  • Fashion Friday: Edition it’s a mixed bag ‘o stuff

I’m in the midst of a bang crisis.

Those of you who’ve read this blog for any length of time will not find this to be unusual in any way, shape or form. And it’s not. I live my life on the very edge of a bang crisis at all times.

To have bangs? To not have bangs? That is the real question, Hamlet.

Way back in late November I got my hair cut. I told my sweet hairdresser that I wanted her to cut my bangs just the way she did at my previous haircut, but to leave them just a little bit longer than usual because I had somewhere to go the following weekend and I wanted to be at my best bangs self.

For those of you with bangs, you know what I’m talking about. They’re always at their best about two weeks after the initial haircut. Or maybe that’s just when I finally figure out what to do with them.

So she cut them beautifully and they were immediately the perfect length. But then Christmas came and I noticed they were getting a little too long and then January happened and I’ve spent most of this month with them pulled back with a bobby pin.

Yesterday I realized I have inadvertently almost grown out my bangs. They are officially too long to rest on my forehead and hide my wrinkles. I called to make a hair appointment and found out my hairdresser is going out of town and I can’t get my hair cut until February 8th.

Which means I will be led into the valley of the shadow of temptation to pull out my kitchen scissors and trim them myself. And, OH BRITNEY, that would not end well.

Maybe I should invest in a hat. And more bobby pins. And maybe a headband.

Or maybe I could just curl them under, tease them and hairspray them like I did from 1984-1990.

Anyway, enough about my bangs that are no longer really bangs but rather awkward hair that falls in my face. Here are a few cute things I’ve seen this week:

    1. Tahari booties

I believe I’ve mentioned that I’ve been on the lookout for some booties. Not to be confused with being on the lookout for some booty because this isn’t that kind of blog.

I think these are really cute and they’re on sale.

    2. engla trench

Like Anthropologie can ever do any wrong.

I love this trench. And it’s on sale.

    3. tie-dye maxi dress

I realize this is a totally random thing to feature in the middle of January when several of you are digging out from the snow in your driveway. But it’s on sale and I think it would be such a great thing to have this summer to wear over your bathing suit or to dinner when you’re on some great vacation to the beach.

Snow in the winter? Beach in the summer? Why do I envision that you all have much more fascinating and diverse lives than me?

    4. jersey boat neck dress

Sophie told me about this dress yesterday. I wanted to rush up to Old Navy but then a cold front blew in and I got buried under a fleece blanket on my couch.

She said it looks great with leggings and is so comfortable. And I believe her because why would she lie about that?

    5. trop troop anorak

I’ve had a hankering for an anorak for some time now.

Although I’m sidetracked by my decision to use the term “hankering”.

    6. lofty down tunic

Perfect to throw on with a pair of jeans.

    7. bazaar charms earrings

I saw these at Banana Republic and fell in love. Just gorgeous.

    8. shirt dress

My friend Julie had on a dress very similar to this the other day with leggings and tall boots and I thought it looked so cute. Plus it’s a great transition piece once warmer weather decides to show up. Which could be tomorrow since we live in Texas.

    9. daisy ring

This ring feels like spring to me.

    10. chartreuse or dare tunic

Okay. In theory I like this. But it would all depend on how it looks in person and how it hangs and all those other components that make it hard for me to commit to something I haven’t actually seen in real life.

I also realize chartreuse can be a tricky color. Still, though, it has some definite appeal.

    11. lace print boho blouse

Eleven? So random to have a list of eleven things.

But I got my Sundance catalog in the mail yesterday and this blouse was on the cover and I just saw it sitting on my coffee table and remembered how much I liked it.

    So there you have it.

    Eleven things.

Oh, on a totally different note, I’ll email the winner of the Red Letter Words giveaway by 6:00 p.m. this evening, but there is still time to enter until then. Y’all have a great Friday.

  • A quilt pieced together with love and random

I have sat here for the last hour and debated just posting one sentence that reads, “I HAVE NOTHING”. But that’s not entirely true. I have a few things I want to tell you but none of them are related to each other and I currently lack the skill and ambition to try to weave them all together like a random patchwork quilt.

Of course, technically, I guess you don’t weave a quilt at all. Which may be part of my problem.

So here are the pieces of the quilt that never will be:

    1. For those of you who may have missed the announcement, I chose Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls for our first book. You can get all the details from the original post.

    2. Don’t forget about the Red Letter Words giveaway. It ends Friday and you can enter by leaving a comment on my giveaway page.

    3. I believe I’ve mentioned that I’m a huge fan of Ann Voskamp. Which is why I can’t wait to read her new book One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Where You Are. I have no doubt that it’s amazing.

    4. Speaking of books, I’m going to give away a copy of my friend Gregg Matte’s book, Finding God’s Will: Seek Him, Know Him, Take the Next Step, next Tuesday.

