  • Fashion Friday: Edition Please come to Boston

So I’m flying to Boston later today to speak at Gordon College on Saturday. And then I fly back home late Saturday night. This is the start of a crazy couple of weeks so I’m just planning to take deep breaths, find a glass of wine when I can and take more deep breaths.

Below is a list of the other places I’ll be over the next few weeks just in case you happen to be in the area and want to stop by and get a signed book and talk about Friday Night Lights or mascara or whatever.

10/5/17 – SAN ANTONIO – Book signing at Barnes & Noble San Pedro – 321 NW Loop 410 San Antonio, TX 7:00pm (A portion of all proceeds from any purchase at Barnes & Noble that night will go to SA Reads which promotes literacy efforts.)

10/6/17 – ROUND TOP – Book signing at Royer’s Pie Haven in Round Top, Texas during Antique Week 11:00 am-1:00 pm

10/7/17 – COLLEGE STATION – Book signing at Texas A&M at the Memorial Student Center Barnes & Noble bookstore 2:00-4:00pm

10/10/17 – DALLAS – Book signing at Barnes & Noble 7700 West Northwest Hwy Dallas, TX 7:00pm

10/28/17 – HOUSTON – Book signing at Blue Willow Bookstore in Houston, TX 11:00 am

Now, here are some cute things I found this week and I’ll be the first to say it took some effort.

    1. free people laguna thermal top

This is the top I bought this week. I’d been on the fence because did I really need it? YES. YES I DID. Now I want it in every color. It’s so soft.

    2. v-neck blouse

I bought this exact top last year and wore it constantly under cardigans and jackets and kimonos. It’s the perfect length and looks great by itself, too. It’s only $17.99 and also comes in white and green.

    3. plaid tie back peplum top

This is so cute and perfect with jeans or dressed up for the office. It’s $54.50 but 40% off with no code needed at checkout.

    4. sole society faux leather saddlebag

I’ve been carrying my cross body bag a lot lately and I have to say it’s nice to have my hands free while I’m running errands. This one is really cute and it also comes in gray and black.

    5. layered bar charm necklace

This is only $19 and great for those of us who don’t want to have to actually work to layer our necklaces.

    6. daniella poncho

I love this striped poncho. It’s like a foolproof outfit with leggings and boots and you don’t have to worry about sucking in your stomach. It’s $32.

    7. jenna kimono

I love a good kimono. Especially one at a reasonable price point. This one also comes in a light gray and is $38.

    8. sueded knit moto jacket

I haven’t seen this in person, but it looks promising and is a great addition to any outfit. It’s $59.99 at Old Navy.

    9. long linen blend cardigan

Speaking of a great addition to any outfit, this is a great piece to throw on over a dress or with a t-shirt and jeans. Plus it’s the perfect weight for a Texas fall.

    10. pilcro corduroy high-rise skinny jeans

I tried these on in Anthropologie and they are so dang comfortable. They’re like leggings, feel and look like velvet, and they have a high waist so they suck everything in yet don’t feel restrictive or uncomfortable.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.

  • An excerpt from Gulley about Autocorrect

It is now officially just one week out from the release of Church of the Small Things, which means I am doing a lot of deep breathing and hiding out in my house. I’ve had October 3, 2017 circled on my calendar and by that I mean that I’ve had it marked on my iPhone calendar for almost two years so it’s a little surreal that it’s almost actually here. I guess part of me thought maybe Jesus might come back before I had to live through another book release.

The truth is I’m excited about the book and about the message that small things matter. And so I thought it is fitting to have today’s excerpt read by none other than Gulley. The thing about Gulley that I don’t think you know unless you know her in real life is that she teaches preschool.

Every day Gulley teaches three-year-olds how to stand in line and wash their hands and share their toys and not throw sand and to make it to the bathroom in time. This is my version of hell. But she does it with so much love and dedication and every time one of her little tiny students sees her around town it is like they have seen a rock star. They can barely contain their excitement. Seeing the way she loves her students and the way they love her is proof that the biggest difference we make while we walk this earth can usually be found in the smallest acts of faithfulness.

