  • Fashion Friday: Edition Happy Father’s Day!

We’ve had a busy few weeks around here but I’m so happy that we’re all back in the same house and have some time to just enjoy some summer. We haven’t even been to the pool yet. But I plan for all that to change over the next few days.

I hope you all have a great Father’s Day weekend, even though there is nothing on this list that you can buy your dad. I mean, you could buy it for him but I don’t think he’d want it. However, I did write an original piece about Father’s Day over at TODAY.com on their parenting site called Father’s Day: The Real Heroes Don’t Wear Capes and you can read it here.

And here are some cute things I found this week:

    1. gingham flutter top

This darling top is on sale for $39.95 plus all sale at Anthro is an extra 25% off with no code needed at checkout. It also comes in a light mint green, but I really love the orange because it would make a great transition to fall. Not that I can really even think about fall right now because it is a million degrees here.

    2. raw edge v-neck tee

I love a good v-neck tee because I think they are so much more flattering than a round neck tee. This one is only $17 and comes in several color options. Never underestimate the usefulness of a good t-shirt in the summertime.

    3. ivy patchwork dress

This is another Anthro sale item. It’s $69.95 plus 25% off. I have a couple of Anthro dresses that I’ve bought on sale during the summer and I wear them over and over again.

    4. tiered crochet pants

These wide-legged pants are only $10 and come in mocha, coral and taupe. I think they would be great to just wear around the house, throw on over a swimsuit, or wear with one of the v-neck t-shirts above with sandals. They are final sale so keep that in mind but TEN DOLLARS.

    5. tie back stripe dress

I saw this tie back stripe dress and thought it was so cute.

And then I saw this tie back sleeveless top and loved it, too.

And then I saw this striped tie back shell at Loft and realized tie-back must be a thing right now. I love all these options depending on what your closet needs.

Loft is offering 40% off everything with the code NEWNOW at checkout.

    6. nike air zoom pegasus 34 running shoes

These come in several color options but I am in love with these. I have a similar pair but they are just solid blue and now I feel like I need these in my life.

    7. chambray embroidered flutter top

I think this is the cutest top and would look so great with white shorts or jeans. It’s 40% off with code NEWNOW at checkout.

    8. gap eyelet flutter top

Gap has some great white tops and pants right now. And everything is 40% off with code HAPPY at checkout.

I really like these gap high rise wide leg jeans

And this gap ruffle sleeve boatneck top

    9. j.crew factory striped tunic

This would be a perfect coverup over a swimsuit or as a tunic over some white jeans. I love the light blue and I love the stripes.

    10. cap sleeve frill trim embroidery dress

So a few weeks ago I featured a skirt from SheIn and I realized I’d never actually ordered anything from them. I ordered the skirt and it came in earlier this week and I have to say I’m happy with it. The shipping takes a little longer than most places, but the quality is pretty good considering the prices and the sizes seem to run true. I’ll definitely order from the again, maybe starting with this cute dress. It’s only $27 and also comes in a pink stripe.

    That’s it for today.

Have a great Friday and Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads who aren’t reading this. So, essentially, Happy Father’s Day to my dad because he is a faithful Big Mama reader which is one of many reasons I love him.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition if you like pina coladas and dresses

I really didn’t mean to go the whole week without posting anything but Caroline and I were in Nashville all week and just got home late Thursday night. I plan to make up for all of my non-writing with lots of writing next week to document the last week of my life. Here’s the short version: I’ve slept in my own bed one night.

But I had some time to kill at the Nashville airport and found some cute things you might be interested in, particularly dresses.

    1. gingham off the shoulder dress

I have loved this ever since I first saw it and now it’s on sale for $99.95.

    2. vans old skool sneakers

I have these in white and they are so comfortable that I basically wear them everywhere these days. I happen to love this light gray version, too.

And I also love these nike juvenate sneakers if you want something a little more athletic.

    3. elira striped dress

This dress is so much cuter in person and can easily be dressed up or down. It’s on sale for $99.95.

    4. old navy shift dress

A friend of mine was asking me about summer dresses yesterday and I told her you basically can’t beat Old Navy for inexpensive, casual summer dresses. They always have a good selection.

    5. love stitch floral print maxi

Caroline and I went in a boutique in Franklin this week and they had a lot of different things that were the Love Stitch brand. Everything was super cute and pretty reasonably priced. I happen to love this floral print maxi dress.

