  • Fashion Friday: Edition a whole lot of chambray

I am so glad it’s Friday because at some point this week I started to feel like I had a little bit of a cold that has manifested itself in a scratchy, sore throat and full on narcolepsy. I nearly fell asleep in my car last night during Caroline’s soccer practice.

Anyway, here are a few cute things I found this week:

    1. alma modern top

    a6b24e4bf3a6ee31766f332eac803fdc

I like this top because I love a black top, but this one has a little pastel touch that makes it more seasonal.

    2. barber agate drop necklace

    Screen_Shot_2015-02-01_at_1.46.36_PM_large

How pretty are these? There are so many different styles to choose from, but I think these are my favorite.

    3. audrina platform espadrille sandal

    _12322046

I love these because it’s all the height benefit of a heel but without the full heel commitment thanks to the platform.

    4. lush lace up tee

    _12421191

I feel like I’m seeing laces everywhere so I think they must be a thing. It does make a plain t-shirt have a little something extra.

    5. eyelet and mesh shift dress

    n10578247

This dress is at Gap and now I’m dying to go see it in person because it appears to have great potential. It comes in several color options, but I really like this coral.

    6. crochet front tank top

    F0356_WT0002

How pretty is this tank? It would look so great under a little jacket or sweater with jeans or shorts. It also comes in pink and celery.

    7. laser cut floral dress

    E9811_BL8133

This dress is really cute and a great price. It comes in cerulean, persimmon and sky.

    8. chambray henley shell

    imageService

Perfect sleeveless top to throw on with white jeans or a pair of shorts.

    9. chambray shirt dress

    cn10951574

Chambray shirt dresses are everywhere right now. I like that this one is a light wash and that it’s short sleeved.

    10. banana republic belted wide-leg pants

    n10838565

Banana Republic is winning the war on pants this spring. I don’t know what that means except that they have had the cutest pants in stock. These would totally make any outfit better.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • One and only rebel child

In honor of losing a country music legend yesterday, I felt like it was a good day to revisit this video of Caroline. I can’t even process that this was seven years ago.

A Sunday Drive from Big Mama on Vimeo.

Godspeed, Merle. And thanks for the music.

  • Fashion Wednesday for tweens and some other stuff

I have got to go to bed earlier tonight because I’ve woken up both mornings this week vowing that tonight is the night I’ll make myself go to bed at a decent hour. And so tonight is that night.

But I wanted to share a few things first that a lot of you asked about. And share some things that you didn’t ask about but you might be interested to know.

    1. A blueberry cart

Well, first let me say that I did not mean to throw so many of you off with the term “blueberry cart”. I had never heard that either but I swear that’s what the dealer told me it was. Although now that I’m home and in my right mind, it’s really more of a blueberry basket I think. Whatever the case, it was allegedly used to gather cartons of blueberries in the fields as they were picked. I was on the fence about it until Gulley pointed out that it had S 3 S on the end and then SOLD. Because get it? My last name starts with S and there are 3 people in our family. I’m such a sucker.

    IMG_4778

I’m still not entirely sure what I’m going to do with it, but I’m sure I’ll come up with something.

    2. My earrings

Several of you asked about my earrings. They are by Nickel and Suede and I wear them constantly because they are made of leather and are so light.

You can find them here. And there are tons of other colors and styles to choose from.

    3. My cross body bag

I have wanted a cross body bag forever but could never find one I loved or that felt comfortable until I discovered the Tirhas saddlebag from FashionABLE. It is the perfect size to fit everything I need but is the perfect thing to carry all day long when you want your hands to be free. You can find it here along with so many other gorgeous leather bags.

    4. Clothing options for tweens (Or teens)

I have to be honest here. I have no idea why I told you I would do an entire post about clothing options for tweens and teens because the truth is I am the blind leading the blind. Caroline wears almost nothing but running shorts and t-shirts every day and I never know when we might stumble across something in a store that she will actually wear.

The thing about Caroline is she is still on the small side. She is getting taller, but can still fit into a 10-12 in the girls’ section. However, she doesn’t want most of that stuff because a lot of it looks to little girlish and no way does she want to have on the same top as a six year old. I’ve learned that we can find a lot of stuff in the juniors’ department at various stores and just look for extra smalls. This works especially well for tops because they can always be a little oversized.

As for shorts and pants, I can usually find stuff at Nordstrom Rack or Nordstrom. I also have some luck – although hit or miss – at places like TJ Maxx. And dresses? Well, she doesn’t wear dresses. And the good news is we really don’t live a life that requires her to wear dresses right now. But I have had luck at Nordstrom when she’s needed a dress.

