  • Fashion Friday: Edition sale! everything’s on sale!

I wasn’t going to post a Fashion Friday, but then I saw all kinds of things on sale after Christmas and I couldn’t resist sharing a few quick things that I love. Some of you may have some Christmas money burning a hole in your pocket.

    1. mira-morano infinity scarf

    2. galina dress

I’ve had my eye on this for a while. It also comes in green, navy, and teal but I think I like this color the best. It’s ad additional 25% off with code 25below.

    3. cozy sweater dress

    30513105_004_a

I think this is cute to throw on with jeans or leggings.

    4. fringe hooded cardigan

    29558780_040_a

    5. asymmetrical fleece wrap cardigan

This comes in several other colors and is on sale for $39.90.

    6. novelty stitch wrap

    _8450005

This wrap is gorgeous, comes in several colors and is on sale for $33.98.

    7. gapfit gdance pants

    cn5321661

I bought a pair of these in the fall after an extensive search for a new pair of yoga pants. I like these because they’re slimming and they are a sim bootcut which I like better than a wider leg. They are on sale plus an extra 30% off with code GAPBONUS

    8. hunter rain boots

    2389702-p-MULTIVIEW

Zappos has these rain boots on sale in the moss green, brick red and dark ruby. They are absolutely the best and such a cute addition to rainy day outfits.

    Have a great Friday.

  • Big Boo Cast: Episode Merry Christmas

On Saturday afternoon Sophie and I decided it might be a good idea to record a Christmas podcast. And so we did.

I don’t remember everything we talked about, but I know we discussed our eyelashes for at least five minutes. So, you know, we stuck with our normal, hard-hitting podcast fare.

You can click here to listen. Or here. Or, as always, you can subscribe on iTunes.

And I don’t know how much I’ll be around in the next week or so and I’m giving myself the freedom to not commit to anything. I have big plans to read a lot of books, watch a lot of movies, eat a lot of sugar cookies and do all of those things with the people I love. I hope you do the same.

    Merry Christmas!

  • Fashion Friday: Edition it’s almost Christmas

    Screenshot_11_18_13_11_06_PM

I think I officially finished all my pre-Christmas errands yesterday. At least the ones I remembered.

I’ll still have to make one last trip to HEB at some point but I choose to think about that another day. Right now I’m just living for 3:05 this afternoon when Caroline is officially out of school for the holidays and we can commence with all the festivities.

Anyway, here are a few things I found this week:

    1. gap fit training hoodie

    cn7230039

I bought one of these hoodies early in the fall and I might wear it three times a week. It’s so soft and I love to wear it to work out or just to look like I’ve worked out. Either way.

And, best of all, Gap is having big sales right now. Yesterday everything online and in stores was 40% off. That’s a steal.

    2. comete cardigan

    30102693_011_b

I love this. It’s on sale at Anthropologie and it comes in a really pretty dark green color.

    3. ellesmere tunic

    29583119_001_b

I’ve been waiting for this top to go on sale and it finally did. I tried it on in Anthropologie about a month ago and fell in love, but didn’t want to pay full price.

It’s the perfect length to throw on with leggings.

    4. lodge down parka

    EB12ID_0067494_100C1

I’ve been looking for a good winter coat with a fur-lined hood. I really like this one and several others at Eddie Bauer right now. And they’re all 40-50% off. It’s a good time to buy a new coat.

    5. hooded long sweater

    _7431390

Speaking of sales, I’ve had my eye on this sweater for a while now and was so excited to see that it’s finally marked down to $47.40.

    6. life’s a beach tunic sweater

    _8521275

This isn’t on sale. But I really like it.

    7. canyon edge hooded duster cardigan

    30233_2

This reminds me a lot of my Free People sweater coat I bought last year. It’s almost exactly the same but in different colors. And I’ll just tell you that you won’t regret owning it. I love mine.

    8. all is calm cape cardigan

    30218

I am so intrigued by this. A cape. A cardigan. And look how cute it is from the back. I think I’m in love.

    9. oversized sheer knit cardigan

    _8612450

Gulley and I saw these in Nordstrom last week and thought they were so cute. Lightweight and easy to just throw on, plus it comes in a ton of colors and a striped version.

    10. hunter tall gloss rainboots

    _8185038

I love my Hunter rain boots. Granted, it hardly rains in San Antonio but when it does, I’m ready. And this deep purple color is on sale.

And now writing deep purple has led me to this.