I was going to do it today but then I felt like it might be like GIVEAWAYS AHOY and I’d get overwhelmed by all the choosing of the random numbers. So instead I’ll just create a buzz about it happening next week. I read this book in about two days and LOVED every word. It is just so, so good.

    5. Is it just me or do I seem to know a lot of people who write books?

    6. Yesterday I was driving Caroline to gymnastics. We just watched Princess Diaries last weekend and she asked me why the boy in the movie wasn’t very nice to Anne Hathaway’s character. (I can’t remember any character names. I apologize that I have the short term memory of a gnat, but can remember the words to a T.V. show theme song that I watched thirty years ago.)

Anyway, I explained that the boy wasn’t very nice and he only wanted to be friends with Anne Hathaway after he found out she was a princess.

Caroline said, “Oh. Well why did he do that?”

Recognizing a teachable moment, I replied, “Well there are some people that are like that. They don’t really care about you unless they think you can do something for them or if you have something they want. It would be like if someone was never very nice to you but then heard you had a cool toy and wanted to come over and play with it.”

    “Oh.”

I continued, “It’s called using someone for something and you never want to do that. You should be genuinely nice to everyone no matter who they are or what they have. You should always look at what’s inside a person’s heart and not who they are on the outside.”

“Okay. Did you know kids eat free at Pizza Hut on Tuesday nights?”

    I had no idea.

Obviously my lecture on human kindness made an enormous impact.

    7. I just watched American Idol and was pleasantly surprised to find that I like J. Lo and Steven Tyler as judges. I thought he was funny and she was very pleasant and not at all diva-like. We’ll see how it goes as the season plays it but, as of now, I’m in.

Of course some of my fondness may be due to the fact that I once rode in an elevator with Steven Tyler at the Red Carpet Inn in Omaha, Nebraska and have considered him to be a friend ever since even though we didn’t say a word to each other. I was with Gulley’s stepdad, Big, and I think he totally intimidated Steven Tyler. Probably because he was two feet taller than him.

    8. I’ve been meaning to mention this to my San Antonio and surrounding area peeps. Priscilla Shirer is going to be speaking here in town on February 25-26th at Alamo City Church. If you’ve heard Priscilla speak before then you know you don’t want to miss it. If you haven’t ever heard Priscilla, I will tell you DON’T MISS IT.

You can register for the event and find out more information on the LifeWay event page. It’s going to be so good.

    9. We finally took down our outdoor Christmas decorations on Tuesday. And by “we”, I mean P. I was very busy pretending I had a lot of errands to run. This did not stop him from sending me the occasional text message that read “Seriously? You had to weave the lights in and out of the porch railing?”

He should know me well enough to know that my OCD is going to come out full-force when it comes to that kind of stuff. Obsessive disorders don’t take a holiday, the holidays only make them worse.

Feel free to put that on your Christmas card next year. It’s a tender sentiment.

    Y’all have a great day.

  • I also may have wanted to be Laverne DeFazio

Just when I thought it might be a waste to have over two hundred television channels, P and I discovered a show called Truth Behind the Sitcom Scandals on the Bio channel. We have spent the last hour learning that George and Weezie Jefferson learned their show was cancelled when they read it in the paper and Pinky Tuscadero was arrested last year for shooting out the windows of two cars in her neighborhood. I also had the opportunity to impress P with the fact that I know all the words to the theme song from One Day At A Time.

(This is it. This is life, the one you get, so go and have a ball.)

(I may have had a small crush on Schneider the handyman.)

(Let’s not think about how disturbing it is that I had a crush on a mustachioed handyman that wore a denim vest.)

Anyway, I think it’s obvious that there isn’t much on T.V. right now and P has watched all his recorded episodes of Uncle Ted’s Spirit of the Wild. Of course I still haven’t had a chance to watch The Bachelor but I’d rather saw off my right arm than watch it with P in the same room.

And speaking of T.V., I have finally managed to suck Caroline in to the world of Little House on the Prairie. This has been a goal of mine for, oh, the last twenty years when I didn’t even know if I’d have a child but if I did I wanted to make sure she’d watch what I believe to be one of the greatest shows ever.

It has not been an easy achievement, but I happened to see the “Blizzard” episode was on the other day. Remember the episode where Miss Beetle sends all the kids home from school early on Christmas Eve because it’s snowing and a terrible blizzard blows in and the men have to go out in search of the kids while the womenfolk and Doc Baker stay in the schoolhouse and give the children brandy to help with the frostbite? The whole thing just fascinated me as a kid and I spent hours pretending that my bedroom was the schoolhouse and there was a terrible blizzard going on outside.

(I understand if this revelation, along with my crush on Schneider, makes you have questions about what I was like as a kid.)

