  • The gift guide for men, 2017 edition

I was planning on doing an all-new list this year but the truth is this list doesn’t change much. I asked P if he would add or delete anything and he said this pretty much sums it up. So I present the 2017 gift guide that really isn’t any different from the 2016 gift guide.

Maybe something great will come up between now and December 2018 so I can shake it up a bit next year.

    1. under armour fish hunter shirt

This is P’s favorite fishing shirt and he’s tried them all. This is the newest version of this shirt and he’s a big fan.

    2. L.A. police gear operator L2 lumens flashlight

While he still loves Surefire flashlights, he discovered this more affordable flashlight option this year. He says he can’t totally vouch for its long-term durability and “wouldn’t take it into a war” (Well, who would?) but it works really well outside of war zone situations apparently.

    3. surefire titan led keychain flashlight

This is one of his favorites because it’s just a good, small flashlight that you can carry around for everyday use. He even carries it in his suit pocket when he is required to be dressed up.

Maybe I should get one to help me find my car keys that always find their way to the bottom of my purse.

    4. mad bomber rabbit fur hat

    For the fashion forward man.

    5. outdoor edge swing blade outdoor edge knife

I bet P owns 456 knives, many of which he’s had since childhood. He likes this knife but also recommends this Columbia river knife and tool m16 which is what he carries everyday.

Because, you know, everyone needs an everyday knife to go with their everyday flashlight.

    6. worx 5 amp electric jawsaw

A friend told me about this and I nearly ordered one for P, but then I consulted Caroline and she gave it a big “NO” because she says he wouldn’t use it. I’m taking her word for it, but this sure seems like a more exciting gift option than flannel pajama bottoms. Just looking at it makes me want to go cut some stuff up.

    5. north face backpack

A backpack is always a good option for an outdoorsman because they require a lot of gear. You know, flashlights and snacks and whatnot.

    6. princeton tec fuel headlamp

You don’t even want to know how many headlamps we have at our house. I will tell you it’s more than the number of heads who live here.

Also, Caroline went on a Young Life retreat a few weeks ago and P told her to pack a headlamp “just in case”. After she got home, I was helping her unpack and asked if she’d taken a headlamp. She looked at me and said, “No way. You think I want to be the kid on the Young Life retreat wearing a headlamp?” In some ways, she is very much her mother’s daughter.

    7. warthog knife sharpener

Okay, I have to say this is the best knife sharpener ever. We’ve had ours for years and we use it to sharpen all our knives.

    8. smartwool socks

We love our Smartwool socks around here. They aren’t cheap but they keep your feet warm and dry. Perfect for everyday use or hiking or hunting or shopping.

    9. north face soft shell jacket

I bought P this jacket during the Nordstrom sale this year because he was in desperate need of a good jacket and this one is about all the jacket you need to get you through the harsh South Texas winters. He is super picky and loves this jacket.

    10. GoPro camera

P doesn’t have one of these. I actually bought him one for Father’s Day and he told me he’d never use it (kind of like a jawsaw, I guess) so I took it back. But Gulley’s husband has one and uses it all the time to record hunting trips, sporting events, fishing trips, etc. I always think it’s really cool. Maybe I’ll get myself one along with that saw and make videos of all the stuff I’m going to cut up.

    11. fishing buff

Every now and then I’ll post a pic of P from a fishing trip and someone will invariably ask if he’s wearing a scarf. The answer to that question is always no.

This is what he wears. He wears them hunting, fishing, and pretty much any time he is outdoors because he has a lot of sun damage on his neck and this protects it, but doesn’t make you feel hot because it’s super lightweight, breathable material. They also make them in merino wool for cold weather.

    12. klean kanteen insulated beverage bottle

I nearly called this a water bottle, but P corrected me and it’s a BEVERAGE bottle. And I have to say that it is the best beverage bottle ever. It truly keeps hot things hot and cold things cold for a long time. I used to send Caroline to school with one last year and by the end of the day it still had ice cubes that hadn’t melted.

Although my yeti rambler tumbler gives it a run for its money. I love my yeti and it keeps my coffee so hot that I have to take the lid off for it to cool down before I can drink it. It’s my best friend at early morning soccer games.

