  • Fashion Friday: Edition it finally feels like fall

Late Tuesday night our coolest weather of the year blew in with a north wind. And when I woke up Wednesday it was not only cold, but rainy. I realize that if I lived in the Pacific Northwest this weather combo might not mean anything, but in South Texas it’s like a gift.

I wore a sweater. I wore my rainboots. And it was glorious.

Granted, it’s supposed to be 85 degrees again on Monday but right now I’m living in this moment. And I’ve bought two sweaters in the last three days because I’m full of anticipation for the weather that lies ahead.

Here are some things I’ve found this week that you may like. Or not. Either way is fine.

    1. tiered trapeze zip up

    10172013095559

I mentioned that I went to the large Free People store while I was in New York on Monday but I was waiting until today to show you what I bought.

    This zip up sweatshirt.

But not just any zip up sweatshirt. A tiered trapeze sweatshirt.

It was a splurge and I’m sad P is about to figure out it didn’t cost $15, but it might be the softest thing I’ve ever owned. I put it on first thing Wednesday morning with leggings and my rainboots and it was the happiest day ever.

This is one of those things I’ll wear for years.

    2. leopard flower scarf

    _8219472

Several of you asked about the leopard print scarf I was wearing in a picture earlier this week. The one I had on was from Francesca’s and I bought it last year. But I’ve had my eye on this one from Nordstrom. It comes in a few other colors, too.

And in case you don’t think you need one, look how cute it is in this outfit on Pinterest

    4b3f0daa3ab87cc99561835644e14279

If you just want a plain leopard print, I really like this Michael Kors infinity leopard scarf.

    _8330298

    3. madison leopard scarf

    cn7148166

But wait! There’s more! This one from Banana Republic is super cute with its hot pink accents and is 40% off with the code BR40SALE at checkout.

    4. brahmin kathleen shoulder bag

    _8381891

Before you fall in love with this bag, I must give the disclaimer that it is pricey. I never meant to see it. But then I searched “leopard” on the Nordstrom site while looking for scarf options and stumbled across it.

We were like two ships passing in the night. It was love at first sight.

    This bag is my density.

    5. basic cinched cardigan

    hw_2119_f_charcoal_copy

I have a cardigan thing that is very similar to this except I bought mine at TJ Maxx about four years ago. And it’s Adrienne Vittadini.

Remember Adrienne Vittadini? I used to swoon over all her cotton floral prints in college.

    6. ecote suede biker boot

    28080448_023_d

True confession. I bought these booties in August. And then I returned them because I decided I wanted a bootie with a heel.

But now I kind of regret it because I think these would be better for day to day wear. I love the whole motorcycle boot thing they have going on.

    7. mossimo engineer boot

    11197588_130513040000

Speaking of motorcycle boots, these are at Target. And they also come in black.

And they are almost perfect knock offs of the Frye Harness boots that are three times the price.

    8. gap legging cords

    cn6633342

I wore my wine colored cord leggings from Gap all over New York on Monday and it made me want them in every color. They are so comfortable that you wouldn’t even believe. And that’s after wearing them all over the streets of New York and during a four hour plane ride.

    9. foldover knit maxi skirt

    cn7150543

This skirt also comes in some other color combinations and solid black, but I’ve been looking for this combination ever since I saw this outfit on Pinterest a while back.

    ed969862cae7558282b63a60286fda5f

How cute is that? And I feel like the mustard is so unexpected, yet delightful.

    10. hooded aztec open sweater

    cn7205630

I’ve seen this in person and love it. Perfect to throw on with jeans and boots or over leggings with a long tee underneath.

    That’s it for today.

    Y’all have a good Friday.

  • Big Boo Cast: Episode Cloudy with a chance of nonsense

Caroline got out of school at noon yesterday because it’s teacher conference week. And so we went out for a girls’ lunch and to buy new jeans and, finally, went to go see Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs 2. I have to say it wasn’t my favorite but I do have to respect whoever came up with the concept of a taco-dile and a shrimpanzee.

Anyway, in the midst of this Sophie texted to see if I wanted to do a podcast and I said yes. As usual, we had no specific plan or topic in mind. I can’t even remember everything we talked about but I vaguely remember an entire discussion on my lack of a rug in the living room, our flights to New York, and Les Miles.