Anyway, I recorded the episode on the DVR in the hopes that Caroline would find it as appealing as I did when I was her age. And it TOTALLY WORKED. She’s watched it at least five times in the last few days and has requested that I record other episodes of the show. Unfortunately, I’d blocked out the part where Mr. McGinnis dies of frostbite and Pa Ingalls finds him in the snow. I’ve had to assure her that we live in South Texas and the odds of succumbing to frostbite are pretty much nonexistent unless you stick yourself in the freezer.

(Although I am pretty cold right now sitting on my couch and the fleece blanket doesn’t seem to be helping. Of course that might be because I grab a sweater to ward off the chill if the temperatures drop below 75. Clearly I wouldn’t have cut it in Walnut Grove.)

Now that Project Watch Little House on the Prairie has been achieved, my new goal is to eventually introduce her to the wonder that is Happy Days.

But I won’t let her know about Pinky Tuscadero and the car window incident. There are some things in life you’d rather not know.

Like that Mr. McGinnis died of frostbite.

  • Maybe I really am Oprah

It is with great joy that I tell you that, as of this writing, Caroline and I have dodged the stomach bug. However, I am feeling a little bit queasy but also accept that I can be a big hypochondriac with psychosomatic tendencies. I’m trying to be a big girl and mind over matter the whole thing. We’ll see how that plays out.

Of course if the likelihood of Caroline or me getting through this whole thing unscathed is proportionate with the amount of bleach and Lysol I’ve used today, then we should be aces.

In other news, I need to confess that our outdoor Christmas decorations are still up. It’s been weighing heavy on my soul, but apparently not heavy enough to actually do anything about it. I truly feel ashamed that our outdoor decor has outlasted not only Epiphany, but even Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Especially because our sweet neighbors across the street called a few days ago to make sure everything was okay since they couldn’t help but notice our porch is still bedecked in red ribbons, garland and multi-colored lights.

    Shameful.

But in our defense it has been very cold and rainy over the last few days. I have no excuse for all the days prior to that.

And now you’re wondering why on earth the title of this post is Maybe I Really Am Oprah. Do I have some inside information? Does Oprah leave the Christmas lights up in her rose garden and her Chicago penthouse way too long? Is Oprah the scourge of her neighborhood?

As far as I know the answer is no.

But Oprah has a book club. And so do I. (At least for the next five weeks!)

And Oprah gives things away. And over the next two weeks I have three different giveaways scheduled.

Before you get too excited, I should warn you that none of these things are trips or cars or Tory Burch bags. However, they are a few things that I love and that’s why I want to give you a chance to win.

So, everyone in the audience is getting A CHANCE TO ENTER A GIVEAWAY!

It lacks a little something doesn’t it?

But, seriously, you don’t want to miss the first giveaway. It’s a 12 x 12 gallery-wrapped canvas print of your choice from Red Letter Words.

Click over to my giveaway page and leave a comment there to enter.

It’s like Christmas came early! Or late!

    Just like my front yard.

  • If you don’t hear from me in 24 hours, you’ll know why

Well, it’s sad times here at our house. P has been stricken by what appears to be the stomach bug that I’d thought we’d managed to dodge. As I sit here on the couch watching The Golden Globes and wondering if Sandra Bullock’s bangs are of the clip-on variety, he has been quarantined to our bedroom. I should probably go check on him but I’d hate to wake him up. Or worse, catch what he has.

However, I think we all know that once the stomach virus enters a home it takes no prisoners. Which is why I’ve been very careful about what I eat tonight since there’s a good chance it might end up on a list of foods that are dead to me.

The irony is that I really thought Caroline was coming down with something. On Thursday night she was completely congested and had that glassy look in her eye that is usually a harbinger that cold season is about to take you down. We were up several times during the night and I even offered to let her stay home from school on Friday, but she insisted she wanted to go because it was the end of the 9 week grading period and she was desperate for perfect attendance.

    That trait skipped my generation.

After school on Friday she seemed better but we still laid low most of the weekend. It was rainy and cold here which is the kind of weather that just begs you to stay in your pajamas and be completely unproductive. And who am I to say no?

Late Saturday afternoon, Caroline had another basketball game. It brought me as much joy as the first one except they were playing a team of girls that seemed to have a little more experience. Which is my polite way of saying they were way too aggressive according to the league rules and the refs didn’t call them on it. Not that I’m bitter about it.

When the game was over, P and Caroline packed up and left to go to the ranch for the night. And I was ALL BY MYSELF. I debated all my various options and ultimately chose pajamas, the couch, homemade mac and cheese for dinner and the Miss America pageant.

And let me tell you, I chose well, young Jedi.

(Is that even a real line from Star Wars? It seems right but I am not a fan of the Star Wars movies because they involve space and spaceships and science fiction.)

