It’s Day Three of Typhoid Watch 2010 and I’m not really any better. There was one point yesterday afternoon that some sort of front blew through and I turned into a human barometer. The pressure in my head was unbelievable and had it not been for a Route 44 Diet Coke from Sonic and three Motrin, I’m not sure I would have lived to tell about it.

Yes, I should probably go to the doctor, but what if he gave me antibiotics to make me feel better? What would I complain about then? And how am I supposed to make a list for Fashion Friday if I’m busy getting medical attention?

It’s about priorities. I have them.

But this will still be the briefest post in Fashion Friday history. I just don’t have the strength to ramble.

1. Women’s slub knit tiered skirts

Old Navy has their skirts on sale for $15.00. A total bargain.

The weather here has been gorgeous all week and it’s reminded me how much I love to be able to just throw on a skirt and a t-shirt during the warm/boiling hot months. Especially a skirt that only costs $15.00.

2. Orange and grey flower pin

I am in love with the flower pin. I saw this one on Etsy the other day and thought it was the perfect thing to add a little zip to a plain t-shirt. And when it comes to plain t-shirts, my personal favorite is the Timeless crewneck tee because they don’t shrink or fade. I still wear one that I bought five years ago.

Oh, and if the flower pin isn’t your thing, then you might like this poppy necklace. How cute is that?

3. Bordeaux Katherine top

Remember last week when I mentioned that lace tops were in for Spring? I think this one would look so cute with jeans or dressed up with black pants or a skirt.

4. Textured circle necklace

Because accessories make everything better.

5. Crinkle flower t-strap sandal

I guess this year is the year of the flower. I love these sandals with the flower details.

And I also like these rhinestone thong sandals in silver.

6. Custom Chuck Taylors

Did you know you can design your own pair of Converse? How fun is that?

But if you don’t need the pressure of designing your own tennis shoes, then how about this Jack Purcell Gingham pair or this plaid pair?

7. Hand embroidered top

I am a big fan of Mexican embroidered tunics and tops for this time of year. So cute and fun.

8. Embellished scoopneck tank

I just think this is really pretty.

9. Rosette detail cardigan

While I love cardigans on other people, they just never seem to work for me. They make me feel like I’m playing dress up or something. I can’t explain it.

However, they are very in for Spring and I think this one is really pretty.

10. Beaded knit sheath dress

I love that this is a pretty dress, yet it’s still just a knit dress. I think it would look so pretty with the silver sandals that I mentioned earlier.

I also really like this applique jersey t-shirt dress. Pretty and comfortable. What a concept.

That’s it for today.

Y’all have a great Friday.

Since several of you asked yesterday about which self tanner I use, I guess I should start by talking about self tanners. Because, let’s be honest, no matter what your dermatologist tells you, everything looks better with a tan. Sadly, everything doesn’t look better with wrinkles and skin cancer, so that leaves the self tanner option.

I know there are some expensive products on the market and I’m sure they are lovely and smell like pina coladas being served poolside by a cabana boy named Pablo. However, most of those are more than I’m willing to pay for a tan in a bottle unless I start selling my plasma as a side business to earn extra cash.

My go to self tanner is Neutrogena Build-A-Tan. I like the option of the gradual tan instead of just waking up VERY TAN one morning It allows me to regulate my color. I apply it two days in a row and then usually skip a day or two to make sure I don’t end up looking like the love child of Diana Ross and George Hamilton.

This year I’ve also decided to shake it up a bit and have been using Jergens Natural Glow Firming lotion on my legs. If it actually works then there’s a good chance that I might just start bathing in it every day for the rest of my life. I’m not sure that any actual firming is going on because if it was that easy then Jillian Michaels would be living on the street looking for a job, but it’s a scientific fact that a tan can hide a multitude of sins and the claims of firming make me feel better even it’s just a placebo effect.

As a bonus, I’m going to give you some self tanner advice from someone who has made some critical errors. Exfoliation is key. You’ve got to use the loofah to get rid of dead skin if you want a smooth, even finish. Also, put a little Vaseline or regular lotion on your knees, elbows, and ankles to avoid the dreaded dirty knees syndrome caused by the tanner caking around the drier skin on your knees. And, finally, sometimes you have to kiss some self tanner frogs to find your golden prince. My skin tends to be a little more olive, so what works for me may not work for you.

I have never been more thankful for a bit of faux tan than I was yesterday when I put on my black sleeveless dress to wear to the fashion show. My arms really aren’t summer ready and I mentally prepared myself that no matter what the day might bring I needed to avoid placing my arms directly by my sides at all time. Always crook your elbow. Always. Because it makes your arms look skinnier and doesn’t look awkward or unnatural at all. It just looks like you’re doing the robot.