    13. digiscoping adaptor with monocular for smart phone

One of my friends sent this gift idea to me because she saw that her husband had ordered it for himself and thought it might be a good gift idea for P. And it totally would be if he hadn’t already bought one for himself.

    14. man crates

A reader emailed and told me about this site and it’s pretty cool. They have all kinds of wooden crates filled with various man things depending on your guy’s interests. Hunting, fishing, cooking, etc. It’s a great concept and fun gift idea.

    15. taotronics bluetooth headphones

This falls in the saw and GoPro category of things P would never use. But a lot of guys would think these are great for when they’re working out or doing yard work or trying not to listen to you talk about how great it would be to redo your entire kitchen because they know it will lead to you looking for marinara sauce under the bunk bed in the playroom.

  • A gift guide for the teen girl

Several of you have asked if I was going to do this again this year and I totally wasn’t. I didn’t feel like I had any good suggestions or thoughts, but then I liberated myself and decided to not send out a Christmas card this year and now I feel free enough to perhaps offer some help as you shop for the teen girl in your life.

This is by no means a comprehensive list because there is not a teen girl who exists who isn’t likely to change her mind or her style or what she wants most for Christmas on Christmas Eve.

But here you go. I tried to vary price points and those kinds of things. And feel free to leave any other great suggestions that may save us all as we shop.

    1. viviana sweater

If I have learned anything this year from sitting in the carpool line at the high school, it’s that oversized sweaters and sweatshirts are back. If they aren’t oversized then they need to be cropped.

I’ve also learned that high waisted jeans are seriously making a comeback and I don’t understand why they youth of America didn’t learn from our Mom butt sins of the past.

And, finally, I’ve learned that teenagers will walk right behind or in front of your car and just assume you will see them and stop and they won’t get run over.

This sweater is super soft and cute and oversized. It also comes in pink or navy.

    2. stub hub gift card

Gulley’s sister got this for the boys last year I think and it’s a great idea. They can use it for a sporting event or concert and they can pick when and who and where and all of that business. Personally, I’d use it to go see Taylor Swift in Houston next fall.

    3. facial mask sampler kit

This is just one of many various face mask assortments. We are all about a face mask at our house. We like a charcoal face mask, a peel off face mask, and a hydrating face mask. Target had several different face mask gift sets in their beauty aisle. This makes a great gift or stocking stuffer.

    4. mini cinema light box

This is super cute and fun for their bedroom. You could also just do one of those letter boards, too. I saw several of them on Amazon here.

    5. she reads truth bible

This is a great Bible for a teen girl because it’s pretty and it is full of interesting facts and historical backstory information. It comes in several color options, including a faux leather and a real leather.

    6. paper mate flair pens

Listen. I’d still be excited about a pack of colored pens.

    7. hooded jumpsuit

Why, yes, this is a bunny onesie. I saw it in Nordstrom this weekend and can attest that it is super soft and cozy. There is also a raccoon option in case that seems more her style. I bought Caroline a onesie last Christmas and she wears it around the house all the time. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

    8. altar’d state warm up robe

This is a really cute little robe with a super soft fleece inside.

    9. free people ring box gift set

I saw these rings in Free People this weekend. It’s just $28 for this box of three and they are one size fits all.

    10. alternative classic pullover hoodie

By showing you this hoodie, I am really suggesting any hoodie or sweatshirt in general. I would err on the side of it being an oversize fit, but it could be an Adidas hoodie, a Nike hoodie or a sweatshirt from Yellowstone Park or wherever. I just know a good sweatshirt is a girl’s best friend or something like that.

And you could also opt for a pair of good vibes jogger pants. Or really any kind of jogger or pj pant.

    11. bluetooth earbuds

There are different versions of these at various price points, but Caroline loves these when she’s working out or kicking her soccer ball in the backyard.

    12. vans old skool sneakers

I realize tennis shoes can be a tricky proposition if you don’t know someone’s shoe size, but these might be a good option if you know a girl who might appreciate some cute sneakers.

And so that’s the end of my suggestions, but Caroline says you also can’t go wrong with a gift card to Lululemon, Kendra Scott, or Amazon.

