  • This, that and the other

This is going to be quick because I’m watching the World Series and then I’m going to need to watch tonight’s This Is Us and Caroline has been sick and it’s been a long day.

But here are a few things I thought you needed to know about:

    1. Cultivate event with Kelly Minter at Currey Creek Church in Boerne, Texas

Kelly Minter is one of my favorite Bible teachers and one of my favorite people. She is just real and genuine and knows how to teach the Bible in such a relatable, practical way. And for those of you in the San Antonio area, she will be in Boerne on November 10-11 and you should totally go see her if you can. Here’s a quick blurb about the event from Kelly:

“Melanie was so kind to allow me a second to tell you about our CULTIVATE event coming to Boerne, TX near her hometown of San Antonio (and for those who follow Melanie from afar, perhaps we are in your neighborhood soon as well).

CULTIVATE combines everything I’ve ever wanted in an event: The joy of teaching God’s Word in an intimate setting, worship where I can hear you singing along with our acoustic Nashville band, special times of prayer and one of my favorites — a focus on local and international missions.

The team and I are thrilled to be coming to Currey Creek Church in Boerne, TX on Friday-Saturday, November 10-11. I would so love to meet you there. Please jump over to our website for more information and invite your friends. Hope to see you all in Boerne, TX. You can register here.”

    2. The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Come and Get It!

Ree’s newest cookbook just released yesterday and it is so good. It’s full of easy ways to get dinner on the table and I am all about that. Plus, it will make the best Christmas gift.

    3. Blue Willow Bookshop Signing on Saturday, October 28th at 11 a.m.

I’ll be in Houston this Saturday, October 28th at Blue Willow Bookshop. I’d so love to see you there if you can make it. It’s the best little independent bookstore and I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to be there. They are also nice enough to send you a personalized copy of Church of the Small Things if you call ahead of time and order from them. Just click on the link above for more details.

    4. oribe supershine moisturizing creme

My sweet hairstylist always sends me home with samples and I used a sample of this last week and immediately bought it because I love it so much. It’s a little pricey, but this smaller size will last you a long time because a little bit goes a long way. My hair has felt so dry lately and this makes it feel healthier and look so shiny. It’s my favorite new hair product.

    5. nike air zoom pegasus running shoes

These are my favorite running shoes that I usually don’t wear for running unless you count running errands. They are so comfortable and supportive and come in a bunch of cute color options. And they are currently 25% off in some of the colors right now including this white that I adore.

    That’s it for today.

    Happy Wednesday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition it finally feels (a little) like fall

The weather finally cooled off here just a little bit. I was able to wear boots and everything. Of course it’s going to be 90 degrees on Saturday but I’m choosing to not focus on that right now.

Maybe one day we’ll even get to wear sweaters.

Also, in non-fashion news, I was a guest on my friend Lincee Ray’s podcast this week and had the best time. She makes me laugh and loves all things pop culture as much as I do so it was basically just like having a normal conversation. You can find it here if you’re interested in listening.

Now here are some cute things I found this week:

    1. free people summer dreams hooded pullover

I love the color of this and I am always on board for any sort of hooded pullover. This is perfect for Saturday morning soccer games and running to the grocery store and just wearing around. It’s 40% off and now $76.80.

    2. life changer moto jacket

I keep looking at leather jackets and feel like it may be time to add a good black one to my closet. This one is a great price at $98 and also comes in other colors.

    3. jillian top

I love a good red and black plaid. I think this would look great with black leggings and boots.

    4. old navy extra long sweater

This long sweater is perfect to throw on over a t-shirt or a tank with jeans. It also comes in black and light gray.

    5. gap velvet skinny jeans

Velvet is such a big trend for fall and winter and I love these velvet jeans from Gap. This light pink is my favorite but they also come in gray, ivory and black.

    6. nordic nights button-down

I saw this in an email from Free People the other day and it called to me. Look how cute that lacing is up the side. It also comes in a rose color. I think both are so cute.

    7. autumnal tunic

I will never not one time not love a tunic and this one speaks to me.

    8. ruffled cuff button-down

This is on sale for $49.95 plus an extra 25% off sale and it has great reviews. It would be great with jeans but could also be dressed up with a skirt or pants for the office.

    9. j.crew merino v-neck sweater with drawstring sleeves

A v-neck is pretty much universally flattering and I love these sleeves. This comes in several colors and is 30% off with code DAY03.

    10. sam edelman camellia tall boot

I cannot quit looking at these boots. I love the suede, I love the heel, I love the whole thing. They also come in slate and black, but I really love this camel color.

    That’s all for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • Coming home and homecoming

I would like to report that I am totally well rested and back to my normal self, but that would be a lie. However, I am much closer to that than I was last week at this time so that feels like a victory. And I figured I better recount the last several days while I still vaguely remember what happened and where I was and what I did.