The good news from the fashion show was that all the trends I mentioned last week were featured. I’m relieved that I don’t have to issue any sort of fashion retraction. Now that I’m armed with a wealth of knowledge, I’ll share the other five trends for Spring and Summer.

1. White

This applies to everything from the white shirt to the white jean. I’m a huge fan of the white shirt in all forms. However, I don’t really understand why everyone insists on making their white shirts so thin that you’re forced to wear another layer under it. I live in South Texas. I cannot wear two shirts all summer long without becoming angry and irritable.

That being said, I would make an exception for this Nanette Lepore Javanese blouse.

In the words of Stevie Wonder, isn’t she lovely? Too bad she’s so dang expensive.

Fortunately, there are less expensive alternatives. This pintucked tunic top is really cute and so is this floral applique v-neck tee. I also love this Heritage silk tiered blouse and this square neck crochet cami.

As for white jeans, I realize they aren’t for everyone but I found a really great pair last summer. The key to white jeans is that you can’t really go cheap. If you’re going to wear white on your bottom half and are over the age of fifteen, then you need to pay a little extra for a great fit. I love these bootcut white jeans by Citizens of Humanity.

Keep in mind that you can wear them with a longer tunic style top to eliminate your entire rear view being an expanse of white.

Of course if you have young children or, like me, can’t get through a meal without spilling something on yourself, you may want to skip the white trend altogether.

2. Safari/Tribal influences

Remember back when Banana Republic stores used to be designed to resemble the set of Land of the Lost? This is kind of like that. But please stay away from the sleestaks.

You can do anything from a beaded v-neck dress to a simple linen shirtdress.

It can also take on a bohemian look like this tunic.

I also like this tunic from Boden.

I’m sure there’s a lot of other stuff out there but it seems like a lot of work to find it right now.

3. The dress

There are a million different dress options right now. And that’s only a slight exaggeration.

This little silk solid tie-neck dress looks just like Spring to me.

But there are casual dresses, shirt dresses, floral dresses, and June Cleaver dresses.

If elected, I promise that there will be a dress in every pot.

4. Big, bold jewelry

The beautiful thing about jewelry, I mean other than the jewelry itself, is that you can find trendy, stylish pieces at any price point. There is nothing that can add a little pop to something tired and old in your closet like some great new accessories.

This turquoise statement necklace + me = True love 4ever.

5. Delicate and lacy

There are so many gorgeous feminine things out there right now. I wish I could give them all a good home.

I’m especially in love with this lace dolman top.

But there’s only so much plasma one person can sell.

That’s it for Spring Trends. In fact, I’m so tired that I may be done with Fashion Fridays FOREVER.

Or at least until next week.

Y’all have a good Friday.

For a discussion about stripes for Spring, you can go visit Jo-Lynne at Musings of a Housewife.

P.S. I also wanted to make sure that y’all know there is a group of Compassion bloggers in Kenya this week. I particularly loved this post from day one of the trip written by Ryan.

I’m over at my sister’s house right now babysitting my sweet nephew, Luke, while she gets a few things done. Like taking a shower and brushing her hair. I brought my computer because I thought it would be a great opportunity to work on Fashion Friday and it totally would have been if we had any idea how to get me on her wireless network.

I also managed to break her T.V. which is something I manage to do every time I visit. It really is a shame because it’s a very nice flat screen television that makes watching Regis and Kelly a delightful experience, but I have no idea how to work it and I always push the wrong button on one of the six remote controls.

And, while I’m making confessions, I’d also like to say that I have no idea how to work her baby swing. It says it swings eight different ways on fifteen different speeds, but how that actually happens is a mystery to me.

Anyway, I’m glad I’m here because Luke and I have been discussing all the trends for spring. He’s a little unsure if the striped look with a dinosaur emblem is going to take off.

But he’s positive that the hottest look for spring will be a sweet, sweet mullet.

His Uncle P will be so happy to hear this news because he was all about sporting a sweet mullet back in the late 80’s.

Sadly, I’ve only known him since he got rid of the party in the back.

The mullet isn’t for everyone though. So with that being said, here are a few other trends for spring.

1. Denim

Denim is everywhere right now. If the trend continues, it may just be a matter of time before we’re all back to wearing denim shirts paired with Santa Fe inspired wrap skirts with loafers and socks. Man, that was a good look.

But I’ve always been a fan of denim. There were about eight consecutive years of my life (okay, ten) where I always purchased some sort of denim dress and/or shirt.

And this year there are a plethora of denim items to choose from. Old Navy has a great dress and/or tunic made of denim’s stepsister, also known as chambray.

