Ten things

April 21, 2011 ·

A list. That’s what I have today. A list.

1. A few days ago, my friend Holly Mathis wrote a post featuring houses with yellow front doors. And I’ve become a little obsessed with the colors used on this house.

I’m not saying I actually want a bright yellow front door, but I’m not saying I don’t.

It sure is cute.

2. Speaking of front doors, we’ve had to face the reality that we are dead to door guy. I have no doubt that both of our phone numbers are now on permanent DO NOT ANSWER status. And since I have no desire to forever live with a piece of plywood stapled to the hole in our front door, I called a glass company to come give us an estimate.

Lo and behold, it is no big deal to replace the glass, contrary to what we were told by door guy. It will be ready next week and the whole thing is costing a little over $100. Which makes it even more shocking that door guy didn’t just pony up a new piece of glass.

3. Gulley told me she saw the movie trailer for The Help the other night while watching a T.V. special about William and Kate. I tried to swallow my bitterness that at the same time Gulley was experiencing T.V. perfection, I was being subjected to some movie called Zombieland.

And then I found the trailer on Youtube so I could watch it for myself. LOVE.

If you need me in August, I’ll be at the theater.

4. Several of you asked about the Mama Tried t-shirt Caroline had on in the picture yesterday. It is one of my absolute favorites and was sent to her by the Junk Gypsies. If you’ve never visited their site and seen all their cool stuff, you’re missing out.

5. And, yes, she was wearing a Mexican dress in the picture with my sunglasses. We bought it at the Fiesta Store here in town, but you can find approximately one million of them at El Mercado in downtown San Antonio.

But if you don’t happen to have a mercado in your town, you can find them on Etsy.

And if you want to recreate my seventh grade year, you can wear it with jelly shoes.

6. The app I used for my phone pictures is Instagram. If you don’t have it, you need it. And it’s free.

7. I know I haven’t talked at all about Friday Night Lights season premiere. Mainly because I don’t even know where to begin. So let’s start where all good things begin, Tim Riggins. Hated to see him in jail, but I was glad to see him at all.

Julie Taylor leaving for college about did me in. I was seconds away from the ugly cry.

Coach Taylor was perfection as always.

And Landry visiting Grandma Saracen was one of my favorite scenes.

All in all, I can’t wait to see what happens. Based on the previews, it looks like it’s going to be quite the ride.

8. Boden is having a big 40% off sale right now on all kinds of cute stuff, including their raincoats. I’ve wanted one of their raincoats for a while now but I don’t dare order one at this point and I’ll tell you why. I finally bought a pair of rainboots back in January and I’ve worn them ONE time. WHEN IT SNOWED.

I feel like I might be singlehandedly responsible for the drought. Who knows what would happen if I bought a raincoat? I couldn’t live with the guilt.

9. What’s everybody doing for Easter? Any big plans? Do you eat Easter lunch or Easter dinner? What do you have? Or do you just eat a six-pack of Reeses’ Eggs and call it a day?

10. Don’t forget about the Tracy Porter giveaway. You can enter by visiting this page right here. I’ve also got a giveaway going for a $100 Visa gift card from Tropicana. You can enter by visiting here.

See y’all tomorrow.

i still have to watch Friday Night Lights!

so, for Easter, my mother in law is coming to visit. While my husband works all day. Just me, my kids, and my MIL on Easter. Boy…bet you’re jealous! Ha! 😉

I feel so not with it. I have not seen one episode of Friday Night Lights. I LOVE football and good TV…..I am so deprived! My husband and I need to get on hulu soon.

Thank you sooooo much for The Help trailer, it looks awesome and I can’t wait to see it. I love the casting, the accents and the general look of the movie. Like I said, I can’t wait!

LOVE The Help! I read it after you mentioned you were reading it (last Summer, I think?) and I COULD NOT put it down.

I’m so excited to see the movie!

Also- FNL… I still haven’t watched the Season 5 premiere, and I have NO EXCUSE because the DVD arrived almost two weeks ago! I just don’t want to start watching it because there’s only 3 discs, and that’s just not enough. Maybe if I watch 1 a week, like I would if I were watching it on normal tv? That would stretch it out for a while…

We washed BOTH cars this weekend thinking surely that would bring the rain. It usually works like a charm, but didn’t this time. Maybe you could try returning your rain boots. I’m getting desparate here and willing to go to extremes for some water. Just a suggestion… Btw, LOVE the yellow front door (makes me happy!)

    What a relief.
I was convinced that I was the cause of the drought. Just yesterday I hooked up all of my flowers by IV to the water hose. They are still not well.

