  • The little black and white dress

For those of y’all who watch Project Runway, how glad were you that Laura won last night? Not only did I love her little dress, but I felt so bad for her because she was so down about last week. I mean this woman is pregnant with her 6th child. I have one child and have days where I can barely manage a coherent thought, so the fact that she is on this show coming up with brilliant designs amazes me. I’m not sure she’ll win the whole thing, because my money is still on Michael.

Loved Michael’s white dress and the judges are so right that he has a great eye for the whole look. It just “worked” as Tim would say.

Jeffrey’s outfit (and I use the term loosely) was as horrendous as his attitude. I don’t like Jeffrey. I don’t like the way he treats people and I am tired of his arrogant attitude. I took no small amount of pleasure in seeing him parade that truly hideous outfit down the runway. I knew Kayne was the one getting kicked off but I was glad Jeffrey was in the bottom two.

Poor Kayne. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. He will be great at designing pageant gowns in the South. I was sad to see him go though because he really was the best personality of the bunch.

Angela and Vincent. I knew they would both quickly be gone again once Heidi announced that they had to win to stay in the challenge. They did not disappoint.

And last but not least, Ulli. I think the judges are finally starting to tire of her silk printed flowy dresses. They really all look like different versions of the same dress. Maybe she figures that Diane Von Furstenburg built her career with the wrap dress, so she can build hers with the dressy caftan. We’ll see what happens, but I’m betting if she doesn’t come up with something different there is no way she’ll win.

So on that note, I’ll sign off. The casino episode of The Office is coming on and it’s a must see.

  • Get your fashion while it’s "haute"

Last week I had nothing to say about Project Runway, not because it was boring, but because I was apparently stunned into silence by the rosettes on the back of Angela’s silk capri pants. Angela had flashes of talent along the way, but in the end the rosettes did her in. Pun completely intentional.

Watching Project Runway this week, I learned one thing if nothing else. I do not pronounce haute couture properly. You can blame it on the fact that I never really have the need to use the term haute couture seeing as how it’s not something Gap or Banana Republic carries, in addition to the fact that I grew up in Southeast Texas. That “hot cocher” is some fancy stuff.

I was so glad to see Vincent go last night. He should have been gone long ago and if I had to spend one more week listening to what “turns him on”, I was going to be ready to turn PR off. I did crack up at him schmoozing Catherine Malandrino as if that was going to save him. “You’re fabulous, your shoes are fabulous, your dress is fabulous” and I kept waiting for him to tell her she turns him on, but it didn’t happen.

Although I don’t care for Jeffrey, his dress was the only one in my opinion, that truly looked like something you’d see on the runway. While bright yellow cotton plaid isn’t my first choice for an evening gown, it was edgy, fun and modern. I think the judges made the right call, but I so don’t want Jeffrey to win.

Michael’s dress was not great, but I think he should get an A for effort. At least he tried something new. To me, Uli designs the same dress every week but in different fabric. I know the judges liked her dress, but I am sick of those braidy things she has going on. Is it just me?

Kayne needs to stick around because he provides comedy. When they showed him in his beret last night with that drawn on mustache, I laughed out loud. But honestly, I think his talent is designing pageant gowns. He’s flamboyant and quite Elvis-y which doesn’t really translate to high fashion.

And poor Laura with her shirt tied up around her pregnant belly. She just looks miserable. I think she’s just trying to stay in the competition because no matter how stressful it is to be up all hours of the night designing and sewing, it’s got to be more peaceful than being at home with 5 kids and one on the way. Again, just my opinion and what do I know? I can’t even pronounce haute couture.

  • Continuing on with posts of a Cajun nature

Apparently today is Cajun day here at Big Mama’s. Y’all never know what you’re gonna get, do you?

I read a WFMW earlier that was about blogging and one piece of advice it gave was to stick to a theme on your blog, so for today I’m sticking to a theme. As for the rest of the time…y’all can just file me under miscellaneous.

A few weeks ago, my friend Hite discovered Big Mama. Actually, I had sent him an email with my “website” address (and website is in quotes because I’m not really sure that’s what it’s called. Thanks Boomama.) and I think he read one post and never came back again. Until, during his phone call to wish me Happy Birthday, I informed him that Big Mama updates her “website” everyday and I try to keep it mildly entertaining and filled with a variety of topics (try and do are two totally different things). I am proud to say that Hite has now made Big Mama his homepage.

So since Hite has mentioned that he’d love to read a story about some college adventures, I will oblige him. After all, he has made Big Mama his HOMEPAGE.

