Fashion Friday: Edition all I care about right now is the Cotton Bowl

January 7, 2011 ·

Those of you who are Aggies are probably well aware that there is a very big game tonight. And the rest of you may or may not care. But I can’t pretend that it’s not all that’s on my mind.

I’ve spent the better part of the afternoon piled up in some message boards as if they can predict the future and tell me if the Aggies will be able to beat LSU and Les Miles and his pure brand of crazy. No one seems to know that answer. Although I did find this video that I’ve watched 942 times.

But I don’t want to let down those of you who are here for the fashion and not for the football. So here are a few things I’ve found this week. And almost all of them are on sale.

1. the nouveau copenhagen cardigan

Okay. So this isn’t on sale. But something about it really appeals to me. The colors? The Fair Isle knit? The fact that I’m cold right now?

I don’t know. I just like it.

2. killington stevie bag

Yes. This is still a pricey purse. However, it is significantly less pricey than it was a week ago. And still just as cute.

There are some Les Miles crazy deals at Kate Spade right now if you have some Christmas money or a trust fund burning a hole in your pocket.

3. line of latitude cardigan

I really like this and can picture it just thrown on over a t-shirt with a pair of jeans.

4. tuxedo shirt dress

I featured this before but I like it even better now because it’s on sale.

5. precocious plaid scarf

Love this scarf in all the different color variations. I may need to get myself one before the alleged ARCTIC BLAST hits next week.

6. tulle ruffled coat

I’ve loved this coat all season and it’s on sale.

7. orla kiely classic shoulder tonal trim

Orla Kiely bags always get me. There is just something about them that I adore.

8. ruffle trim henleys

Saw these in Old Navy last week and thought it might be the kind of thing I’ll want in multiple colors. A great basic but with a little extra flair.

I don’t like to talk about my flair.

9. slim fit corduroy pants

These are a question mark. On one hand, love the idea of a skinny cord tucked into boots. On the other hand, need to know that they won’t give me a bad case of mom booty with their nondescript pockets.

Of course that could be alleviated by wearing a long sweater over them.

10. sperry rainboots

Do I even need to tell y’all that I still don’t own a pair of rainboots? And now we’re in the middle of a drought and I can’t bring myself to buy a pair. However, these may convince me to just go ahead and take the plunge already.

That’s it for today. Y’all have a great Friday.

And beat the hell outta LSU.

That Line of Latitude cardigan? Totally adorable. And the price? WOW! And then I looked at the available sizes….

    Oh well.

We’ll be rooting for the Aggies tonight. I don’t say that often. 🙂

TJ Maxx and Marshall’s carry Tulle! In fact I have a grey/charcaol coat almost exactly like the one you featured. It’s by Tulle, but I don’t think my buttons are exactly like that one. Tulle has some really cute coats, so check those two stores for great deals. I also love that cardigan from Sundance!

I totally ordered those rain boots today! So i have yellow sperrys coming to compare to a pair of yellow crocs I just bought. The crocs look like boats though but they are half the price of the yellow sperrys and are really really light. A win for rain boots. But the sperrys I think will look better. Decisions decisions…

The mom booty. I totally have one of those no matter how much I might want to deny it. I could kiss the designers of all those cute, long cardigans right on the lips.

Got both boys decked out in A&M gear for school this morning – I am so nervous you’d think I was actually playing in the game! Doesn’t help that we’ll be watching with some hard-core LSU fans who may or may not still be friends with us at the end of the evening…

Honestly didn’t even look at the fashion choices yet cause, well, they don’t have anything to do with football and I have quite the one track mind today. I’m sure they’re fabulous as always!

    Gig’em! BTHO LSU!!!!!

Good luck on the game. As an OSU fan I’m very familiar w/Les Miles’ particular brand of crazy. Did you know that every game he coaches he walks onto the field and eats a piece of grass… even if it’s astroturf?! He says that’s how he gets in tune w/the game… or something.

Anywho, I’m digging those Old Navy henleys… I’m kind of over plain tshirts as a base and those could step it up a notch

I’m right there with you! I have been nervous for our Aggies since I found out we were headed to a bowl game! Guess it’s good that Aggies can’t head in to ANY game with overconfidence??? Unfortunately, my faith may not be what it should because my hopes (okay, who am I kidding…my prayers) have been to just show up and play decent and not make it look like the whole thing was a fluke or mistake! Isn’t that pitiful?

    Gig ’em Aggies!

PS> And like a previous comment, we are watching the game with my stepdad who is LSU through and through. Doesn’t feel right!

I get ya with the skinny cords..actually tried those on in the store…yep, mom booty! they had the curvy boot cut style which were much nicer, but then ya have the whole, “can’t stick the legs into your boots”…oh well…sorry for the lame post comment on just cords…have a great day!

Good Luck with the game tonight! As a born and bred Gator fan, I am quite familiar with the trials of playing LSU, some good and some bad. The worst is always that fourth quarter. As a former Dallasite and friend of many Aggies I will be cheering for A&M. 🙂 Go Aggies! BTHO of LSU!

I bought that ruffle henly at Old Navy earlier this week! Would have been my biggest deal of the day except for the shirt that I got at Macy’s, which I knew was marked down but not exactly sure how much due to their crazy signage – made my day when the clerk said the final price was $4.20!! That’s cheaper than a Starbuck’s fun latte!!