Donnie Osmond. My first love. This was at a time in my life when I thought he could see me sitting on the other side of our RCA console television. And so I wore my purple socks every time I watched.

If only I’d known then about purple rain boots.

(They also come in a ton of other colors, but the purple are on sale and I happen to think they’re pretty. I bet Donnie Osmond would too.)

    And that’s it for today.

    Have a great Friday.

  • You have questions, sometimes I have answers

    Well.

So let me tell you first that I had no idea my new canvas says, “…signing loud for the world to hear.” And I’ve had it up for a month. Don’t be jealous of my acute observation skills.

P always contends that I am the worst about noticing my surroundings and that I would be terrible if I ever had to pick a criminal out of a police line up. And now I’ve only confirmed his theory.

I guess the upside is if we didn’t already have an inside family joke about “signing loud for the world to hear”, we do now. Nice.

Here are a few other things you had questions about from yesterday’s post.

    1. Mantle

So I talked about my new stockings and felt garland and then totally forgot to show you a picture.

    photo-18

    2. Bible study

I had so many emails asking questions about Caroline’s Bible study yesterday.

I started thinking over the summer that I’d love to host a Bible study for Caroline and a few of her friends. Years ago when P and I were in youth ministry, I knew that some of our high school girls would do a Bible study for elementary school girls and that’s what I wanted because I think it’s invaluable for young girls to see girls who are just a few years ahead of them walking in their faith.

So I contacted a few of our friends who are in youth ministry and asked them if they knew any girls that might be interested and the same two names kept coming up. I contacted those girls and they were excited about it.

We meet every other week at my house. The high school girls prepare the lesson and we meet for an hour on Sunday afternoons from 3:30-4:30. This seemed to be the best time because most girls don’t have practices or games on Sundays.

It started off with only a few girls until we figured out if we could add more and now we plan to add girls as we move into Spring. I cannot say enough about it. Caroline and her friends love it and it’s perfect for us because we as much as we love our church, we live fairly far away and Caroline doesn’t go to school with any of the kids in her Sunday School class. This gives her a chance to connect with school friends in a way that’s different from sports or other activities.

If you’re thinking of doing something like this, I’d highly recommend contacting the youth pastor at your church or a neighborhood church or maybe a Young Life director to get some names of high school kids that might be interested in doing something like this. I’ve been so impressed with the lessons the high school girls have come up with for the girls each week. They’ve talked about being thankful, fear, being a good friend and having faith. Each week they do the lesson for about thirty minutes and then the girls just hang out for the other thirty minutes.

    3. Couch

A few of you asked about my couch. It’s eleven years old and I bought it at a local furniture store that’s now out of business. I know it was made by Lee Industries. I had white slipcovers made for it about a year ago and even though they get dirtier much faster than I care to admit, I still love the way it looks.

And the good news is I can unzip everything, throw it in the wash with some Oxi-Clean and it looks brand new. Sometimes that lasts for longer than ten minutes.

    4. Snowflakes

As for the snowflakes, it was a lot of trial and error. But we finally consulted Pinterest and found a post about how to fold paper to get the best shape. It’s right here if you want to check it out, but there are tons of ways to make snowflakes if you just search “How to make snowflakes” on Pinterest.

Then we started off using this website with snowflake patterns as a guide. We didn’t manage to achieve any that looked like this, but it gave us a good idea of how to cut and shapes that look good. We also used a single hole punch on some of them to get perfectly round cuts.

And then we hung them on the wall using scotch tape because we are very fancy.

I think next year I may want to decorate my whole Christmas tree with nothing but white lights and homemade snowflakes.

And that’s all I have for today. I was in a recording studio for eight hours yesterday recording the audio version of The Antelope in the Living Room and feel that I am out of words.

Which works out since I have no voice left.

See you tomorrow for Fashion Friday.

  • A little Christmas tour

First of all, thank you for being excited about the new book. There will be more to come in the future as we get closer to the official release date, including a giveaway that I’m so excited about. Sadly, it doesn’t involve you getting your very own antelope. I apologize in advance.

Secondly, I need to clear up that I do not actually have a house in my wall that has frames arranged in the shape of a heart. I’m so sorry to disappoint those of you that thought that was a real thing, but so appreciate that you thought somewhere in me I had the capacity to take the time to meticulously arrange frames in the shape of a heart.

(Also, a few of you didn’t realize it was a heart and thought it was supposed to be an antelope head. To you I say, SO DID I. P was actually the one that pointed out it was the shape of a heart. Whatever. So I lack an artistic eye.)