So, you know, all things that are obviously related.

You can click here to listen. Or here. Or, as always, you can subscribe on iTunes.

And here’s the video of Les Miles in case you’re interested.

  • Catching up

So it seems that I entirely missed that the dog in the picture from yesterday was wearing a foam finger that was making a questionable gesture. All I can offer in way of explanation is that’s how tired I was by the time I posted that picture and, also, I was entirely focused on the tennis shoes.

I finally walked in my door around midnight last night. And I headed straight for the shower because there is no way I could have crawled into bed with all the airport smell on me. You know? Airport smell? That combination of stale air and stranger germs?

Since everyone in my house was already asleep, I opted to use the guest bathroom because there was less chance of waking anyone up. Unfortunately I don’t keep a razor in the guest bathroom plus I’d forgotten to bring a razor to New York. And here’s something you may not know, I’m a little compulsive about shaving my legs every night. I cannot stand stubble.

So you can only imagine my angst at having to go to bed with two days worth of growth. I felt like a muppet.

And that might have been why I tossed and turned all night in spite of being exhausted. It didn’t help that I used my airplane ride to watch the first few episodes of Homeland and all that terrorist activity must have slipped into my subconscious because I had weird dreams that terrorists were after my maroon skinny cords from Gap.

Obviously this dream makes complete and total sense. It’s what I’ve quietly suspected all this time. That it’s all about the corduroy pants.

Needless to say, my Tuesday will not go down as one of my more productive days although I did manage to unpack my suitcase and throw in a few loads of laundry. I also made beef stroganoff in the crockpot because I maintain that nothing will make you feel as accomplished as having dinner taken care of by 9:00 a.m. And I went to the grocery store because the dogs probably needed something to eat besides a slice of cheese and, well, we all enjoy toilet paper.

But I didn’t even mention my weekend yet.

On Friday night I went to Women of Faith in San Antonio with my friend Michelle because she works for Women of Faith. And I found out about a really great event they’re doing in Houston on February 21-22 called Unwrap the Bible with Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer and a few others along with Kari Jobe leading worship. You can find out more about it here, but I think it sounds amazing.

And then on Saturday I slept in because Caroline didn’t have a soccer game until 2:00. I cannot express how much I love the afternoon soccer game, except that it didn’t feel like an October day as much as a July day.

Saturday night we went over to Gulley’s to watch the Ags play Mississippi. And I died a thousand deaths between 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. At one point I put my head between my knees and began to take deep breaths and P had to tell me to get a hold of myself.

And then Lambo kicked that field goal.

I really need the Aggies to start winning more decisively so I can relax a little more on Saturday nights. As it stood I was so wired by the time that game was over that I barely slept at all before leaving my house at 7:00 a.m. Sunday to catch my flight to New York.

Which explains why I’m going to quit boring you with mundane things like my need to have shaved legs and head to bed. I have some sleep to catch up on.

  • Boy the way Glen Miller played

Well I took the day off yesterday to celebrate Columbus Day in style because I feel like it’s what Columbus would have wanted. Especially after Caroline declared a few weeks ago that Queen Isabella of Spain couldn’t have been that popular since she’d never heard of her.

And so I spent the day in New York City watching the Columbus Day Parade on 5th Avenue. Except that’s not really true because this is all I saw of the parade.

    photo 1

That’s the end in case you can’t tell.

But I also saw this dog wearing a Yankees cap and tennis shoes so it’s not like the experience was a total loss because A DOG IN WEE TENNIS SHOES.

    photo 2

If there was ever a day I was going to quit blogging forever this would be it because what else can I do now that I’ve given you the gift of dog tennis shoes?

In truth I wasn’t in New York to celebrate Columbus Day. It just worked out that way.

Several months ago, our editors at Tyndale emailed Sophie and me to let us know that Jane from Barnes and Noble wanted us to come to New York for lunch. Of course I said yes because that’s slightly more exciting than my normal lunches that usually involve whatever cheese I have that hasn’t gone bad and some Triscuits. Sometimes I’ll have a side of grapes if I’m feeling fancy.