Last Tuesday, Gulley and I drove to Dallas for a book signing at Barnes & Noble. We made our usual stops along the way for fried chicken, a DQ Blizzard, and the cleanest bathrooms we could find. Eventually we ended up at Jamie and Trevor’s house where we hung out and caught up on life before we went to the book signing. It was so fun to meet a lot of people who were on the launch team for the book and to see some old friends and I tried to concentrate on that instead of the fact that I had to catch a 7:00 a.m. flight the next morning.

After a refreshing four hours of sleep, Gulley drove me to the airport to catch my flight to L.A. I’ve never wished more that I was one of those people who can sleep on a plane but I have never one time been that person and so I watched a movie instead since I was fortunate enough to be on a plane with the built-in screen on the seat in front of you.

When I landed at the airport I rented a car and drove myself through Los Angeles traffic to get to the Universal Studios lot where Hallmark Home and Family is filmed. The fact that I managed to do this successfully made me feel levels of accomplishment that are really beyond what is normal. I had the option to have a car and driver but my fear of getting carsick sitting in a backseat during stop and go traffic was greater than my fear of navigating traffic and unknown streets.

Once I was on the Universal lot, I was directed to turn on Steven Spielberg Drive, go past the old West town on my left and then arrive at my trailer. When I got home on Thursday, I was telling P all of this and he said, “Let me see your pictures of it.” And I had to admit I was so overwhelmed by the whole thing that I didn’t take even one picture. He proclaimed that I am the worst blogger ever and I can’t disagree with him because if a blogger goes to Universal Studios and drives through an Old West town and has her own trailer and a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, then did it even happen? Doubtful.

But I managed to get through my portion of the show without shaming my family and that felt like a victory. And I ate fish and chips next to Roma Downey and so, basically, I was touched by an angel. Then I drove my rental car back to my hotel by the airport and ordered all the food from the room service menu. I’m only halfway kidding.

I realize the fact I took a picture of this but not one single part of the rest of my day confirms that I am the worst.

The next morning I made it to LAX and through security and even had time to grab a large coffee before making it to my gate. Or so I thought. As it turned out, LAX is a complicated labyrinth of nonsense and everyone headed to Texas was loaded on a shuttle bus that drove us practically to Arizona before loading us on a plane that seemed way too tiny for a three hour flight. It was a plane that was so tiny that they just passed out drinks because a drink cart wouldn’t fit down the aisle and so, of course, we ended up sitting on the runway for an hour and a half because the cargo door had a broken hinge that had to be fixed.

I finally made it back to San Antonio by mid-afternoon and was back to my real life of driving Caroline to soccer practice by that evening. P took her to school on Friday morning and I slept in. It was the best sleep I can remember in recent memory. Once I woke up, I started the laundry, cleaned up the house and ran to the grocery store because it was Homecoming weekend and Caroline was having a group of her friends over for dinner before the dance on Saturday night.

The girls all came to the house Saturday evening and ate dinner and then got dressed. There was a flurry of helping with hair and doing makeup and zipping up dresses and lots of smiles and laughter.

When I dropped them off at the dance I got a little teary-eyed and maybe it’s because I was so tired and emotional, but I think mostly it was because it was one of those moments when you are fully aware that you are living smack dab in the middle of the good ‘ol days and that this was a moment to cherish.

I picked Caroline up from the dance later that night and then we pretty much went straight to bed because, as much as that seems like plenty of excitement for one weekend, we had more on the horizon in the form of a soccer game in Houston at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning. This means we had to be out of bed at 5:00 a.m. which means I didn’t feel like I was living my best life on Sunday morning.

But we made it to Houston and the game was terrible. The refs were terrible, the team didn’t play up to their normal level and Caroline even got her first ever yellow card. I couldn’t find the spot in her baby book for “Baby’s first yellow card” but it felt noteworthy since she’s been playing since she was in first grade. It was a milestone. It was also a bad call in my opinion, but refs tend to not ask for parental advice while officiating games.

And it didn’t even happen on this shot where she caused a defender to fall over.

Oh, and I also forgot to mention that I watched the Aggies beat Florida on Saturday night and it was very exciting and I am impressed with this team who keeps managing to win in a supremely ugly fashion, but they win nonetheless. I’ll take that all day long.

    The end.

(I wrote “The End” because this is long enough to be a book. Thank you for bearing with me.)

Also, there’s an excerpt from Church of the Small Things up on Success.com today. You can find it here.

