  • Big Boo Cast: Episode 57 (the one where my mic died)

    bigboographic-300x300

So Sophie and I finally managed to record a podcast yesterday afternoon. And we talked about fascinating things like having groceries delivered to your door, television and makeup.

You can click here to listen. Or here. You can even listen right here on the blog.

Or, as always, you can subscribe on iTunes.

Just FYI – here’s where you can get more info on the products / places we mention (these aren’t affiliate links – just regular ole links):

    Shipt Grocery Delivery

    Favor Delivery

    – Here’s the recipe Melanie mentions:

    Melanie’s Chicken & Wild Rice

1 can cream of mushroom soup
    1 soup can milk
1 box Uncle Ben’s long grain wild rice
1 pack chicken breasts, (or legs or thighs)

Preheat oven to 350. Blend soup and milk with rice and rice seasoning packet. Pour into baking dish. Arrange chicken on top. Cover with foil and bake 1 hour. Uncover. Bake 15 more minutes.

(Note from Mel: I usually double this recipe. I’ve also found adding a packet of Lipton Golden Onion soup mix to the rice mixture is a crowd pleaser.)

  • All I need is two (really just one) good wheels

Well. First of all, my feelings about the Aggie basketball team beating the Kentucky Wildcats in overtime on Saturday night are best summed up in the actions of Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller.

And Caroline’s soccer team finished the weekend with a 2-0 win and a 0-0 tie, so it was good weekend for all the sports at our house.

But here’s what I really want to talk about.

    Spin class.

Let me take you all the way back to last August. We were on our way home from the beach and I told P that I really needed to work out more and that I might be interested in trying a spin class. I even texted my friend, Laura, and said, “Hey, I think I want to go to spin class with you some time.” But then it never happened because my follow through is terrible and, basically, I don’t like exercise. I know it can give you a longer life and produces endorphins and blah, blah, blah, but all those episodes of Parenthood aren’t going to watch themselves and sometimes you have to choose your battles.

And then the fall got really hectic and I vowed that after the holidays were over, I was going to get on some sort of exercise routine. But because I am not a follower, I opted to not start in January with the rest of the world who had made New Year’s resolutions. Plus, I felt like I had to get some momentum going on my next book and my prime writing time happens to be mornings which coincides with the most convenient time to go exercise.

Finally, here’s what I know about myself. I am not going to work out twelve months a year. Judge me if you want but I’m just being honest about who I know myself to be and, after almost forty-five years of living, I am fairly self-aware. So I hate to waste my exercise energy on months like January and February when we can wear big sweaters and puffy coats and layers upon layers of clothing. January and February are prime Netflix months.

But apparently Mother Nature didn’t get that memo this year because this has been the warmest February I can ever remember. And last week it actually got hot enough in the afternoon that I put on a pair of shorts and then scared myself when I walked by the mirror because I thought I’d seen a ghost who’d been watching too much Netflix. (And also writing a book. Just in case my beloved editor is reading this.)

It made me realize I was going to have to reset my exercise calendar to accommodate the fact that winter is apparently not happening in South Texas this year. So I texted my friend, Debbi, because I knew she’d recently started going to spin classes at a new place called Cycle Hub that some friends of ours recently opened. Then she invited me to go with her for the next two weeks until I finally ran out of excuses and went through the seven stages of no winter grief and said yes.

Last Thursday evening I went to my first class. And you know that old saying about how you never forget to ride a bike? LIES. ALL LIES. Because even though it’s a stationery bike, I felt a little bit like this.

    giphy

Debbi had promised me the whole thing was a no pressure deal and you can ride at your own pace, but we had an instructor she’d never had before and at one point he walked to the back of the room where we were (Yes, I was at the back of the room. Hoping to achieve invisibility.) and he got in our face and said, “GO! GO! GO!”. Which made me feel like this.

    giphy-6

But I picked up speed and increased my resistance because I am just competitive enough to be a danger to myself and this was essentially the result.

    giphy-2

However, when the class was over I looked at my stats and realized I’d ridden almost fifteen miles and burned over 500 calories and, for those of you doing the wine math, that’s two glasses. Plus I had tons of energy and felt super accomplished and basically had levels of excitement that most people reserve for accomplishments way more complicated than riding a stationery bike in an air-conditioned room while music plays and a disco ball lights everything up.

And so I went back again on Sunday afternoon after we got home from soccer and only felt slightly like this.

    giphy-3

It helped significantly that the instructor played a combination of disco music and, be still my heart, Hopelessly Devoted by Olivia Newton-John. If you’ve never ridden a bike to a song off the Grease soundtrack, then you really haven’t lived. By the time class was over, this was me.

    giphy-4

Well. Until tomorrow morning when the soreness really sets in and this is me.

    giphy-5

Which never happens after watching Netflix.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition I’m too tired to come up with a name

This was just a four day week because Monday was a holiday and I’m so tired right now that I’m not sure how I’d be able to function if it was just Thursday instead of Friday. I guess some weeks just seem longer than others even when there’s a holiday involved.