Gap also has a cute chambray drop-waist dress but it has some questionable pocket placement that may not work for everyone.

But there is still plenty of good denim to be had. There are so many great denim shirts that it makes me wish I’d saved one of the eighteen I used to own.

You could always go with a denim jacket. Or a fun skirt. Or (Jillian Michaels help me) denim leggings.

I hear they even make something from denim called jeans.

2. Neutral colors

Think soft shades of sand and taupe because that sounds better than beige.

I think this top from Nordstrom is so soft and pretty. It would be great paired with jeans or with nice pants and a jacket for a dressier look.

I love this dress even though I’d have to wear something under it. Or over it. And I also like this silk shirt and this ruffled tunic.

This outfit from Banana Republic really shows off how you can incorporate neutral pieces into your wardrobe without looking too plain and washed out.

And I’ve always been a huge fan of neutral colored shoes like these or these. They really elongate your legs and look great paired with dresses or skirts. But you can totally wear them with jeans, too. I don’t discriminate.

You may also want to find yourself a great neutral handbag. It will go with everything and eliminate the need to constantly switch purses. Not that I ever take the time to do that because what if I forget to move my wallet? Or worse, my lipstick?

3. Embellished tees

It all seems a little vague after the cold, wet winter we’ve had (Did you not see the five flakes of snow??) but if memory serves, it gets really hot here in the summer. And when it gets really hot there’s nothing better than just a nice cotton t-shirt or tank. Bonus points if it’s actually cute like this one from Boden.

You can go with something like this or this ruffled scoopneck tee. This one is really cute and I love this one from J.Crew.

Or if you’re a tank top kind of girl, there’s this petal trim tank, or a rosette tank, or this gorgeous garland tank.

4. Wedge heels

I seriously can’t count the ways that I love wedge heels. Maybe it’s a residual effect from a childhood spent wearing Yo-Yos or maybe it’s just because they come in so many cute variations like these from Piperlime.

And how about these darling ones in hot pink? Hello summer.

Love these colourblock wedges from Boden and that they’re British and spell color with a u. Speaking of color or colour, how cute are these bright orange ones?

This is totally off the subject, but does anyone have any thoughts on these?

I’m seeing these everywhere and I’m conflicted. On one hand, kind of cute. On the other hand, “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

So I’m torn.

5. Printed skirts

I think it was last summer that I declared it to be my summer of the skirt. The only problem was that I didn’t really have enough skirts to make it through the summer.

Oh but this year it’s going to be different because the skirts? They are plentiful.

I love this printed whirly skirt from Old Navy.

There are polka dot skirts, scenic skirts, and floral skirts.

There also happen to be some really cute plain skirts too. Nothing wrong with a little less is more.

Which is advice that would have served me well many, many words ago.

We’ll save the next five trends for next Friday. A sequel!

Y’all have a great week.

I was totally prepared to discuss trends for Spring, but then I decided I don’t have the energy to get through it today. The new spring trends require a lot of thought and meditation. Frankly, I’m not up for the task right now.

But maybe next week.

Or maybe not.

I’m just a little out of the words today. A statement that will seem ironic when this post comes in at 1000 words plus.

(I was wrong. This is actually one of the shortest posts I’ve ever written. Maybe I really am out of the words. Or maybe it’s the Benadryl I took thirty minutes earlier.)

On the bright side, this week was apparently the week of the spring catalogs and so even though I haven’t stepped foot in any sort of retail establishment, I’ve seen some very cute things.

1. Emporia tunic

I don’t really know that my world was as happy as it’s been since I discovered the beauty of a tunic top.

2. Olivia blouse

I’m pretty much in love with the entire Sundance catalog. When I first sat down with it, I began to turn down the corners of pages with things I liked and ultimately realized it doesn’t help much when every page is turned down.

It’s not that I actually buy everything I like, but it gives me a place to go back and gaze fondly while I think about what could have been.

3. Southern Wind trench coat

Trench coat? Good. Ruffles? Good.

Trench coat and ruffles together? GOOD.

4. Ruffled tanks

I know I featured a ruffled tank last week, but this one is a different ruffled tank. The more the merrier I always say. Unless you hate ruffles and tank tops.

5. Big Buddha Hibiscus tote

This should have been the first thing on my list because I am so in love with it. If there is a cuter handbag for spring and summer, then I don’t know it.

I’m calling it a day. I need to rest up for the weekend because I have big plans to sleep and then watch some DVRed television. I have goals.

If you want to go visit someone who’s ready to discuss spring trends, go visit Jo-Lynne at Musings of a Housewife.

Today is the day that I am going to speak some truth in love.