    6. old navy embroidered trim dress

See? Here’s another cute dress from Old Navy. It also comes in black and white, but I really like the bright color for summer.

    7. briggs top

I think this striped top is so cute and would look great with jeans or shorts and is perfect for the 4th of July.

    8. embroidered trapeze dress

I was looking around on Nordstrom and found this really pretty dress. Love the embroidery.

    9. embroidered shift dress

And that led me to this one which I think is so cute.

    10. ali wedge sandal

I’ve had my eye on these wedges since early spring. They come in a bunch of color options, the tassel is really fun, they have great reviews and they are now 25% off and $74.96. I like that they are suede because you can wear them now and to transition into the fall.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition the first weekend of summer

It is summer and I had a full day of celebrating the end of school and it’s late now, so this will be brief.

Here are some cute things I found this week:

    1. bow tie waist layered ruffle skirt

This skirt is adorable. I immediately ordered it for myself. Best of all? It’s just $24.

    2. pleione mixed media top

I think this is a great basic top for summer. I happen to really like it in the white, but it comes in other colors.

    3. skirted top

Anthropologie has a bunch of cute tops on sale right now for less than $50. This one is $49.95 and I really like it. Gingham is such a thing right now.

    4. dayla tie-front tunic

This tie-front tunic is so versatile and it’s just $39.95. I am such a fan of the tie in front because it just adds a little something extra.

    5. vintage modern tank

This tank comes in several different colors and I love that it has straps that are wide enough to wear with a normal bra. It also has great reviews and is on sale for $28. It’s great by itself or as a layering piece.

    6. frontal hoop earrings

I really like these earrings because they’re like a normal hoop but better. They also come in silver and are 50% off so just $17.49.

    7. quay cherry bomb sunglasses

I have discovered Quay sunglasses and think they are so cute. Plus, they are priced at a very reasonable price point. There are several cute styles to choose from but I think these are my favorite. At least for today.

    8. j.crew plaid gauze shirt

This shirt comes in several different pattern and color options, but I am partial to this hot pink gingham. It just feels super summer-ish to me.

    9. old navy jersey swing dress

The swing dresses are the best. I’ve discovered that a lightweight dress is an excellent alternative to shorts in the summer and these are a great price and easy to wear.

    10. embroidered tassel tie neck blouse

I cannot resist an embroidered blouse.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition happy memorial day weekend

It’s hard to believe that it’s Memorial Day weekend. But here we are and I’m sure for many of you this is your kick off to summer the way God intended it to be before state legislators decided we needed a certain amount of school hours no matter what makes sense.

As for us, we will celebrate Memorial Day with a soccer tournament, studying for final exams and maybe a little pool time on Monday if it all works out.

Here are a few things I found this week. Please keep in mind that there are plenty of great Memorial Day sales to be found.

    1. j.crew embroidered dress

I saw this earlier this week and it was love at first sight. This is maybe the perfect summer dress. It also comes in white and in the form of an embroidered linen-cotton top if a dress isn’t your thing.

    2. gap drapey eyelet tank

Speaking of tops, I look at this one every time I walk in Gap and I’m not sure why I haven’t bought it yet. It also comes in black and I think it’s so cute.

    3. seaglass bib necklace

This is a perfect statement necklace for summer and will go with just about anything. It can dress up anything from a white t-shirt to a little black dress and it’s 40% off and now $40.80.

Nordstrom is in the midst of one of their half-yearly sales so there are tons of good things to be found.

    4. j.crew embroidered floral dress

This is another great J.Crew dress for summer. I happen to love this bright yellow, but it also comes in a gorgeous blue if that’s more your style.

    5. franco sarto sandals

I bought these sandals two summers ago and I still wear them all the time. In fact, I think I love them even more now. They go with everything and they are super comfortable. They come in other colors, too.

    6. gap stripe v-neck t-shirt dress

I ran into Gap and ended up walking out with this striped dress. It was 50% off and I might wear it at least once a week. It’s hard to go wrong with stripes. It also comes in a navy and white stripe option.

    7. in the meadow top

Free People has a dress/top that is super similar to this and about three times the price. I think this one is just as cute and will look great with shorts and jeans.