Her other ministry is that she makes me laugh every single day.

If you haven’t ordered it already, you might as well go ahead and order now because you only have to wait a week to get your book. Plus, you can still get all the free stuff for pre-ordering here. (If you have pre-ordered and never got your link with all the stuff, please email me with your order number and let me know!)

There are still signed copies available for pre-order at Barnes & Noble with exclusive bonus content and a bullet journal in the back. You can order one here.

And you can find it on Amazon here.

And you can find the book trailer and all other buying options here.

  • An excerpt by Bops about Bops and Caroline

Today we have an excerpt read by my dad, also known as Bops. He decided before Caroline was born that his grandpa name would be Pops, but Caroline pronounced it as Bops when she was a little over a year old and so Bops it is. He is the best.

Also, this is a picture from about four years ago that is exhibit A of how much they favor each other.

There are still a few signed, first edition copies available for pre-order at Barnes & Noble (Did I mention I signed my name until my left hand fell off and I nearly died?) and they are currently 30% off which makes them just $16.07, plus they have exclusive bonus content and a bullet journal in the back. You can order one here. Once they are gone, they are gone forever so if you want a signed copy for yourself or to give as gifts, this is your chance.

And you can find the book trailer and all other buying options here.

If you pre-order, don’t forget to go enter your order number here to get all your pre-order bonuses, which include downloadable prints by Heather Gauthier, the amazing cover artist, five of my family recipes, the first three chapters of the book and the first video session of the Church of the Small things Bible study. (If you have pre-ordered and never got your link with all the stuff, please email me with your order number and let me know!)

    Have a great Wednesday!

  • Here are some things

Have I told y’all that I’ve declared Monday to be my new Saturday? Because I totally have. I’m not sure why it took me so long to figure this out, but since our weekends are so busy it just makes sense to let myself be less than productive on Mondays. Granted, this doesn’t necessarily work every week, but when it does it’s delightful. And it felt entirely justified yesterday because we spent our entire Sunday driving to Houston and back for Caroline’s soccer game.

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that. I’m glad we’ve had this talk. Here are few other things I thought you might want to know about:

    1. Amazon Silver

I shared this on my Facebook page last week, but it makes me laugh every time I watch it.

    2. Frequently bought together

I was shopping on Amazon the other day and this caught my eye.

It made me laugh out loud. Apparently my love for Teddie’s Organic Rose hip oil has convinced many of you to make that purchase, along with my new book.

    3. Oven Fried Chicken

I made this for dinner last night (This is the only part of my Monday as Saturday plan that doesn’t work because I still feel like I need to cook dinner on Monday nights) and it was delicious. The chicken was actually crispy which hasn’t always been my experience with oven fried chicken. I also used a paper grocery sack for my flour mixture and then just folded it over and shook the bag until the chicken was coated like Minnie taught Celia Foote to do in The Help. “Minnie don’t burn chicken.”

Speaking of dinner, it’s the bane of my existence right now trying to find stuff to cook that tastes good and doesn’t take a sweet forever in the kitchen because our weeknights are so busy. That’s why I’m so happy about my friend Shay’s new cookbook, Simmers.

It’s full of slow cooker recipes that are simple and perfect for this time of year when we’re all running a little low on our kitchen want-to. You can pre-order it here and it comes out October 3.

    4. Books

I have been in a total reading slump because I feel like I’ve been too busy writing to read and so I kept opting to just watch something on Netflix. But then last week I looked at my growing pile of books to read, grabbed one and started reading. Now I’m in full-blown reading mode again.

I finished The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo this past weekend. You can find it here. It was a pretty easy read and I enjoyed it overall, although I told Gulley I think it was supposed to make me feel more sad than it did but I’m just not in that place. However, it opens with 9/11 and that shapes the characters in the book which I found to be an interesting storyline.