Here’s the bottom line. It’s hard to beat Nordstrom. They have a great selection plus free shipping and returns. Oh, and sometimes we can find stuff at Zara or local boutiques. But the bulk of her wardrobe really comes from Academy or Dick’s Sporting Goods because running shorts and t-shirts. And the tank tops at Target are perfect to wear under anything that needs a little more coverage.

Here are a few things that might work for your teen/tween/self:

I have two friends that have new books out this week that you might enjoy. They are both so good.

    6. Jen update

So many of you have emailed to ask about Jen and I wanted to let you know she was able to go home from the hospital late Tuesday afternoon. Please continue to pray that her pain stays under control and that she can get some rest as she goes back to a little bit of normalcy.

    Love you all so much.

    Have a great Wednesday.

  • Round Top and Junk Gypsies and pie

So I have now experienced Antique Week in Round Top, Texas.

I don’t know that I’ll ever be the same.

For years I’ve heard people talk about Round Top and tell me “YOU HAVE TO GO” and I’ve nodded my head and thought it might be fun and then it just never seemed to be a good time to make the trip. Which, by the way, is only a two hour drive from my house. What have I been doing with my life?

But several months ago, Jolie from the Junk Gypsies emailed me and asked if I wanted to come do a book signing at their store during Antique Week and I jumped at the chance because I knew it would be the thing to finally get me to commit to a Round Top trip.

So last Thursday, Gulley, Mimi and I hopped in the car and made the two hour trek to Round Top. I knew we were in for a good time when we found ourselves on a long, two lane stretch of Texas highway with nothing but fields of wildflowers and Longhorns for miles. And then all of a sudden we began to see tent after tent after tent along each side of the road, all of them filled with everything from cowhide rugs to architectural salvage pieces.

We window shopped from the car as we drove to the Junk Gypsy store and couldn’t wait to get out and shop. I’d had a lot of friends who are Round Top pros tell me where we needed to go and the best stops to make so we felt somewhat prepared to take it all on. But first we unloaded our bags at the Wander Inn, which is the Junk Gypsies bed and breakfast that isn’t open to the public yet but was maybe one of my favorite places I’ve ever stayed.

    IMG_4750

    IMG_4751

    IMG_4754

The whole thing was just so quirky and charming and welcoming, just like the girls themselves. There were rocking chairs on the front porch, pretty much zero cell phone reception, and pastures full of nothing but cattle all around. After I quit twitching from the part about no cell phone reception, I relaxed and realized it was just the like the olden days in the 1980’s when no one had a cell phone.

We headed out to Marburger Farm first and spent most of the afternoon there looking at everything, then went to Common Ground before racing to Royer’s Cafe to get there in time for our 6:30 dinner reservation. I have to admit here that I did not have the foresight to make a dinner reservation because it never even occurred to me, but a friend of mine had the heads up to make one for me and I am forever grateful because dinner at Royer’s during Antique Week is a highly coveted event. I have never seen a place so packed with so many people who were totally happy to wait as long as it took to eat there. And after I ate my shrimp stuffed quail and shared two pieces of pie with Mimi and Gulley, I totally get it. I’m a fan for life. It was seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I even got to take a picture with Tara and Jamie.

    IMG_4771

The next morning we did our best to load up the previous day’s purchases in Gulley’s car along with our suitcases before we went out to do a little more shopping before my book signing. It’s funny how our suitcases didn’t seem to fit as well as they did the day before. In fact, we even told each other that the criteria for how much you wanted to buy something else was if you wanted it bad enough to carry it home in your lap for two hours in the car.

We went to Excess 2 and managed to find a few more things. Gulley found a sign that she almost had shipped before the dealer figured out a way to fit it in our car. It was basically a trick that even Houdini himself couldn’t have accomplished, but we’re clearly dealing with pros. And I think it was time to head back to the Junk Gypsy store just in time because I was starting to get a little punch drunk and having visions of totally redecorating my entire house with gold nesting tables and green velvet chairs and “Hey! I’ve always wanted a table made out of an old filing cabinet and scrap wood!”. I knew maybe I’d crossed over to the other side of good sense when I impulsively bought something that was billed as a “blueberry cart” with a level of excitement that indicated I’d spent all my life looking for a blueberry cart even though the reality is I didn’t even know such a thing existed.

As soon as we got back to the Junk Gypsy store, Gulley and I took a quick minute to take a picture in front of the Gilley’s sign they had in the boot lounge.