And in case you’re wondering what we have going on this weekend, I’ll sum it up. Soccer. And then some soccer. And then we’ll top it off with some soccer.

Here are a few cute things I’ve found this week.

    1. double v pullover

    4113086697171_001_b2

This is just a normal v-neck in the front but has the cutest back that gives it a little something extra. It also comes in lavender and bright red and is on sale for $69.95.

    2. j.crew navy and white gingham shirt

    B9491_WN8181

I love a navy gingham shirt for spring and summer because I think it’s such a versatile piece. This one is $34.50 plus you can get an extra 15% off if you sign up for emails.

    3. monogram pendant necklace

    37659125_901_b

I saw this at Anthro the other day and thought it was such a cute take on a monogram necklace. I love the one big letter and it’s just $38.

    4. toms crochet mesh platform wedge

    _12097947

I nearly bought a pair of these last summer because they are so cute and so comfortable, but decided I didn’t need them. However, this crochet version has sold me. They also come in a cream color.

    5. j.crew drapey sleeveless popover shirt

    E8261_BL7929

This is one of those shirts that you’ll wear all spring and summer long because it will look equally great with jeans, shorts, or a skirt. It’s $34.50 and comes in a bunch of great colors.

    6. loft dash flare dress

    imageService

In this week’s edition of What Would Joanna Gaines wear, I present this dress. I’ve noticed lately that she wears a lot of different cute, flowy shift dresses. And I really like this one because it can totally be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

    7. olive skinny jeans

    cn10452606

I saw these in Gap the other day and decided that what’s missing from my life is a pair of olive colored skinny jeans.

    8. altar’d state break the mold kimono

    ba4318_f_ivory-navy-copy

I’m a big fan of the kimono because they are versatile and add a little something extra to just a normal t-shirt or tank with jeans or shorts.

    9. fringed swim coverup

    _12147088

This coverup comes in several different colors and is perfect for throwing on over a swimsuit.

    10. noonday comet earrings

    EA169AU-comet-earrings-s

Noonday launched their spring collection yesterday and there are a bunch of cute things, but these earrings really stood out to me.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a great Friday.

  • Thursday things

I meant to write a quick post last night, but Caroline and I went to go see Priscilla Shirer and Anthony Evans on their Fervent Tour because it was in San Antonio. It was really good and you should totally go if they are coming to a city near you.

But, anyway, we got home late and I resorted to eating a handful of granola for dinner because I was starving but I hate to eat and then get in bed and that’s the end of this sad story.

Side note: We have become completely obsessed with the granola from Bird Bakery. This is not an advertisement, just fact. It’s so good because it’s sweet and a little bit salty which is the best combination ever.

So I thought about just waiting to do Fashion Friday because I normally don’t write blog posts at 9:20 on a Thursday morning. But here I am throwing caution to the wind and doing exactly that. There is no telling where this may lead.

Here are just a few quick things I wanted to share:

    1. Speaking Events

I’m only doing a few speaking events this Spring because I am in the middle of a book deadline and any other free time I have is spent driving Caroline to soccer games and/or soccer practice. But here are the events I’m doing that are open to the public.

February 25 – Tell Your Story – Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M

I was super excited to be asked to speak at this leadership forum for Aggies because, well, they are my people. It’s open to anyone though. Tickets are $5.00 and you can buy them at the door.

April 4 – Fiesta of Faith – First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio

April 12 – Bloom Women’s Event – Crossroads Baptist Church in The Woodlands, TX

    2. Mix and Match Cookbooks

I’ve mentioned in the past that I’ve cooked some of Shay Shull’s recipes from her Mix and Match blog and now she has two cute little cookbooks out that make meal planning easier than ever. Well, unless you count the personal grocery shopper/chef option I wished for earlier in the week. These would make a great gift for a new bride or anyone who needs a little help in the kitchen with simple, easy recipes.

Mix and Match Meal Planner: Your Weekly Guide to Getting Dinner on the Table

    61vqet8uhLL._SX487_BO1,204,203,200_

Mix and Match Cakes: The Simple Secret to 101 Delicious, Wow-Worthy Cakes

    61R4ZzaL7-L._SX496_BO1,204,203,200_

And the first one is currently the number one book in the Tribal & Ethnic Religious Practices section on Amazon. Which just serves to confirm two things:

    – Amazon is whacked out

    – Maybe cooking dinner every night is a cult-like activity and should be viewed with suspicion

    3. Happy Hour podcast

My friend Jamie Ivey has a great podcast and always has on really good guests. I thought you might like to listen while Sophie and I continue to be on a podcast hiatus. This past week Jamie interviewed Sally Lloyd-Jones, author of the Jesus Storybook Bible. You can listen here.

    That’s it for this Thursday.