We made all the arrangements and Sophie and I flew into New York on Sunday afternoon. She flew into La Guardia, but I flew into JFK. And, thus, she was spared the sight of me fighting carsickness in the back of a very erratic cab on my drive into the city. It caused me to have flashbacks to the bus in Ecuador when I threw up in front of Ann Voskamp. I had to totally mind over matter myself while taking deep, cleansing breaths to avoid having to pay a $50 cleanup fee for getting sick in a cab.

On Sunday night we walked through Times Square and enjoyed fall weather that actually feels like fall as we made our way to an incredible Italian restaurant called Morandi. I had the pasta with bolognese. Not that you really care about that detail but that’s what I eat in New York. All pasta, all the time. It’s important to carb load for all the walking.

Sadly, Monday morning I awoke to what was apparently an overzealous door closer staying next to me in the hotel. Because if they closed their door once at 6:45 a.m., they closed it seventeen times. Over and over again. Part of me really wanted to go out in the hall and lecture them about hotel etiquette, but I remembered I was in a very large city and that’s how people end up being the subject of a “ripped from the headlines!” episode of Law & Order.

But then I fell back asleep and Sophie brought me some Starbucks later in the morning and it redeemed the beginning of the day. We walked from our hotel near Times Square to Craftbar down on Broadway. That’s where we met Jane and she was just as delightful as I hoped she’d be. We talked about books and Texas and New York and television. So it was pretty much the perfect lunch. And I haven’t even told y’all about the cheese plate yet.

It was a top three cheese plate of my life moment.

And the best part is we didn’t have plans to order the cheese plate. It just showed up and we’d dug in before the waitress told us she’d made a mistake. But there was no turning back because you don’t get between women and their cheese.

This is Sophie and me with Jane. I know it looks like I have spoons in each hand ready to eat that dessert but I assure you only one of those hands belongs to me.

    photo

After lunch we took a cab back to Rockefeller Center. We looked at the ice skating rink, went in the MOMA store and the NBC store. And then. AND THEN. We went in the biggest Free People store I have ever been in. Like it had ALL the Free People merchandise. I could have stayed in there forever. I could have tried on various clothes forever. But we all had flights to catch.

So we went to grab our suitcases from where we’d stored them at the hotel and get cabs. Sophie and Carol from Tyndale were both heading to La Guardia, but I had to go back to JFK and, frankly, I was dreading the cab ride with all my being.

But then the bellhop at the hotel said there was a town car heading to JFK for the same price as a cab and I felt the heavens open and angels began to sing. I jumped in that car so fast it would make your head spin and had a wonderful ride to JFK driven by my new friend Miguel who is originally from the Dominican Republic and the second oldest of thirty-five kids.

    Thirty-five kids.

Let that sink in for a moment.

I felt like Miguel and I understood each other when he immediately told me how to turn down the A/C when I got in the car. But I knew it for sure when he turned on what was obviously some kind of 80’s Greatest Hits music for us to listen to on our way to the airport and asked me if I enjoy the music of Lionel Richie.

Umm. Who doesn’t? Not anybody I’d want to know.

But the best was when we made a shortcut to the airport to avoid some traffic and wound our way through a neighborhood in Queens and I asked if we were close to Archie Bunker’s house and Miguel totally acted like he got my antiquated pop culture reference. I appreciate that in a person.

Now I’m sitting in JFK waiting for my flight. I’m supposed to get home at midnight tonight so I’m sure I’ll spend tomorrow feeling as fresh as a daisy. Assuming you’re thinking of a daisy that has been run over by the lawnmower. Twice.

And just to make you laugh, here’s the official logo from our trip to the Big City provided by the folks at Tyndale who never fail to have a sense of humor.

Is it just me or has the Statue of Liberty never looked better?

  • Fashion Friday: Edition I’m so happy it’s Friday

Well I almost thought I wasn’t going to have time to write this tonight because I had so much homework to get done.

But the fashion prevailed and that’s good because I found some cute things.

Including the softest hoodie ever. Which is great because ’tis the season for a good hoodie.

Amy from Evy’s Tree sent me two darling hoodies a few weeks ago and I can’t wait for the weather to cool off for real so I can wear them every waking minute.

