beach. Needless to say, my last few hours have been spent in a fury of strategic packing because I am determined that we will make this trip with one carry-on bag and a backpack. It’s an ambitious goal, but so is drilling for oil in the Gulf and look how well that’s turned out for everyone.

And, seriously, if P asks me one more time if I’m packing HazMat suits for Caroline and me, it will cease to be mildly amusing.

The truth is that I grew up going to the beaches in Galveston in the 70′s and 80′s. I didn’t even know there were beaches without tar and oil until I was fifteen years old. I thought everyone picked out their oldest bathing suit to wear to the beach and had to wipe themselves down with gasoline at the end of the day. It was the price you paid for lounging in the sun eating Fritos and bean dip and then going out to ride the occasional wave.

Anyway, as I’ve packed I’ve thought about the essential beach items. And even the non-essential beach items. Basically, I’ve thought about things I think are great for the beach and thought I’d share them here.

1. Zebra beach towel

A good beach towel is a must and I’m a big fan of the chocolate brown zebra print.

Of course if you want something more understated, you might prefer the Regatta stripe towel. It would be perfect for attending a Regatta Gala.

I could write several paragraphs about how particular I am when it comes to sunscreen, but I will spare you all the details of my sensitive skin and the BURNING, my word THE BURNING, that happens when I use the wrong product on my face.

That’s why I have fallen in love with this Neutrogena sunblock. It’s gentle enough for my face, but strong enough to use everywhere.

I think I sound like a commercial.

4. Ruched guard

I have a regular rash guard that I wear sometimes, but I like this one so much better because the zipper keeps me from feeling like I might suffocate. And the ruched sides are just cute.

5. Strapless smocked dress

I love these smocked dresses from Victoria’s Secret. They’re the perfect thing to throw on over a bathing suit.

6. Reef sandy sandals

I’ll admit that I haven’t always been faithful to the Reef flip-flop. There have been others along the way. But I always come back because they are so comfortable.

This maxi dress is perfect because it provides a little more coverage than the normal maxi dress and it comes in this delightful hot pink and green combination.

This would look so great with a simple white shirt. Or with a maxi dress. Or really with anything.

Also, I’m probably going to take a summer hiatus from Fashion Friday. I reserve the right to change my mind on that, but there are only so many times you can show a pair of shorts or flip-flops or cotton dresses.

What I’m trying to say is it’s hot. And it’s summertime. And the living is easy.

About a week ago, someone named Melissa emailed me and asked for my thoughts on the romper. Specifically, how I felt about rompers being back in style.

My mind immediately went back to the times in my life that I’ve worn a romper. If memory serves (which is debatable) I have lived through three variations of the romper trend. The first was as an infant and toddler when I wore onesies and bubble suits. However, that doesn’t really count because the romper never really goes out of style for that age group.

The next memory I have of wearing a romper is sometime around second or third grade. It was terrycloth and I think I wore it with Yo-Yos. I don’t believe I need to say anymore about that.

And, lastly, there was a romper stage in my early college years. Although we didn’t call it a romper, but rather a one-piece shorts outfit. Frankly, I think that’s a better term from a marketing standpoint.

Adult in a romper? NO.

Adult in a one piece shorts outfit? Probably still no, but it sounds better.

The best part is I actually have photographic evidence of the one-piece shorts outfit that I wore in the summer of 1990 during a family vacation to Bermuda. I bought it at The Limited and I was certain I’d never looked more stylish.

Sweet helmets.

Sadly, there is no record of what I was wearing on my feet. But I’d be willing to bet cash money that there’s good chance it might have been some white Keds.

I can’t really think about it.

And I’m not sure why I was so dressed up in my one-piece shorts outfit when my sister appears to wearing only a t-shirt and my dad is sporting some seriously high-waisted white shorts. But, to be fair, he’s rockin’ those shades.

Would I repeat the romper trend? NO.

Would I repeat it if it was called a one-piece shorts outfit? Still a no.

However, the romper is apparently back and if you can pull it off and don’t mind having to completely undress to go to the bathroom, then I say more power to you, my friend. Rock on in your romper.

Here are just a few quick fashion notes today because I went out last night and am a little tired.

(I went to an art show because I am cultured and sophisticated.)

(I didn’t really understand any of the art and it’s probably a bad sign that the piece I loved the most was called “The McRancho” and featured the Ronald McDonald clown riding various bulls across a Texas landscape.)