I haven’t been sure which anecdote to share and since I’m trying to be family friendly it has taken a while. But when I looked at the Aggie football schedule and realized we were playing the Ragin’ Cajuns, I knew I had a story.

Back in the fall of ’91, the Ragin’ Cajuns were coming to Kyle Field. This was back in the height of Aggie football glory so everyone knew that they didn’t have a prayer of beating us. It was a magical time.

The Monday before the game I was sitting in class avidly listening to the fascinating lecture on the ins and outs of Political Science and taking furious notes about libel being a tort…I’m totally kidding, I was reading The Battalion which is the student newspaper. Obviously I was an extremely conscientious student evidenced by the fact that when my dad came to visit, I pointed out the completely wrong building and told him it was the library. And because he loves me, he kept paying my tuition anyway.

So, I am reading The Batt when I notice an open letter to the student body from a professor named Dr. Abraham at USL, Home of the Ragin’ Cajuns. The letter was hysterical and I wish I had a copy, but basically it was an invitation for a select number of Aggie students to join him and some other Ragin’ Cajuns for a pre-game tailgate party complete with complimentary food and drink Cajun style. He said that the first twenty or so people to call him would be invited and he included his phone number.

I waited patiently until class was over…I’m kidding again. I left class immediately and sped home to tell my roommates and see if they were game. We called him and left a message saying that we had seen his letter and would love to join them for the tailgate party and by the way, we were Diamond Darlings for the baseball team. Gulley and I thought that fact might give us an edge and I am embarrassed to say that we probably said it with the importance reserved for statements like “I’m an ambassador to China and in my spare time I volunteer in orphanages”.

He called us back, said we were in and to show up Saturday on the George Bush Drive side of Kyle Field and bring our appetites. He wasn’t kidding.

We showed up at 11:00 a.m. and the beer and crawfish were already flowing. They had enough food to feed the entire stadium. Boudin, crawfish, sausage, and beer were plentiful. It was a true Cajun feast. They were the nicest group imaginable and we all had the best time sitting around listening to stories and telling them about Aggieland and all of our traditions. We drank beer, and more beer and then more beer because those crawfish were spicy and we were in college.

Y’all remember the college days when it was completely socially acceptable to drink beer at 11:00 in the morning? One little problem is that by a 2:00 pm kickoff, you might find yourself a little overserved.

Texas A&M is home of the 12th man tradition. The students stand the ENTIRE game to show our willingness to get in the game if needed. It’s a beautiful thing. But standing on an already wobbly metal bleacher after eating a ton of crawfish and being overserved and jumping up and down cheering for the Aggies…slightly unsettling. I’ll leave it at that.

I’ll always remember those Ragin’ Cajuns fondly. They weren’t much on the football field, but boy did they know how to throw a tailgate party.

  • Some may boast of prowess bold, of the school they think so grand…

Yesterday morning I walked outside and discovered that it felt a little like Fall. Not much, but a little. The breeze was out of the north and just slightly cooler and my whole body sighed with relief that the end of summer is near. And with the end of summer comes…College Football baby.

Specifically, my beloved Texas Aggies. They will open their season on Saturday against the Citadel at Kyle Field. Can I get a whoop, an amen and a Beat the Hell out of the Citadel?

My Aggies have had their share of challenges over the last few seasons. Coach Fran has not proven to be the end all be all that he was cracked up to be, but I have great hopes for this season and it mainly comes in the form of a young man named Stephen McGee. Here’s a quote from McGee, “I’d just say I love to compete. I hate to lose more than I like to win. That’s just me out there. I want to give it everything I have and do whatever it takes for us to be successful.”

Watching him play in our last game of the season against the Longhorns was like watching pure, raw, tough poetry in motion. He got hit, and then he got hit again, and then he got hit again and then…he got up and talked some trash. He looked at that defender and motioned for him to BRING IT ON and the sound you heard was legions of Aggies weeping maroon tears for the heart of this young man who does not quit.

Two days and counting until we kick this new season off and we’ll see which teams are all preseason hype and which teams are ready to play some football.

    Gig’em.

  • ABC is my new must see T.V.

ABC is running a new promo for the fall telling us to Feel Thursdays. Y’all I am feeling it because Thursday is the new night for Grey’s Anatomy this fall.

I can’t even watch the promo without wanting to cry at the sight of Izzie in her gorgeous, pink dress being carried by Alex after Denny died with that song by Snow Patrol playing in the background. Then when they show McDreamy looking at Meredith…gives me chills. Can I just say I love this show?

So if you’re looking for me on September 21st, don’t call during primetime. I’ll be feeling Thursdays.