And then I started When We Were Worthy by Marybeth Whalen on Sunday night and am already over halfway through because I’ve picked it up every chance I’ve gotten. It’s based in a small football town in Georgia and is filled with tragedy and twists and turns and basically is everything I enjoy in a book that isn’t about World War II. You can find it here.

    5. Why the Small Things Matter

I wrote this original piece for Success.com about the ways I’ve learned to appreciate the small things in life in case you want to read it.

That’s all for today. Have a great Tuesday.

  • An excerpt about bangs

Last spring we filmed various people reading excerpts from Church of the Small Things for me to share leading up to its official release on October 3. There was a time that I regularly posted videos of Caroline, but those days are long gone now that she’s a teenager and not really interested in being on any kind of social media unless it’s her own. However, she agreed to read an excerpt from the book and I am probably biased but I think she’s the cutest.

I’m ignoring the fact that she already looks significantly older than this even though this was filmed just four months ago.

Bangs. I know they work for some people but we are not those people. Remember when Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress Oscar for playing June Carter Cash in Ring of Fire? There are some people who would feel that is her greatest accomplishment, yet I believe these bangs are significantly harder to achieve.

I carried this photo around for years in the mistaken belief I could achieve this. Never mind that I look nothing like Reese Witherspoon in any way, shape or form. Oh, and I also don’t have a team of stylists to fix my bangs every day.

Anyway, you can read another excerpt from the book here about my grandparents that was featured on Country Living this week.

There are still some signed, first edition copies available for pre-order at Barnes & Noble and they are currently 30% off which makes them just $16.07.

Thank you for pre-ordering and for accepting me even though I suffer from bangs insufficiency. I’ll see you back here tomorrow for Fashion Friday.

  • Fashion Friday: Edition the end of a short week

I don’t know when it will feel normal to talk about normal things because we haven’t even quit reeling from Hurricane Harvey and now Hurricane Irma is about to hit Florida. And so Fashion Friday feels a little silly, but I also think I’ve always used this space to give us all a little bit of a break from all the harsh realities of life so I’m going ahead with Fashion Friday today. But don’t forget that you can find my post here of all the ways to help people recovering from Hurricane Harvey and stay tuned for ways to help after Hurricane Irma. Let’s continue to pray for the people of Texas and for those in the path of Irma.

Here are some cute things I found this week:

    1. hailey crepe dress

Most of the reviews say this runs a little big so keep that in mind. It is also 36 inches long, so it will be a little longer than it looks on the model. I love the simple cut and it comes in tons of colors. It’s $46.

    2. knit tunic

I never really like myself in pink, yet I am drawn to pink sweaters. This also comes in beige and black.

    3. blouson top

Now this top I am all for. Love the sleeves, the length and the cut. It also comes in white.

    4. zella let’s explore hoodie

We are three weeks into the school year and I’ve remembered again that I spend 98% of my days wearing nothing but workout clothes. And, thus, it makes sense for me to invest in cute workout clothes as opposed to nicer things and pink sweaters I’m never going to wear.

    5. ribbed cardigan

I really like this cardigan. The cut, the color, the length. I’m here for all of it.

    6. veena beaded caftan

How gorgeous is this? Anthropologie has an extra 25% off sale items right now and this is on sale for $99.95. I love this.

    7. a new day bell sleeve dress

Target has a new brand called A New Day and this is one of the dresses from that collection. I tried it on in the store the other day and was prepared for it to fit weird, but it’s actually much cuter on than it is in the picture. I think it would be so great for holiday parties and that kind of thing and you can’t beat the price.

    8. a new day utility top

This is also A New Day. I have a top similar to this that I bought at Target years ago and I still wear it all the time. It’s perfect to wear with jeans. It’s $17.99 and comes in several colors.

    9. kírie beaded earrings

I love these beaded earrings from Ikat Elephant. They’d make good Christmas gifts and are $18.50.

    10. preston tunic

I love a good stripe and I love a good tunic so it makes sense that I would like this striped tunic. Plus the back is really cute.

    That’s it for today.

    Have a good Friday.