    This is the Lizzy.

    lizzy_web

And this is the Cabaret Simple.

    _RDS2766

They are equally cute and equally soft. And there are more styles to choose from, including hoodies for kids.

Best of all, you can get 15% off your order when you use the code BIGMAMA15 at checkout.

Listen. Free People can make a good top. I really, really like this one even though it’s a little pricey.

    2. cable poncho

Last year I had big plans to buy a cable poncho from Gap. But I wanted to wait until they were on sale and then they were all sold out in my size. You can imagine the horror.

Don’t let it happen to you. Gap is offering 35% off through Monday when you use the code GAPSAIL at checkout. God bless Christopher Columbus for discovering the New World.

    3. drama open knit cabled sweater

    _8388580

I seem to be on a sweater kick.

    4. saipan zigzag tunic dress

    Y’all have a good Friday.

  • Will someone please think of the balloon poodles?

Last night I was sitting on the couch playing Candy Crush and trying to come up with something to write about. This is basically the Cliffs Notes version of every night of my life. But then I started looking at Facebook and noticed several of my friends mentioning they’ve received the renewal notices from their health insurers and the common thread is that their monthly premiums have almost doubled for the same level of coverage.

And this sent me into a little bit of a tailspin of worry because P and I are both self-employed. We already pay quite a bit for health insurance and I’m really not looking forward to that number doubling. At some point you have to think we’re better off just taking the hit and using the money we’re saving on insurance premiums to stock up on Band-Aids and a few tubes of Neosporin.

On a related note, I just read an article that said the NINETY-THREE MILLION DOLLAR website developed for people to sign up for Obamacare is expected to have months of glitches. I verified this earlier when I went on to act like I was going to create an account and all I got was a bunch of gibberish computer code.

So. Let me get this straight. You want to be in charge of my healthcare but you can’t build a reliable website for the bargain price of NINETY-THREE MILLION DOLLARS?

    That sounds totally reasonable.

    And not at all frightening.

Anyway, the point is I went to bed and tossed and turned because I was worried about our insurance premiums. Which led to being worried about paying for Caroline’s college. Which led to worrying about the science crossword puzzle she had for homework because we barely knew any of the answers. Which led to thinking the sleeves on my pajama top were too scratchy. And, thus, I was up most of the night. Welcome to the state of my brain.

In the morning, the first words out of Caroline’s mouth were to remind me that I said we could run to HEB to buy flowers for her to take to her teacher from last year for her birthday. So we rushed through our morning routine to ensure we had time to go get flowers and make it to school within reasonable range of the ringing of the tardy bell.

However, we arrived at HEB and Caroline found the flower section overwhelming. Lilies? Gerbera daisies? Roses? An orchid? I implored her to make up her mind quickly and walked over to the edge of the flower section to take deep, calming breaths. It was then that I noticed a sign on the helium machine next to all the balloons.

It read: WE CAN NO LONGER FILL UP BALLOONS DUE TO THE WORLDWIDE HELIUM SHORTAGE.

    Well. I had no idea.

As if I didn’t have enough on my mind. Now I have to worry about the clowns.

Because I yearn for knowledge on any crisis that may lead to lame balloon-less parties, I immediately consulted the internet as soon as I got home. I discovered many things. Most importantly, the worldwide helium shortage is a real thing and balloon artists are having to resort to using wooden sticks to hold up their creations.

Now I’ll never sleep again for thinking about some poor clown having to make a balloon poodle look lifelike and interesting using only his mind and some wooden sticks.

But, more importantly, the U.S. Government is in charge of one-third of the world’s helium supply.

    Of course it is.

With all the things Congress cannot agree on, they managed to reach an agreement about the helium a couple of weeks ago. I assume because a shutdown of the Federal Helium Program would result in lost revenue to the U.S. Treasury averaging $430,000 a day. And then how would they pay for that healthcare website?

Also, we have a Federal Helium Program.

We have a Federal Helium Program.

Now the President just needs to sign the bill so it becomes a law. Otherwise, none of us will ever be able to talk in funny voices at a party ever again.

Helium is also used in a wide variety of things like the aerospace industry, MRI machines, and fiber optics.

And I guess those things are important, too.