But there is some good news. Several of you asked to see a better picture of my wall of plates from Monday’s post. And that is a real thing. Granted, I didn’t come up with it myself. I had help from Holly Mathis of Holly Mathis Interiors. And when I say I had help, I mean she did the whole thing.

    Photobucket

But isn’t it so cute? We used a mix of plates that we found at Anthropologie, World Market, Pier One and some antique stores.

And while I’m showing pictures, I figured I would go ahead and show some of my Christmas decor. Here’s a better shot of the tree.

    photo-15

And the deer behind the tree.

    photo-14

Normally he’d have a Santa hat on but I have been unable to locate said hat.

Then there’s the mantle. I especially love it this year because I have a new personalized canvas from The Canvas Boutique, plus I ordered new stockings and a felt ball garland from Etsy.

Here’s a close up of the canvas. It’s a mix of all our family Christmas sayings and traditions.

    photo-24

In the kitchen I just hung wreaths in the windows with the red chevron ribbon I bought from Hob Lob and was worried I’d regret. As it turns out, I’m so glad I bought it and the only thing I regret is my poor photography skills.

    photo-16

And I hung some festive dish towels on the oven because I am fancy.

    photo-23

Why, yes. That is a bunny dressed like Santa. Thank you for asking.

I filled my dough bowl on the dining room table with ornaments, greenery and a few deer antlers for good measure.

    photo-20

And then decided to use this little tree made of cardboard that I bought a few years ago as our Jesse Tree where we hang our ornaments from The Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp.

    photo-17

I added a Christmas pillow to our couch because I am like Martha Stewart except not. Gulley bought me this pillow last Christmas and it’s one of my favorites.

    photo-21

And, finally, my favorite decoration every year.

    photo-19

The flowerpot nativity that Caroline made when she was three. I feel of all the nativity scenes you see, this one most accurately depicts Mary’s emotional state. Those eyes and that hair make her look just a wee bit frazzled. As is understandable when you’ve traveled many miles on a donkey only to be told you’re giving birth in a stable.

And that’s pretty much it. I ended up leaving at least half of my Christmas decorations packed away this year, but I’m liking things a little cleaner and a little simpler.

Speaking of, the other day Caroline was having some friends over for Bible study and wanted to make a Christmas dessert. And I didn’t want to have to make a trip to the store. So we made Edie’s best ever brownies because I had all the ingredients and then just crushed candy canes to sprinkle all over the top. They were divine.

I would have taken a picture but they didn’t last long enough.

We also spent some time making snowflakes and it was probably my favorite moment of the Christmas season so far. We taped them up on the wall in her playroom and have decided our goal is to cover the wall before Christmas is here.

    photo-27

It’s so much prettier than that photo conveys and every time I see it I think of the lyrics to Audrey Assad’s song Winter Snow.

You came like a winter snow
    Quiet and soft and slow
Falling from the sky in the night
    To the earth below

Here’s the whole song if you want to listen.

For me, it’s a reminder that the best moments of Christmas are often the ones that come without any fanfare or planning. They just show up and surprise you in their own sweet way.

Like cutting out snowflakes with a sweet ten-year-old girl who won’t be ten forever.

  • Because everyone needs a last minute gift idea

So I haven’t talked much about my second book.

But it seems appropriate to talk about it at Christmas time given that this is the picture that basically gave me the entire premise for it.

And, lo, an antelope of the Lord appeared and the glory shone round about him.

The next book is called The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life.

    Or TAITLR for short.

(Not really. I just made that up. Not one time until now has it been referred to as TAITLR.)

This is what the book cover looks like. I cannot even deal with how much I love it.

    antelope-book-cover

And this is the video trailer.

Let us never speak of those overall shorts I’m wearing again. It was a dark time called 1997.

Anyway, I just thought I’d mention it now even though it doesn’t come out until February 4th because it could make a great gift for someone in your life. Nothing says Christmas love and joy like “Hey, I bought you this book that you won’t get until February 4th!”

There’s even a free, printable greeting card that you can download and print to wrap up and put under the tree. Or in a stocking. Or wherever you put your gifts. The gift card can be found by clicking here and then clicking on the icon that says Download A Greeting Card.

It doesn’t matter where you buy it. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble (it’s currently less than $10 at both of those places), and other major booksellers.

For more information and a list of all retailers, you can visit the official Antelope in the Living Room book page.

I hope you and your friends will have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.