The Old Navy henleys are super cute! And where are all my fellow SEC fans?? Even though Les Miles is crazy and the fact that I almost cried when the Vols win over LSU was overturned, I don’t hate LSU enought to root for a team outside the SEC. We can still be friends though? Right? LOL!

omigoodness. love the video! goosebumps, tears, adrenaline (i might be a little obsessed with our Ags)

i have a request for fashion friday one of these weeks: can you do an edition for the sports fanatic? i have a really hard time finding cute things to wear to Aggie football and basketball games. (and yes i’m a huge aggie basketball fan even though i never went to a game while attending A&M).

i know you have a lot of non Ag readers, so just general ideas would be awesome. at 27, i feel a bit past the age of wearing maroon hoodies and t-shirts to a game…

    Thanks….

When my husband coached college football, he always said A&M was one of the hardest place to play. You Aggies rock the stadium when cheering for your team. And you are well coached on when to be loud and when to be quiet! I think the Cotton Bowl is a home game. We, who are Sooner bred, will be cheering for those Aggies tonight!

So I briefly read some posts (conveniently ignoring some kitty cat fans) and noticed someone asked about Whoop! Here’s the Wikipedia definition:

An exclamation of approval and excitement, especially used at the end of a yell. Only juniors and seniors have the privilege to “Whoop”.

But it just doesn’t seem to describe the effect of the Whoop at Kyle Field.

They put the tuxedo dress on sale!!! I loved it when you featured it a few weeks ago but thought $108 was just too much. Actually $70 is also a bit much but I’m hoping they will put it on super clearance.

Sadly, the Sundance cardigan will probably sell out before it goes on sale. I waffled (because of the exorbitant price) over a blue Copenhagen cardigan just before Christmas and it sold out in my size. And I briefly grieved then realized it was just as well.

I love the tuxedo shirt but I am apprehensive that it might be a mite too short to safely wear over leggings. Does anyone else notice all of the Rampant Crimes Committed in the Name of Leggings? There was a lady in front of me at Whole Foods this week and she was in her 50’s and very cute and stylish with her chunky brown cable knit sweater and her brown leggings and her tall brown boots.
    BUT.
Butt. When she was getting her groceries out of the cart, the sweater wasn’t quite long enough to adequately cover her bottom. It was an instructive moment. Even thick, substantial leggings should always be treated as tights and not jeans, I said quietly to myself. Always assume you will have to lift your arms to get your groceries or help someone off the monkey bars. And realize that no matter how fabulously fit you might be, nobody needs to see those parts of you out in public. And yes, I also judge people who wear their tight workout clothes into the grocery store. AND male ballet dancers.

First, I get such a kick out of your blog every morning. It’s my one minute of peace before the madness of having 7 month old twins commences.

That being said, we are completely a house divided today — I was an LSU grad and my hubby was an Aggie, I mean “former student” (see, I’ve learned!). Anyway, thank GOD for twins because we get to dress one in Tiger gear and one in Aggie gear 🙂 Such fun! Really, really sorry about the loss. I was born and bred in ACC country and come from a long line of UNC alum so if my beloved Tarheels were ever in the Cotton Bowl (like that would ever happen) and suffered that kind of loss there would be no end to the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. The sack cloth and ashes would be upon me and the funk would last for days.

The best thing you can do at this point is suck it up and go order the Kate Spade purse and the Tuxedo dress. That way you’ll at least look good when you’re flipping the bird to all the LSU fans.

    Melanie,
I have been reading your blog now for about a year. Your daughter, Caroline, reminds me so much of my daughter who is 26 now. My husband and I get so much joy out of the pics of Caroline and her hunting “expeditions”. My daughter followed her Dad around our yard every step of the way. When she was just three, she helped him build a treehouse minus the tree:) She had pink rubber boots when she was just 2. She is married now and has a son who will be 2 in April. We have 4 1/2 acres and have a son who hated doing anything outside! He is a CPA today and is perfectly content to sit at his desk and move numbers around. When he was a teenager, he burned the riding lawn mower up once because he didn’t know the black smoke coming out meant there was a problem….we considered from then on paying him to NOT to mow the yard! He has four sons today, ages 10, 8, 6 and a surprise baby who is 8 months and his wife mows the yard!

Condolences on the game 🙁 I guess I should have told you up front I live in Baton Rouge! Enjoy each minute with that precious Caroline, she will be 26 before you blink. By the way, that treehouse survived all these years but didn’t make it through Hurricane Gustav. Broke my heart when it fell but was a reminder there comes a time to let go. Your heart for your family and God are such a blessing to me. Keep writing and I will keep reading.

Yesterday, when I was coming out of United way up here in Dalhart, this guy in his Tahoe had his windows rolled down and his car music turned up WAYYYYY LOUD…..and I thought, “Good grief man, you’ve already parked in the expectant mom parking”, and then I realized the tune was the Aggie fight song, and then it all made sense to me.
I chuckled and thought of you and your post of high hopes for the game. Sorry it didn’t go well.
    Hope your weekend recovers.

Who is Melanie?

Melanie ShankleMy name is Melanie and, in some strange twist of fate, I’m also known as Big Mama because I started this blog in July of 2006 when my daughter, Caroline, was not quite three years old and I was in the process of convincing her that BIG girls use the potty and BIG girls don’t have pacifiers, thus she thought BIG was the highest compliment in the land and began referring to me as BIG MAMA.Read More

Sometimes it takes a less than stellar season on the field to highlight the things I really love about football season are the people, being with old friends, making new friends, the memories and everything that Texas A&M embodies⁣. There’s a quote Aggies love that says, “From the outside looking in, you don’t understand it. From the inside looking out, you can’t explain it.” Texas A&M is a magical place.

Also, ending the season by beating the hell outta LSU didn’t hurt. Thanks and Gig’em.