I grew up watching the Miss America pageant. It always seemed like such a big event. I’d grab my little notebook and keep track of various scores as they scrolled across the screen. It probably speaks to the fact that I grew up in the 70’s that I truly believed that being Miss America was the female equivalent of a boy growing up to become the President of the United States. A boy would have to work hard, make good grades, build a political resume, but all a girl had to do was be able to play a decent rendition of Moon River on the spoons and have hair that defied the laws of gravity for all her dreams to come true.

In recent years I haven’t watched many pageants. I think this is directly related to the fact that most pageants are no longer aired on a major network and I forget to regularly check the T.V. Guide to see what’s on CMT. But on Saturday night, ABC brought the pageant back complete with our favorite host of bad television, Chris Harrison. Well done, ABC. Well done.

And so what could have been an average Saturday night with carbs and pajamas, turned into a veritable extravaganza of sparkly gowns, big hair, smiles that have seen more than their share of Crest Whitestrips, and black two-piece swimsuits that looked like the underwear section of a 1978 J.C. Penney catalog.

My cup was already overflowing when the talent portion began. American viewers were treated to an array of talent that included a rendition of Papa Was A Rolling Stone and an Irish Riverdance complete with a moonwalk.

And then Miss Arkansas showed the world that she was a yodeling ventriloquist. At that point I might as well have just turned off the T.V. because the only thing that could have topped it is if one of the contestants had answered, “Is that NeNe Leakes’ sister?” when asked about the WikiLeaks controversy during the interview portion.

But these girls were way too polished for that. Miss Nebraska even used the word “espionage” in her answer which is probably why she is our new Miss America.

And, bottom line, no one admires how well you can engage in a debate about national healthcare when you look that good in a swimsuit. Although I’m sure I’ve turned heads at the neighborhood pool when people hear me discuss my thoughts on U.S. foreign policy.

After the pageant was over I still wanted to make the most of my free night so I watched P.S. I Love You with Hillary Swank and thought it was pretty good. I also can’t figure out why no one ever mentioned that Harry Connick, Jr. is in it because I would have seen it long before now had I known.

I went to church on Sunday morning and came home with tentative plans to go see The King’s Speech before P and Caroline got home. But then P called and said they were on their way.

They walked in and P announced he wasn’t feeling great. Unfortunately he didn’t mention it until after I’d kissed him hello. And then I went to unpack Caroline’s bag and came across several bones from various dead animals about the same time P’s stomach virus kicked in.

I don’t know which made me feel worse at the time. But I have a feeling which one might make me feel worse in twenty-four hours.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition what a way to make a living

I vowed that this week I’d be better about posting at least a few pictures of the items featured on Fashion Friday. But how was I to know that 9 to 5 would be on T.V. and I’d be completely taken in by Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin in what I believe to be one of the greatest movies of our generation?

There was no way of knowing.

But I’m not going to let it totally get in the way of Fashion Friday. Here are a few cute items I’ve seen this week:

    1. roll-up button-front tops

I saw this top at Old Navy yesterday and immediately bought one in white. And, get this, they really are on sale right now for just $15.00.

And they come in a bunch of colors.

And it will be the perfect thing when and if I ever feel hot again.

    2. printed button-down shirt

This was also at Old Navy and also on sale. I was so tempted to buy the blue gingham because I just knew it would look so crisp with a pair of white jeans and a cute wedge heel. But then I remembered that it gets really hot here and white jeans rarely fit into my lifestyle.

However, now that I’m looking at it again, I think I have to have it.

    3. striped long cardigan

    Y’all.

I have loved this cardigan ever since I first saw it. When I noticed it was on sale after Christmas, I put it in my shopping cart at Free People many, MANY times. But I couldn’t commit because I’d never seen it in person and didn’t know if I’d really like it.

And then Mimi and I went shopping on Tuesday and stopped in Free People on the off chance that they might have one left on the sale rack. They did. And it was only $49.99.

My procrastination and powers of indecisiveness have finally paid off.

    4. white ruffle bib henley

I am a sucker for a white shirt. A sucker.

    5. a new angle dress

I have a top that’s similar to this that I bought at Gap. I love it with leggings and my tall boots.

    6. studio mona coat

This is so completely unpractical and outrageously expensive (even on sale) unless you’re Audrey Hepburn. But, oh, it makes me want to be Audrey Hepburn for a day because LOVE.

    7. sochi sweater dress

I think this looks so comfortable and cute.

    8. button-front trench coat

Tim Gunn says that every woman needs a good trench coat in her closet and I tend to agree with him. It’s the perfect piece to throw on over a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and MAGICALLY you are totally polished and put together.

    9. red uptown elegance scarf

    I adore this scarf.

    10. un-cabled pullover

Maybe it’s because I’ve been cold all day and longing for a big, thick sweater, but this looks divine.

    That’s it.

    Y’all have a great Friday.

And don’t mix up your Skinny and Sweet with Rid ‘O Rat.
