Fashion Friday: Edition cute stuff I’ve seen

January 29, 2010

To be completely honest I feel like I’m a little bit out of the clothes shopping loop because most of my free time has been spent staring into space or looking for fabric and accessories for the living room. Obviously I’ve been very busy.

Earlier this week I had to venture into Target for something that seemed important at the time, but clearly wasn’t because I can’t even recall why I was there. It may have had something to do with getting a new coffee maker for P because the one he had was stainless steel and he hated it. I know he hated it because I had to listen to a lecture every morning on the ills of a stainless steel coffee pot and all the ways it was RUINING the taste of his delicious Ted Nugent coffee.

Needless to say, I can’t just run in Target without taking a spin around the entire store because what if they have a really cute linen lampshade? Or some type of topiary thing for my mantle? Or some stylish Mossimo goods in stock? Now that I am forced to shop at the overshopped Target located an additional three stoplights from my house, I have to jump on those items quick or they will be gone. Says the girl who is still bitter about the boots that might have been.

Target did have a few cute things but I feel I need to give the disclaimer that I didn’t try anything on so I can’t vouch for fit or quality. I also thought I’d share a few other things I’ve liked this week. Of course that doesn’t mean I’ll like them next week because I am a fickle creature prone to change my mind at a moment’s notice.

1. Merona pleated top

This top is a little pricey for Target, but they are trying to justify it by labeling it as part of the Merona COLLECTION. Which is clearly superior to the plain old Merona.

The sad thing is that price doesn’t include the hidden cost of all the mornings I’ll need to do the 30 Day Shred to get my arms back in the shape they need to be for me to wear a sleeveless top and not frighten small children.

2. Turquoise waikiki necklace

When I was in Houston last weekend, I met a girl named Heather and she was darling. In fact, I’m sad that I didn’t ask her about how she had her hair pulled back and this really cool lucite necklace she was wearing. But fashion hindsight is always 20/20 and often cruel.

Anyway, the point is that I really wanted to link to a necklace like the one she had on, but I couldn’t find anything similar. HOWEVER, I found this really great turquoise necklace which has nothing to do with anything I just discussed.

3. Tie front top

I enjoy a simple top paired with jeans and I’d love this in black. It would be perfect with the aforementioned lucite necklace that I can’t find.

4. Hailey twistneck dress

This was another Target find and it looks better in person. The yellow isn’t quite as blinding, but more of a festive, cheery yellow. A yellow that says hello spring and summer.

Of course it may look terrible on, but let’s pretend that it won’t.

5. Gold whipstitch sandals

Listen. I am about three pedicures away from being able to wear any sort of open toe shoe right now so I’m not even sure why I’m talking about sandals. I just thought these were fun.

Plus, now that I took the time to hem the pants of my seersucker suit, I could wear these sandals with it for a casual look. Even though I’m not sure that a summer consisting of going to the pool every day and complaining about the heat will require a seersucker suit.

6. Embroidered top

Love.

However, see #1 for disclaimer about arms.

7. Big Buddha Soho bag

I realize this is a fall/winter bag due to the suede, but I stumbled across it and adore it for its bohemian chicness. (And, yes, I’d prefer that you pronounce that “chickness” as you read)

8. Striped scarf

Remember last week when I linked to that striped scarf and sweater combo at Boden? And I said that I needed to find the budget version?

Well, I still haven’t found the sweater but I was killing time in Old Navy last Friday and spied the gray striped scarf. I’m halfway there.

9. Breakfast pajamas

Pajamas with eggs, bacon and toast on them make me happy. I appreciate some whimsy in my sleepwear.

10. Distressed boyfriend jeans

I never pulled the trigger on these last fall because…oh I don’t know why. I wasn’t sure I was ready to embrace the boyfriend jean. I was conflicted about my feelings for it and confused by all the footwear options and didn’t understand if it meant I’d have to tuck my shirts in. It was a dark time.

But I’m ready. I’m ready to make the boyfriend jean part of my wardrobe and I think this darker wash is part of the reason why. Or maybe it’s because I really want to buy a pair of Converse tennis shoes to wear with them.

That’s all I’ve got for today because I need to pack and get ready to head to Austin for my dad’s retirement party. Of course, by the time you read this, the party will have already happened but as of this moment my hair still needs to be washed.

Y’all have a great Friday.

I love Target and always get suckered into buying clothes while I’m there, but when I bring them home and try them on, i often realize they’re made for 14 year olds and not 29 year olds. ;-) (no, i’m not 29!) i do love their accessories, though. they always end up looking cuter and lasting longer than other places- and for much less $$$.