Wait. I’m so confused. I thought the DVD I got from Netflix this week was the next to last season, but you just described what I just watched on my DVD. So, did the release the DVDs of the season currently airing?

    • Danielle

      April 21, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Yes, it played on Directv first, then released on DVD and now being played on nbc. Glad you are finding this out before you get to the end and think you still have another season left! That would be really disappointing.

Oh! Oh! Oh! I cannot wait to see that movie! That book was so good!

p.s. El Mercado was one of my favorite stops on our trip to San Antonio. That, and a gas station that sold the most amazing kolaches. You can’t get those in Kokomo, Indiana (Shocking, huh?!)

    April 21, 2011 at 7:04 am

Hate to be the first skeptic, but I’m just not sure The Help movie could beat the book. I did love the scene when Hilly recognizes herself in the book! I just hope the rest of the movie stands up to the book.

We’re going to Myrtle Beach for Easter to spend the weekend with my husband’s family. Will have a big crowd for an Easter picnic at their house after church. Will be a great time to catch up and visit with lots of friends and family that we don’t see often enough.

Happy Easter to you and yours!

Oh mercy- Tim Riggins hello! When my boys start playing football I am going to request #33.

We have a 4 day Easter weekend thanks to Catholic school so I am packing up my allbluezoo and heading south to ….. Indiana. Not an exotic southern location to most but when you are leaving NORTH Chicago it seems like the tropics 🙂 We’ll be up at sunrise to have breakfast with my dad and then head to my mom’s for lunch with 30 or so relatives. She called last night to tell me she filled 366 plastic eggs for “the hunt”. There will be 13 children in attendance who are physically able to “hunt”. Seems excessive, no? If ya don’t do it big – don’t do it at all!

We usually have Easter lunch at my parent’s house, but I haven’t heard anything about it this year. I have been trying to draw our house plan for years and the house you have pictured resembles the house we are going to remodel. I really like the yellow door… something I’ll be pondering now.

Please don’t hate me, but I actually thought Zombieland was pretty hilarious. I’m not sure how he did it, because I wanted to watch Bridget Jones’ Diary, but T convinced me to watch Zombieland. I loved Columbus and his list.

Thanks for the details on that adorable t-shirt!!

  13. Tina Lowry

    April 21, 2011 at 7:22 am

“Zombieland” was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The only thing that kept me watching was my 16-year-old son (who loved the movie). We were actually in the same room together for an hour and a half. That doesn’t happen very often any more. I try to savor every moment.

I know what you mean. I’ve sat through multiple viewings of Transformers just to be with the boy (who looks like a man). What we Mom’s won’t do for some “quality time”!

  14. abby

    April 21, 2011 at 7:25 am

That move? It looks so so good. I wanted to call my mom right now to tell her about it but then I realized that I might wake her up so I’ll hold off. But now I’m super excited to see it!

We have easter “dinner” but it is served at lunch time after church. (Any Sunday lunch is called “dinner” in our house.) Since we don’t have family in town and some of our friends don’t either, we’re getting together with two other families to celebrate Easter together!

OK.. just the trailer for The Help had me almost crying! Love it and can’t wait!

Easter…. We’ve given up on the traditional sit-down ham lunch. In Florida, the kids just want to play. We now do a cook-out/swim party. Works out great!

    Have a Super Day!

OH MY! what an awesome list- first of all the trailer- I. CANNOT. WAIT.

thanks for the t-shirt hook up and thanks for reminding me to watch FNL!
I have it DVR’s but have been toooo covered up to sit down and watch- must do before Friday!

  17. Anne N.

    April 21, 2011 at 7:51 am

I, too, wore jelly shoes with my Mexican dresses. Sometimes when we needed a little definition at the waist…ha ha…we would wear wide grosgrain ribbon belts with them. Anyway, I have already watched FNL on DirecTV, and while I won’t spoil it for you, I will say it was the BEST EVER! Clear Eyes…Full Hearts…well, you know the rest. 🙂

Okay, I usually don’t comment on blogs, but I had to today because I thought you might get a kick out of my Easter plans. But first, I loved “The Help” and that trailer just makes me even more excited for the movie! Thanks for posting it! As for Easter, we normally have the traditional ham, deviled eggs, etc dinner but this year it is just my husband and I and my grandparents and when I asked my grandma would she rather have the traditional Easter dinner or fried squirrel (her favorite) of course she said fried squirrel. So, we will be having fried squirrel, green beans and mashed potatoes for our Easter lunch! (I would choose the PB eggs, but I’ve already eaten 3 6-packs (that would be 18) of them in the past month so I should probably take a break!)