    8. blank nyc skinny jeans

If you need a good pair of jeans for summer, I happen to like Blank NYC jeans for the price. These are 40% off and now $52.80.

    9. wide leg marina pants

I have had my eye on these for a while and they are finally on sale. I love the chambray color and the wide leg. Almost everything at Ann Taylor is 40% off with code SUMMER at checkout.

    10. surf gypsy cover up tunic

    How cute is this coverup?

I’d seen this parker beach lagoon cover up and fallen in love with it, but it’s pricey even on sale. I think the surf gypsy one is equally cute.

    11. farina embroidered blouse

Anthropologie is offering an extra 40% off everything on sale. This darling top is $59.95 plus an extra 40% off which means it’s almost free. I love the red and white for summer and it would transition well into fall, too.

    12. abalone silk dress

I think this dress is so pretty and sizes are limited. It’s perfect for a summer wedding. It’s on sale for $49.95 plus an extra 40% off.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition when May is about to kill you, go shopping

    Dear May,

    I am over you.

    With Zero Love,
    Melanie

But at least we have online shopping to help us make it through.

First things first, The Ikat Elephant is having a big sale. You can get 25% off your entire purchase with the code SPRINGSAVE25 at checkout.

Personally, I’ve had my eye on this jillian printed maxi dress but there are tons of other cute things so you should go check it out.

Here are some other things I found this week:

    1. bp twist front tee

This is a great tee to wear with skirts, shorts and jeans this summer. The twist front makes it more flattering than just a normal tee. And it’s only $22 and comes in several color options.

    2. nadiya caftan

I love the bright yellow color. This would be great layered over skinny white jeans or as a swimsuit coverup.

    3. bathing beauty one piece swimsuit

Speaking of swimwear, swimsuits are 30% off at Modcloth now through Sunday, the 21st. I really like the retro style of this one, it has great reviews and comes in several color options and plus sizes.

    4. crew neck tunic sweatshirt

Remember this tunic sweatshirt from last week? It’s now on sale for $59.95 which is probably a sign that you need it. Or that you need two if you already ordered one.

    5. gap leather flip flops

These Gap flip flops are a summer staple for me every year. I always get a pair in gold because it goes with everything. They also come in a cognac color if that’s more your style. Either way, it’s a great inexpensive shoe option for summer.

    6. high low jersey cardigan

If you are like me you might find yourself with a chill when them temperature dips below 70 degrees. Unfortunately, this seems to happen in every restaurant in Texas once summer hits and I freeze, so I’m always looking for a good light-weight option to throw on over a dress or a top. I love this in the stripes because it would be perfect with all white under it, but it also comes in some great solid colors.

    7. AG legging ankle jeans

Neiman Marcus Last Call is a great place to find good deals on jeans. I discovered this last year and it is a game changer. These AG legging ankle jeans are on sale for $111.30 and are normally $235. AG jeans, in my opinion, are the greatest of all the jeans because they never bag out at the knees and fit like a glove.

And listen to me now and believe me later, but flare jeans are making a big comeback and I am personally thrilled to see it happen. I love these marrakech flare leg jeans that are just $67 and normally $255.

If you want a white pair, these DL1961 premium denim flares are great and are on sale for $69.30 and normally $178.

You should also go read my friend Carly’s post about how to nail the flare jean look because it is spot on. The hem is everything.

    8. floral embroidered flounce dress

Loft has some really cute dresses right now. And I bet they’re about to have a sale because they always have a sale.

I also love this tapestry flounce dress.

And this floral mosaic sleeveless swing dress is so bright and colorful. Perfect for summer and would look great with the gold flip flops from Gap.

    9. embroidered vintage swing tee

This tee is just $20 and it’s one of those super easy pieces to wear with shorts or jeans all summer long.

    10. gap dream well sleep dress

Gap is calling this a sleep dress, but I honestly think it could be a great tunic top or a swimsuit coverup. It’s too cute to just be relegated to the role of sleep dress.

But if you just want a super soft nightshirt, then this gap graphic sleep dress is divine. Gulley and I have long lamented the lack of good, soft sleep shirts available these days.

And these gap crop sleep pants are also perfect for lounging around the house or throwing on over your swimsuit at the pool.

    11. lace up tassel faux leather bag

I didn’t mean to fall into a handbag hole, but I got an email from Nordstrom and saw this cute white bag is now 40% off and just $41.40.