I need to make a big trip to Target. Holly is doing my family room and she has mentioned nice things at Ballards, that are way cheaper at Target, but darned if that is not an hour from here! Sounds worth it though.

It was great meeting you in Houston. I put your picture on my blog for fun :-) .

LOVE that grey stripey scarf from Old Navy. I might need to go there now…and Target, because who doesn’t need a good trip to Target (nevermind that I’ve been avoiding Tar-jay like the plague in an effort to save $$). Anyway. Three pedicures away from the sandal? You and me both, Big Mama.

You know it’s getting bad when you are coveting the sweater of a one year old(there were so many comments about it, Kelly had to add a note that it’s from Target). Do you think this pink sweater comes in a womens 1X? http://www.kellyskornerblog.com

5 Jo January 29, 2010 at 6:44 am

Sorry..hit submit too soon! It’s the sweater on Harper in the 1/28/10 blog(PINK sweater she’s wearing with the PINK headband in the PINK chair…did I mention it’s PINK ;0)?)

Be sure to try on the boyfriend jeans. I too was in love with the thought of them, ordered a pair and they didn’t fit right at all. I was very sad because I wanted to like them so much.

Ooooh, that tie front top. Loving that. That would look great on you, I wish I looked good in looser tops like that. And I think I need that gray striped scarf. Like today. I feel a trip to the mall in my future.

Love Target (my son works at the corporate headquarters in Minneapolis!)…especially their cheap Mossimo T-shirts for layering. Great colors, long enough to stay tucked in, lightweight for layering under shirts and sweaters, and (did I mention?) CHEAP!!!

Dude, did the model wearing the boyfriend jeans have her belly button surgically raised, or are those jeans crazy low slung? I’m concerned.

I bought some pink knock-off Converse tennis shoes from Payless (yes, I’ll admit it) in the Fall and I get compliments every time I wear them. They’re so fun!

The Merona pleated top and the embroidered top are my favorites. However, I would need Jillian Michaels to personally come to my home, live with us for 4 months, and beat me into fitness submission before I could even consider baring my huge pastey white arms. :s

I found a CUTE necklace and matches earrings at Old Navy last Sunday. I wrote about that and my Target find yesterday. :)

Have a great weekend!

Just know you are not the only one with a floppy arm debacle going on. I am shredding and working out at the gym to rid my arms of these FLOATIES before I wear a strapless dress in my best friend’s wedding this May. Sigh.

12 Heather in BasVegas (aka Bastrop) January 29, 2010 at 8:41 am

Love, love the whipstitch sandals. I have some in black that I found at Ross and have worn them to shreds. Now it looks like I’ve found a replacement pair! Happy Friday to everyone!!

PS…the boyfriend jeans model scared me too. A stomach like that is just scary!

13 Tammie January 29, 2010 at 8:44 am

No complaining girl…. my trip to Target takes 1 1/2 HOURS one way!!!Factor in that it is -20 degrees w/ windchill this morning, your 3 stop lights would be a tirp to the park. I could use those PJ’s this morning, some toasty socks, parka?

14 Marla Taviano January 29, 2010 at 8:50 am

I had 10 pairs of Converse tennis shoes in high school/college. Shooting myself for getting rid of them. Comforting myself with the fact that my feet have grown and they’d probably be too small anyway.

Before the day is over, I’m going to find out what in the heck “seersucker” means.

15 chesley January 29, 2010 at 9:33 am

Here’s the link to Heather’s blog. I saw the picture of you and her on there said necklacke – too cute!!http://therobertsonfamilytx.blogspot.com/

Seriously, every Friday you prove to me time and time again how much I desperately need to go shopping!!! Ha! And the name of those jeans is almost comical, too funny!! :)

17 melissa from girlymama January 29, 2010 at 10:27 am

Seersucker suit? I have some concerns…

20 Lindsee January 29, 2010 at 11:00 am

Sister friend. Please embrace the boyfriend jean with all that you have. I embraced 2 of them last summer and never once looked back. In fact, I’m sad that it’s now 40 degrees here in Houston because it may be a while before I get to where them. Quite unlike last weekend!

And while you’re at it, go for the plunge and do the converse. LOVE mine!

21 rrmama January 29, 2010 at 11:12 am

I love Chuck Taylor’s! I bought my son a pair and the store had buy one get one for a dollar so I bought me a pair. They are super cute with a t-shirt and jeans! Have a great weekend.

22 Kim January 29, 2010 at 11:32 am

I bought the pleated top from Target because I thought it was adorable. However, when I tried it on at home the collar was kind of funky. It made me feel all Victorian. Also, I bought it in yellow which was a huge mistake because then I looked like a big yellow Victorian sunflower.