    IMG_4774

We are two Texas girls that spent the formative years of our childhood watching Urban Cowboy and, while our dreams of riding the mechanical bull at Gilley’s were never realized, we will treasure this picture forever.

(Side note: There are rumors that Gilley’s is going to reopen. But I don’t know that riding a mechanical bull in your mid-forties seems like a good idea. I hear it can lead to living with an ex-con who wear shirts made out of net and lives in a trailer outside Gilley’s until your estranged husband shows up and rescues you and you ride off in his truck with his and her personalized license plates in the rear window.)

After that, I signed books and met so many nice people and saw some friends and managed to shop from where I was seated in the middle of the store by just watching what people were carrying around. I left with a necklace, several t-shirts and a couple of hats. It was the best.

And then Jolie and I took a quick picture before Gulley, Mimi and I began our drive back to San Antonio.

    FullSizeRender

We got in the car, turned onto the highway and that’s when we discovered the only downside of Round Top.

    IMG_4772

Traffic gets a little backed up on a Friday afternoon. It took us – and I am not even exaggerating – an hour and a half to drive one mile. ONE MILE. But here’s how much fun we’d had, I still thought it was all worth it.

Although next time I go, I’m not leaving on a Friday afternoon at four o’ clock.

But there will definitely be a next time because the whole thing was just more fun than I ever imagined. I give it two thumbs up and a blueberry cart.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition I’m in Round Top

This is actually Fashion Wednesday because I’m sitting on my couch writing it on a Wednesday night because I leave for Round Top in the morning and I don’t plan to bring my computer. Or I may bring my computer but don’t plan to have time to post an entire Fashion Friday. So, in a manner that doesn’t apply to anything else I do in my life, I have planned ahead and am writing it all early.

Also, I read the comments about doing a version for pre-teen/teen girls and I will totally do that next week. Although I’m not sure I have much to offer besides “Say a lot of prayers and then take them shopping”. I think the ages of 10 to 14 or so are the hardest because they don’t want to wear little girl stuff but don’t necessarily fit into junior sizes depending on whether or not they’ve hit puberty. (This is where Caroline would say, “MOOOM! Don’t say puberty!”)

Anyway, the first thing I want to show you this week is from The Ikat Elephant. It’s this tasseled mix print caftan coverup and I fell in love with it the minute I saw it.

    LS tasseled caftan coverup final

How cute is that? I already have mine and it will be my official coverup all summer long. It’s nice and long (mine hits right at my knee) lightweight and so colorful and fun. Best of all, The Ikat Elephant has so many cute things in right now and you can use the code Bigmama10 at checkout to get 10% off your entire purchase through April 5.

As for other things I found this week:

    1. AG Stevie ankle jeans

    4122011331028_014_b

When Gulley and I were shopping at Anthropologie with Jen last week (So many of you have asked about her and she is still in the hospital. I can’t think about it too much or I won’t be able to finish writing this.) she insisted we try on these AG Stevie jeans because she declared them her favorite ever. And she was so right. They are so soft and comfortable and fit so well.

They are on sale for $119.95 but additional 25% off with code XTRAXTRA at checkout and they come in several color options. I really like the light pink but they are sold out in almost every size. However, this neutral tan is a great second choice and I love the sapphire, too.

    2. cascading strands necklace

    37801891_070_b

This is just a great necklace that would go with anything. It’s on sale for $29.95 with extra 25% off with code XTRAXTRA at checkout.

    3. luca tie neck blouse

    4110580814033_006_b

I bought this top at Anthropologie last week and I can already tell it’s going to be one of my favorite summer pieces. It is the perfect length and I love the tie detail. (I leave mine untied because the bow is a little to Jane Fonda in Nine to Five for me.)

It comes in pink, yellow, navy and gray

    4. gisela dip dye woven dress

    _11559030

I’ve declared this to be the summer of the dress. And this one is perfect to throw on for dinner and just for running errands.

    5. birkenstock arizona slide sandal

    _11821972

Y’all. I had an actual moment when I saw these online yesterday. They are Birkenstocks made out of a rubber-like material and they come in fun summer colors. Perfect for the pool, lake and beach this summer. And they’re only $34.95.

    6. gap studio zip joggers

    n10787086

Yep. Straight up jogging pants. I really didn’t think I’d go here again, but I bought a pair of these and then ordered another pair. They are great for working out. Or not.

They are also great for sitting on the couch and running errands. Your call.

Between these and the Birkenstocks, it’s like I’ve traveled back to my 1988 self.