Which led me to discover this frye cara leather hobo bag that is super dreamy. It’s 30% and still $266.66 but it’s normally $398 so you are basically making money if you buy it.

And this madewell suede transport tote is 30% which almost never happens. You would love yourself in the fall if you had the foresight to buy this suede bag now. It’s $124.99.

    12. sam edelman geri sandals

And, finally, these cute embroidered sandals are 30% off and now $62.90. I love the lace up detail.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition happy mother’s day and a giveaway!

So I’ll start with this because I’m kind of excited about it. I wrote my first original piece for TODAY.com and it went up yesterday. You can read it here. And they tell me that it’s good to get votes (Why? I don’t know. What does it all mean?) but there’s a little thing at the top of the article where you can vote for me so it would be great if you could do that if you feel so inclined. The article is about what it means to be a good mother so, in keeping with that, I wish all of you who are moms or who have a mom a very happy mother’s day.

Secondly, I have a great giveaway today courtesy of Milk and Honey Tees. Earlier this week I shared the “Chin Up, America!” tee and y’all ordered it like crazy which was so fun. In fact, you ordered so many of them that they have sold out for now but should have more available in the next week or so and so, you know, CHIN UP.

But Milk and Honey Tees also have several other cute t-shirt options.

That last one is basically my life motto.

Today, Milk and Honey Tees is giving away TWO $50 gift certificates to two of you today. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post for a chance to win. No duplicate comments, please. I’ll leave comments open until Sunday and then pick two winners at random!

Now for some cute things I’ve found this week that you could buy yourself for Mother’s Day:

    1. crew neck tunic sweatshirt

At the very heart of me, I really would just wear some form of loungewear all the time. I am a sucker for a good oversized sweatshirt and this one has amazing reviews. It comes in blue, sand, navy and moss and you can crank down the A/C and wear it now and then keep wearing it all next winter.

The reviews do say that it is lightweight so it might be perfect for those of you who have northern summers. As for us Texas girls, we can’t have any material touching our arms during the summer months if we’re outdoors.

    2. exhilaration long sleeve babydoll dress

Isn’t this so cute? It also comes in black and it’s just $29.99. Plus all dresses are buy one, get one 50% off at Target right now.

Which means you could also get this embroidered yoke shift dress.

    3. georgette poncho

The reviews say this is more of a tunic than a poncho but I don’t hate it either way. I love the colors and I love a good tunic/poncho.

    4. embroidered pom pom tunic

These embroidered pom pom tunics from J.Crew make the cutest coverups or even tops over skinny jeans. They come in different colors but I am loving this bright coral with navy accents.

    5. schütz fankia wedge sandals

Every now and then something pops up as I’m looking online and I know – like you know a good melon -that I have to have it and that it will bring me lasting joy and happiness. That’s how I felt about these cork wedge sandals. They are perfection and so versatile.

They also come in black and clay and are normally $200 but just $44.99. I DIE.

    6. bell sleeve tie front top

In what can only be an indicator that you are who you are, I have always loved a top that ties at the waist. My 90s college self was certain that trend would never die and then, alas, it did. But it appears to be back and if loving it is wrong then I don’t want to be right. This top is all that I want out of a top.

It also comes in a white striped option and a solid black.

    7. back cut out t-shirt dress

The cut out on this dress gives it a little pizazz. It comes in several color and striped options and would be great dressed up with those cork wedge sandals above or dressed down with some cute sneakers.

    8. birkenstock arizona slide sandals

Listen. I can’t make all of you order a pair of what we call Birkencrocs at my house, but I would if I could. They are the perfect summer shoe for the pool or the lake or the beach or just life. You can hose them off if they get dirty. They are indestructible. And I adore them. Plus they are just $34.95.

    9. crochet cut out top

This would look so great with just a pair of denim shorts and sandals.

    10. gap denim shorts

Speaking of denim shorts, I love these. They are very similar to a pair I bought at Gap about four years ago and wear constantly.

And, good news! If you’re looking for a longer option, gap bermuda denim shorts are making a comeback. These were a staple for me in college along with aforementioned shirt that tied at the waist.

    That’s it for today.

Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win one of the gift cards to Milk and Honey tees.

    Have a good Friday.