Several people sent me a link this week to something called Pajama Jeans.

Their slogan is “Pajamas you live in, jeans you sleep in”.

I am all for some comfortable clothing, but that is just wrong. Pajamas are for sleeping and for wearing when you drive school carpool in the morning. That’s it.

I’m just concerned that we’ve reached a point in society where we feel like we need a casual alternative to jeans. Gulley reminded me this week that I called her several years ago to discuss my disbelief that grocery stores were actually selling frozen, pre-made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. At the time, I honestly believed that America had reached the pinnacle of laziness. After all, how hard is it to slap some peanut butter and jelly on a piece of bread and call it a day?

But now I’m wondering how hard is it to put on some pants that require a button and a zipper?

We’re better than this, America.

We’re better than this.

Although I have to admit that I saw several commercials for the Hoodie Footie yesterday while P was watching Nascar (we lead a rich life) and maybe it was just because it was freezing cold and rainy outside, but I found myself wishing for my very own Hoodie Footie.

Needless to say, I wouldn’t wear it in public.

Or try to pretend like it could take the place of an actual outfit, although that hood is kickin’.

I just think if you can’t muster the strength to put on a pair of real pants then maybe you should just stay in your pajamas, eat a block of cheese, and admit that you’ve given up on life.

It’s a harsh word, but I say it with love. LOVE.

1. V-neck sweater

Remember how I’ve repeatedly mentioned trying to replicate this look that looks like an outfit Sandra Bullock wore in The Proposal?

So I found the grey stripy scarf at Old Navy, but hadn’t really found the right sweater. But then Lindsee sent me the link to this coral sweater from Land’s End and it’s pretty darn close.

Now if I could just get my hair to look like Sandra Bullock’s hair. Too bad there isn’t a link for that.

2. Chambray Drop-Waist Shirt Dress

My friend Steph told me about this dress this week. I think it would be so cute with black leggings while the weather is still cooler or with some cute sandals and bare legs once the sun decides to show up again.

3. Ode to a Grecian Tunic

I have no idea where I’d wear this or how many pushups I’d need to do to get my arms in shape to wear it, but I think it is so cute.

4. Tiered Printed Skirts

I can’t remember if it was last summer or the summer before that I declared it to be the summer of the skirt, but I do know that these are the perfect skirts for Spring and Summer. They are great with a cute tank or a t-shirt.

5. Embellished Linen Blend Dress

I saw this dress in an email I got from Nordstrom this week and fell in love with it.

However, right now I’d need about eight coats of spray tan for that yellow color to not make me look like I have the jaundice.

6. Princess ring

This ring is so soft and pretty. Love it.

7. Pintucked tunic top

I linked to this on my Daily Links page earlier this week because it is the kind of top that I adore. I’d wear it all summer long with turquoise jewelry.

8. Embroidery Tunic

I think this would look great with jeans.

9. Studded Circles Cuff

My love for bracelets tends to run hot and cold. On the one hand (I’m so sorry) I love the way they look, but on the other hand (Could not be sorrier) they can drive me crazy with all the moving up and down on my arm.

But this one might be worth it.

10. Woven trim ruffle tank

This would look great with a cute skirt and a denim jacket over it. Or even just by itself.

Of course considering it was 34 degrees and rainy here yesterday, I probably won’t be wearing it anytime soon. Or I may be wearing it next week because it’s Texas and it might be 80.

I don’t know that I went into one single store this week unless you count the four trips I’ve made to HEB. It has rained and rained for days. And I have mentioned the rain?

I’ve spent most of my time trying to avoid leaving the house unless it’s absolutely necessary. Hence the trips to HEB because P and Caroline tend to be high-maintenance and want frivolous things like “lunch” and “dinner”.

The worst part is I’m pretty sure if I don’t see the sun in the next few days that I’m going to develop a raging case of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) if I’m not there already. And guess what the forecast calls for next week?

More rain.

And possibly some ice.

Which is why I’ve been searching the internet for raincoats for Caroline and me. P bought himself a new raincoat from Cabelas last fall because he believed the meteorologists when they said it was going to be a wet winter while I tended to fall into the I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it-because-weathermen-are-big-fat-liars category. Unfortunately this strategy backfired on me.

And I can’t really discuss the super cute raincoat that was way on sale at Boden last spring that I didn’t buy because it hadn’t rained in San Antonio in two years and why would I need a raincoat when I live in a desert?

I still haven’t ordered a raincoat for myself, but I found this darling one for Caroline along with some matching rainboots. Too bad it doesn’t come in my size.

Although I’d be perfectly happy with this darling hot pink one from Boden. Maybe it will go on sale so I can buy it thus ensuring that it will never rain in San Antonio again.

