For Girls Like You – A giveaway!

April 3, 2013 ·

A few weeks ago I was at a conference called DotMom in Frisco, Texas. Even though now that I think about it, I guess it was really more like a month ago. I have no idea. My last month and a half has been a haze of deadlines and stomach bugs and bundt cakes and battles over Easter sandals.

Anyway, while I was there, I noticed an exhibit for something called For Girls Like You, but I was busy and didn’t have time to stop and check it out. But I was curious because I have a daughter and I’m always on the lookout for anything that might be of use to me as I try to navigate the tricky waters of mothering a girl.

So I was excited when I received an email from Wynter. She’s the founder of For Girls Like You and the mother of four, FOUR, daughters. So, you know, she might know something about raising girls.

For Girls Like You is a ministry to young girls (ages 6-11) and their parents. It includes a quarterly print magazine, journal, and other print and web resources. The purpose is to introduce young girls to Christian values in a relatable way so they can walk passionately and boldly in who God has created them to be.

Wynter sent me a few past editions of the magazine and I gave them to Caroline to see if she’d like them. And she did. She read them in bed at night and told me at one point, “Mom, these have some really good advice about things I think about.”

And, trust me, she wouldn’t just say that. She’s a tough critic.

Today I have the chance to give away a gift pack to one of you. It will include a copy of the For Girls Like You Magabook, a Journal and Spring 2013 Magazine Issue, along with a subscription to the magazine. All you have to do for a chance to win is leave a comment. Maybe you can share how old your daughter is. Or how old your granddaughter is. Or how old the girl you have in mind for this is. Whatever.

One comment per person please. I’ll leave comments open until Friday and then choose a winner using a random number draw.

In honor of my Granddaughter, Aurora Leigh, who although she is only 5, acts older than that because of having to be THE ONLY girl – with two brothers, and 2 sets of 3 boy cousins on each side of the family…and you know, girls rule…especially when all the “older and younger BOYS” get so UN-ruly…somebody has to keep them in line…

Perhaps a “girl” magazine will give her the encouragement she needs to stand strong, love God, and eventually appreciate being surrounded by so much testosterone… “one of these days.”

She is bright, beautiful, loves ballet and all of the “doctor Barbies” and I want to encourage her to be all that God has for her to be – in her world.

    Hugs Aurora,

Our “mini-Diva” grand daughter will be turning 6 on her next birthday. I think her Mama will appreciate all helpful ‘tips’ over the next few years (I won’t call it “advice”, just ‘cuz I’m the mother-in-law!) Would love to be able to give her this. Wish I had, had this type of advice when my 28 yr.old was a ‘min-Diva’.

She prayed lastnight about wanting to be baptized before Jesus returns!! so I am anxious to have resources available to her that will help keep her on the right track. Thank you for the opportunity!

I have a grandaughter who will be 11 in two weeks…. She is already becoming a challenge, LOL. She has blossumed into this dramatic, half child, half tween. Then the next hour she is the same old smiling little girl we all reconize! SHe pouts about having to sing withthe childrens choir, then wants to watch sponge bob when she gets home.
To love her, is a wonderful new experience for me, for my only child was a boy, much, much easier. I have no doubt whe will become a wonderful accomplished adult one day, her parents are still wondering where there little “boo” goes in those times of growing up. I think she would difinetly be able to use this.

I am raising an 18 year old daughter, a 14 year old son, a 9 year old daughter, a 48 year old hubby, 2 great danes, a little half-shih-tzu/half lhasa (we lovingly refer to her as a {lhasa-shiht}), and two cats. Working on my first book now, which is my story of seven years of seizures, depression, and prescription drug addiction. It’s definitely a labor of love because it’s not fun to write…dredging up all of those old, painful memories. My next book will be about the joys and all the other stuff that comes with my crazy family. I LOVE your title and look forward to reading you book! I will be at Allume this year…maybe we’ll meet? Congrats on your book!

I have 2 girls…one is 5 and the other is almost 2. I’ve been thinking lately how hard it is to raise girls in this world full of Toddlers and Tiaras and Dance Moms. All I want is to raise confident, kind, and compassionate little ladies (even when sometimes I am not…just being honest!). That’s why I pray A LOT!

PS…I think you’re hilarious. If I lived in Texas or you lived in Nebraska, I’m sure we’d be best friends…because I am also hilarious. 🙂

Oh my gosh! I hope I’m not too late. I have two daughters. One is 3 and one is 7. So this is right in my 7 year old’s wheel house. Here’s hoping.

Thanks & Gig ’em, Big Mama!

Who is Melanie?

Melanie ShankleMy name is Melanie and, in some strange twist of fate, I’m also known as Big Mama because I started this blog in July of 2006 when my daughter, Caroline, was not quite three years old and I was in the process of convincing her that BIG girls use the potty and BIG girls don’t have pacifiers, thus she thought BIG was the highest compliment in the land and began referring to me as BIG MAMA.Read More

Sometimes it takes a less than stellar season on the field to highlight the things I really love about football season are the people, being with old friends, making new friends, the memories and everything that Texas A&M embodies⁣. There’s a quote Aggies love that says, “From the outside looking in, you don’t understand it. From the inside looking out, you can’t explain it.” Texas A&M is a magical place.

Also, ending the season by beating the hell outta LSU didn’t hurt. Thanks and Gig’em.