    Happy shopping!

  • The Big Boo Cast, Episode 89

We recorded this the week of Thanksgiving. It was before we knew that both of our schools would soon be in the midst of a coaching search or that Harry and Meghan were about to be engaged. It was a simpler time.

But we did get to have our friend and talented musician, Dave Barnes, on this episode. In our typical professional way, Sophie accidentally forgot to hit record for the first little bit of our conversation so when you start this one just try to pretend you’re at a dinner party and showed up just a little late to the topic. It’ll all come together soon enough.

And this one is a good one. Dave Barnes talks a lot about the creative process and what it means to put yourself out there. There’s a lot of wisdom that has stayed with me from this one.

We’d love for you to subscribe on iTunes, and we’d be honored if you’d leave us a review.

You can click here to listen. Or here. You can even listen right here on the blog.

You can also listen on Stitcher.

And if you’re on the Facebook, well, we are, too.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition it’s snowing in San Antonio

    Seriously.

It was 84 degrees here on Monday and we just came inside after an hour of playing in the snow. And not just any snow, but three inches of snow. It hasn’t done that in San Antonio since 1985 which means the last time it snowed I was listening to Madonna and probably worried about how the snow would affect my permed hair.

Needless to say, we lost our minds. Caroline had gone to dinner with Mimi and Bops for my nephew Luke’s birthday and they texted a picture from dinner of them standing out in the snow. It wasn’t snowing at our house yet, so I figured it was a few flurries and that would be the end of it.

As soon as Caroline got home, she put on a heavier coat and announced she was going out to the front yard to wait for the snow. And, sure enough, she was right. Shenanigans ensued.

Anyway, I just had to document this momentous occasion so that when we are wearing shorts and flip-flops on Christmas morning, we will look back on this moment and know it was our white Christmas. Also, the next time this happens, I may be 78 years old.

Speaking of Christmas, I have big plans to do a gift guide for guys next week because several of you have asked so stay tuned for that. But in the meantime, I believe my love of Hummingbird Farms Lavender products is well documented and they have an incredible special going on right now that may help you cross some gifts off your list. Honestly, there is so much good stuff in each of these gift boxes that you could even divide it up and create a few different gifts for teachers or neighbors or for hostess gifts. You can find all the details of what’s in each Big Boo box here at Hummingbird Farms.

Now for other cute stuff I’ve seen this week:

    1. turtleneck poncho pullover

This also comes in taupe and I love that it’s a versatile poncho. I can totally see this with a cute long sleeve striped t-shirt under it. It’s on sale for $49.95 plus an extra 30% off all sale at Anthropologie.

    2. free people beach cocoon cowl neck pullover

This is so soft and the perfect thing to wear with jeans or leggings with tennis shoes or boots. It’s on sale for $47.60 and also comes in charcoal.

    3. manchester tall boots

I own these. I bought them three years ago and they are my go-to pair of boots. They are so comfortable and totally versatile. They are a little pricey, but if you’re looking for a nice pair of boots to put on your Christmas list, then I highly recommend these. They also come in black.

    4. j.crew denim jacket

A denim jacket is just a great basic to have. This one is on sale for $43.

    5. buffalo check hooded coat

I keep looking at this coat and really want it to go on sale. However, now that I live somewhere where IT SNOWS, maybe I just need to get it to ward off the frigid San Antonio winter.

    6. j.crew cotton knit sleep set

My first pajama love is the Gap sleep leggings, but J.Crew makes super soft pjs. These are on sale for $37 and really cute.

    7. hinge ribbed cardigan

I love this cardigan because it could be dressed up for the office or just thrown on with jeans and a t-shirt. It’s 40% off and $53.40. It also comes in a dark gray.

    8. cable knit turtleneck sweater

This is a great basic gray sweater and it’s now 40% off and $29.40.

    9. layered chain necklace

This is 50% off and just $11.98. It’s a great statement necklace to wear with everything from a little black dress to just dressing up a t-shirt or sweater.

    10. superga sneakers

These are on sale for $48.75 and I love this gray color.