23 Heather January 29, 2010 at 11:35 am

There are lots of Heathers out there and for me to think that it was me that you referred to as darling would almost be too good to be true. But just in case it was, the necklace is from Ann Taylor Loft. (It’s 50% off right now too) I know I already told ya on twitter, but it was so good to meet you, you are so sweet. I love me some Chuck’s, I think they are so cute on kids, and would love a pair myself.

24 meghan @ spicy magnolia January 29, 2010 at 11:44 am

I’ve got to pay more attention to your fashion friday posts, ’cause I need some help. I know I do. I’m not ashamed to admit it. You’ve got a great eye!

I meant to tell you: we gave my sister in law the black and white houndstooth coat from Francesca’s that you wrote about a couple of months ago as her Christmas present. She loved it and it looks sooo good on her tiny self. Thanks for the recommendation!

25 Robyn (3girlsmom) January 29, 2010 at 1:01 pm

You have the shirt in #6. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. And I love it, too.

I have embraced boyfriend jeans. It’s like Pajama Pants in denim.

I’m pretty sure angels are singing somewhere about that.

26 Kate January 29, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Seriously??? Is it even POSSIBLE to wear jeans that low??? Who would be comfortable?? I’m waiting for high waisted stuff to come back so I can MOVE when dressed. Those jeans are just absurd!

27 Annie January 29, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I love the look of the boyfriend jeans, but i think you have to have the shape of a 12 year old boy to look good in them. I REALLY wish that when I looked at clothes on websites, I could click on the size and see a model WEARING THAT SIZE. If I click on size 14 jeans, they are not going to show me a size 14 pair of jeans and model. They are going to show me a size 4 or 6 pair of jeans and model.
Totally aware that this is more about my body issues than about the jeans. . . and yeah, i lied. I would have to click on size 16.
Enjoyed this one, as it made me excited about summer!

28 Wendy January 29, 2010 at 2:02 pm

I love love love to read your blog!!! Your hilarious!!!

29 AngAk January 29, 2010 at 4:35 pm

golly, those boyfriend jeans are scary low, or is it just a doctored up picture? Can’t imagine keeping those things up, or bending over without showing way too much. the PJs however are way cute—love the cupcake ones too, but not in my size. sad.

30 Lindsey January 29, 2010 at 6:18 pm

i think i am the only person leaving a non-fashion-related comment here (although great recommendations, as always), but i just wanted to let you know that my husband also complained about our old stainless steel coffee pot. he said it just did not taste the same as in a glass pot. maybe they are on to something…i personally could not tell the difference.

31 tickledpink January 30, 2010 at 1:31 am

I have that Merona top and love it! Merona is killing me every time I go into Target! I have gotten two polka dot dresses and another black dress. That yellow dress is cute! I also saw a pair of nail head gladiator sandals that were to die for this week! I love, love the necklace!

32 Shelly the Chic Crafty Chick January 30, 2010 at 11:21 am

As usual, some fabulous recommendations. Love that striped scarf from Target. Target had a big sale Fri and today. 30% off everything.

I like that Merona top. I wonder if someone with a larger bust could wear that?

Have you seen the Converse at Target? I know they’ve had them. I want a pair in black and pink.

33 Jenny January 30, 2010 at 11:51 am

I have never commented before, but I must admit that I find myself checking your blog often…especially on Fridays. I love to see what kind of treasures you have found for us…

I LOVE my Chuck Taylor All Stars… I have a pair in classic black and one in Kelly Green… They look super with all jeans (well, maybe not the skinny jean), but at least with MOST jeans. They are fun to wear with jeans and a cardy with a fitted t-shirt or with a hoodie for relaxing… I would highly recommend that you give ‘em a whirl… Great, now all this talk about how wonderful they are has me thinking I need another pair (or two!!! LOL)…

Thanks for making me smile!

34 Twice Five Miles January 30, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Argh, I just placed a big order from Old Navy, and now you show me the scarf…

But I am taking my lead from you on wearing gray and coral this summer. Here goes!

35 Kristin January 30, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Love that striped scarf. SO cute!

36 Amanda January 31, 2010 at 9:21 pm

I just wanted to say that I tried that shirt on at target and …not so much! I felt like a bird….what ever kind that has ruffles of feathers around it’s neck. The ruffles should have stopped at the shoulders. But it is adorable on the hanger :) !

37 Rachel February 1, 2010 at 12:45 pm

You know what would be a blast? Well, more for me then you, but would you consider doing a fashion friday maternity edition? It is so dang hard to find fashionable, cute maternity clothes. Especially when you live in a small town in northern Indiana. GLAMOROUS!! Not so much. Just something to consider if you ever feel the need to take request. :) Love your blog, btw.