  • Hi

Well I hope you all had a lovely Presidents/Valentine’s Day weekend and gathered around a tree covered in ornaments depicting all the various U.S. Presidents while singing Valentine’s Day carols with your friends and loved ones.

Of course now it’s already Wednesday so the weekend is kind of a distant memory at this point, but I know that it was a nice one around here. On Friday night, P and I went to dinner while Caroline was at a friend’s birthday party and then we spent Saturday just relaxing around the house, although we did run by Gulley’s for a little bit because it was Will’s birthday and we brought him his present. As luck would have it, I received a whole shipment of Guiness Book of World Records in the mail the day before and so I added those to his birthday gift because what eleven year old boy doesn’t enjoy learning gross things like that someone can lift 100 pounds with their eyeball?

Then Saturday night P cooked steaks for us and we sat outside and looked at the stars for a long time after dinner. I downloaded an app on my phone called Sky Guide and it shows you all the constellations you can find in the sky depending on your location and I was shocked to learn that my guess of “That’s the little dipper!” to all the different star configurations turned out to be highly inaccurate. And by shocked, I mean that it didn’t surprise me at all because I have also been known to mistake airplanes for falling stars.

On Sunday morning, P and Caroline left for her soccer game in Killeen at 6:45 a.m. This was the best Valentine’s Day gift I could have received – not having to go to Killeen at the crack of dawn. I spoke at church and then caught up on American Idol on the DVR while waiting for my people to get home. One of Caroline’s teammates ended up spending the night with us Sunday since Monday was a school holiday. I was fine with the sleepover until Caroline asked, “So where are we going to go? What are you taking us to do?”

    Um. Nothing.

The sleepover is the entertainment. You’re welcome.

And now here we are in the middle of a new week. Honestly, there just isn’t much going on here unless you count driving to soccer practice, trying to write a book, and wishing that I had a chef who would just show up and cook dinner for us every night. Is that too much to ask?

Also, Sophie and I are really and truly going to find time to record a new podcast. I realize it’s been forever, but we just haven’t been able to do it between our schedules.

Anyway, I really just wanted to say hi. So hi.

    Have a great Wednesday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition happy valentine’s and president’s day

So this Sunday is Valentine’s Day. P and I have very romantic plans which involve me speaking at church while he drives Caroline to a soccer game. It’s exactly like a Hallmark card. But we do have plans to go out for dinner tonight. Not because it’s Valentine’s Day weekend but because Caroline has plans and we have an evening to ourselves and we know we better take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself.

In other Valentine’s related news, I saw this online yesterday and it made me laugh.

    valentines-day-pictures-funny

As for cute things I’ve found online this week, here you go:

    1. floral print lace up maxi dress

    _12091713

Free People has a version of this, but it’s kind of wonky. But I love this because it really does look like it’s right out of the 60’s and I think it has the potential to be really great.

    2. long cocoon cardigan

    _11507971

I love these lightweight cocoon cardigans because, well, they’re lightweight. And they are perfect to throw on over everything from a long sleeve shirt to a tank top, depending on the weather. This blue would be really pretty with white jeans.

    3. elan crochet coverup

    _11644566

What? A swimsuit coverup in February? MADNESS. But I figure some of you might be headed somewhere tropical for Spring Break and I really like this.

    4. beach blanket bingo swimsuit

    b19905adc68f4a96cccff0509952c9a3

I know. A swimsuit. Bleh. But look how cute and retro it is! And ModCloth has so many cute swimsuits so it’s a great place to look for one if you find yourself in need.

    5. tassel faux leather crossbody bag

    _12067007

I saw in the Nordstrom catalog that a must have for spring is a crossbody bag. And I agree because they really are so easy to carry around. I love this one by Sole Society and it also comes in black.

    6. j.crew plaid gauze popover shirt

    C3545_MF5866

Last week we talked about WWJGD (What Would Joanna Gaines Do?) and I feel like this plaid popover from J.Crew fits that category.

    7. j.crew skinny cargo pants

    E7630_GR7092

These pants are also a WWJGD. And they’d look great paired with the shirt above and some Converse.

    8. timex originals leather strap watch

    _10671732

I was actually looking for this watch with a brown leather strap, but I saw this white leather and kind of fell in love with it.

    9. gap stripe crew sweatshirt

    cn10633705

I featured this a couple of weeks ago and mentioned I’d ordered it but I hadn’t received it yet. I can now say that I adore it. It’s super soft and very cute. But I will tell you that I ordered a large because I wanted it kind of big and roomy and I do not regret that decision.

    10. sam edelman gemma lace up sandals

    _11730032

How cute are these sandals? I love that they have the lace up feature of a gladiator but without the full calf commitment. I could never wear sandals laced all the way up to my knees because 1. I am claustrophobic and 2. THE HEAT. But I think this version is a great play on the trend for those of us who can’t go full Marcus Aurelius.

    That’s it for today.

Have a great Friday. And a good Valentine’s Day.

    And a Happy President’s Day.

At least one of those calls for some cake.