Anyway, I thought I’d answer some questions today since I really haven’t been out in the stores and all my online shopping has been dedicated to the pursuit of rainwear.

1. Commamama asked: “I was wondering if you could recommend a fashionable, small cross-body handbag (I spent a long time with my friend Google figuring out what to even call the object of my quest). Right now, I carry a glorified wallet on a string, and it isn’t pretty, though it does contain at least one dart from the recent Nerf toy Happy Meal series.”

You would be horrified if you saw the size of the purse I carry everyday. It really is just one step shy of a duffle bag. But it comes in handy on the days I decide to carry around my home phone. And someday there will be a lucky chiropractor who will profit from my need to carry around everything I own on my shoulder.

But if I decided to downsize and be sensible, then I would probably opt for something like this Betty Bag. It’s practical and cute all at the same time.

Or you could go with something like the No Mad or Saddle Satchel Kavu bag.

OH WAIT. I was just looking at Piperlime for something else and saw this ADORABLE Orla Kiely sling bag. I realize it’s probably bigger than what you are wanting but OH MY WORD at the cuteness.

2. Judith asked: “I’m going to the beach with my boyfriend’s family over spring break. Can you recommend any modest cover-ups or swim shorts to wear over my swimsuit? Any other spring fashion tips? What style flip-flops or sandals are in this year?”

Oh the beach. I would like to go to there.

Okay, a trip with the boyfriend’s family is kind of a big deal. Am I wrong? It seems like a big deal, but what do I know? The last time I had a boyfriend was thirteen years ago and I married him.

Victoria’s Secret is a great place to look for swimsuit coverups because they have a wide variety of styles and coverage. I love this ruffled kaftan, strapless smocked dress, and off-the-shoulder tee dress. They also have some cute cropped cotton cargo pants and smocked gauze shorts that you could throw on over your swimsuit with a tee or tank.

Athleta has the Surf Side Kurta that I have long adored and also this tunic-length rashguard that can be cinched up as much or as little as you want.

As for sandals, there are so many great options. You can never go wrong with your basic flip-flop, but you could also look for something with a little extra something like these with a little peony or with a fun print. You can’t go wrong with just a simple t-strap sandal
or maybe something with a wedge heel if you want a little height. I believe my love of the the wedge heel is well-documented.

Hope you have fun and, if you get a chance, mail me a picture of the sun. I can’t remember what it looks like.

3. Jayde asked: “I want to wear the tall boats but I need to know how and you can’t just tell me you have to show me. I work in a corporate setting and not sure what’s appropriate for work as far as boots go.”

The sad news is that I took to long to answer this question and I can’t find any pictures on the world wide web to show you some great looks with boots in a corporate setting, but I’ll do my best to help you out since you shouldn’t have to pay for my extreme procrastination.

Since you work in a corporate setting, I’d recommend investing in a good pair of black boots with or without a heel depending on our preference. Corporate America thrives on the color black so it’s a safe bet you’ll be able to find plenty of clothing options to pair with your boots.

You can wear them with tights and a shift dress or a skirt. They’d also look great with a classic wrap dress or worn under your favorite pair of dress pants as long as you choose a style that’s dressy enough.

And the best part is that a great pair of boots can easily transition into your casual outfits as well. They’re the fashion gift that keeps on giving.

That’s all for today. I’m off to see if I can find some sort of Vitamin D supplement or a tanning bed.

Y’all have a great Friday.

To be completely honest I feel like I’m a little bit out of the clothes shopping loop because most of my free time has been spent staring into space or looking for fabric and accessories for the living room. Obviously I’ve been very busy.

Earlier this week I had to venture into Target for something that seemed important at the time, but clearly wasn’t because I can’t even recall why I was there. It may have had something to do with getting a new coffee maker for P because the one he had was stainless steel and he hated it. I know he hated it because I had to listen to a lecture every morning on the ills of a stainless steel coffee pot and all the ways it was RUINING the taste of his delicious Ted Nugent coffee.

Needless to say, I can’t just run in Target without taking a spin around the entire store because what if they have a really cute linen lampshade? Or some type of topiary thing for my mantle? Or some stylish Mossimo goods in stock? Now that I am forced to shop at the overshopped Target located an additional three stoplights from my house, I have to jump on those items quick or they will be gone. Says the girl who is still bitter about the boots that might have been.

Target did have a few cute things but I feel I need to give the disclaimer that I didn’t try anything on so I can’t vouch for fit or quality. I also thought I’d share a few other things I’ve liked this week. Of course that doesn’t mean I’ll like them next week because I am a fickle creature prone to change my mind at a moment’s notice.