    7. hercules scrappy metallic sandals

    _12341483

I love a gold scrappy sandal for summer time and these are both of those things. And they’re only $35. They also come in tan here

    8. boho girl top

    IMG_9880_1024x1024

I can hardly resist a top called “boho girl”. This is so fun and summery.

    9. old navy wide-legged linen pants

    cn10866689

I just ordered myself a pair of these because they have rave reviews and I really want to be a linen pant kind of girl. I’m thinking the linen pants will offset the days I wear cropped jogging pants.

They come in white, light blue, black and something they’re calling “amalgam” that looks like a taupe/gray color.

    10. madewell du jour tunic dress

    E9191_BL7997

I saw this dress in Madewell the other day and didn’t try it on and I’ve wondered about it ever since. How is it going to be the summer of the dress if I don’t make more of an effort to find cute dresses? This is what I’ve been asking myself.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Late on a Tuesday night with no editing involved

Well it’s almost 11:00 p.m. here and I am a little wound up because we just got home about an hour ago from a soccer game. Caroline’s team had a makeup game from an earlier rain out and it ended up being scheduled for Tuesday night. This was a big one because the outcome had a direct effect on how her team would finish in the rankings. They were behind by one point with thirty seconds left when Caroline scored a goal to tie the game. I honestly think I blacked out for a minute.

I realize in some sports a tie isn’t necessarily a victory, but it was what we needed to keep our ranking and so it felt like a win. And my heart is still racing just a little bit from that moment.

In fact, when we came home I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for Caroline because she was starving and then she showered and got in bed. I decided a peanut butter and jelly sandwich actually sounded pretty good because I never really ate dinner. So I made myself one, sat down on the couch and started to text Gulley but instead Facetimed my friend Kelly. I hung up quickly because nobody really wants to be Facetimed at 10:30 at night or really ever, but Kelly Facetimed me back because I’ve been helping her pick out some outfits for a Bible study taping she’s doing and she figured I was calling about that.

Anyway, I started laughing so hard with Kelly about me Facetiming her that I walked off and left my peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the coffee table, only to walk back in the room a few minutes later to discover Piper licking her lips very suspiciously and my sandwich conspicuously missing.

The point is Piper and Caroline now both believe this was one of the best nights ever.

And I had to make myself another sandwich.

It had already been a pretty full day even before the soccer game. Caroline had the writing portion of the STAAR test at school so I had to get her up a little earlier than usual, plus pack a bag of snacks because apparently bags of snacks are crucial to the test-taking process and I don’t want to let my child and the state of Texas education down with a failure to provide enough Cheez-its for maximum performance.

After that I spent time editing some writing I’ve been working on for the new book before it was time to go get my hair cut and colored because PRIORITIES. Once my grays were freshly covered, I met P at Nordstrom to try and find him some new jeans.

I believe we all need a moment of silence to process this.

It’s like my personal version of The Hunger Games.

Jean shopping for P used to be so easy. I’d go in Gap, buy a couple of pairs of men’s jeans and he’d wear them. But at some point in the last ten years, men’s fashion designers decided men needed as many jean options as women. And now, as God is my witness, I had to search through stacks of jeans with names like “The Slimmy”, “Straight Luxe Performance” and “Federal-Transcend Cut” in shades of “Alpha blue”, “Deep Well”, and “Fade Out Dirty” to find a few measly options for P that were the closest thing I could find to “PLAIN AMERICAN BLUE JEANS FOR MEN IN THEIR FORTIES”. At one point I handed him a pair of True Religion jeans with super tricky pockets just to see what he would do and he dropped them like a hot potato.

And I forgot that P never goes shopping and therefore doesn’t know all the shopping rules. So when he went to carry the jeans I’d found for him to try into the dressing room, the salesgirl asked how many items he had and he responded with, “Do I not look honest?” Eventually, he found two pairs of jeans we both liked and a pair of gray chinos. It felt like such a victory that I immediately had him follow me to my alterations lady so he could get them hemmed before he knew what hit him.

After that we went our separate ways because he had to go check on some job sites and I had to go to HEB because we had somehow run out of food again. But after the jean shopping expedition, the aisles of HEB seemed pretty mild in comparison.

So that’s what’s going on around here. And now I really need to make myself head to bed although part of me is beyond tempted to watch the new OJ Simpson American Crime Story episode. My saving grace may be that I know how it ends. And it’s not good, Marcia.

Oh! One other quick note in case you missed it last week and have plans to go to Antique Week in Round Top over the next few days. I’ll be signing books at the Junk Gypsies store from 1-3 p.m. this Friday. And I’ll be doing a whole lot of shopping before that. Would so love to see you there if you’re around!