  • I’ll take “Things I never thought would happen for $500, Alex”

So I never really thought I would write a Bible study. Not because I don’t read the Bible and love Jesus and all of that, but more that it just seemed really difficult to write questions and find practical applications and to feel remotely qualified to teach about anything. I am a girl who never won a Bible drill in Sunday School and still can’t find Habakkuk or Zephaniah in my Bible on the first or fifth try. But you know what they say? We make plans and God laughs. And so this happened:

The Church of the Small Things book has been out for two weeks, but the Bible study version is officially out today. Several of you have asked, so I’ll clarify that while they hit on the same theme of what God can do with the small things, they are also totally separate from each other and so you can read the book and then do the study or do the study and then read the book or you can read both at the same time or you can never read either of them and quit reading this blog post. It’s totally up to you and what you prefer and how you can live your best life.

And in what may the most surprising part of all of this, Faith Gateway decided that the Church of the Small Things Bible study will be their lead online Bible study for the fall.

The online study begins on October 22 and runs through December 7, 2017. You will have access to all six videos during that time as well as a private Facebook page and weekly blogs.

You can do the study on your own, with the Faith Gateway online community, or with a church or small group. Each week’s video is 15-20 minutes just to give you an idea of the time commitment and you can watch them at any point during the week. You can purchase the accompanying study guide here on Faith Gateway or at other online retailers or Christian book stores.

If you register before October 23, you can get access to some free bonuses. To get more information or to sign up, you can click here to get to the registration site.

If you’ve ever wanted to do a Bible study but felt intimidated or didn’t have a group or didn’t want to get out of your pajamas, then this is the perfect opportunity. No one will check to see if you actually did your homework or if you have good answers or if you really listened to the video. In other words, it’s perfect and you get to experience a little bit of Round Top, Texas, the Junk Gypsies and Royer’s Pie Haven.

I hope you’ll join us for this six week study. I can honestly say that as I’ve spent the last two weeks traveling and reading responses about the book and just seeing all that is going on in the world right now, I believe in all that God is doing in the church of the small things more than ever.

    Have a great Tuesday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition with a dream and my cardigan

So I’m a little tired. Which feels like the understatement of the year. I got home from L.A. on Thursday afternoon and was driving soccer carpool by Thursday night and now I’m sitting here semi-conscious on my couch. I was in L.A. to be on the Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family morning show.

It was really fun and I even rented a car and drove on the L.A. freeway like an actual adult. And it took me an hour to drive ten miles so now I get what everyone means when they talk about the traffic there. Anyway, I’ll write more about it next week but we better get to the fashion or I’m going to fall asleep.

Here are some cute things I found:

    1. kira long kimono jacket

This is on sale for $69.95 at Anthropologie. I love the colors and it would look so great over just a simple pair of black jeans and a black t-shirt or tank.

    2. matilda button-down

This comes in several color options and Anthropologie is currently offering 20% off all tops. I happen to think this red with white polka dots is precious and I love the buttons and the tunic-length. Plus it has great reviews.

    3. glistened knit wide leg pants

I can attest that these pants are so much cuter in person than they are on the model. They are really soft and comfortable, but would be perfect for a holiday party with a simple black velvet top. They come in gold or silver.

    4. free people meadow lark blouse

Am I powerless to resist a good Free People tunic top? YES. This one is flowy, but has the best collar and looks great with black leggings.

    5. bp v-neck long sleeve sweater

This is just $39 and comes in gray also. I just like a good basic black sweater for the fall and winter and a v-neck is always flattering and feminine.

    6. morning suede moto jacket

This is pricey, but how gorgeous is this jacket? The color is perfect and it would make even jeans and a white t-shirt look amazing. It might be a good Christmas wish item.

    7. 7 for all mankind skinny jeans

I was at a book signing in Dallas this week and someone asked where I got my jeans and I remembered that I haven’t shared this secret in a while. Last Call is a great place to find expensive designer jeans at lower prices. For example, these are $89.60 but are normally $189.

    8. runaround french terry tunic

I know I have proclaimed my love for these runaround tunics, but they continue to be a favorite They are $33.50 but my readers can get an extra 20% off with the code RUNAROUND20 until Monday. Plus, all sweaters at Ikat Elephant are also 20% off right now.

    9. altar’d state berry dress

I wore this with skinny jeans (It is in no universe a dress on me) to my San Antonio book signing and several people asked where I got it. Here it is. I’m wearing a small and it also comes in a cream color.

    10. cashion cable knit sweater

This is the perfect soft cable knit sweater for winter. I plan to wear it on a regular basis. The length is great and the arms are extra long which I like because I can pull the sleeves down over my hands or cuff them.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a great Friday.

  • In case I forget to tell you later, I’m having a good time

    Hi.

    How are you?