1. Merona pleated top

This top is a little pricey for Target, but they are trying to justify it by labeling it as part of the Merona COLLECTION. Which is clearly superior to the plain old Merona.

The sad thing is that price doesn’t include the hidden cost of all the mornings I’ll need to do the 30 Day Shred to get my arms back in the shape they need to be for me to wear a sleeveless top and not frighten small children.

2. Turquoise waikiki necklace

When I was in Houston last weekend, I met a girl named Heather and she was darling. In fact, I’m sad that I didn’t ask her about how she had her hair pulled back and this really cool lucite necklace she was wearing. But fashion hindsight is always 20/20 and often cruel.

Anyway, the point is that I really wanted to link to a necklace like the one she had on, but I couldn’t find anything similar. HOWEVER, I found this really great turquoise necklace which has nothing to do with anything I just discussed.

3. Tie front top

I enjoy a simple top paired with jeans and I’d love this in black. It would be perfect with the aforementioned lucite necklace that I can’t find.

4. Hailey twistneck dress

This was another Target find and it looks better in person. The yellow isn’t quite as blinding, but more of a festive, cheery yellow. A yellow that says hello spring and summer.

Of course it may look terrible on, but let’s pretend that it won’t.

5. Gold whipstitch sandals

Listen. I am about three pedicures away from being able to wear any sort of open toe shoe right now so I’m not even sure why I’m talking about sandals. I just thought these were fun.

Plus, now that I took the time to hem the pants of my seersucker suit, I could wear these sandals with it for a casual look. Even though I’m not sure that a summer consisting of going to the pool every day and complaining about the heat will require a seersucker suit.

6. Embroidered top

Love.

However, see #1 for disclaimer about arms.

7. Big Buddha Soho bag

I realize this is a fall/winter bag due to the suede, but I stumbled across it and adore it for its bohemian chicness. (And, yes, I’d prefer that you pronounce that “chickness” as you read)

8. Striped scarf

Remember last week when I linked to that striped scarf and sweater combo at Boden? And I said that I needed to find the budget version?

Well, I still haven’t found the sweater but I was killing time in Old Navy last Friday and spied the gray striped scarf. I’m halfway there.

9. Breakfast pajamas

Pajamas with eggs, bacon and toast on them make me happy. I appreciate some whimsy in my sleepwear.

10. Distressed boyfriend jeans

I never pulled the trigger on these last fall because…oh I don’t know why. I wasn’t sure I was ready to embrace the boyfriend jean. I was conflicted about my feelings for it and confused by all the footwear options and didn’t understand if it meant I’d have to tuck my shirts in. It was a dark time.

But I’m ready. I’m ready to make the boyfriend jean part of my wardrobe and I think this darker wash is part of the reason why. Or maybe it’s because I really want to buy a pair of Converse tennis shoes to wear with them.

That’s all I’ve got for today because I need to pack and get ready to head to Austin for my dad’s retirement party. Of course, by the time you read this, the party will have already happened but as of this moment my hair still needs to be washed.

Y’all have a great Friday.

When I got in my car to pick Caroline up from school yesterday the thermometer in my car said 80 degrees. EIGHTY DEGREES.

Welcome to South Texas, where one week it’s fourteen degrees and the next it’s eighty. It’s no wonder I can’t sleep at night.

To make matters worse, I made a trip to the mall and stopped in Forever 21 because it’s usually good for some cheap, trendy jewelry or some sort of little top, but you know what I saw instead?

Acid-washed skinny jeans.

Dear Forever 21, you ain’t right.

(I just tried to go to their website to pull a picture of the acid-washed jeans and their site is down. Honestly, it’s just as well because if you lived through the 80’s there is a strong chance that the sight of acid-wash might fry your retinas.)

Anyway, all the stores are filled with spring clothes and between that and the eighty degree temps, my fancy has turned to spring.

Here are a few cute things I’ve seen:

1. Coral v-neck and stripy scarf

At some point during Christmas vacation, Sophie and I were talking about movies. She’d watched The Proposal the night before and said I had to watch it and to make sure that I made note of Sandra Bullock’s outfit when she has on some navy cropped pants with an orange-ish sweater with a gray striped scarf. I believe her exact words were “IT WAS A REVELATION!”

And it was.

The orange-ish color was beautiful and the gray striped scarf was so unexpected, yet pulled it all together. It was, indeed, a revelation. Which is why I was so excited when I saw a very similar look in Boden’s spring catalog.

By the way, Sandra Bullock’s hair in the movie has also inspired me to let my bangs grow out. AGAIN. You know that means it’s only a matter of time before I fret endlessly about whether or not to cut my bangs or let them continue to grow. But for now, I’m over them. OVER.