  19. Julie

    April 21, 2011 at 8:00 am

FNL-I’ve already watched the finale(Direct TV gets to show it before it’s shown anywhere else) and it is wonderful and sad!! How could they cancel the best show ever? As far as Easter, I’ll take a 6 pack of Reese eggs with a tall glass of milk. 😉
I hope you and your family have a very blessed Easter!!

    April 21, 2011 at 8:12 am

LOVED the book, The Help—am so, so excited for the movie–I didn’t even know they were making it into a movie (mothering sort of puts me in this hole where I don’t know what’s going on sometimes)—thanks for sharing! Just made my morning. 🙂

  21. Katie

    April 21, 2011 at 8:37 am

I was pee my pants excited about The Help trailer! If they mess up this movie, I am going to be so angry, because the book is amazing!

Meanwhile, I will do my best not spoil Friday Night Lights (because I bought it on DVD already), but I will say that this is probably my favorite season as a whole.

Have a great break! I plan to eat too much and then eat some more. (And I wonder why my diet isn’t working!)

Just so you know, you need to be watching “Pregnant in Heels” on Bravo. It’s about this darling British girl who is a “maternity concierge” to rich people in NYC. In one episode, she hired a focus group to help pick the name of the child. (Final decision was Boden) Seriously. It’s bananas.

Thanks for the heads-up on the “The Help” movie. When I got that book from the library I took it home and read for 5 straight hours until I was done and then my mom did the same thing. I’m definitely going to take my mom to see the movie!

Oh my, how I LOVE the character of Minny. You know, she’s the woman I want to be, but just don’t have the courage to be? I would love to look at my nemesis with that look of disgust with an “Umm-hmm.” Instead, I flash my “Bless Your Heart” smile. I don’t think there is much enamel left on my teeth from gritting them.

So is Fiesta over in San Antonio? Headed there tomorrow…

The Help looks great! Can’t wait to see it. My bday is in August so maybe I can get the hubby to take me to dinner and a movie!!!???
So glad to hear someone else refer to supper as dinner. My in-laws refer to lunch as dinner which yesterday made me think we were having our Easter meal with them at supper. Nope! I was wrong. They are having it at lunch, the same time my family is having ours!

We finished season 5 last week because we just couldn’t wait a whole week between episodes. It is definitely a wild ride and now there is a deep FNL void in my life. I honestly feel like some of my best friends just up and left me. So sad.

I did NOT know they were making a movie on The Help. I cannot wait to see it! Just watching the trailer brought the whole book back and tears to my eyes. Not sure if I can wait until August though!!!

To alleviate some of your guilt, I too bought rainboots last year and have only worn them once…and actually by the time I got where I was going the rain had cleared up and I was just left with sweaty feet and calves. Seriously, do NOT but that rain coat.

LOVE the colors on that house. I do want a yellow door.

I read the Help last summer while nursing my newborn baby girl and it is was such a fun read and even hearing a moment of the story takes me back to those sweet moments. Can’t wait for the movie.

My husband’s Greek family is ALL coming over for Easter lunch on Saturday and I’m making Greek food….which means I should be cooking now to get it done but instead I’m on the internet blogging and reading blogs. Oh well!

I love your list. I was glued to the TV when Friday Night Lights came on and just to make sure I didn’t miss anything I DVR’d it. Is DVR’d even a word? Junk Gypsies=love. I found them from you a long long time ago and their site is on my favorites. Easter is a big deal at our house. We always have a big BBQ on Good Friday and we have our friends over and we dye eggs and then have an egg hunt with about 500 eggs. I know totally over board. And yes they are plastic because what happened to Truvy in Steel Magnolias would totally happen to me if I used real eggs to hunt. Hope you and you family have a wonderful Easter.

Thank you for The Help trailer! It was the first book I downloaded on my Kindle.
We are headed to sister-in-law’s house for Easter lunch, they call it dinner. It is a big farm family so we will also celebrate the oldest sister’s 50th birthday. Our nieces and nephews range in age from 3-30. Always lots going on. It seems like it is always someone’s birthday. I say I was able to stop watching soap operas when I married into the clan as there is always lots of drama.

I’d send the old door guy the bill from the new door guy for as many months as he ignored y’all’s calls…just for fun. Loved the movie trailer, I’ll be going too. And CONGRATS on having 746 MORE (at 11:30ish) comments than the 400 you hoped to get when you began the giveaway…hope I win!!!

After your and Sophie’s posts, I finally broke down over the winter and got Netflix On Demand just so I could watch the back episodes. Let’s just say that in less than a month, the hubby and I went through all 4 seasons and have been anxiously waiting the new season.