I am in the midst of what may go down as the busiest two week period of my life to date. But don’t worry, I totally got to relax on Monday because we spent it shopping for shoes for Caroline for Homecoming this weekend. Have you ever prayed in the shoe department at Nordstrom? Because I did yesterday as we looked for something that was “comfortable” but “not too flat” and “not too strappy” and “doesn’t have a weird heel” and “isn’t a bootie but isn’t a dress shoe either”. Jesus, be near.

The good news is even though I’m a little tired, I’m having the best time hearing from so many of you who have already read Church of the Small Things. It means so much to me that it’s made you laugh and made you cry and encouraged you in any way. Sometimes by the time a book comes out, I can start to wonder why on earth I ever even put myself through all of it so I’m grateful for all the love and support.

I started my little Texas book tour last week at Barnes & Noble in San Antonio. It was a good time and P even showed up and signed a couple of copies of Antelope in the Living Room since it’s about him. (The copies he signed are at the San Pedro B&N across from North Star Mall if you want one.)

After the signing I went to grab a glass of wine with Mimi, Bops, my sister, Gulley, and my friend Debbi (who, by the way, is the genius behind all the funny Church of the Small Things promos on my Instagram). It was a good way to end a fun night.

Then I headed out early Friday morning to Round Top for a book signing at Royer’s Pie Haven. Some of my publishing friends joined me and it was so fun to show them Round Top and to watch them experience the wonder that is Royer’s and the Junky Gypsy store.

Later that afternoon, I made the drive to College Station and got to Honey and Big’s house just in time for some homemade soup and cornbread which was like heaven in a bowl. My dear friend, Tiff, came by and we got to visit and then Gulley finally got into town about 10:00 p.m. and we all stayed up way too late laughing and talking.

We slept in the next morning and then it was time to get ready for my book signing at the MSC on the Texas A&M campus. I’m not going to lie, it was maybe my favorite book-related thing I’ve ever done. It felt surreal to sit there in the MSC, where I spent so much time during my college years eating lunch with friends in lieu of going to class, and think about how my nineteen-year-old self couldn’t have ever imagined this scenario in a million years.

Maybe that’s why I look slightly overenthusiastic in that picture. I apologize to whoever I was talking to because I also feel certain my voice was two octaves higher than normal.

I met so many Aggies and saw old friends and even made some new Alabama friends, one of whom was wearing a large button with Nick Saban’s face on it. And I loved meeting so many darling current students who never failed to greet me with the line, “My mom is a big fan and told me I needed to stop by…” So well done, mamas, your kids took time out of their game day festivities to come meet someone old enough to be their mother and buy a book. I wanted to take them all home and feed them soup and cornbread.

When the signing was over, Gulley, Carolyn (my book editor) and I walked over to a tailgate to meet up with my friend Lincee and some of her friends. Carolyn had never had a real Texas football and tailgate experience and I felt like it was my duty to make sure we remedied that. And so after a chicken fajita and cold beer, we made our way to Kyle Field for the main event of the evening. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect but had polled all the Aggies who showed up at the book signing and the general consensus seemed to be that we all felt optimistic. Or in the words of Patty Simcox from Grease, “I hope we don’t make too poor a showing”.

And as it turns out, the Aggies held our own. I’m not one to talk about a moral victory, but I saw a lot of grit and heart from our team and that gives me hope for the future. I would watch this team purely to watch Cullen Gillaspia, our 12th man, every single game. In other words, my heart can’t help itself. I love Aggie football. I love Kyle Field. I love all the gut-wrenching agony and glory of it all. I’m a sucker.

I woke up Sunday morning early enough to drive home to watch my other favorite sporting event, Caroline’s soccer game.

It was impressive because not only did she score a goal, she used her time on the field to promote my book.

And so that’s what has been happening around here along with shopping for shoes for Homecoming and trying to get laundry done before I leave town again on Tuesday morning which is today if you’re doing the math but I’m writing this on Monday night and so whatever.

After all that recapping, here’s a quick list of things you may want to know about:

    1. Dallas Book Signing tonight at 7:00 at Lincoln Park Barnes & Noble

    2. Church of the Small Things Online Bible Study with Faith Gateway

This is the perfect way to do the Bible study, especially because it’s online and no one will judge you if you don’t finish your homework. Not that I’ve ever not finished Bible study homework, I just hear that happens sometimes.

    3. Signed, special edition copies of Church of Small Things with bonus content

These are just $16 right now and I hadn’t seen one in person until last week. There’s a whole bonus content section in the back that I wrote exclusively for Barnes & Noble readers that you can only get from Barnes & Noble, plus it’s a signed edition so perfect for gift-giving. You can find them here or in your local B&N store.

And that’s all for today because it’s late and Mabel and I are worn out from all this book excitement.

    Mabel even wrote a haiku:

    Selling books is hard
    Mom’s suitcase is packed again
    I might pee on it

Have a great day and thanks again for all the support!