2. Plaid a plenty blouse

I love this because it’s the perfect piece for spring, but would easily transition into summer with some white jeans.

3. Lush rosette top

I’m a fan of anything that is basically a soft t-shirt but takes it up just a notch. It’s the perfect thing to throw on with jeans and flip-flops.

4. Belted trench coat

If there is one thing I really don’t need it’s another trench-style coat. Yet I am powerless to resist their appeal.

The sad thing is it’s only January and already too hot for me to wear this. But, STILL, look at all the cute.

5. Printed jessica top

I like the whole bohemian thing this top has going on.

6. Balletomane tank

I have no idea what “balletomane” means. My theory is it’s Anthropologie speak for overpriced top with some tulle on it.

But, once again, they reeled me in.

7. Strapless smocked dress

I’m at the point where I’ve reached my personal expiration date for actually wearing this as a dress. It’s okay. I’ve accepted it.

But I’m thinking it would be a darling swimsuit coverup.

8. Starburst statement necklace

I’m in love. I’m in love with the floral statement necklace and I don’t care who knows it. And Deloris Petunia has some of the best ones I’ve seen.

I mean, how cute is this one made out of felt? I’m happy just knowing this kind of bright and happy exists.

I realize I’ve only listed eight items, but it’s all due to my GO TO BED AT A REASONABLE HOUR initiative.

Several of you have emailed me to ask if I know about Polyvore. The answer is yes I do and I plan to start using it some for Fashion Friday.

However, it takes a while for an old dog to learn a new trick. Wait. Am I the dog in this scenario?

Don’t answer.

Oh,and for some more fashion you can head to Musings of Housewife and see what Jo-Lynne has today.

Y’all have a great Friday.

It is so cold here right now. And I say that with the full realization that many of you laugh in the face of a nine degree wind chill. A nine degree wind chill is a little thing you refer to as balmy picnic weather. For me it means that I want to spend the day in flannel pajama bottoms, an A&M sweatshirt circa 1993, and a Snuggie.

Except I don’t own a Snuggie.

And I certainly wouldn’t go buy a Snuggie. But I secretly hoped that someone might give me one as a gag gift for Christmas. Then I could have all the comfort a Snuggie offers without the shame of knowing I paid $14.99 for some type of gimmicky blanket when I could get the same results by wearing my robe backwards.

Anyway, I decided to share a couple of things (or thirteen) that I’ve seen on sale. You know, just in case you have any Christmas money burning a hole in your pocket.

1. Sea Cliff Cluster Ring

I love big rings. I’d love them even more if I had long, slender fingers and they actually looked good on my hand. But you can’t always get what you want.

Just ask Texas fans.

Oh I kid because I love.

And because I’m a little bitter that the Aggies haven’t been good since last century.

If you’re like me and are long, slender finger impaired, then you might want to opt for a new statement necklace like the Soho Sparkle Necklace.

2. Crinkle Cascade Dress

I have nowhere to wear this dress but I think it’s so cute.

3. Short-sleeve Cable Knit Pullover

I’ve had my eye on this for a while. It’s the perfect thing to wear with jeans and boots on normal Texas winter days when the temps plummet to the low 60’s.

Because this is the winter that is proving global warming to be a big fat lie, I’ve discovered that I really don’t have a good winter coat. I have several mid-weight jackets and trench coats because I can’t resist their appeal. But when it comes to any kind of coat that offers real warmth, I am out of luck.

Well, except for this white puffy down jacket that I bought from J. Crew about a million years ago. It kept me warm as I slid on my bottom down ski slopes during the early years of my marriage when P and I routinely chaperoned ski trips full of high school students. Now it just makes me look like the Michelin Man.

Yet I have been desperate enough to wear it on more than one occasion.

I don’t know what kind of cotton they are made from but I think they are what heaven will feel like. Assuming heaven is like a pair of super comfortable pajama pants that you would wear in public if you weren’t in your late thirties.

And yes it’s on sale.

However, I discovered the embroidered wrap and think it’s just beautiful.

Scarves are my new best friend. And this year I’ve discovered that they aren’t just for fashion, but for function. Who knew?

13. Velvet Eden Blazer

I believe a velvet blazer is a good staple item for any closet. It can be dressed up or down, but it’s hard to find a good one at a great price. Get ‘em while they’re hot.

(I don’t know why I just said that. It’s late. I’ve taken my prescription cough medicine. I apologize.)

There is no way to convey the sadness I feel over ending with the number thirteen, but I hate to delete anything and I don’t have the energy to look for anything else. So, thirteen it is!

Y’all have a great Friday.