PS—-Tim Riggins could be the only thing on this list and I’d be happy. YUMMO!

Oh my word, that trailer!! I didn’t even know it was going to be a movie! Of course it is!! I’d give my right arm to see it in the theater with you for the first time, but you’d have to come to Ohio. I don’t know that I’d survive a San Antonio August. Oh my word, I need to read the book again. I forgot how wonderful it is.

After about the millionth reference and recommendation, my husband and I finally started watching Friday Night Lights on Netflix. (Shameful, I know.) We’re only halfway through the first season, though. Jason is being stubborn about reconciling with Lyla after the whole Tim Riggins thing, and Julie just started dating Matt.

You’re going to have to give spoiler warnings for us late adopters! 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!

Happy Easter! 💕 Happy Easter! 💕
At our house if you want the Easter Bunny to bring At our house if you want the Easter Bunny to bring you a basket, you have to dye eggs. I don’t care how old you are and that you’re leaving for college in 5 months.
When Caroline was three, I enrolled her in dance c When Caroline was three, I enrolled her in dance class. She hated it. And after the recital she announced, “I beat all those other girls”. Which made us realize maybe she needed to try a sport. Preferably one that burned a lot of energy. Thus, we discovered soccer. ⁣
⁣
After twelve years of watching her play on fields all over the country, the ride ended last night. Her team fought so hard but came up short 1-0 in the last three minutes. ⁣
⁣
For twelve years we have cheered as she ran on the field. I’ve washed more soccer jerseys than I can count. I’ve pulled cleats that smell like the devil’s footwear out of backpacks, iced injuries, given pep talks and yelled at refs. ⁣
⁣
We’ve had the thrill of watching her score game-winning goals and the devastation of being in the orthopedic ER until midnight praying it’s not a serious injury. ⁣
⁣
Like life, soccer has been filled with highs and lows. Victory and defeat. ⁣
⁣
Caroline, soccer has developed your strong will, your character and your tenacity. It’s taught you to get back up when you’re knocked down. It’s taught you to be a leader on and off the field. It’s made you better, stronger, and more resilient than you’d have been without it. It’s given us car rides to games and practices that are some of my favorite memories. ⁣
⁣
Your senior season was the one I wasn’t sure would even happen. Between a pandemic and lingering injuries, I went into this year knowing each moment was a gift. ⁣
⁣
You’ve known for a while now that you were ready for a new season of life that doesn’t involve soccer. And the beauty of God bringing one season to an end is that He’s bringing a new one to life. I look at you and know the possibilities of what you’ll do next are endless because you listen for God’s voice and follow where He leads. Dad and I can’t wait to cheer you on in new fields and adventures. ⁣

In the words of Winnie the Pooh, “How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard?” 💙⚽️💛

Last night was Senior Night for soccer. Alamo Heig Last night was Senior Night for soccer. Alamo Heights won 5-1 but the real win was that I managed not to cry. Caroline asked me before it began if I was going to cry and I told her there was a 72% chance I could hold it together. ⁣💙
⁣
(In fairness I did get teary earlier that afternoon and about ten minutes before we walked on the field)⁣
⁣
Having a senior is a weird mix of emotions. I know I’m going to miss her like crazy, but there’s also a bigger part of me that sees how ready she is to go. She’s ready for new adventures and new beginnings and I want those things for her. ⁣💛
⁣
I know from our brief tenure of owning hermit crabs that they eventually outgrow their shell and go in search of a new, bigger shell. I’m not sure why my mind goes to hermit crabs for parenting analogies, but that’s what this is like. She’s outgrown her shell and is ready for a bigger space with more room to move and grow. ⁣💙
⁣
It’s this weird dichotomy of being sad to see the beginning of the end and being so excited for what she has ahead. As C.S. Lewis said “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind”. ⁣💛

I know I’ve over posted but two snow days in one I know I’ve over posted but two snow days in one week is truly a once in a lifetime event. ❄️
I have to say it’s been snow fun and a week off school and getting to share this with Caroline, knowing her time at home is coming to an end, feels like the most gracious of gifts. ❄️💙❄️

I promise I’ll stop with all the snow pictures ( I promise I’ll stop with all the snow pictures (maybe) but Caroline and I started off our day determined to build a snowman. We found out it’s harder than it seems, especially because our snow was so powdery. ❄️⁣
⁣
But we persisted. Or rather we waited until late this afternoon when the snow was a little easier to pack. ⁣
⁣
And we were more proud of this modest little Aggie snowman than I really should admit. What she lacks in structure, she makes up for it in heart and Aggie spirit.
👍🏻❄️💙