    11. sorel 1964 premium CVS boots

P bought me these last Christmas and questioned how much I’d wear them since we live in San Antonio. But did I mention it snowed tonight? And they kept my feet warm and dry. Until Caroline stole them from me. They’re also just comfortable and warm when it’s cold and rainy. I happen to think they’re really cute.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Playing catch up

    Y’all.

I am the worst blogger ever.

But in my defense, I have been very busy keeping up with current events. Specifically, reading everything I can about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry while also keeping up with the Texas A&M coaching situation. It has been a big news cycle surrounding all the things I care about. The only thing missing was a lead story about rose hip oil and a new trend in eyebrow maintenance.

Anyway, the Aggies found their coach and I have to say is WELL PLAYED. I think this video done by TexAgs pretty much sums it up. Am I totally drinking the maroon Kool-Aid? Why, yes. Yes I am.

In other news, I recorded the most fun podcast with Jen Hatmaker. You can listen to it here if you are interested in that kind of thing.

And in yet more news, I have discovered a new hair product that I love. I usually shower at night and let my hair air-dry. This Bumble and Bumble Don’t Blow it Fine (H)Air Styler is amazing. Caroline and I have both been using it and there are some mornings that I don’t even have to touch my hair up with a curling iron. It gives it body without any frizz. I don’t know that it will work for all hair types but if you let your hair air dry on a regular basis, then I highly recommend it.

I realize this isn’t a very comprehensive post, but it’s what I had for today and I just wanted to check in and say hi and I miss you and I’m trying to finish up one more writing project before Christmas and deadlines are killing me and I don’t know why I keep agreeing to write more stuff. Love you all dearly for hanging in with me. We’ll talk more soon.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition I still have pumpkins on my porch

It’s true. I still have pumpkins on my front porch. And some dead mums.

But you know what? It’s just December 1. There are plenty of good Christmas decorating times still to be had. I just need to get motivated to actually, you know, go out and buy a tree and put lights on it and get out all my various ribbons and wreaths. I’m like the Christmas version of Scarlett O’Hara and will think about that tomorrow.

Here are some cute things I found this week:

    1. embroidered camo jacket

I have a perfectly good camo jacket that I wear all the time, but this one makes me want another one because mine doesn’t have cute embroidery on it. Plus this is on sale for $69.95 and an additional 40% off at checkout.

    2. velvet fern kimono

I bought this earlier this year and then returned it because I felt like it would go on sale. And I was right. It is so gorgeous in person and could easily be dressed up for holiday parties or just worn with jeans and a t-shirt. It’s on sale for $59.95 plus an additional 40% off.

    3. gingham and pearls layered necklace

I’m not normally a pearls kind of girl, but this gingham detail is everything. These would make even a basic sweater and jeans look fab. They are on sale for $39.95 and an additional 40% off.

    4. milk and honey french terry joggers

I love these joggers from Milk and Honey Tees. They are perfect for everything from running to the grocery store to sitting on your couch reading all the latest news on Harry and Meghan’s wedding plans. They also come in gray and a camo pattern.

    5. nike dry training hoodie

I love a good hoodie in the winter time and this one has great reviews. It’s on sale for 25% and now just $56.25. It also comes in black.

    6. zella live in space dye leggings

I believe my love of Zella leggings is well-documented. I love this space dye gray version that are on sale for $39.53. (That’s a weird price, but whatever Nordstrom.)

    7. marian platform sneaker

I love a slip on sneaker and these are so cute because they’re a little dressier than just your average sneaker. They also come in pink or gold and are $59.95.

    8. barefoot dreams essential cardigan

This is a little different from the hooded version because, well, it doesn’t have a hood. But the length is the same and it is so dreamy. Even better? It’s now 20% and on sale for $97.60. I basically wear mine any time I’m in my house, which essentially means this is on my body twenty-three hours a day most days.

    9. scout maxi dress in burgundy

I have this dress in black and it so soft and so gorgeous. It’s like wearing an elegant nightgown and looks like you have put so much more effort into being dressed up than you actually have.

    10. old navy shawl collar open front cardi

This is a great lightweight cardi to wear around over everything from a t-shirt and jeans to workout clothes. It comes in a few different color options, but I like this navy stripe.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.