On Tuesday morning I woke up with a raging sore throat and just knew I was coming down with a cold. I got Caroline off to school, popped some Tylenol and went back to bed.

And since I’ve been sick more in the last six years of being a mama than I have throughout the rest of my life, I just knew the sore throat was going to lead to heavy congestion and overall misery for me and everyone around me as I complained about how bad I felt. But then I woke up on Wednesday morning and the sore throat was pretty much gone and I felt fine. In fact, I even got out and accomplished a long list of errands that I’d been putting off for weeks.

(No, I didn’t buy deodorant. I have some sort of mental block at this point.)

So I complimented myself on my superior immune system and the power of my multi-vitamin, only to wake up yesterday morning with a head that felt like it might explode which would have been fine with me if it meant I’d feel better. I feel that I have come down with an exceptionally mean cold, especially because it toyed with my emotions and ultimately said, “SUCKER”.

And yet I still have to host a class party for first graders around noon today. May God have mercy on my soul.

Oh! On a completely different but equally pitiful note, I received a very nice email from a new reader named Amy yesterday. She just started reading the blog last week, saw my post about the denim puffy vest at Gap, and sent me this photo.

For those of you who may not share my addiction to reality television or People magazine, that is Tori Spelling wearing the denim puffy vest.

Is it the medication I’m taking or does it kind of look cute on her?

Amy, welcome to the blog. You made me so happy in the midst of my cough due to cold misery yesterday.

In spite of my ill health, I managed to find a couple of links I thought I’d share. This will be my last Fashion Friday post of 2009.

I know. SAD.

Also, please forgive the mediocrity of this post. In my defense, I’m high on Sudafed and self-pity.

1. Effortless Velvet Coat

I think I linked to this coat awhile back but at that time it was full price. It’s now almost 50% off and the sizes are going fast.

If you miss out on the coat, check out the rest of the Boden site. There are some great deals right now. I seriously cannot say enough about the quality of their kids’ clothing line.

2. Gathered Knit Scarf

Last summer when it was 106 every day, I couldn’t imagine that there would ever be a time when I would choose to wear accessories around my neck. But I have set a new personal record for consecutive days that I’ve worn a scarf.

It makes me so happy. I think it may be the best accessory ever invented.

3. Tulle Walking Coat

This coat is so cute and it comes in a rainbow of colors. It would look great paired with jeans or even with leggings and boots.

I’m a big fan of Tulle coats because they’re reasonably priced, but oh so cute.

4. Circle Knit Scarf

I am in love with this scarf.

5. Pink Flower Scarflette

See? I have a scarf addiction but I’m trying to act like it’s not really a problem. I could quit at anytime. I could downgrade to a scarflette.

Is that even a real thing?

I honestly don’t know the answer, but I do think this scarflette is adorable even if it has a made up name.

6. Turquoise and champagne necklace

There is really nothing that adds more to an outfit than a great necklace.

Unless you have a scarflette.

This one is really pretty and I love the neutral colors mixed with the turquoise. Of course I love anything mixed with turquoise. It’s who I am.

7. East Dillon T-shirt

For various reasons, Gulley and I got into a conversation the other day about things we feel strongly enough about that we’d wear a t-shirt proclaiming our love for it. I said I couldn’t think of anything other than maybe a Texas A&M shirt, but then Gulley threw down the “Riggins 33″ gauntlet and I had to agree with her.

If you don’t watch Friday Night Lights then this means NOTHING to you.

Also, if you don’t watch Friday Night Lights then I am sad for you.

Also, if you do watch it and have DirectTV and are currently watching the new season, PLEASE do not tell me what is going on because I will have to be all “LALALALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU” in the comments.

All I know is that based on the end of last season, my loyalties now lie with East Dillon as opposed to the Dillon Panthers. Go Coach Taylor.

Also, GO SUDAFED. How else can you explain that I just put a shirt about a T.V. show on Fashion Friday?

8. Hooded dress

I think this looks like a warm hug.

I’m always on the look out for clothing that would feel like pajamas yet be socially acceptable. I think this dress with some leggings would totally qualify.

9. Cardi Wrap

The Cardi Wrap is seriously the most versatile thing you can add to your wardrobe. If you don’t believe me then check out the BCBG site and all the different ways the models are wearing one.

See? I TOLD YOU.

10. Tassel Necklace

I’m not sure exactly why, but I have long been fascinated by this tassel necklace. It kind of reminds me of something my grandmother would have worn at some point in my childhood.

Granted, I’m not fascinated enough to pay full price, but I bet it will be on sale in about ten days.

That’s it for this week.

I’m off to take some more medication because breathing through my nose would be a real hoot right about now.

Y’all have a great Friday.
